What is the Medicine Wheel?
The Medicine Wheel is an ancient, sacred Shamanic tool. It represents the Great Spirit, shows us
the 4 directions, the circle of life, as well as the 5 elements. It is generally traced back to the
Native American Shamans, and most of the teachings around the Medicine Wheel stem from this
“Red Path”. Due to the nature of Shamanism however, from the place where all is one, elements of
the Medicine Wheel teachings can be found in most Shamanic traditions in some shape or form.
This has been my experience of the Medicine Wheel, and it is in this Spirit that I would like to
share my Understanding of it.
What is a Shaman?
The word Shaman stems from the Tungusic language of Siberia, and means Medicine Man/Woman.
The Medicine Man in a tribe, traditionally had the role of the healer as well as the messenger. He/
she had to become and remain a ‘clean bone’ a clear vessel for Spirit to work through. Becoming a
Shaman is the journey of becoming the best person one can possibly be, i.e. live the highest
potential possible, in order to channel guidance and healing for the tribe. Traditionally a Shaman
would be called to this path by a “shamanic illness”, which would only be healed, once they
surrendered to the path of becoming a Shaman. The Shaman is the bridge between the material
world and the world of Spirit. In the view of the Shaman being the healer of relationships, between
mind and body, between people, between humans and nature, between matter and Spirit, I view
modern day therapists, healers, counselors and life coaches as modern day Shamans.
What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is inherent in every culture on the planet. As the world became smaller and various
belief systems dominated others, Shamanic systems in their absolutely traditional settings have
diminished significantly, but do still exist. What we have seen in recent years, is an awakening
interest in Shamanism. The Western World is rediscovering the Shamanic principles and tools of
various Shamanic schools and traditions, and is adapting them, where possible to us in our
Modern World. The Medicine Wheel is one example of such a tool, which now crosses many
divides, and is used extensively in ceremony, ritual and meditation around the world. Shamanism
therefore remains vital, and adapts itself to world cultures, as we share and teach in the Spirit of
Oneness.

What are some of the universal Shamanic principles taught by
the Medicine Wheel?
• the Medicine Wheel represents the Great Spirit or God
• there are 4 directions (North, South, East and West)
• teaches about the 5 elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether)
• all is One
• life and our experience of it is cyclical (day/night; the seasons; the circle of life)
• there is a deep inherent structure and order in the nature of things, yet life remains a
mystery
• live a balanced life, taking care of your
- body (physical needs)
- mind (psychological needs)
- heart (emotional needs)
- soul (spiritual needs)
• respect all things, as they are alive (mineral, plant and animal kingdoms are valued as part
of the principle of Oneness – there is no separation)
• the members of the mineral, plant and animal kingdoms are our teachers or totems, our
companions and our tools. They need to be treated with care at all times. We were all
created by the Great Creator, the Great Mystery and the Eternal Truth
• we experience the duality of life in opposing energies, e.g. yin and yang, female and male,
the Grandmothers and the Grandfathers, hot and cold, day and night. These require
balance on a daily basis.
• be… be whole

What is the African Medicine Wheel?
I was introduced to the Medicine Wheel during a Vision Quest 5 years ago. I subsequently
engaged with it in various rituals and ceremonies, guided by different teachers, over the past years.
It became a very valuable tool to me, which provided me with structure as well as mystery. When I
embarked on a personal art process of illustrating the Medicine Wheel for myself, I collected all
my various teachings and started to do more research on the teachings of the Medicine Wheel
online and in publications. What I discovered was that not one of the Sources I engaged, were
absolutely identical. They all taught the same principles however, using a similar tool. So this has
been my process, to make this tool applicable to us living in the Southern Hemisphere, with the
animals which we are familiar with. The result is the African Medicine Wheel in the way in which I
have learned to understand it. May it be a blessing to you, as you learn to engage with it on your
personal medicine journey, around the wheel.
How can the African Medicine Wheel be of benefit to you?
• the word Medicine can be substituted by the word energy – energy wheel.
• it can provide structure for personal meditations or rituals
• it can provide structure and inspiration for group meditations and rituals
• it teaches the ancient universal teachings of truth , thus allowing you to discover who you
are, and where your place is in the big Whole
• it honors and depicts a sacred space in your home or garden, a place where you can rest,
connect with Spirit, and experience guidance
• the medicine wheel can be used to bring harmony between opposites (e.g. inner and
outer life) by using it to balance the opposites
• it brings insights and leads to personal growth and transformation

