he Burlington train station in downtown Omaha opened in 1898 in time
for the Trans-Mississippi International Exposition and attracted visitors from
around the world. It became a landmark
on the National Register of Historic Places.
But when passenger service ended, so did
the Burlington Station in 1974. It seemed
destined for the wrecking ball. But KETV
and its owner, Hearst Television, have completely rehabilitated the building into a television studio. Now is your chance to see it

OPC corporate membership as an employee benefit
T
he Omaha Press Club Marketing/Membership Committee is
launching a corporatemembership
campaign to target Omaha employers,
especially companies with a downtown
presence. A membership brochure will
be rolled out as part of the project.
Corporate members receive full access
to OPC member benefits, which include
personal dining privileges, reduced
member rates for OPC events, free
rental for events, reciprocal dining status
at clubs around the nation and internationally, and more.
If you work for a company that may
be interested in offering OPC membership as an employee benefit (the mem-
bership can be structured so employees
pay their own membership dues, or the
company can pay the dues for its employees), please contact Bridget Brooks

Chamber’s Brown says:
Omaha offering jobs to ConAgra employees
By Claudia Bohn
Communications Committee
O
maha’s “We Don’t Coast” slogan
has certainly proven to be true in
recent years. Under the guidance
of David Brown, president and CEO of
the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, Omaha has seen 535 projects,
27,571 jobs and $5.2 billion in capital
investments in the past 10 years.
Brown told attendees at the Nov. 19
Omaha Press Club Education Forum to
not expect anything less in the coming
years.
With that success can also come some
heartache. ConAgra’s recent announcement regarding the relocation of its
corporate headquarters to Chicago was
certainly a blow to the Omaha economy
and job front. Unfortunately, Brown and
his team had very little opportunity to
change that decision.
“We reached out as often as anyone
could do,” Brown said. “I could call,
be on their doorstep, etc., but they were
not interested in talking to us about their
project and how to keep it here. We could
have offered every incentive possible –
but they did not want to have any discussions with us, the State of Nebraska or
the City of Omaha. They had made their
decision.”
Once made aware of the pending relocation and layoffs, Brown and the chamber team got to work and developed a
strategy to reach out to laid-off ConAgra
employees with the intent of keeping
them in Omaha.
“We got word on a Thursday and we
had a strategy in place first thing Friday
morning,” Brown said. “With Omaha’s
low unemployment and a potential of
1,200 people entering our workforce – we
had a marvelous opportunity before us.
Our strategy was to keep those people
here.”
Within hours, eight of Omaha’s biggest
employers came to the table with nearly
800 jobs. A newly designed chamber website now serves as a networking tool for
employers and job seekers. Networking
events, career fairs and cocktail gatherings
have and will continue to occur as part of
a 10-month strategy.
“There was a huge vacuum that could
have been filled with angst or optimism . We decided on the latter,” Brown said.
“Since that announcement, we have been
working day in and day out to make sure
these people have access to resources. We
will do everything we can to keep our talent
where it belongs – in our community. We
want them to remember why they chose
Omaha in the first place – quality of life,
schools, affordable housing and cultural
events, etc.”

At the lunch, Pivovar highlighted

Cole Huff – as players Creighton will be
counting on to elevate the program.
In its second year in the Big East Conference, Creighton went 14-19 last season,

y now, as a Press Club member you
have likely received a letter from
the OPC Foundation as part of our
annual fund drive. Last year’s campaign
helped the foundation increase scholarship levels for the first time in years, long
overdue in the face of ever-rising tuition
costs. We hope to continue those efforts
this year. I hope you will again consider
journalism students and the future of the
profession as you make your charitable
donations before the end of the year.
And don’t forget to save the date for
Friday, April 1. Once again, the Omaha

staged on April Fools’ Day. If you missed
last year’s show, talk to anyone who was

build on in 2016. Hope to see you there.
