Find Literary Criticism
on Works, Authors,
Settings, Characters,
Themes, and Literary
Techniques.
Available through the Brish Library at Hagerstown Community College
Works or Titles Search
A Works Search will help you find information on individual
works of literature.
Select the Works Search.
Type the Title of the work of literature in the search box
and click on Search.
Tip
It is not necessary to use
these boxes or “limiters”
for most searches.
You may be asked to select the work from a list.
Use the author’s name
to help choose the right
work from the list and
click to find articles.
Results List
This is the
Results List page.
The Tabs sort
the results into
into broad groups.
Tip
Do not use
“Reviews & News”

Look for useful
articles under the
Literature Criticism
and
Topic and Work
Overviews tabs.
Tip
Use the
Biographies
tab when doing a
Person Search.

Use the Subject list
on the left to narrow
your search.
For example:
Click on Ulysses (Novel) to find
the 63 articles within this list
of 193 that focus on Ulysses
or
Bloom, Leopold (Ulysses)
to find 7 articles about a
main character from the work

Click on the article title
to get the full text.

Print Preview to
create a graphics-free
version of the article.
The citation is at the
bottom of the article.

to get the
electronic photocopy
of the article.
Click here to print.

The PDF version
of text will not
come with an
MLA style
citation.
To create an MLA style citation for
the article, click on Citation Tools.

In this new
window, select
MLA 7th Edition
and click on Save.
Click on Open and another new window
opens, displaying the MLA style citation.
Copy and paste
the citation to a
Word Document.

Close both windows and return to the article.

Return to the Search Results to select another article or
move forward or back one article at a time by clicking here.
Author Search
An Author Search will help you find information on
works, themes, and techniques used by a particular author,
as well as biographies.
Select the Person Search.
Author Search
Type in the Author’s name and click on Search.
Select the author’s
name from the list
to see the articles.
Results List
Click on an
article to view the
full text and select
Print Preview
from the Tools
menu to print.
Results List
Click on the
Biographies Tab
to find biographies
with valuable
literary criticism.
This biography
will discuss
Joyce as a
modern novelist.
Advanced Search
The Advanced Search will help you locate information
on specific themes or literary techniques within a work
or used by an author.
Select Advanced Search.

Use a combination
of these search
boxes to find
useful articles.
This search will look for articles
discussing the concept of
“time” within the novel Ulysses.
This search will look for articles
discussing the concept of
“time” within all the
works by James Joyce.
Advanced Search
Try other searches to find information on literary
techniques or comparisons of Ulysses with other works.
This search will find
articles on Symbolism
within Ulysses.
This search will find
articles on Symbolism
and James Joyce.
This search will find

and Finnegan’s Wake.