How do I build the Medicine Wheel?
What do I need?
I have developed a do it yourself medicine wheel box, which contains all the basic materials
needed to build your own medicine wheel. You can add to these as you please.
You can also collect the tools yourself – the beauty of the Shamanic world is that there is no
‘wrong’ or ‘right’ way. The essence is, whether it is true for you.
Materials:
• 4 stones to mark the directions (North, South, East, West)
• A centre stone/crystal/candle/feather stick representing heaven and earth
• 2 pieces of string or 2 long straight sticks
• A compass (optional) or another way to establish the North
• 4 smaller stones to mark the directions (North West, South West, South East, North East)
• A number of stones/rocks/crystals to represent the circle

Building the wheel
Step 1:
Choose a suitable, flat, clear area where you can build your Medicine
Wheel. The size can vary from as small as a few cm’s to meters.
Establish North, and place your North stone in that place.
Step 2:
Place the 2 pieces of string or 2 sticks in
the 4 directions, starting from your North
stone in the following way: place one end
of the string at the North stone and place
the string straight down (South) from the North stone. Decide how big
your wheel should be, and place your South Stone on the string
opposite the North stone. Now place the second piece of string
perpendicular to the first one in the middle between the North and
South Stones. Place the West stone on the left on the string and the
East stone on the right on the string, the same distance apart, as the N
and S stones.
Step 3:
Place your candle/crystal or feather stick in the centre where the 2 strings cross.
Step 4:
Establish the following directions from the centre of the circle
(North West, South West, South East, North East)and place the
stones to represent them on a imaginary circular line, on the
circumference of the circle, in the place of the direction, in
relation to the N,S,W,E marker stones
Step 5:
Now place the rest of your stones along the imaginary line, the
circumference of the circle, connecting all the marker stones.
Then place some more stones beside the string, connecting the
North to the centre, the South to the centre, the East to the
centre, and the west to the centre. The basic structure of the
wheel is now complete. You can pick the string up, once you
have marked the lines. You can add more stones, flowers, feathers and crystals to decorate your
wheel.

How do I use the African Medicine Wheel?
I have experienced the Medicine wheel in many different settings and have used it in many
different ways. The tool is ancient, universal and transformative. I will be making a few suggestions,
and naming a few ideas. The best approach is to build it as often as you can, wherever you can,
inside and outside.
Feel what the medicine wheel wants you to do, and listen to what it is teaching you.
It is particularly powerful to use it on auspicious days such as the full moon, the dark moon, the
equinoxes – autumn 21 March and spring 21 September, the winter solstice - 21 June – the
shortest day of the year, the longest night of the year, as well as the summer solstice – 21
December - the longest day of the year, the shortest night of the year, birthdays and new
beginning or ending days, such as new year or new years eve.
The Medicine Wheel is used for personal meditations or rituals
• build the wheel with a specific intention and ask a specific question. Expect an answer.
• build the wheel with no specific intention and be open for general guidance
• build the wheel to mark a day or event.
Once the wheel is complete open the wheel to bring you guidance by making an offering, or
saying a prayer in each direction, ending in the centre. All the while breathing deeply and being
aware and completely present.
For example starting in the East. Stand in the East, face the East and offer a prayer to the Spirit of
the East, or the angels and guides, ancient ones of the East, inviting them into the circle, and
thanking them for their presence.
You can offer incense (imphepho), or tobacco (for the grandfathers or yang energy) and maize
meal (for the grandmothers or yin energy). The offering is not prescribed, it can be something
which is of value to you, which you would like to share. It does not have to be complicated, it can
be as simple as offering blessed water.
Continue around the wheel in an anti-clockwise direction, following the movement of the sun.
Stand in the North, face the North and offer a prayer to the Spirit of the North, or the angels and
guides, ancient ones of the North, inviting them into the circle, and thanking them for their
presence. You can make your offering/s.
Do the same in the West, then the South and end up in the centre. Where you can ‘centre’ yourself
with the awareness of heaven (father sky) above you and the earth (mother earth) below you. Feel
yourself connected to both and open yourself up as the channel between the heavens and the
earth. Make your offering/s.
Teachings about the African Medicine Wheel
Christel Engelbrecht
Now you can become aware of how you feel and whether you feel drawn in any specific direction.
You may feel yourself drawn to the South. If you do go to the South, face the South and sit or
stand there, connecting with the energy of the South, and being open to receive the messages
from the South.
You can also consult your Medicine Wheel teachings, or be inspired by the Medicine Wheel poster.
When you feel that your time with the wheel is complete. Revisit each direction, thanking the
guides and angels for their presence, and releasing them from the ceremony. Of course you can
ask for continued protection by your guides and angels, it is important however to close the
ceremony, and to say thank you and goodbye. Once again you can do this in any way you feel is
right for you. It may be as simple as a bow of acknowledgement to each direction, with a thank
you and an Amen. Close the circle and collect your stones and sticks.
The Medicine Wheel provides structure and inspiration for group meditations and
rituals
• build the wheel as a group, with a specific intention and ask a specific question. Expect an
answer.
• build the wheel as a group, with no specific intention and be open for general guidance
• build the wheel to mark a day or event.
• use the wheel as a central focus of a celebration together.
A similar format can be followed in building the wheel as a group, as explained above. The work is
shared, and emphasis can be placed on who fulfills what task. One person could place the stones,
another could make the offerings, and yet another do the prayers. If you are a group of 6 people,
you could each choose a direction, and follow the steps for that specific direction. For example, if
I have chosen the North, I will place the North marker stone, and wait for the other 5 members to
place their stones in relation to mine. We would then build the connecting stones together to
complete the wheel. Once the wheel is complete, each person stands in their chosen direction and
does the prayers and offerings. As a group you can decide where you should start. In the Southern
Hemisphere we generally follow the movement of the sun (anti-clockwise) You could also follow
the movement of the opposites. East to West, North to South etc. You could complete the circle,
and connect the lines inside the circle with the offerings of water, tobacco or maize meal.
Once the wheel has been created the possibilities of engaging with the wheel as a group are
endless, it really depends on the group and the event.
• you could light a sacred fire in the centre of the circle.
• you could stand in the circle in silence or sing, chant or tone together
• you can perform a blessing of 1 person, on their birthday for example, a child, a couple
or each other
Teachings about the African Medicine Wheel

