The 18-hole course is one of the top five most popular golf courses in the Auckland area with the gently rolling 6,033-metre par-72 championship layout providing a balance of challenge, enjoyment and ease to golfers of all levels and abilities. The layout offers players a different challenge on every hole, with the front nine having to be played with finesse while the back nine allows players to open their shoulders when playing the challenging par-5s. There is a vibrant feel to the Club which offers a full golfing calendar enjoyed by all ages, with young players made to feel particularly welcome with an active coaching and development programme. Despite worldwide trends, the Club’s membership continues to grow due to flexible playing categories and subscription packages to suit all ages and golfing prowess. The Pakuranga Golf Club hosts corporate and charity golf days, with the catering and function facilities being ideal for weddings, conferences, meetings, dinners, special occasions and events. The Greenside Lounge & Bar offers stunning views over the putting green, 18th hole or practice fairway, creating a feeling of freedom and space to enjoy all season dining, whether it be a refreshing ale with light snacks in summer or a bowl of hearty homemade soup or latte in the winter months. Whether you are a visitor, new member or long standing supporter, the Pakuranga Golf Club looks forward to welcoming you soon to enjoy a quality golfing experience or social gathering in a friendly, convivial environment. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 5 6 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z A Brief History Prior to 1969 the land which our golf course occupies was farmed. In 1969 three entrepreneurs established the Cascades Golf Company and negotiated a five-year lease with the farm owner. The lease included the option to purchase the land. Cascades Golf Company intended to develop a Country Club similar to those popular in America. Membership was available through an entry fee of $25. A round of golf cost Members 60 cents. The course was developed with most holes lying in a north/south direction, rather than the east/west layout of today. After 12 months’ experience, Cascades discovered that “user pays” does not always pay. A general meeting of Members was called, a committee elected, the property was sub-leased by Cascades Members and the Pakuranga Country Club was established. Course improvements have included planting decorative trees and shrubs, giving better definition to the shaping of fairways, establishing bunkers and redeveloping green and tees. By 1997, membership had grown to the mid-1,200s, putting the Club at third equal of all 18-hole courses in New Zealand. Pressure on the Clubhouse capacity was showing. A Clubhouse extension and renovation was needed and construction commenced in September 1998. During May 1974 Cascades exercised its option to purchase the property and sold it to Pakuranga Country Club for a fair market value at the time. April 1999 saw the Club celebrate its 30th birthday year with the opening of the expanded Clubhouse. These facilities are a fine asset for Members and the local community and position the Club well for the future. During the 10 years following 1974, development of the course evolved in line with the design and tree-planting plan prepared by Mr Jack Eccles. The original farmhouse served as a congenial – but inadequate – Clubhouse. A building programme was started. To date 15 of the 20 greens have been converted to sand greens in accordance with USGA standards. Various new tees have been built to incorporate a Championship, Club and Ladies’ course. This work has been designed by leading course architect, Chris Pitman. Responding to a scheme to raise finance, 300 Members subscribed to the Participating Membership Scheme adopted at a special general meeting. This was 1978, and finances now permitted work to begin on a new Clubhouse. It was opened in February 1979. During 2006 the Club built and funded a new greenkeeper’s complex incorporating equipment storage and up to the mark chemical storage and application facilities. The Club continued to evolve, its course development and membership grew and its financial structure strengthened. A major redevelopment project was completed during 2009 encompassing a new 13th green and approach following the Pitman design and constructed by Barclay Contracting Ltd. