BRUSHES
Year after year, OAS’s Happy Dot ®, OAS’s Orchid Bamboo, and OAS’s Flow brushes top the bestsellers list. Own these three
brushes and accomplish just about everything in your journey through Chinese brush painting, calligraphy and Sumi-e from the
start.
Happy Dot ®
H1C: $12 Brush Tip: 7/8” x 3/16”
OAS’s Happy Dot offers versatility that keeps a point.
Uses: Small scale strokes with point, e.g. bamboo leaves,
grass orchid flower, leaf veins, grass leaves, small calligraphy
Orchid Bamboo M
H2C: $25 Brush Tip: 1 3/8” x 3/8”
For larger strokes with versatility, add the OAS Orchid Bamboo Medium (most popular) to your Happy Dot. It mimics the
Happy Dot with its point and bounce.
Uses: Medium-Large blade like strokes or strokes with a point,
e.g. bamboo and grass orchid leaves, iris leaves, petals with
a point like lotus or tulip; medium calligraphy strokes
OAS Flow
C2C: $17 Brush Tip: 1 3/16” x 3/8”
PAPER
OAS’s Flow brush is soft with a stiff core. It performs rounder
supple strokes with flexibility while still keeping a tip.
Uses: Round strokes, e.g. plum blossom petals, chrysanthemum
petals, branches, fuller leaves, small dots; small-medium size
calligraphy
Some of an artist’s most triumphant moments happen during practice. The brush is freer and the paper seems willing. OAS’s
practice papers show color nuances and gradations with moisture sensitivities that should be practiced and mastered in order to
succeed in brush painting and Sumi-e. Therefore, if a masterpiece should happen by accident, these wet-mount beautifully.
OAS Practice Roll
Try our new twelve inch width size!
P03A: $8 12” x 50’ continuous feet New!
P03: $12 18” x 50’ continuous feet
A continuous, machine-pressed raw rice paper with bleed
sensitivities similar to a double shuen/xuan. Teachers love the

start for beginners to master their moisture control at the
start.

2014 introduced Sakura White & Gold and “the set” that included one of each of the color paints and a sample of black colored
shuen. It ended up being the most purchased gift item this past holiday season.
Sakura White & Gold Set
WCSKSET: $30
One 30 mL white, one 30 mL gold and six: approximate 13
¼” x 9 ¼” sheets of black shuen
Like ink, white can be a great friend to all colors. When
diluted, a smooth white can add transparency and fluidity to
other colors. Concentrated, white can add body and provide
a focal point (like the center of a flower’s stamen or pollen
dots). Gold can be a subtle wash over a stroke, an outline, a
defined vein in a leaf, pollen dots or just striking strokes on
their own! Explore the possibilities.
Lesson Offered Separately …

Techniques Using Sakura White and Gold
Plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum and camellia flower
are all illustrated with step-by-step diagrams to create simple
compositions using Sakura’s white and gold on black shuen.

Mail Art
How My Introduction to Etegami Changed The Way I Send Mail
By Jashin Yeh Panza
ETEGAMI SIMPLY DEFINED. In Japanese, Etegami means “picture art” which combines simple hand painted images with
words usually in postcard form mailed inexpensively through the postal system. Follow me as I share with you my version of “the
art of gift giving.”
My very first was a “thank you” message to
my father-in-law. He treated Keith and I to a
round of golf for his “Father’s Day” celebration. I did it on Premium Double Shuen,
dry mounted it to card stock in OAS’s Paint
Your Own: Shikishi Style Card Kit.

Card Kit
Close friends of my inlaws gave us several
potted plumerias. They’re blooming effortlessly in our front yard. The wife of the
couple has been battling with cancer. I sent
a piece of mail art to share a “thinking of
you”. It was painted on Barley Shuen then
dry mounted on OAS’s Paint Your Own:
Shikishi Style Card Kit.
Color Shuen: Barley
P04BA: $15 - 5: 27” x 54” sheets
PSKIT5: $20 - 5: 236# 5 ¼” cards,
sample bottle of gold, some paste and
a plastic palette knife for paste application.
My rendition of a “Buffalo Chicken Dip” is
a hit at every party. I always email the recipe
to whoever asks, but when they keep asking
for it? I thought if I made a “mail art” recipe
card, they wouldn’t tend to lose it among
their endless inbox of emails.

This past Labor Day holiday we drove up to
visit my husband’s aunt and uncle. We test
drove his vintage jaguar. The car was tiny!
To thank them for hosting us the whole
weekend, I sent this piece of “mail art” with
a message: nothing but the wind in our hair!
Western Mounting Cards
PYOWM01: $6 - 10: 60# 4x6” cards
Dad taught a “black swan” workshop. I was
inspired with a “mail art” with a message: the
most important thing a girl wears is her confidence. My neighbor’s daughter is a pre-teen
dancer new to makeup. I sent a box over
with this black swan mail art. I used Strathmore River Point cut down to Postcards.

Also includes mini lesson on making your

One of my “thank you” cards for all the
Christmas gifts I received this past holiday
season. Message will include: “You’re All
Heart”. I used “108 Flowers: Book 1” Calla
Lily lesson for inspiration.

