RE’s Corner

My term as RE has come to an end. The torch has been passed to the
very capable hands of Cathy Clark. Scott Johns continues as the Secretary and
Amy Francis will serve one more year in the role of Treasurer. Martin Valent
returns to the board to serve as the Assistant RE, and Chuck Clark takes over as
the Activities Director. Finally, David VanTassel will be the Director at Large
in his first term on the BOD. The first meeting of the year was productive, as
most of the events and meetings are now set for 2012. It looks to be yet another
great year for SWVRSCCA, and I for one can't wait to get back on course! We
will have the 2011 event trophies at the Feb event, and we look forward to seeing you all.

When did you become an SCCA member? What region?
I heard about SCCA through some friends in 2001, but never thought about joining until I had a car to
autocross – I only had a pickup truck at the time. I joined SCCA, in the SWV Region, in November of
2007 and ran my first autocross in April 2008.
Have you held any board positions or obtained any awards?
I am the outgoing Activities Director. I have held that position about three years. I was the G stock
champion in 2009. I said it then and I will say it again: it wasn’t a function of my driving skill but a
function of how many events I ran. We only had about 3 people consistently running G stock that year,
and I just ran decent enough, plus entered most of the events, that the math worked out for me to get
the award. I would love to see more people get started in autocross and I encourage new people to
come out and just run whatever car they have in a stock class. You may just luck into an award!
Have you been a member of other SCCA regions?
No.
Favorite car that you have driven?
Well, it wasn’t the best handling car compared to today’s standards, but probably a 1972 Trans Am
455HO I owned several years ago. It wasn’t so much the driving of the car, as it was the drive in the
car. It was fun to just cruise in something that still had some chrome, unique styling (for the time) and
bulldozer-like torque. It was groovy baby!
Most desired car that you have not yet driven?
Wow, do I have to pick one? I love the styling and sound of a Ferrari, and (in my mind) the Ferrari 458
Italia seems to just be begging me to drive it. But it doesn’t come with a true manual stick shift, so I
might have to go back a few years to the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale. Or the Nissan GT-R. Or the
Ford GT-40. Yea, as if I have my pick.
Have you done any track days? Favorite Track?
I have done track days at MidOhio, VIR and Nelson Ledges. Favorite? Any closed course is exhilarating, it’s just a favorite time to have that rare occasion to go on a track.
Club racing or other type of racing experience?
Hmmm….do slot cars count? Otherwise no.
Influential people you've met or raced against?
I have been fortunate to have some good influences in my life, none are associated with motorsports.
Well except for SWVR; who are the most friendly and helpful people anywhere.
Hobbies other than AutoX?
I did a lot of jetskiing for many years, from Lake Michigan to Daytona Beach. I think I counted 27 different lakes, oceans or rivers I had ridden on in 7 states. But I don’t ride near as much since “aging”
started making wave jumping a little more difficult.
Occupation?
Engineer at Columbia Gas. I didn’t originally plan on being an engineer, but it was probably my fate
when I was 11 and took the 8 hp engine out of my grandpa’s riding mower and used it to “upgrade” my
neighbor’s 3hp Rupp go-cart.