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 7 8 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z Course & Practice Facilities Pakuranga Golf Club’s 18-hole championship layout is generally regarded as one of the top and most popular courses in Auckland. It stretches to 6,033 metres off the Blue championship tees, playing to a par of 72. There are tees to suit all abilities, with the Men’s and Ladies’ White Course measuring 5,727 metres and the Yellow Course an easywalking 5,072 metres. After an opening par 5, the front nine contains a variety of testing par-4s and two forgiving short par 3 holes. If you arrive at the turn with a good score, beware the 10th, which is the hardest rated hole on the scorecard if playing off the Blue or Yellow tees and the third toughest hole if playing off the White tees. A relatively forgiving four-hole stretch between holes 13 and 16 of three par-5s and the uphill par-3 15th give a chance to redeem wrongs done earlier in the round before tackling two difficult par-4s to finish the round. The picturesque tree-lined course is a delight to play and it is easy to forget on occasion in this green oasis that you are so close to the city. The Club has a practice area that is 350 metres long, but limited to short and medium irons due to the main arterial road running along to its right. Members and green fee-payers can use the range on the day and balls are available. At the northern end is a chipping and pitching area, while right in front of the Clubhouse is a large and inviting practice green that sees good use, especially by the Club’s promising youngsters. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 9 Tour the Course Here are a few useful tips and course notes which should help you make the most of your round on the Pakuranga Golf Course, particularly if you have never played here before. Distances shown are from the men’s tees. 1 0 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z Hole 1 - 477 metres, par 5 Out of bounds down the left side of fairway. A precise approach shot is required to an elevated green which slopes away from the fairway and has two bunkers front right. If the flag is in the bottom section of the green then it is wise to play for the centre. Hole 2 - 311 metres, par 4 A sweeping dog-leg right around the poplar tree that is clearly visible from the elevated tee. The green has two bunkers right front and one bunker front left. The green slopes from right to left, so aim to the right of the pin with the approach shot. Hole 3 - 358 metres, par 4 Sharp dog-leg left and unless you are a big hitter it is foolish to cut the corner. When the pin is in the bottom half of the green, leave your approach below the flag. Hole 4 - 367 metres, par 4 Aim your drive down the left side of the fairway as anything right of centre will run off further right. Take note of the pin placement on the large green as it can mean up to two clubs’ difference with the approach. Hole 5 - 294 metres, par 4 Short par 4 with fairway bunkers on either side. The real difficulty lies with the approach which needs to be precise as the green has bunkers front right and back with the green sloping away to the left. Trouble awaits those who go long. Hole 6 - 101 metres, par 3 Short par 3 which is rated the easiest hole on the course. Be happy with the centre of the green when the pin is on the left side. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 1 1 Hole 7 - 353 metres, par 4 This hole usually plays directly into the predominant south-westerly wind. A drive to the left of centre gives the best angle for the approach. The green is protected by bunkers on both sides and take care when reading the line of putts as there are some subtle breaks. Hole 8 - 168 metres, par 3 Hole 10 - 369 metres, par 4 Club selection is important if you cannot hit your tee-shot straight as the fairway narrows the further down you go. A lofted approach is required as bunkers either side leave only a narrow gap if attempting to run the ball into the green. The putting surface is long, with some subtle breaks. Straight forward par 3 to a smallish green. There are bunkers front left and centre right. It is better to be a little long than short as the green slopes toward the front and the ball can roll back off the green if too close to the front edge. Hole 11 - 195 metres, par 3 Hole 9 - 406 metres, par 4 Hole 12 - 351 metres, par 4 Long par 4 for men and solid par 5 for women. The fairway is tree-lined but is wider than it appears from the tee. The green is flat and when the pin is at the back it can appear closer than it is, resulting in many approach shots coming up short. 1 2 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z A solid tee shot is required to carry all the way to the large green, which slopes away towards the right. A very challenging par 3 from the men’s blue tee when a strong south-westerly wind is blowing. Not a favourite hole for slicers with out of bounds and tree trouble down the right side of the fairway plus a fairway bunker. There is a further bunker in the centre of the fairway, 50 metres from green. The approach shot into the narrow green entrance should be slightly right of the pin as the green slopes right to left. Beware, though, the bunker on the right between the green and out of bounds. Hole 13 - 455 metres, par 5 The second par-5 on the course. Your second shot should be left of centre to avoid a blind landing area with two fairway bunkers on the right. The green is wide but is quite short and club selection is key as the split-level green can leave some tough putts. It is often wise to play for the right side of the putting