Tip Of The Quarter: Mounting
Dry mounting with a spray adhesive, silicone or paste can be ideal for small works.
It’s easier to handle and permanent creases are less likely to occur during the process.
However, wet mounting is sometimes preferred for larger works. Here’s a brief walkthrough on the process plus a great tip on how to use a blotter to prevent heavy layers
of color/ink that may tend to bleed when you go to wet-mount.
WET MOUNTING DEFINED. Mounting is the process of stretching and reinforcing artwork done on rice paper with a stronger paper backing. It involves getting the
entire painting wet with paste and backing it to another paper to create a finished
masterpiece.
1. Cut a piece of an absorbent raw paper, like OAS’s Practice Roll slightly larger than
the painting. This is the “blotter”.
2. Cut your preferred Mounting paper (see Home / Products / Paper / Mounting online for suggestions) so that it’s 2 inches
longer than all four sides of your painting. This is the “backing” paper.
3. Place “the blotter” down on the table and the painting face down on top of it.
4. Brush an even layer of OAS’s Paste (M1A) over the back of the painting.
5. Layer the backing paper on top of the pasted painting so that the painting ends up positioned in the center of the backing
paper. Firmly press the backing against your painting. Lift a corner to confirm the painting adhered to the backing. Once
confirmed, return the corner to the table top.
6. Apply a liberal amount of glue around the back edge of the backing paper about 1 ½” in width. This should leave a clean
space about ½” between the glue edge and the edge of the painting. This is important.
7. Lift the backed painting from one corner and affix the glue edges to a plywood board approximately ¾” thick. If the blotter
goes with the painting, carefully peel it off. Some colors that may bleed during the wet mounting process will absorb onto the
blotter. The blotter is a back up so it doesn’t bleed and ruin your painting. Let it dry on the board over night.
8. The next day, touch the painting to make sure it’s dry. It should be completely flat and wrinkle free. Use an x-acto knife and
cut around the edge of your painting. Perhaps leave ¼” border of the backing paper so a framer can have some space to work
with a mat. The painting should pop off the plywood board.

November 30 Day Challenge
By Fiona Beach
They say art as a form of therapy is great for de-stressing our busy lives, increasing
our self-awareness, and boosting our confidence. Now, add that into the context of
a small community of skilled artists, and you’ve got yourself a Mecca of positivity,
which is especially important during the holiday season. Throughout the winter
months, we get so wrapped up and overwhelmed by the gift-giving, holiday parties,
travel, and endless amount of cooking that needs to be done, that taking time for
ourselves seems out of the question. Without tapping into our creativity on a dayto-day basis, we often lose sight of ourselves and what matters most to us.
Being only an outside viewer to OAS’s 30-Day Painting Challenge, I did not expect
to see the results of the challenge as mutually therapeutic as many of the participants may have. However, over the course of the month, I had the blessing of
witnessing a community strengthen, and was reminded of how crucial it is to slow
down and leave room for self-reflection and kindness during these stressful months.
Not only were the participants capable of posting their artwork (most) of the days,
many of them continued to take time out of their day to offer kind words and
advice to other participants. Even with the obstacles many of them faced, like being
sick, having a long day at work, or entertaining relatives over Thanksgiving weekend, our challengers managed to slow down, grab a paintbrush, and perform what I
think is the greatest form of therapy.
OAS’s 30-Day Painting Challenge aimed to bring together artists from all over
the world in hopes of creating a community and developing interconnectedness
through painting. These connections, no matter how small or short-lived they are,
can make a huge impression on our lives and encourage us to keep painting, cooking, or any other form of art we participate in. Hopefully, seeing the many different
forms of Asian art was able to inspire the participants and our followers on Facebook to slow down, especially around the holidays, and cherish those moments that
we do have to let our creativity flow and ease our minds. I can definitely say it did
the same for me.
Jill Carr-Hilton dedicated the last week of the
challenge to mastering the pagoda and landscape,
her final piece full of depth and vibrant washes.
Robin Yoshida’s fun and light-hearted paintings
are inspired by her day-to-day adventures, like
swimming with pufferfish while she dives.

108 FLOWERS by Ning Yeh
Later this year, OAS will release the final volume in Ning Yeh’s 108 Flowers Four Book Set.
“108 Flowers” by Ning Yeh is being described by one of his A+ students as being an “Encyclopedia” to painting flowers for the
Chinese Brush artist! Explore through the first three volumes as he walks the reader through illustrations of the first eighty-one
flowers.
Ning starts with an introduction of material and flower painting basics. Each flower subject has step-by-step notes on color
preparation, brush use and composition detail. He introduces each lesson with a picture of the finished painting, an original
by Ning Yeh, accompanied with the English name of the flower, its Chinese name and meaning. He details each stroke on the
original with numeric sequence in step-by-step fashion. Follow his notes and you will complete eighty-one and soon the last
twenty-seven different subjects from beginning to end.
108 Flowers: Book 4 by Ning Yeh: A Sneak Peek!
Persimmon can symbolize “affairs” or “matters” in Chinese. It’s a well wishing for
“everything goes smoothly”, and when paired with the Mandarin orange, it can be a
wish for good fortune in all your matters. What a great lesson to take a sneak peek
for the Chinese New Year!

CHINESE NEW YEAR Thursday, February 19th, 2015
Welcomes the Year of the Sheep/Goat/
Ram!
1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015
Born the year of the sheep? They tend to be shy and warmhearted. They can be
limited by restrictions, but will always find solution. They work when they’re least
expected to and cannot be reached by being pushed. They are often found in the
arts because of the elegant and independent creativity. Artist Michelangelo was born
in the year of the sheep.
Sheep are wise and gentle. The horse, hare, and the boar are your model zodiacs.
Working together, you will achieve greatness!
