Report Jim Suhr The past couple months have been busy ... and that is good! I have been to a couple fine autocross events run by our new SOLO chair Eric Schmidt, and a super Rallycross event put together by Chris Hastings. I was really excited to see new drivers and spectators catching a bit of racing fever at these events and at our last membership meeting. This is a great trend and I hope to welcome many new members. I think a fan favorite at the last Solo was the demonstration on converting a Miata hardtop into a Soft Top ;). Big Thanks to our friends at OVR helping with Rallycross, Cincinnati SCCA for the joint SOLO event, and both Mike Wolf and the Miami Vally Sports Car Club for the Double Header Solo events and sharing of equipment and course set-up. Also a Huge Thank You the Eric for the impromptu carpentry work to repair the trailer door. The regional racers have been kept on their toes with the numerous opportunities at Mid-Ohio, and the national crowd is deep in Runoffs preparation (only about a week away). The Runoffs this year are a BIG deal. If you have thought about going (racer, worker or spectator), this is the year to go. The final year at Road America + being the 50th anniversary has brought about record registrations. As of this writing, there are 711 total entries, and in my class (SM) there are a whopping 72. Friends and top notch racing will abound, so come on out and join the fun! Looking a bit farther down the track, annual award nominations and officer nominations for 2014 are coming up. If you are interested in being an officer or committee chairman, please contact Jerry Stem or myself for more info on the positions or process. Also start thinking about who you would like to nominate for one of WOR's illustrious awards. There are still opportunities this season to put yourself in the running for the less illustrious awards too (e.g. Cone Killer, Horse's Ass, etc.). I have some ideas... See all you at Bullwinkle's on the 10th! - Jim The Docktor Is In Rick Docken NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) at Mid-Ohio What if they had a race and nobody came? No--what if they had a race and EVERY body came? That’s what the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) promised for its first appearance at Mid-Ohio, in midAugust. According to the message boards and practice day buzz, something well north of 100,000 tickets were sold, before the race. Some were saying the real number was closer to 130,000! By the looks of the crowd on race day, it was short of 100,000 but it rivaled Indy and Superbikes in their heyday. Except that their hay has been harvested and not much is left in the barn. This is the only big show left, if a big show is what you want. Or what you need to cover the mortgage. So why is it that I’m writing about the “roundy-rounders” for a sports car publication? Well, I was attending the Spring OVR National and in the course of a conversation with a friend of mine, she lamented that she missed the Trans Am. But, what is Nationwide but 40 V-8powered Mustang and Camaro (and Camry!) race cars blasting around the track? Count me there! This had been the NNS weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (“sair-kweet Jee Veel-nuh”) the past few years. But the “bon homes” must have gotten a little too full of themselves, so NNS grabbed their toys and left town, maybe to never return. Their miscalculation is MidOhio’s gain, as the track has inked a three-year deal to host this race. I was surprised that the Friday practice, usually very light for most pro events, seemed rather “full.” Further consultation with the message boards suggested an early arrival (7:30 or so for a 2:30 green flag). So I dragged myself out of bed and headed out at O-dark-thirty for a long and, hopefully entertaining day of racing. Which wasn’t too bad, except that early morning radio is, well, it isn’t. Since I don’t have XM radio (serious!) I had to fumble for a station, finally settling on an 80’s oldies broadcast. Except that the first song I tuned in to was “Safety Dance.” I still can’t get the refrain out of my mind! S-s-s-s A-a-a-a F-ff-f AAUGHH! I was mildly surprised at the goodnatured disposition of the crowd. There was certainly a lot of traditional NASCAR stuff—shirts, hats, flags, and bumper stickers—to proclaim the handful of acres outside Lexington as a temporary “NASCAR Nation” but all-in-all, spectators were well behaved and friendly. Very much like the traditional sports car crowd and not at all like the rowdies that I guess I was expecting? As I mentioned, the NNS seemed to be “like” the old Trans Am. Ironically, the only undercard for the weekend was the current rendition of that old series. While competitive and with a full field of 35 cars (in three classes), this seemed to be more of a club event. SCCA sports car racing regulars may recognize such names as Amy Ruman and Peter Gregg, who were among the front runners. After Trans Am was lunch, with the NNS set to be flagged off in midafternoon. Among the “halftime” entertainment was a segment of THE, Ohio State University marching band. At one point, they invited spectators to join in on what became a very poor “Script Ohio.” To be honest, it probably looked more like a version you would see on High Street at midnight after the Michigan game! Finally it was time for the big race. Events during practice said indicated that China Beach is where the action would be early, so the crowd really swelled up on the adjoining hillside. Except—for the first time in an hundred years--the race green-flagged at the start-finish line! By the time the field got to the backstretch 90 (turn 4? Turn 5?) they were all in good order