Reusables Division Brochure # 030– 02 Staytight STAYTIGHT STOCKYARD CABLE Typical installation of Staytight cable using ironbark posts and steel capping rail. Sandalwood Feedlots, Dalby, Qld. WHAT IT IS :- It is a high tensile, high quality but low cost wire strand comprised of 7 wires or 19 wires, depending on the size. It is galvanised and oiled. Commonly used sizes are 6.5mm and 8.5mm for holding yards, and 10mm for heavy duty areas such as feedlots. WHAT IT DOES:- When used as stockyard wire it provides a heavy duty barricade that does not need retensioning. This is a major benefit in intensively used areas such as feedlots. This characteristic also simplifies construction and so reduces cost. Extra fittings such as turnbuckles are not needed. HOW IT DOES IT:- Because Staytight cable is elastic, it stretches and rebounds, instead of moving the strainer post when impacted by animals, vehicles, or frosty nights. This beneficial property, only available in Andromeda Staytight wire, is provided by the helical shape of the wires. Brochure 030 – 02 Extensive use of Staytight wire to infill panels in a large feedlot in the Riverina of NSW. Yambinya Feedlot, Deniliquin. Constructed by Gallagher Fencing - Deniliquin. Originally made from used mining ropes, this material has created a quiet revolution in the construction and upkeep of yards, because of its high quality steel, elastic properties and economical termination methods. So far we have manufactured about 3000 tonnes of this material. It should be noted that nearly all of this, some of it installed 15 years ago, is still in use today, making it a very durable industrial material indeed. Picture at right shows another Riverina feedlot under construction. Note this fence has no capping rail to counter the compression loads generated by the tight wires. With this simplified and economical design it is important to ensure strong and durable strainer assemblies, usually 2 or 3 steel posts, braced together and set into concrete at least 1500 mm deep. This design can only be used on straight runs, but the distance between strainers is not limited. Typical termination method for Staytight wire This picture shows the simplicity with which Staytight wire is terminated into the posts. It is simply passed round the post and wrapped back into itself and made off with two or threerope clamps. It should be noted that no turnbuckles are needed with this material, because it is installed under tension, it will remain this way for a long time unless the strainers move. This is a typical construction for a heavy duty yard. We recommend at least 4 wire runs (preferably 5), no more than 250mm apart, preferably 300mm. Andromeda Industries Pty Ltd. Brochure 030 – 02 ANDROMEDA STAYTIGHT CABLE - General notes, sizes and specifications Technically, Staytight cable is a wire strand – that is a number of wires are twisted together to form a more flexible entity than a single wire filament of the same cross-sectional area. This construction is known as seven wire strand. The 6.5 and 8.5mm Staytight are of this construction This construction is known as a nineteen wire strand. The 10mm and larger are of this construction The reason for using stranded wire, is to provide a material that is thick enough to be visible and strong enough, yet is flexible enough to bend and connect into the fence structure. STAYTIGHT STOCKYARD CABLE – Standard sizes and specifications Size and construction 6.5mm 7/2.1 8.5mm 7/2.79 10mm 19/2.0 Strength - tonnes at 1270 MPa grade Standard put-up Weight per coil of 200 metres Notes on application 3.2 coil 200 metres 46kg Used for cattle holding yards 5.6 coil 200 metres 76kg Use for holding yards and feedlots 7.9 coil 200 metres 100kg Used for feedlots Note: Staytight wire can be made any size if the application can justify a special design and suitable production run. A minimum production run for special sizes is approx. 15,000 metres. Stranded wire is also used for structural work at feedlots The stranded feedstock wire from which Staytight is made is also used in the construction of shade structures over the feedlots. Enquiries for this application are welcome. The 8.5mm is available in reels of 4,700 metres, and the 10mm is available in reels of 4,000m. Note: the reels are very heavy! Need good lifting gear. Andromeda Industries also manufactures or processes a number of other materials, mostly from used conveyor belts, which are often used in yards and general agricultural applications. • Splitbelt, made from conveyor belts, and used for yards, fences, horse floats, stables • Holeybelt, which is Splitbelt with 20mm holes used for mats for utes, trucks and horse floats • Rubber rails, precision cut strips of conveyor belt, used for arena fencing, safe for horse and rider • Envirobelt, heavy duty Holeybelt used for landscaping, beach access and dune conservation • Blasting mats, woven from conveyor belts, used to prevent rock fly when blasting in city areas Andromeda Industries Pty Ltd. The high strength wires are very hard, and no normal type of wire cutter will breach it. Staytight wire pulled up tight over simple frames supports 1800 mm wide Splitbelt to form a long feed trough in so-called “sacrifice paddocks” in NW of NSW. Some notes on fence design and construction using Staytight wire Various combinations of steel tube and wire are possible. Secure strainer assemblies are critical. Well designed bracing method ensures that the Staytight wire has a good anchorage. This is needed at both ends of a straight run.
