Kisumu
Bigga Boda Bicycle Trial Market in Kisumu, Kenya.
Goal: To improve human powered transportation options in Kenya
A common site in Kenya: hauling charcoal to market.
(Charcoal is a low-cost fuel but bad for the environment of Kenya.)
Boda-boda: Young men who carry people and things on bicycles for cash.

The bicycles sold in Kenya are based on technology that hasn’t changed in
80 years. Above: Rod brakes and gas lamp.

They decorate their bikes to stand out.

to make room for
the passenger.
The bicycles are not ergonomic and it is difficult for a passenger
to carry their shopping.

major issue for Boda Boda.

Young men and teens who can’t make it as Boda Boda sometimes
become street kids, sniffing glue all day and gambling.
In May 2005 Worldbike began a trial market of an improved
Boda Boda bicycle, the Bigga Boda.
Using basic hand tools, plus a welder, any small shop in the
developing world can produce our technology.
You start by creating the jigs and fixtures out of basic steel.
Jigs allow you to perform repeated procedures quickly and accurately.

We work with local craftswomen who hand-weave the reed seats.
One Bigga Boda can be used to deliver four more.
Cookware produced in the Juacali, or informal sector.
The Juacali craftsmen are highly skilled, but are used to working
with the most basic tools and no safety gear.
A Juacali district craftsman reuses steel from oil drums to
make hinges.
Worldbike set up a shop within the Juacali district to produce the Bigga Boda
We are making change from within the Juacali community by
teaching about better tools and safety procedures.
A Bigga Boda rider captured in East Africa’s largest newspaper.
This Bigga Boda trial customer reported an immediate
increase of 30% in weekly Boda Boda earnings.

• Gleichgesinnte zusammen zu bringen, um
Projekte sinnvoll anzugehen.
• Brücken zwischen der Fahrradbranche und den
Lobbyisten zu bauen. Zusammen sind wir stark.
