Dear Friends,
One of my colleagues, Rabbi Jamie Korngold
(better known by her sobriquet, The Adventure Rabbi) asks the question: why do so
many of the most important moments in the
history of the Jewish people happen in the
wilderness? The binding of Isaac. Jacob’s
ladder. Moses and the burning bush. The
giving of the Torah. Actually, I would phrase
the question a little differently: why do so
many of our peoples’ encounters with God
take place out in nature, rather than in cities,
towns, or villages?
It certainly isn’t because we believe that God
is not present in our own communities.
Indeed, we are at great pains to insist that
God is everywhere. So why does it seem
that, historically at least, God only speaks to
folks out in the wilderness? What is different
about God out there in nature, in the deserts
or the forests? I would suggest that what’s
different is not God, but rather ourselves.
I truly do believe that God is available
everywhere. I believe that there are signs of
God’s presence in everyday life. I just think
that it’s much harder for us to see or hear
them, to even notice them, surrounded by
the distractions and the background noise of
our day-to-day routines. I’m sure that if
Moses had come upon the burning bush
while hurrying to his next appointment in
downtown Cairo he would have walked right
past it! Out in the wilderness, accompanied
only by a few sheep, he was able to notice
the miracle. Perhaps this is true of all of us.
Perhaps we’ve all missed a few burning
bushes in our lives. There are just so many
distractions.
And yet many people say that they feel most
“spiritual” out in the forest or on top of a
mountain or camping in a desert. Somehow
being out in nature quiets the static and the
background noise. Our receptors may not be
as finely tuned as Moses’, but still, this is
where so many find it easier to truly feel that
there is something greater than themselves at
work in the world.
In order to take advantage of this, this past
year a few of us have been enjoying periodic
spiritual walks in the wilderness. Part gentle
hike, part discussion, part meditation, I have
been surprised at how profoundly moving
these 90-minute excursions have been for all
of us. On September 28, the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we
will hold our next walk, with a focus on
teshuvah. It’s open to all and I would
especially encourage you to attend if you are
one of those who struggle to find meaning in
the prayerbook, or who find it hard to find
God in the sanctuary. It promises to be a
beautiful addition to our High Holy Day
season.

Shalom! One of my favorite
musicals is “Dreamgirls” and I love
the refrain from the song “Family”:
We are a family like a giant tree branching out of the sky
We are a family, we are so much more than just you and I
We are a family like a giant tree
Growing stronger, growing wiser, we are growing free
We need you, we are a family
In Jewish thought, the tree is symbolic of the Torah and of the future. We call the
Torah, etz chayim, the tree of life as it holds the stories, values, and laws we need to
understand in order to live our lives. The following story about an old man planting
a carob tree is attributed to Honi ha-M’agel, Honi the Circle Maker. Honi knew that
the man would not live long enough to eat the fruit of the tree and asked why the
old man would bother. The man replied “When I was born into this world, I found
many carob trees planted by my father and grandfather. Just as they planted trees
for me, I am planting trees for my children and grandchildren so they will be able to
eat the fruit of these trees.” I consider TBA to be a family and love the image of us
being a tree that is reaching to the sky, growing stronger, growing wiser and
building a future. As the song says, “We are so much more than just you and I,”
and yet we wouldn’t exist without you.
Former members of TBA often join us for services to observe a yahrtzeit or for a
lifecycle event of friends, and I happily greet them with a heartfelt “welcome
home.” I say “welcome home” because I believe that once you are a member of
TBA you are part of the family for life. Recently I received an email from a family
informing me that they will be returning to TBA as members; and, in part, it is
because of this greeting. They had joined us at services for a lifecycle event and
were struck by my words and how they have always felt at home at TBA and have
not found that feeling at the synagogue they currently belong to. They feel a part
of the family. People leave TBA for all sorts of reasons; I hope that they know that if
they want to return, we are here waiting with our doors wide open.
I would like to say “welcome home” to all of you too! I hope that you have
enjoyed your summer and that you will be returning home to TBA for the Holy Days
and another year filled with worship, lifecycle events, adult education, Religious
School, social events, friends, family, and a feeling that TBA is truly your home and
extended family. We are so grateful that you have chosen to belong to TBA and
look forward to celebrating, remembering, learning, and worshiping with you. We
have spent the summer planning events that we think you will enjoy and would love
to hear from you about what you might be looking for at TBA in the future.
From my family to yours, Barry, Tamir and I would like to wish you a shanah tova
u’mitukah, a good and sweet New Year. May it be filled with health and happiness.

And Other Things to Consider
It is true I don’t remember all of my teachers but I do remember some very specific
ones. Those teachers who changed me, changed my life, those are the ones I
remember. I became a rabbi because it is my vocation. It chose me first and then
when I was ready, I chose it. I guess you might say that I followed my calling but in
truth that sounds too simple. You see, I was very lucky as a child. My parents, or
more aptly, my mother’s desire for her children to receive a strong Jewish education
provided me with an excellent Jewish academic education.
Along the way in my schooling, I had lots of great teachers, some brilliant and
inspiring, some more brilliant than inspiring. Then I met my Rebbe, Reb Zalman
Schachter Shlomi z”l. Reb Zalman is my Rebbe because he is the teacher at whose
feet I sat learning and literally felt my heart opening again to Judaism or perhaps
more honestly, my heart was reopening to God. Reb Zalman lit a fire that had
grown dim deep inside me. He ignited a spark that allowed my love for Judaism
and God flow. He helped me to reconnect with my inner core and be the person I
am still evolving to be.
In Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) 1:6, Rabbi Joshua teaches: “select a masterteacher for yourself; and acquire a colleague for study.” So what does this mean?
It means that at some point each of us arrives at a place where we need a masterteacher. Someone we allow in so that we can grow. And through this relationship
you find a partner in learning.
My Rebbe died on July 3, 2014, at the age of 89. I have thought more about Reb
Zalman over these past weeks since his passing. I have been appreciating the gifts
he gave me and learning of the gifts he gave to so many others. I don’t think I ever
truly understood the teaching above from Pirkei Avot until Reb Zalman’s passing.
Reb Zalman blessed me on the day I was given smicha (rabbinic ordination); he
blessed me before I became pregnant with my daughter, Sophia; he blessed me
every time I saw him. Every night when I put my girls to bed before we say the
Shema, we sing a short song calling the angels Michael, Gavriel, Raphael, and Uriel
and God’s divine presence to watch over my girls as they sleep. Each of these
nights I can see Reb Zalman’s face smiling. I first heard this prayer song sung by
Reb Zalman, and I believe that hearing my girls sing it with me now each night is a
blessing of gratitude we offer him daily.
I chose to be a Jewish teacher - a rabbi- because I want to inspire my students. I
want to share my love of Judaism with my students. Through all of my conversations with the Temple Beth Abraham-religious school (TBA-RS) faculty we share in
our hope that our students continue to build deep and lasting relationships with
us. The TBA Religious School faculty is comprised of an amazing group of talented,
gifted, and dedicated educators, individuals and spiritual nurturers. Their commitment to their students is strong and steadfast. They are truly a blessed group with

THANK YOU! Midnight Run
We had a great Run providing food and clothing to about 75 of our homeless
friends on the streets in Manhattan in July. It was a warm summer night and
we had the opportunity to hang out and chat at each stop.

Goldberg, Donna Fleming, Michelle Marshall, Victoria Ritter, Robin Forester,

if reluctantly. I now embrace my Judaism

Books of Moses in English. No previous knowledge is required and
