The quote above sounds exactly like what goes on around here when we are bringing a new plant into culture and production. We hear it all over the building: “need more cuttings, they all died” “the dang thing won’t multiply” “hey, big breakthrough, we got 10% rooting!” And my personal favorite: “what happened???? It looked great yesterday!” Edison also said “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” And so we do. We are RELENTLESS in our efforts to bring our customers new plants and to improve the quality of those they are already getting from us. We’ve got a boatload of new material in the pipeline, with more and more being added every day. The new Geraniums from Marco van Noort are becoming quite popular. We have several new selections of hazelnut from the breeding program of Dr. Shawn Mellenbacher, and many new items we are working on exclusively for specific growers. While we don’t get to shout about that “secret” stuff, it is fun to see it in trade show booths, catalogs and in the field all around the country, and the world. We are adding staff and expanding our facility, building new culture rooms upstairs to handle the additional demand. And we continue our focus on streamlining our process. Our team is enthusiastic and energetic. These are exciting times at Microplant. Thanks to our fabulous customers for their loyalty, support and friendship. And for encouraging us to keep working on attempt number 10,001. If you are planning a trip in our area, please give us a call to arrange a visit. We’d enjoy showing you around. Stage 2 Microcuttings are essentially the same size, but lacking roots. Both Rooted Plantlets and Microcuttings are ready for greenhouse planting under tented mist or other high humidity apparatus. Minimum order for Microcuttings or Rooted Plantlets is 1,000 per variety. Over the past three decades, we have had the fantastic challenge of working on a broad range of plant material, with the goal of producing large numbers of plants for the trade. In most cases, we have been forced to write the book as we go along. It is still being written! This list represents more than 50 Genera and 500 cultivars we have produced in quantity. There are at least three times as many that we have attempted and/or are currently working on. Is it job security or insanity we are after? It’s an open question often debated here. Both fun and profit are major goals. Let’s talk about your wish list. A very strong plant. Grows to 60 feet tall with a 40-foot spread. Good yellow fall color. A delightful small tree with weeping or cascading branches drooping to the ground. Our stock has been heat treated and has successfully passed through one year of negative virus indexing. It can be staked to reach 6–12 feet in height, or pruned to allow branches to tumble over ledges or rocks, creating a Japanese garden effect. Graceful branches are covered with single white blooms in spring. FLOWERING CRABAPPLES Prairiefire VI Rooted Plantlets Malus sp. ‘Prairiefire’ | Zone 4 Released from the breeding program at the University of Illinois, this selection combines beautiful purple-to-green foliage, bright pinkish-red flowers and glossy dark red bark with excellent resistance to scab, rust, mildew and Fireblight. Microplant has pioneered the commercial micropropagation of hazelnuts in an effort to help the industry move forward quickly with selections from the excellent breeding work ongoing at Oregon State University. While Microplant makes no recommendations as to which experimental cultivars are best, we have partnered with many growers here in the Willamette Valley, bulking up their selections and getting these new cultivars into the field as soon as possible. All of our hazelnut work is done on a contract basis. Please let us know how we can help you. Contorted Rooted Plantlets Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ | Zones 3–9 Also known as Harry Lander’s Walking Stick, this fabulous small (8–10 feet) tree has a twisted gnarled branch structure providing unique interest to the garden. In late winter these wacky branches are covered with pale yellow catkins. Usually this is grafted onto a seedling understock that can throw numerous straight suckers which the frustrated gardener must prune out. Ours is grown on its own roots, so we say, “let the suckers grow.” They’ll be contorted, too! Hazelnut Red Dragon/ Heather Leyrer Red Dragon Rooted Plantlets Corylus avellana ‘Red Dragon’ PP 20694 | Zones 4–5 This fantastic new contorted red-leaf hazelnut cultivar was developed by Dr. Shawn Mehlenbacher and David C. Smith at Oregon State University. Selected for its beautiful rich, dark burgundy leaves, distinct twisting stems and COMPLETE RESISTANCE TO EASTERN FILBERT BLIGHT. Unlike other cultivars, the rich dark leaf color holds throughout the hot summer months. Even the catkins and nuts are dark red! Micropropagation means the entire tree will be contorted and lends vigor in the nursery at an early age. Mature trees will reach 10–12 feet in height, with a 6–8 foot spread. Unlicensed propagation prohibited. HONEYSUCKLE Dropmore Scarlet Rooted Plantlets Lonicera x brownii ‘Dropmore Scarlet’ | Zones 4–9 A very hardy, easy to grow climbing vine that reliably produces masses of long lasting beautiful reddish-orange flowers all through the summer months. Blooms on both old and new wood. Very showy. Hummingbirds and butterflies love it. NEW! John Clayton Rooted Plantlets Lonicera sempervirens f. sulphurea 'John Clayton' Lonicera Mandarin 10 Bright yellow flowers flow from the compact blue green foliage. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. | MICROPLANT NURSERIES | 2014–2015 WHOLESALE CATALOG | microplantnurseries.com HOPS | HYDRANGEA HONEYSUCKLE NEW! Mandarin Rooted Plantlets Lonicera 'Mandarin' PP 11803 A vigorous, woody vine with dark purple-brown-pink young leaves that turn dark green when they mature. Bright reddish-orange tubular flowers with yellow insides follow soon after. HOPS Centennial, Crystal, Horizon, Newport Sterling Rooted Plantlets We are pleased to offer these five varieties of commercial hops. All are sold only as rooted plantlets, in quantities of 1,000 or more. There is considerable lead time, so please book early. HYDRANGEA Munchkin Rooted Plantlets Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Munchkin’ (NA 73936; PI 658494) | Zones 5–8 Hop Blossoms Perfectly named. Everything about this oakleaf is very strong, very small and very adorable. The smallest of the two selections released by Dr. Sandra Reed at the U.S. National Arboretum’s breeding program in McMinnville, Tennessee, Munchkin—after nine years in the field—is only 3 feet tall and 4.5 feet wide. A product of open pollination with Sike’s Dwarf, this small plant is absolutely covered with 6.5 inch tall blooms that are held upright, starting out white, and gradually blushing to a medium pink color. A very dense, compact shrub guaranteed to provide delight in the garden. Straight from Munchkinland. Pia Hydrangea Rooted Plantlets Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Pia’ | Zones 6–9 This little jewel deserves far greater attention from landscapers. Pia is an adorably small (2–3 foot) plant with adorably small (3–4 inch) bright pink blooms. It stays pink even in acidic soils, growing best in partial shade. Also useful in dry flower arrangements. Ruby Slippers Rooted Plantlets Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Ruby Slippers’ (NA 74836; PI 658493) | Zones 5–8 Dr. Sandy Reed at the U.S. National Arboretum shrub breeding program does it again! Ruby Slippers is a cross between the industry standard ‘Snow Queen’, and ‘Pee Wee’. Slightly bigger than Munchkin, it sizes up at 3.5 feet tall with a spread of 5 feet. Perhaps Ruby Slipper’s most stunning attribute is the 9-inch long blooms that open up white and then quickly blush a pale pink and soon turn a deep, deep rose color. The blooms hold strongly upright even in rainy, windy weather. A beautifully compact, colorful addition to the landscape. And look out for the flying monkeys. Hydrangea Munchkin ORDERS AND INQUIRIES | CALL 503-792-3696 | FAX 503-792-3650 | 11 HYDRANGEA | LILACS HYDRANGEA Sike’s Dwarf Rooted Plantlets Hydrangea quercifolia | Zones 5–9 “Honey, I shrunk the oakleaf!” All the beautiful oak leaf hydrangea characteristics of leaves, exfoliating bark, big white blooms and great fall color, just on a smaller scale. Snow Queen Rooted Plantlets Hydrangea quercifolia | Zone 5 An award-winning selection from Princeton Nurseries providing beauty and interest in all seasons. Large pure white flower trusses are conical in shape and remain upright even in heavy rains, turning pink when fully mature. Darkgreen oak-like foliage turns red-purple in fall, leaving behind peeling bark and attractive orange buds in winter. Grows to a height of five to six feet and is winter hardy. Hydrangea Snow Queen Anne Norman LILACS China Snow™ Microcuttings Syringa pekinensis ‘Morton’ | Zones 4–7 Selected from the collections of the Morton Arboretum for its graceful, upright-rounded habit; fragrant white flowers in mid- to late June; ornamental, cinnamon-colored exfoliating bark; and clean foliage through the growing season. The parent tree, measuring 40 feet in height with a 35 foot spread, originated from seed collected in Gansu Province, People’s Republic of China, by Joseph Rock during the 1920s. Syringa ‘Declaration’ Microcuttings Syringa x hyacinthiflora (NA 62975; PI 641804) | Zones 4–6 Another great release from our very own U.S. National Arboretum, based on the excellent breeding work by the late great Dr. Don Egolf during the 1970s. A cross between Syringa ‘Sweet Charity’ and Pocahontas, Declaration is most noted for its dramatically striking dark reddish-purple very fragrant blooms, outstanding deep burgundy fall color, and open upright growth habit. Performs best in cooler lilac-growing regions. Every year we grow millions of plants—the hottest of the hot, the newest of the new, the best of the best—some that are almost impossible to grow any other way. We ship them out of the lab as either Stage 2 microcuttings, or Stage 3 rooted plantlets. Since 1980, we’ve been helping growers and breeders bring new plants to market through our pioneering use of tissue culture. We continue to break new ground on the propagation trail.
