How Hospice Beat the Winter Blues …
For the second year in a row a local farmer selected
Hospice of Orleans to receive a $2,500 donation from
America’s Farmers Grow Communities, a Monsanto Fund.
Charles Mathes of Mathes Farms in Holley, and Jeff
Cunningham, Monsanto’s Northeast Business Manager,
kicked off the Hospice Beat the Winter Blues event at
Leonard Oakes Estate Winery in Medina by presenting
Nyla Gaylord, Director of Development, with a check for
$2,500.
“Hospice has helped a number of people in my family and
I’m happy to help them,” said Charles Mathes as he and
Jeff Cunningham presented the large ceremonial check.
Jeff Cunningham explained that “This gift is Monsanto’s
way of supporting the local communities in which we sell
seeds and other agricultural products to local farmers.”
Hospice of Orleans will use this gift to help fund costs
associated with renovating a room at the main office for
use by the bereavement group. Renovations will make
the room look like a comfortable living room where there
is ample space for group members to gather in an inviting
atmosphere.

known locally for their regular performances with jazz,
blues, and jazz fusion bands at the Dinosaur Grill in
Rochester and local events. The basket raffle featured

Comb, The Soap Cottage, Pudgies Vegetables, Pullman

Detailing and Bill Blackburn.
Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, represented by brother and
sister duo Wendy Oakes Wilson and Darrel Oakes, served
as hosts of the event and provided the first glass of Blanc
d’Orleans wine free. Since 2013, for every bottle of their
white wine, Blanc d’Orleans sold, $1. 00 goes to Hospice of
Orleans, the county’s only licensed provider of
comprehensive end-of-life care.
According to Mary Anne Fischer, Executive Director, this
first time event was a sell-out and a huge success. “We
hope to hold a similar event next year. We are very
grateful for the support of the community, for our
entertainers, donors, caterers, and the Oakes family for
their long term support of Hospice of Orleans with their
signature wine Blanc d’ Orleans.”

they provide an important source of
revenue that supports services that
cannot be billed to insurance carriers.
Look for us at our booth at the Albion
Strawberry Festival. We will be
selling tickets for our July 4th Ducks
Ahoy! Duck Race in Lyndonville.
The Hospice Duck mascot will be
marching in the parade. July 29th is
our 19th Annual Hospice of Orleans
Golf Tournament. There is still
room for more golfers! We have
some wonderful prizes and raffle items
such as half-day Charter Fishing Tours
and wooden lawn furniture. I hope
to see you at one or all of our
FUNdraising events!
Our Memorial Garden is in full bloom. Stop by and
see it! Our many volunteers have been busy weeding
and mulching and it looks lovely. There are benches
and a sparkling water fountain – a perfect place to
chat or spend time alone in reflection. The walk
way that leads to the garden has some new memorial
bricks. Memorial bricks are still available and may be
inscribed with a personal message of remembrance or
tribute. One of my favorites reads:
“I’d like the memory of me to be a
happy one.”

As you can see from the feature story in this
newsletter, we are truly excited to launch the Pet
Peace of Mind® program. Response to the media
coverage has been unprecedented. This quote posted
on
Batavia News On-line and in the print edition of the
paper, captures the essence of the program and the
sentiments of many of the people that contacted us in
response to our request for support for this program.
Hospice is currently recruiting for volunteers to help
with events, serve food or work as a greeter in the
Residence, provide in-home care, and help with
administrative tasks. Please consider joining us in
implementing our mission of “embracing those facing
advanced illness with optimal levels of comfort,
compassion, and expertise.”

worst of times ended up the
best of times.” In his typical humorous fashion, he writes
of his experience with serious illness and reflects on his life
while in a hospice residence. Like many people who forgo
treatment, Art lived longer than expected – so, he decided
to write a book about his experience. His book offers
many insights into hospice from the point of view of the
patient. Let me know if you would like to borrow my
copy. Let’s make this a surprise gift that keeps on giving.

disease who didn’t have hospice services.”

