Coming Soon: NRSCCA events Memories of my long time friend, Steve Fenske by Patt Buell Steven Alan Fenske of Wakarusa, Kansas died Monday May 13th, 2013 at the age of 58. Steve was originally a member of Nebraska Region SCCA. The Fenske’s joined the region in the mid-1970s driving a BMW. Steve ran solos and became a Club Racing corner worker. He also ran Road Rallys and they brought Alissa to her first Rally in 1980 when she was about 6 months old. Hi MidDiv SCCA Members, It is time once again for FSAE Lincoln, June 19-22. The SCCA Foundation is looking for folks who would like to volunteer for all kinds of positions at this years competition. Many colleges will be represented including last years event Winners University of Kansas (KU). I have attached the article that was in our March SportsCar for you to look at again and refresh your memory of FSAE and the SCCA Foundations commitment to supply volunteers for this event. Each day of competition volunteers will be treated to a continental breakfast, coffee and juice. and lunch. Friday night there will be a dinner for volunteers sponsored by the SCCA Foundation and a self paced tour of the Smith Auto Museum. This is a chance to visit with other volunteers/friends and see this amazing museum of car and car stuff. Friday and Saturday are the dynamic events. These events are performance events for the teams and cars. We need grid folks, flaggers, timing folks (stop watch back up) for Saturday, starter/s, black flaggers, announcers for times, etc... Basically all hands on board. These events require a lot of volunteers. Steve was very mechanical and was always fixing friend’s cars, including mine, and telling them how to make their solo and race cars faster. At that time he worked for Papillion Foreign Motors in Papillion, NE. If you sign up soon with Kaley Zundel ( k z u n d e l @ s a e . o r g ) or Linda Duncan ([email protected]) you will receive a registration packet with an FSAE T-shirt, schedule of events, etc... The earlier you sign up the easier it will be for Kaley and SAE to plan well for all of the volunteers. continued on page 9 continued on page 3 N E B R A S K A R E G I O N - E X H A U S T NO T E S PA G E 1 2013 NRSCCA Board of Governors: Patt [email protected] 402-391-0120 Matthew [email protected] 402-680-6180 Dave [email protected] 402-753-0448 Get In The Loop! Jumping into the driver’s seat is his son-in-law, Tim Walter. Tim has been a member of the club since 2006 and is back on course to start a new season of autocrossing. Patricia L. CELEBRATION OF LIFE to be held at a later date. For information call: Jay Baker: 402-660-8116 A Bit Of History: -Tell us what you autocross and a little bit about your co-driver? I am enjoying auto-crossing right now in a 2006 Vette within the SS class. I have auto-crossed a 2006 Mustang and want to try auto-crossing the 2012 Subaru STI at some point, and perhaps a foray into CP someday when life allows. As to my co-driver, I think everyone is all too familiar with my car’s owner. Jerry has certainly left his mark on the SCCA in his 40 years with the club and most of you know more than enough stories without me adding to the pile. Given the fact that he holds the keys to the Vette (and the STI), I think that is where I am going to stop talking. I’m just thankful for the opportunity to get to go out and play. -How did you first get introduced to autocrossing? This car was an SSA car in the 1970’s, raced by Billie Erxleben. Then owned by Patt Buell, now owned by Barry Bean, retired State Patrol. N E B R A S K A R E G I O N - E X H A U S T NO T E S I first got into autocross through my wife April. E X H A U S T NO T E S PA G E 6 (Leonard and Bonnie Janke are Snow Birds) Traveling Arizona to California Last Winter by Bonnie Janke Patt, Will start with a picture Joe Mayer sent to us with his airplane. After we spoke to you about Kathryn Buchanon, Leonard called Joe. We had about a week left of our stay in California. Joe thought he would fly to Phoenix and then could see Bucky too. Then the weather got bad for flying, by this time we were in Arizona. Made plans to meet Joe at Chandler Airport, when we got an e-mail from him that he needed to put new seals in gas tank of his airplane, had to order seals, so another week. We went out for dinner with Bucky, the talk was will we know him (Joe)? It’s been so many years - Bucky said “tell him to wear a pink cactus in his lapel so we can find him.” We told Joe that, so he sent pictures and said “no pink Cactus.” Then we talked to son, Harold, and he told us Frank Safranek would be at his last day of driver’s school the next day. So the next A.M. we are off to Bondurant’s. Found Frank and Chris right away, they were really surprised. Frank was just being fitted with the