“Fun Days” is the cheapest and easiest way to get on a track, no instructors in car with you, you can
take a passenger, and you get a lot of seat time. Alternating 25-min sessions of experienced and novice from 10 am to 4 pm for $130. But it’s a bumpy course.

Want to go beyond a Track Day and get involved with some entry-level racing with little money, NO
experience and a LOT of fun? Check out the Chump Car World Series or 24 Hours of LeMons. Go
watch one for the laughs, or prepare your own “$500” car, or get in touch with an existing “team” to
buy a seat in their driver rotation during these multi-hour (12-25 hours) enduro events.
Chump Car will be at VIR, Nelson Ledges and Beaver Run in 2012.
24 hours of LeMons has only one 2012 event nearby: June 16-17 at Summit Point.

A big thanks to Jack Sampson for providing several copies of RM, circa 1998-2000.
Historical? Eh. Interesting? Yes.
About 1.5 decades ago, Bill Gammon’s tenure as RM chief was succeeded by Jack,
along with Jon Cox serving as editor-at-large. Pages from those issues will be shown in
this section for months to come.
Thank you Jack!

What time is it?
Back in the “olden days” we used to judge the passage of time by the position of Mickey’s
hands, or the sand through the glass. For shorter intervals, more precision than Mickey’s fat index
finger was desired and stop watches got invented. Then concern for the speed of the watch operator
(reaction time) caused impartial start-stop devices to come into use (run over the hose, break the light
beam, etc.). Coupling all this with digital electronics enabled precise interval time measurement
displayed in digits (but only 5mm high) and then subject to human mis-reading and erroneous
recording. Solution: input all to a laptop computer for error-free recording. Tiny digits? How about a
nice, big (200mm) digital display, so all can read the time recorded and stay out of the way of the
scribe.
Expensive? You bet. But we get all those $15 and $20 entry fees and lots of sponsorship cash
from big events; so do it. Southern West Virginia Region did it, completing the whole works in ’98; so
we could know what time it is.
What did we know at Last Chance? We know that the computer was nowhere, ditto the big,
yellow digits, the lights for start-stop didn’t work (well, 2 out of 3, we used to have 4 of ‘em), the start of
timing may have had some correlation with the car start, maybe not. Results were announced to the
milli-second. Anybody know what time it is?
The restrictive finish at Last Chance revealed a timing curiosity. Some cars came to a stop still
in the beam of the timing light; but the timer didn’t stop! Only when the car cleared the light beam did
timing cease. Time is stopped by the rear of the car. (I’ve heard of winning by a nose, but not by a tail.)
Start is the same way, when it works. All these years we have carefully lined up the front of the car
before the start when it’s the back that matters.
In todays world almost nothing is maintenance-free, and autocross timing equipment is not an
exception. Perhaps some maintenance would help us know what time it is.

DEC 1998
The Last Chance Autocross
By Fred Griffin
Sunday, November 15, 1998, was the last chance to kill pylons, the last chance to drive sideways
in public, the last chance to be fast on the lot at the Tri-State Greyhound Park in 1998. It was the last
chance to earn points for the class championships, too.
Organizer Jack Sampson elected not to follow the minimalist tradition of the late Jay Coleman, the
first and for many years the Last Chance organizer. Jay was an advocate of courses with maximum
opportunity for goofy driving with minimum number of pylons to plot a restrictive course not to everyone’s
liking. One wag was heard to say that an aerial view would show the pylons arranged to spell out “Neon”.
The always competitive Neons did well, with Jack himself posting fourth best time overall in
winning the D/Stock class. The popular car boasted seven entries in two classes. (See complete results
nearby) Neons were quite good at pylon killing, too, although dead pylons were not marque specific. It’s
called equal opportunity. Pylons could be run over with any kind of car. And they were.
A notable exception was Brooke Sampson, driving the family Neon. She finished third in D/Stock
out of six cars and no pylons on any of her three runs. Jack claims her skill is hereditary. He managed
only one clean run. Hmmmm.
Most class championships had been decided by the October autocross, but four were undecided:
F/Stock, E/Stock, A/Stock and A/Prepared. All were decided at the “Last Chance” by gaining sufficient
entries to qualify for year-end awards. Year-end winners are Ed Combs in F/Stock, brand new mother
Kelly Reed in E/Stock, John Matheny in A/Prepared and Fred Griffin (2nd at “Last Chance”) in A/Stock.
First overall at “Last Chance” was Sean Halloran, driving his Formula Firebird Pontiac to a best
time of 72.090 seconds, also winning E/Street Prepared. Close behind in second overall was Mike
Dudley in his Porsche 914/6 with 72.812 to win A/Street Prepared on his third run. On his first two runs
Mike had 71’s, but caught a pylon each time. Another half-second back (winning C/Street Prepared) was
Jim Pryce at 73.295 in his Honda Del Sol.
It should be noted that fractional times are all suspect, since a “primus rusticana” method of timing
involving an irregular count-down, a waved green flag in a canopy 25 feet away from the start line, and a
manual button push with unknown reaction time to get the sand flowing. The run time was then displayed
to the thousandth of a second only after the rear of the car cleared the finish light beam. Amazing.
The good weather and the last chance to autocross in ’98 brought out 55 entries; one of the
largest of the year. As can be seen from the results, times averaged in the mid-80 seconds; so with a
delayed start, caused by the never solved timer problems, added to the big entry the last runs were
almost in the dark. Four runs had been scheduled, but after the first run it was announced that only two
more could be squeezed in.
Thanks are in order to all who worked the course (and there were many), collected the fees,
recorded results and helped out in general. And of course a big thanks to Jack for organizing the “Last
Chance”.
