For years we have prided ourselves on our "green" philosophy: Strategic use of herbicide for minimal environmental impact OFFICE HOURS: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday GATE HOURS: SUMMER 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM—Daily EARLY SPRING AND LATE FALL 8:00 AM to Dusk—Daily WINTER 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM—Daily Visit us on the web at www.HillsOfRest.com Plant species selected for drought and heat tolerance Land Conservation spaces that not only conserve ground space (two burials per grave) they also conserve money (average savings of about $1,500 – a significant "green" advantage of another kind!) A dual-usage agreement for the waterway that runs through the park with the City of Sioux Falls that allows drainage during heavy rains – conserving land, and eliminating erosion and flooding Maintaining a natural setting where plant and animal life are the focus for visitors Creation of the Wildwood Cremation Garden that provides for many interments in a smaller area while offering many types of memorialization options for families that choose cremation A new organic fertilizing program that eliminates harsh chemical fertilizers, reduces runoff and provides nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and develops rich color, deep roots and disease resistant turf Since 1933 Happy Spring! God Bless, Steve Johnson Swan Song from the conservators of Hills of Rest Memorial Park Cremation Seminar Several years ago, Hills of Rest began a quarterly program to answer basic questions about costs, options and legal requirements in regard to cremation. Here are some comments we have received: "Very informative! All of my questions about cremation were answered." –Mark, Sioux Falls. "I liked the relaxed and conversational style of this seminar. And best of all, it was free!" –Josephine, Sioux Falls. If you are considering cremation, call us at 338-6551 to reserve space at our next Cremation Seminar. We have removed a number of older trees that were either diseased or damaged in ice storms. The grounds crew has also removed scrub trees from the perimeter of the park and trimmed other trees to keep limbs and branches up out of the way. As we remove undesirable trees, we have been planting a variety of heartier new trees. RHETT AND SCARLETT (our two new swans) have settled in nicely into their new home at Hills of Rest. We are hopeful that they will nest this year. Last year was their first year here, and they chose not to. Remember, swans are very territorial and not domesticated. Their beauty is best appreciated from a distance. JAK, THE WONDERDOG, is in his 3rd year of successful duty keeping the Canadian geese out of the park while living the high life that an 88-acre yard to run in can bring. Jak loves to greet visitors and he's everybody's friend. Be sure to say hello to him if you see him. He loves the attention. Swan Song from the conservators of Hills of Rest Memorial Park FROM OUR ARCHIVES Memorial Day Flowers Several thousand visitors will bring flowers to decorate the graves of loved ones this Memorial Day. Here are some helpful tips: 1. Look for our Memorial Day Flower Order Form in your mailbox toward the end of April. Select one of two special bouquets for Memorial Day placement on the order form and return through the mail. Original date of publication: December 14, 1951. Newspaper articles / photos reprinted with permission from the Argus Leader. Millennium Legacy Fund As the Sioux Falls area continues to grow and expand, it is certain that very few things will be recognizable in the next 100 years. One of the few exceptions is Hills of Rest Memorial Park. If you are looking for a way to honor a loved one that will stand the test of time, consider a donation to our Millennium Legacy Fund. All donations are tax deductible and are managed by the Sioux Falls Area Foundation. The goal of the fund is to improve and enhance the Wildwood Chapel and Mausoleum to make it available for families to use for memorial services. If you would like to be a part of this important effort or desire more information, call 338-6551. 2. Place your Memorial Day flower order on-line at our website. Keep in mind that a larger selection of flowers is always available on-line at www.HillsOfRest.com for placement at a loved one's grave for any occasion. 3. As always, look for us under the blue tent on the cemetery grounds during the Memorial Day weekend where bouquets will be available to purchase. Our staff will help you locate graves, help you with a stuck flower vase or answer any questions you might have. Please observe our flower regulations for the holiday Beginning at noon on the Friday before the Memorial Day national holiday, the cemetery will allow the placement of all types of floral displays, including cut flowers, potted plants, artificial flowers, wreaths and flags. These displays can stay in place for one week until the weekend after Memorial Day.