surface to take the two left-hand front bunkers out of play. Hole 16 - 480 metres, par 5 Par 5 dog-leg right for men and slight dog-leg left par 4 for women. A precise lofted approach shot is required to the narrow green. Don’t be short when the pin is on the right as the ball will roll back off the putting surface. The pot bunker front right is also to be avoided. Hole 17 - 363 metres, par 4 Straight forward shorter par 5 that offers a chance of birdie. The approach shot can be deceptive as there is more ground than appears between the front bunkers and the narrow green. A drive right of centre gives the best approach and avoids the fairway bunker on the left. There are two bunkers to the right of the green, but distance control is just as important as accuracy, with an approach shot to the correct level leaving a far easier first putt on the twotiered sloping green. Hole 15 - 140 metres, par 3 Hole 18 - 390 metres, par 4 Hole 14 - 426 metres, par 5 Take one club more than the yardage suggests as this short hole usually plays directly into the wind. Do not be short, as any ball under-hit will often roll back to the bottom of the gully. There are two bunkers to the right of the green and one at the back. A testing hole to finish, with the tee shot having to find a narrow landing area between trees on the left and the fairway bunker on the right. There is some ‘dead’ ground in front of a flat green so measure closely from the distance markers. There are no bunkers to fear, but the mounding around the green can test the short game skills of those who miss the putting surface. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 1 3 Looking after you, your family and your business Personalised Financial Solutions Investment • Insurance • Superannuation Health Insurance • KiwiSaver Authorised Financial Advisers www.curreyfinancial.co.nz T 09 525 7022 F 09 525 7024 E [email protected] 1 4 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z Professional Team & Pro Shop Pakuranga Golf Club’s Pro Shop is the place to go to take care of all your golfing needs. The Club can offer inter-club matches for men, women and juniors, together with a host of honour board competitions and more relaxed social golfing events. The clubs in this part of the world cannot get enough of their team golf and they are very well provided for by Auckland Golf, which every year organises a host of events for players of all abilities. Pakuranga Golf Club fields teams in several men’s divisions and while it has never taken out the top division prize, the Bissett Shield, it has claimed the President’s Cup on numerous occasions. All matches in each division are played at a single different host club on a round-robin basis between February and April, giving the opportunity to enjoy some of the area’s other outstanding courses. The three best performing teams in each division qualify for the play-offs and ultimately the chance to play for the Pennant. The team picking up most points in their division goes straight through to the Grand Final, with second and third battling it out in a semi-final for the right to join them. If you are out of the running for the major prize there is still plenty to play for with promotion and relegation between the divisions. Pennant golf to a club golfer is something very special and the closest many will ever get to experiencing pressure in a sporting contest especially where one missed putt or sliced drive out of bounds can mean the difference between overall victory and defeat. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 2 3 Pakuranga Mt Eden At Davis, we believe in delivering the funeral experience that truly reflects your family’s wishes. However there is still the chance for golfers of all abilities to enjoy the thrill of team play, with Auckland Golf also running an Inter Club competition with a format very similar to Pennants, but based on handicap matchplay. The Ladies are as keen about their competitive golf as the men and enter five teams in various team events. The premier competition is the Betty Faesen Challenge Shield which features four-a-side singles matchplay, played off the stick. Again, there are also competitions for all abilities, with the A and B Pennants for golfers with a handicap of 18 or under and 19 and above respectively. These matches feature a President’s Cup-style format with three foursomes in the morning followed by six singles in the afternoon. For the even higher-handicappers there are midweek and weekend 18-hole matchplay team events played off handicap, which offer competitive playing opportunities. Pakuranga Golf Club has experienced its fair share of glory in team golf, though the success in 2011 will be hard to replicate, by any Club. That season Pakuranga Golf Club was crowned both the men’s and women’s Champion of Champions, one of the most prestigious team prizes on offer in the region and involving leading players from all 18 Auckland clubs. In addition to the regular weekly competitions at the Club there are a host of honour board