• you can sit and meditate in silence.
When you feel that your time with the wheel is complete. Revisit each direction, thanking the
guides and angels for their presence, and releasing them from the ceremony. Of course you can
ask for continued protection by your guides and angels, it is important however to close the
ceremony, and to say thank you and goodbye. Once again you can do this in any way you feel is
right as a group. It may be as simple as a bow of acknowledgement to each direction, with a thank
you and an Amen. Close the circle and collect your stones and sticks.
The Medicine wheel honors and depicts a sacred space in your home or garden, a
place where you can rest, connect with Spirit, and experience guidance
You can build a medicine wheel specifically to mark a sacred space in your home, or garden. Once
it is complete, and you have opened it with prayers, you can keep it open, by leaving the candle in
the centre on (make sure this is safe!!) You can have this personal wheel as a permanent feature, it
can be your altar, honoring it at certain times of the day, by lighting the candle in it and praying in
it. If you have limited space you can build a small wheel, and allow it to be the focus of your
meditation and prayer.

What does the Medicine Wheel teach me?
The circle of the Medicine Wheel is a universal symbol of unity, and represents both these
principles of all is one, and life is cyclical.
The Medicine Wheel gives us a practical, and deeply symbolic understanding of life.
The Medicine Wheel teaches the ancient universal teachings of truth, thus allowing you to discover
who you are, and where your place is in the big Whole.
You can use the Medicine Wheel to bring harmony between opposites (e.g. inner and outer life) by
using it to balance the opposites.
It is a tool which will bring you insights, leading to personal growth and transformation.
The teachings of the East
The place of the first light, new life and the greater perspective, awareness and understanding.
The colour
Yellow, the colour of the sun as it rises in the morning. Gold, the colour of a treasure, the gift of a
new dawn, it is precious. Yellow is the colour of our third Chakra, the solar plexus, the place of
personal power. This is the bright light of beginnings, of optimism, the perspective of the child.
Yellow is clear and sunny, it brings warmth and is uplifting. We gain clarity in the East, as the light
rises on our question and illuminates what we could not see before. Yellow is active and outgoing. We awaken, gain vision and clarity. Yellow signifies confidence especially in cognition and
thinking. We develop autonomy, and ego-strength, through knowledge and education, and learn to
communicate with clarity and confidence.
The time of day
Early morning, dawn, sunrise, the time of new beginnings, the magic of the first rays of the sun,
which bring us a bright new day. We are at a new stage in our life, we feel the energy of new
beginnings.
The element
The sun rising, the energy of light or fire. In the East we are experiencing the beginning of the
power of the element of fire as it grows, and reaches it’s full potential in the North, at midday. In
the East the focus is on the warmth, experienced in the early morning as the sun rises. It
illuminates, sheds light on the issue at hand. The sun invigorates us and all beings to become
active and aware, to develop ego strength. The golden rays of the sun remind us of the Source of
all life and light, the Divine. The element of light invites us to rise up and shine!

