Powerful Communication Skills for Supervisors
The Transition to Kindergarten
Mankind has been speaking for thousands of years, so we should
have this communication tool mastered, right? Given the number
of conflicts, arguments, and spats that occur daily everywhere
from the world stage to our workplaces and our personal lives,
apparently there is still much to learn. Join us for this eye-opening
session on how to obtain mutually beneficial results with everyone
from your newest client to some of your oldest relationships.
Starting kindergarten is a significant transition for young children
and their families. This session will help you prepare children and
families for a successful transition experience. The discussion will
surround appropriate readiness skills, creating partnerships with
your local kindergarten teachers, and working on family routines.
(Van Richmond, Vantastic Seminars, Inc.)
Tough Conversations with Families

Talking about the “tough stuff” with families is sometimes
difficult for directors…how do I share information in an
appropriate manner, how do I ask the “tough” questions and
how can I work with them as a team? Join us for this interactive
session to discuss myths and realities about families, strategies
for forming family partnerships and other topics that will
increase the likelihood that your message will be heard.
(Erin Kissling, Indiana Department of Education)

Managing Emotions in the Workplace
Taking Steps to Healthy Success
(Van Richmond, Vantastic Seminars, Inc.)
(Marta Fetterman, IACCRR)
Childcare providers can have tremendous impact on the
health and wellness of the children and families in their care.
Let’s examine what you can do within your center to support
nutrition and physical activity and increase staff engagement
and wellness. Take the first step!
Preventing Panic when the Unexpected
or Unthinkable Happens
Living lives that are fast-paced, hectic, and filled with pressure
lead people to sometimes respond emotionally when conflicting
viewpoints or objectives are present. What started as an amicable
dialogue can suddenly spin out of control, leaving a path of
destruction that can include hurt feelings, lost business, and
damaged or even severed relationships. If you are ready for tested
and proven methods on how to keep your cool when things get
hot, this is a must-attend session. Keynote address provided by
Van Richmond, Chief Excitement Officer, Vantastic Seminars, Inc.
(Pat Cole, Independent Early Childhood
Health and Safety Consultant)
Join in the discussion about the important emergency policies
and procedures you need to keep children, staff and you safe in
the event of a weather emergency, injury of you or a child or staff,
threat of violence, fire or other emergency. Learn about all the parties that need to know your procedures and discuss ways to keep
plans current. A resource guide will be provided at the session.

Session 2
2:00 – 3:15 p.m.
Overview of Adult Learning Principles: Strategies
for making the most of staff meetings and trainings
I Have to Pay Them for What?
Wage Laws and How They Impact You.
In this session, participants will become familiar with basic adult
learning principles. Participants will develop an understanding of
learning styles, including their own style, so that when planning staff
meetings and trainings, activities and strategies can be implemented
to encompass all learning styles.
Being aware of laws concerning wages and time management
are important to your business. Join this session to hear what
you need to know to be in compliance with labor laws.
(Traci Marshall, IACCRR)
Getting Ahead with Grant Writing: Discovering
Opportunities and Developing the Confidence to Apply
(Julie Whitman, Indiana Youth Institute)
Grants can be a great way to secure funding for your valuable
programs and services, but they aren’t always easy to obtain. You’ll
learn how to ensure your organization is grant-ready, as well as how
to make your case to potential funders. We’ll discuss funding sources
and places to look for prospects, as well as tips for writing a successful
proposal. And you’ll leave knowing how IYI can help, no matter where
you are in your grant writing journey.
Session 3
(Esthella Andrade, US Department of Labor,
Wage and Hour Division)
Ask “The State”
(Lisa Clifford and Linda Kolbus,
Office of Early Childhood and Out of School Learning)
Join this session to get answers to all your questions regarding
CCDF laws and licensing questions directly from the staff of the
Office of Early Childhood and Out of School Learning.
How to Handle Conflict and Confrontation
(Van Richmond, Vantastic Seminars Inc.)
Conflict and confrontation are about as welcome in a workplace
as a skunk at your family reunion picnic: they cause people to
scatter, and the stink might last for a really, really long time. While
a mostly negative perception precedes conflict or confrontation,
the reality is there is much to be gained when these challenges
are handled properly. Preparation, planning, and practice are
keys that will enable you to handle potentially difficult situations
with greater comfort and increased confidence.
3:30 – 5:00 p.m.
The Director’s Dance
(Angielena Williams, Rainbow Child Care Center)
Join me as we discover a variety of “steps” that help to create the
“Director’s Dance”. Together we will explore self-reflection, learning
and management styles, along with other areas of a Director’s day-today operational concerns.
Parent Involvement vs Family Engagement:
Moving from “Doing to” to “Doing with”
(Anita Allison, IACCRR)
After decades of using the term parent involvement, educators
and researchers have shifted to using the term parent or family
engagement to represent active partnership and shared responsibility
between parents and educators. Participants attending this session
will examine the differences between involvement and engagement
and explore what it takes to shift perspectives to more fully engage
families in their children’s education. Participants will also be
introduced to strategies and resources that will assist them in
enhancing the quality of family engagement practices.
Building the Village:Reaching beyond
your doors to improve outcomes
(Christy Prulhiere, IACCRR)
How do you begin to build community collaboration so all
the needs of the children in your program are being met? We
will discuss the who, the what, the how and the why of strong
community collaborations so you can begin building your village.
Primary Caregiving: The Importance of Relationships with Infants,
Toddlers, and their Families
(Lisa Henley, IACCRR)
Primary caregiving is more than just names on a wall. High
quality infant and toddler care is one based on the depth of
the relationship between the program staff, children in care
and their families. During this session, we will discuss the
functions of attachment, outline the key roles of a primary
caregiver, and how to set up the primary caregiving system.