and, oh well. So I matriculated down to the short chute leading to the 90R entry to Thunder Valley. A lot of action took place here, as cars approached blindly at full throttle then had to brake suddenly to avoid causing a schmozzle, as David Hobbs might say. Except schmozzle they did. And often. Nothing serious, mind you, but most of the “offs” required some type of assist, reducing the action to full course yellow, which bunched up the cars and created the possibility of yet ANOTHER caution a few laps after green. ZAM! ZAM! ZAM! WRECK! Caution. Snorge. Repeat. As you might expect, the Penske boys (AJ Almendinger and Ohio’s own Sam Schmidt) gradually wormed their way to the front. AJ (2012 Rolex 24 winner) grabbed the first ever NNS checker at Mid-Ohio for what proved to be a very popular win. There was only one real “buzz kill” and that was that the paddock area was completely closed to spectators. Even on Friday. Even the autograph session was restricted. I don’t see how you can bill yourself as “fan friendly” and at the same time keep the paying public at arm’s length in this way. See you at the next meeting! I attended the last SOLO event recently to show support for our new sucke…I mean volunteer SOLO Chairperson, Eric Schmidt, and to get some photos for this Rev Record and the Facebook page. While I was there, a couple that had been watching asked me if I had been to many of these (my SCCA shirt seemed to catch their attention). After about 5-10 minutes of questions and answers it turned out they were new to the sport, and wondering if it was worth it to set up a Mustang they Jerry Stem tears it up From the collection owned for SOLO. at Roos Farm of Jerry Stem RallyCross Report Chris Hastings Twenty competitors came out to Roos Farm on August 10th for Points Event #3 and one question was on everyone's mind: How muddy will it be? The same question weighed heavily on my mind since Points Event #1 had to be canceled due to excessive rain making the access drive to the site impassable. Luckily, the amount of precipitation leading up to this event was just right. No one had any trouble getting up the hill and the racing surface offered a wide range of grip throughout the day. The first run group consisted of Modified All Wheel Drive (MA), Modified Front Wheel Drive (MF), and Prepared All Wheel Drive (PA). These drivers faced the slimiest surface as they broke in the course and cleared the racing line of its vegetation. Bob Poling built a solid lead in the muddy morning heat over Adam Brock in PA and maintained it in the afternoon heat to finish first in class. In the three Neon class of MF, Bill Ehrman established a 10 second lead over Tim Spellman in the morning heat and expanded it the afternoon. Adam and Michael Wolf battled for the top spot in MA in their shared Subaru Impreza, while ZB Lorenc and Greg Ohlemacher raced to see who could accrue the most cone penalties in their Subaru WRX. In the end, Adam Wolf took first in class and Greg won the 'cone killer' award, amassing over 200 seconds of penalties. The second run group of Modified Rear Wheel Drive (MR) and Stock All Wheel Drive (SA) got to start off with more grip and a cleaner line than the first group and their run times reflected the advantageous conditions. Pete Remner jumped out to an early lead in MR with Chris Hastings over 10 seconds back after the first heat but less than one second ahead of Evan Arthur. Evan turned the tables in the afternoon session, posting the fastest single run of the event and not hitting any cones. It was not enough to catch Pete though, and after 10 timed runs, Evan finished 3.7 seconds behind Pete. Ed Trudeau showed that even the lowliest of the Subaru Impreza line can make a formidable rallycross machine in SA. He took the class lead in the first heat over Miles Voegeli. Miles was able to makeup some time in the afternoon on the more open course and higher grip surface, but could not overcome Trudeau in his 2.2 liter, automatic transmission equipped Impreza. Trudeau had the lowest penalty count (a single cone) and the lowest cumulative score of all entrants. Points Event #4 is quickly approaching on September 7. This event is hosted by OVR and will feature the 'Duel in the Dirt' in the afternoon session. Registration is open now. Also soon to be upon us is the RallyCross National Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma the first weekend of October. Several WOR rallycrossers will be making the trip again so wish them luck. See you in the dirt! This year we sponsored the People’s Choice trophy, and even though the DJ misspelled our name during the announcement (we’re now the SCAA), the gentleman that won the trophy still had a smile on his face. Thank you to the members that answered my call for cars to include, and thank you as well to the members that showed up to help and keep us company. The weather was a bit warm and there weren’t many brochures given away, but a few spectators did stop to talk to us and possibly come check out a SOLO event. Photos by Jerry Stem Rev Ramblings Matthew Manganaro Well people, as we bring this edition of the Rev Record to a close I have just a few notes for you. First of all, as most of you hopefully know, our last Street Survival was a great success and the students had a blast. It was our intention to put on another Street Survival in October. Unfortunately logistical delays and a schedule conflict with the Oct. 6th Regionals at Mid-Ohio made it impractical. Rather than rush and give students a poor experience, we’ve decided to hold off on a WORSCCA Street Survival for this year and start planning for next year’s event. While the August 25th joint Solo with Cincy Region was