formula car, and then was to go out to practice. It was the easiest crew job ever. The Bondurant instructor took care of his every wish. We watched the sessions until lunch break. Watch out for Frank this summer, now that he knows the tricks. We really enjoyed our time with them. Off Track story . . . continued events despite never putting in much seat time for herself. If not for her willingness to help take care of our son and soon to be daughter, I would not be able to make it out now and I know she would like to get more involved again. So a big shout out to her. -What are your favorite non-SCCA ac t i vi t i es ? Outside the SCCA, family and school tend to trump all, but if time is allowed I have been learning to play guitar for a couple years now off and on. I like to go camping a lot, both modern and primitive. Modern being tents and sleeping bags, propane stoves, etc., primitive being a canteen, knife, and flint. -Dream car garage. What is in it? 1967 Shelby with the 427, wet bar with a built in tap, a solid stereo system, and nothing else non-car related. Camping gear? Put it in the shed. Boxes of baby clothes? Donate them. Carpentry tools? Build an add-on or lose the hobby. There will be one more car as well, but Dylan and I have yet to discuss what it will be. Tim anxiously awaits the day when he can watch yet another family member cross the finish lights. His son Dylan will be turning 5 next year, that magical age to start junior karts. And there’s no doubt that he will have himself quite a cheering section. As Tim stated, “I am sure it will be exciting for the whole family to see him get out there and compete”. Speaking from the voice of experience, there is nothing more exciting ……..… until the day comes when your children start beating you Due to the death of a very good friend of ours, we had to leave Arizona for home, so did not get together with Joe. He is thinking of coming to Nebraska this summer, so hope to get together. While a member of NRSCCA, he was Solo Chairman in 1980 and in 100% Club. He started racing a 1979 Silver RX7, SSA and was Regional Competition Driver and also the winner of Nebraska Region’s prestigious award, the Woody Dunn. He was on the Nebraska Region Board of Governors, Activities Director in 1981 and 1982. And was Competition Director in 1986 through 1991. Steve was a valuable member and contributed greatly to our region. Steve went to Drivers School and became a licensed d r v e r . The SCCA made the decision to replace the original Renault drivetrain with a 1.9-liter engine and fivespeed transmission manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. This change gave the SRF an additional 10 horsepower. Ford Motor Company started to provide a new drivetrain in 1994 and the cars with the Ford powertrain renamed “Spec Racer Ford (SRF).” In 2005 he moved his race car building business, Midwest Spec Racer Shop, to Topeka. Most of the cars at Heartland Park were part of a fleet maintained by Steve. He was in the Spec Racer business for 20 years, first as a hobby and then full-time. He ran his first S p o r t s Renault at a Solo. He let me drive it. What fun! Steve Fenske, started his Midwest Sports Racing business in Nebraska in the mid-1980s. Later he moved to Osage City, KS in 1992. At that time he changed the name to Midwest Spec Racer. According to Wikipedia, Spec Racer was first conceived as low-cost sports racing class by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), in the early 1980s. Patc Henry told me, “Gary Quast and Steve’s company w a s appointed as Customer S e r v i c e Representatives for the Sports Renault program in late 1984 early 1985.” N E B R A S K A R E G I O N - E X H A U S T NO T E S Wikipedia also stated “the car was developed and originally manufactured by Renault/Jeep Sport USA. It was introduced into SCCA Club Racing in 1984 as ‘Sports Renault’.” After Renault bowed out of the program in 1989, and the car was renamed, ‘Spec Racer’ (SR).” “The bulk of his business is maintaining the vehicles and transporting them to a race so they are ready to go when the car’s owner shows up. The practice is called ‘Arrive and Drive’ and it is common on both the amateur and pro Spec Racer circuit.” “Never satisfied with a race car that was ‘good enough’, he designed and built his own prototype race car from the ground up and named it the Fenske G2.” He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Alissa and Kendall Smith of Shawnee, Kansas; Sherry (Akers) Fenske of Ross, Iowa; mother Arlene Fenske-Koons; brother Craig Fenske of Las Cruces, New Mexico; sister Dona Nixon of Yahatz, Oregon; nieces and nephews; and too many friends to list in this obituary. Steve was preceded by his father, David Fenske and his beloved “Bro” Rufus.