Agency Accomplishments
Ms. Fisher detailed key accomplishments of 2014.
These included implementing changes in employee
medical and dental coverage, evaluation of the agency’s
cost structure and saving over $350 in postage alone
with increased use of email and online volunteer
scheduling. “Hospice of Orleans has grown from an
average daily census of 5 to 17.”

continue to look for new opportunities to raise funds
through events and grant seeking, as well as promoting
new financial giving options that fall outside of probate
and wills.
Agency priorities for 2015
include:
- implementing the new Pet Peace of Mind®
program
- strengthening the infrastructure of the
agency to ensure its long term viability,
- investigating a group purchasing program
with other area hospice programs,
- continuing to educate our community about
the benefits of hospice.
Volunteer Recognition
At the Hospice Annual Meeting, Mary Anne Fischer
applauded the work of the Hospice volunteers and
reported that in 2014, more than 150
volunteers contributed over 6,800 hours to the
Hospice mission of providing comfort,
compassion and expertise to Orleans County
residents facing serious illness. She attributed a
cost savings of over $110,000 last year to
volunteer involvement.
Finance Director Joel Allen reviewed the 2014 Budget
Expenses for the agency and pointed out that more than
90% of the expenses billed for patient services go to
direct patient care. He noted that patient costs for
the Martin-Linsin Residence are in line with budget
projections. While there has been a slight decrease in
home care, all other expenses and revenue projections
were on target for 2014.
Nyla Gaylord, Director of Development and Community
Relations, reported on past and upcoming events and
thanked Wendy Wilson of Leonard Oakes Estate Winery
for her support in initiating a new fundraising event at
the Winery, “Beat the Winter Blues.” She noted that
in the future Hospice will be producing a screening
tool “What Help Do You Need?” to better assist
Don Algeo 2014 Volunteer of the Year
Volunteer Coordinator Christine Fancher noted that “Don
is always willing to help. He volunteers at the Residence
four or more hours a week and goes to a patient’s home
and prepares meals twice a week.” Algeo also serves on
the Hospice of Orleans Board of Directors.

Pawlak
received the
Mary
Janet
Sahukar
Award,
named for
Hospice of
Orleans’
founding
director. The award recognizes a community member who
understands, embraces and supports the organization’s
mission in sacrificial ways. “Jerome always says ‘yes’
when we ask if we can sell bouquets at his Save-a-Lot
Stores or ask for any other assistance.” said Mary Anne
Fischer as she presented the award. Jerome told the
group that his father had been a supporter of Hospice
since its inception and that he is proud to carry on that
tradition.
Lynn Short, former owner of Arjuna Florist, and Pamela
Reamer, professor of Nursing at SUNY Brockport, were
elected to serve two year terms on the Board of Directors.
The Board had previously elected Dennis Piedimonte,
owner of JP’s Farm Market in Holley, to a three year term.

Merrill Grinnell Funeral Home received the
Hospice Business/Civic Award for their role
in developing and supporting the Classic Car Show for the
past two years.
A Special Recognition Award was presented
to Leonard Oakes Estate Winery for their
many contributions to fundraising for Hospice. Wendy
Wilson accepted the award for the Winery. Her voice
filled with emotion, as she said “I can’t thank Hospice
enough for taking care of one of our long time, much
loved employees this past year. Two of our employees
are receiving services now. Hospice staff has been
incredible! Hospice has been near and dear to our family
and we are happy to support them in any way we can.”

Rochester, visited Hospice of Orleans for several hours
Thursday, April 2nd to learn more about the new Pet Peace
of Mind® program. Fellow reporter Connie Howard had
been attracted to the story of Denzel the long-haired
dachshund, who was adopted by Hospice Nurse Donna

“I’ve only had about an
hour and half of sleep,”
she explained to Kelly,
“but I’m here to support Hospice and tell Denzel’s story so
that more people can get help with their pets when they
can’t take care of them. Hospice is so so important to me.
I’ve lost a lot of loved ones and I feel it is a privilege to
work with people as they near the end of their lives. It is a
real privilege, and I’m happy I can help as a nurse and
happy to help Denzel’s owner have peace of mind
knowing that his beloved
dog would have a good
home on a farm where he
was loved.”
Pet Peace of Mind®
is a national program
developed and funded by
the Banfield Charitable
Trust. Hospice of Orleans is
only the second hospice to
start the program in New