competitions and trophies to be claimed. With medal and matchplay events, one-day competitions and knock-outs running throughout the season, and events for single players and pairs (fourball and foursomes), the programme is varied with something to appeal to everyone. There are separate sections for weekday and full-playing men and women with separate prizes. The Club hosts matchplay and strokeplay championships over five divisions for the men and three sections for the women. Even when everyone plays together it’s not always the best players who take out the prizes because of golf’s wonderful handicap system. Everybody can have their day in the sun, and it’s the reason why many of us keep playing the game! Nine-hole golf is becoming increasingly popular and is perfect for those with busy lifestyles and limited time available, but still need their regular golfing fix. It’s the modern-day golf equivalent of Twenty20 cricket and for those obsessed by productivity it allows you to cram so much more into the day! The ladies’ nine-hole section has grown substantially and is one of the recent success stories at Pakuranga Golf Club. The Section has their own tee-times set aside on Tuesdays and Thursdays and play in dedicated nine-hole competitions. Each child is taught the basics, so they have the foundations in place to be able to go on and enjoy a lifetime’s good golf. As the child’s confidence and ability grows, they progress through a series of groups to finally go out and enjoy play on the course. The primary goal of all coaching sessions is fun and enjoyment. However most golfers will tell you that the game is so much more enjoyable if you play it well and our young players are all encouraged to become as good a player as they are able. Each year several teams are fielded in Auckland Golf’s Junior Pennant competition, which provides young golfers with the opportunity to test their skills and learn matchplay competition in an environment that is fun and supportive. It gives the youngsters valuable experience of competitive golf and is a perfect stepping stone to the adult’s pennant teams. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 3 1 3 2 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z The Choice of Champions Pakuranga Golf Club is proud to have associations with some of New Zealand’s most promising players and to have played a part in their development. Cecilia Cho joined Pakuranga Golf Club when she first came to New Zealand from Korea. Cecilia was a golf fanatic and her natural talent, incredible work ethic and determination to improve her game, proved to be an unbeatable combination. At 14 she won the 2009 New Zealand amateur championship at Titirangi and successfully defended her title the following year at Bridge Pa in Hastings, the first golfer to do so since Australian Lorraine Lambert in 1991-1992. She went on to amass a phenomenal 15 titles in 2009 and two years later became the world’s No.1-ranked amateur woman golfer. Cecilia was the first woman from New Zealand to hold that mantle. Cecilia represented Pakuranga Golf Club, Auckland and New Zealand during her time as an amateur, before turning professional in 2012. Although now likely to spend much of her time back in her native Korea, we will watch her career develop with interest. Cecilia’s emergence, however, has not been an isolated event. Sisters and good friends Munchin Keh and Wenyung Keh also learnt their golf at Pakuranga Golf Club and still enjoy coaching and practice at the Club. In 2012 they became the first siblings in the 119-year history of the New Zealand Amateur Championship, to meet in the final. For the record, the elder sister Munchin prevailed on the final hole of an epic 36-hole showdown at Mount Maunganui Golf Club. These girls have been tremendous ambassadors for the Club whilst representing New Zealand over this time. The talented young sportswomen have also been an inspiration to the Club’s growing band of up and coming junior golfers who one day dream they might enjoy similar success. Incidentally, another Keh sister, Siyi, is also showing great promise and her handicap has reduced dramatically in recent years. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 3 3 3 4 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z Visitors Pakuranga Golf Club welcomes visitors to play the 18-hole championship golf course. If you respect this and standard golfing etiquette such as maintaining a good pace of play you will always be most welcome. Special rates are offered to Members’ guests and to affiliated members of the New Zealand Golf Association. Phone (09) 538 0672 to inquire about tee-time availability and to book your slot. Alternatively you can book online through the “Find a Club” section of the home page of New Zealand Golf website, www.golf.co.nz If you are visiting Auckland on business or pleasure, sets of clubs can hired from the Pro Shop, as can golf carts and trundlers. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 3 5 3 6 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z Clubhouse & Catering You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the Clubhouse facilities, and you will always be sure of a warm and friendly welcome in our spacious Greenside Lounge & Bar. Astute business leaders have long recognised the advantages of hosting these popular events. There is a two-way benefit attached to corporate golf days. It’s a great thrill for clients, friends or colleagues to receive an invitation. But equally, the host is thanking his clients for their support in addition to wanting to make a good impression. Corporate Golf Days provide the opportunity to mix business with pleasure with the chance to have a good time, meet new contacts and make new friends. Win a prize or two and the day suddenly becomes even more memorable. At Pakuranga Golf Club, we have the expertise, experience and resources to make your event a success. From planning to execution, you can relax and enjoy your day as much as your guests secure in the knowledge that all the behind-the-scenes details are being handled in a professional manner. Instead of having your key staff organise the event, which in turn is unproductive for your business, simply nominate one of your staff to liaise with us and we’ll do all the work for you. The golf will be great and the food will too. Any combination you desire of breakfast, a light sandwich luncheon, buffet lunch or dinner, two or three-course lunch or dinner and cocktail or finger food can be made available. The Pro Shop is fully stocked with the latest and best in golf accessories and apparel, as well as hire equipment. Arrangements can also be made to supply a selection of goods for prizes and trophies. The friendly professional team can provide you with nearest the pin and longest drive markers should they be required and would be delighted to offer golfing tuition or to put on group golfing clinics before play. Start sheets with names of participants will be ready for player registration at least one hour prior to the first teeoff time. Sponsor’s signage, display stands and stalls, including show vehicles, can be placed around the golf course. For optimum visual impact (and safety reasons) we have predetermined placement positions for signs and displays on each hole and positions around the Clubhouse. Enjoy your round, then it’s back to the Clubhouse for the post-golf presentations and a chance to end the day in the perfect way with a relaxing drink and some fine food. Some social events - such as the occasional quiz night - are organised throughout the year, with the mid-winter Christmas dinner being particularly well attended. Members though are golf fanatics, so it will be little surprise to learn that most of the social time they spend at the Club revolves around the game they love. Masters Monday in April, for instance, is turning into a big event at Pakuranga Golf Club. Members gather early in the morning to watch the final day action at Augusta National before a field of up to 144 golfers go out and try to emulate their golfing heroes. The Club’s own Green Jacket is awarded to the winner on the day and there is also a prize table. All that’s missing is the emotional winning speech from Bubba Watson! The Club hosts an annual fundraising golf day which is a mixed event. Members seek prizes to donate and there is a huge auction afterwards in the Clubhouse. The money raised is substantial and helps fund special Club projects. A very popular part of Club life on Wednesday evenings during Daylight Saving is Twilight Golf, which feature a social game of nine holes followed by a relaxed drink and a buffet meal in the Clubhouse. Fields for these events normally top the hundred mark and it is here that you really get to experience the true camaraderie and friendly atmosphere that being a member of Pakuranga Golf Club is all about. Pakuranga Golf Club is a forward-thinking Club always keen to embrace ideas that might grow the game and therefore were delighted to be chosen as the pilot club in east Auckland to host a new event called Cheeky9. Aimed at young golfers, the concept was to create a new, exciting golf league allowing sportspeople to squeeze in nine holes with friends midweek. There are estimated to be around 350,000 golfers who play casually but are not members of clubs and this was an ideal opportunity to showcase the attractions of Pakuranga. The new two-hour game also aims to draw in younger generations to our traditional sport, while keeping their weekends free (providing they don’t get hooked, of course!) Cheeky9 was a great success and it is hoped that it will become a regular event in both the Club’s and the Auckland golfing calendar. w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z | 4 7 4 8 | w w w. p a k u r a n g a g o l f c l u b . c o . n z How to Find Us Pakuranga Golf Club is located between Howick and Botany in Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs, approximately 20 minutes from the city centre and airport and 10 minutes from Eastern Beach, Bucklands Beach and Half Moon Bay.