great, it was a bit hectic. This caused some “issues” with the results which required a bit of time to straighten out. Now that the audit is complete those times will be made available on the WORSCCA website at http://www.worscca.org/racing/sch edule.php?type=1 In the meantime, the PDF edition of the Rev Record will include the full list of times for all 65 racers. You can find it at http://www.worscca.org/rev_record/ Thanks for your patience and keep on racing. Do you have a burning fever to experience the intense competition and camaraderie of Club Racing®? Then regional programs and intense national programs designed for qualifying for the National Championship Runoffs® are your medicine. Not interested in the challenges of wheel-to-wheel competition but still harbor a competitive streak for precision and accuracy at speed? Then SCCA’s Solo® Events program offers over 2000 local competitions annually up to and including a National championship with supporting Divisional championship programs. How about those of you with a need to play in the dirt? SCCA’s RallyCross® program offers competitions similar to Solo events on loose surfaces. RallyCross also has a very competitive National championship structure. The SCCA RoadRally® program is what got SCCA started over 60 years ago. This is the easiest form of competition to enter as it only requires a registered and insured street car of any kind. Normal highway speeds and precise course following are the challenges in this most basic form of motorsport. If you find that competing is not your style, but being close to the competition, the drivers, the cars and the crews and being part of the American motorsport scene is your form of adrenaline, then the SCCA has written the book on motorsport official’s training, licensing and event management. Anyone can volunteer as an official at SCCA events – the wealth of motorsport experience possessed by SCCA members will be imparted to you simply by your enthusiasm and desire to learn. YOU CAN GET IN ON SCCA ACTION LOCALLY AND RIGHT NOW! There are over 110 local regions of the SCCA – from Guam to Hawaii and up to Alaska…down to Florida and up to Maine – which means there is a pocket of SCCA activity near you. Steve Harris Director – Area 4 Great Lakes Division 937 438 3005 (0); 937 681 4484 (C) [email protected] Information for Area 4 Members – Sept., 2013 Dear Area 4 Members, We have some important news today. Please get this out to our members as soon as possible. Roundtable – Scheduling Meeting There will be no Great Lakes Division Roundtable this year. Instead, there will be a Scheduling Meeting, Saturday November 9, 2013 starting at 10:00 AM at my office in Dayton, Ohio: Rixan Associates, Inc. 7560 Paragon Rd. Dayton, Ohio 45459 Directions and motel information can be found here: http://www.rixan.com/ContactUs/FindRixan/tabid/92/Default.aspx Each Region is invited to send three representatives to this meeting, but the only scope of the meeting is to complete the 2014 Road Racing Schedule. With the advent of the “Majors”, the schedule is more structured. We do not expect the meeting to last past 2:00 PM. There is no registration fee, yet a complimentary lunch will be served. Cincy Region is handling the Registration for this meeting through MSR. Go here and scroll down to November 9: http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/calendar The traditional Roundtable meeting will move to March. All SCCA Groups (Club Racing, Solo, PDX, Club Trial and etc.) along with all Club Racing Specialties will be giving the opportunity to hold meetings/training at Spring Training on March 15, 2014 in Findlay, Ohio. This will save GLD Inc. a lot of money as the Scheduling Meeting will cost almost nothing. It also positions our organizational meetings closer to the start of racing season. NCM Motorsports Park While the news coming from Bluegrass Motorsports Park last month was disappointing (but not hopeless), another venue has emerged as a possible place for SCCA racers. The National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, KY has invited the SCCA to tour the facility and start the certification process for future racing. I will be there Saturday, September 28 to do first level track review. Having just gone through this process successfully last year for MIS, we are hopeful for a rapid, yet thorough, review and approval. We’ll keep you informed. 2013 Runoffs If you are going to the Runoffs, be sure to say “hello”. I will be sharing Pace Car duties and will be attending the various CRB Town Hall sessions. Speaking of which, some of these sessions may be fairly interesting as we continue to deal with class consolidation. The SCCA is member driven; let us know your thoughts – participate! 2014 National Convention I am repeating this headline because it is important. If you missed the notice, the National Convention moves to Charlotte, NC next year. We are joining forces with National Trade Productions to establish the North American Motorsports Expo as part of our National Convention, March 7 – 9, 2014. Now, you racers have a good reason to attend the National Convention. More info here: http://www.scca.com/news/index.cfm?cid=51448 As always, let me know if there is anything you need. Yours for a better SCCA, Steve Special thanks to: 2835 Main St Moraine OH 45439 www.colletti-motorsports.org Additional thanks go to Heavenly Bodies and Spa, P’s and Q’s Event Perfectors, Live Well Chiropractic Center, the Wright State Student Automotive Association, and WSU College of Engineering and Computer Science, Department of Interdisciplinary Programs and Professional Development for their help with the June 2013 Street Survival.