The season
Spring, the time of new life and new beginnings, There is an awareness that the first leaves and
buds form in spring, they are tender and need to be nurtured and treated with gentle kindness.
Nurture your new ideas, and optimism. You are at the beginning of a new cycle, the planet and
you are awakening to a new season, to growth, to life. Treasure this special time in your life, where
excitement grows.
The personal year/s in Numerology
1-3 years
The resource
Vision, and light - the way of the visionary, gaining the greater perspective on things, seeing the
bigger picture. The East brings us clarity, illumination and new life. The resurrection and the new
birth. In the East we can rise up with the sun and the eagle to see a new dawn, to start afresh.
From the perspective of the eagle we can see the bigger picture, and can choose our way forward
with clarity, due to the guidance received.
The message
With the awareness and understanding gained, we can tell the truth without blame or judgment.
We are invited to speak and live our truth. We are also called to heroic action. We represent the
vision, the greater perspective to ourselves and others. We are in a position to speak clearly.
The archetype
The Child, the Innocent 3 Life Path number in Numerology. The optimism and childlike
enthusiasm is with you. You can radiate exuberance and bring light, laughter and sunshine to
those around you.
The archetype
The Visionary and Hero 9 Life Path number in Numerology. From the higher perspective you are
called to be an inspiration to yourself and others, you represent the vision to others, and are
called to act as the hero.
The shadow archetype
When the shadow of the East is present in your life, it will present itself in presenting a false self to
the world. Your attention will be drawn to this, so that you can become authentic. The shadow will
present as a tainted, unclear version of the potential which exists in you. Use the healing salve
presented by the East to address this situation in your life.
The animal messenger
The eagle, rises up in grace and strength, to teach you that a higher perspective is needed in your
life or in this situation. The eagle has incredibly good eye sight, and is therefore very effective as a
page 17 of 29

Christel Engelbrecht
hunter. The eagle sees clearly from a distance, and strikes with accuracy and confidence. The fish
eagle in particular has a very special call, which can be identified from great distances. The fish
eagle teaches you to make your special call, to speak your truth, because you have the higher
perspective, and can see clearly.
The meditation
Walking meditation, during this meditation you focus on the right placement of your feet as you
walk. Walk slowly, yet confidently, carefully placing your feet on the ground, as you walk forward.
The awareness of the various parts of your feet as they touch the ground, give you the
encouragement that you are walking steadily. That you are connecting with the ground beneath
your feet. Place one foot in front of the other with grace an awareness. Walk in this way in silence,
breathing deeply in a comfortable relaxed rhythm. Walk for 15 minutes. Early morning is the best
time to do this mediation. Choose a place in nature if possible, where you will not be disturbed. If
you are walking indoors walk in a big circle.
The instrument
Bell, chimes signifying clarity
The healing salve
Singing: the east calls you to sing your song. Everyday, every moment has a special song which
you are called upon to sing. Allow yourself to hear the clarity and beauty of your own voice. Make
sounds, tone, chant or sing your favourite tune. Find a group to sing with, express yourself through
the power of your voice. If you are struggling with the issue at hand or this direction ask yourself:
“When in my life did I stop singing? Where did I stop speaking/living my truth?” Write the answer
in your journal and reflect on it.
The teachings of the North
The place of action, presence and energy. The Power of Now.
The colour
Red, the colour of blood, of life. The colour red is the colour of our base chakra. It deals with the
very practical survival instinct of human beings. This is the colour of passion and power. It is an
active colour, it is out-going. Red is often used as a warning signal, as in a traffic light or STOP
sign. Red is a colour which symbolizes strong emotions such as anger, aggression, the colour of
war, or ‘seeing red’. It shows a strong will to live to survive, and is a symbol of our libido. The
teaching of the North is about engaging actively, consciously and in full power with life, or the
issue at hand.
The time of day
Midday – the heat of the day, full sunshine, we are in the most favourable position to act, the light
is at it’s brightest, we can see clearly and are strong.
Teachings about the African Medicine Wheel
Christel Engelbrecht
The element
Fire. Fire is associated with Divinity and is considered to be Sacred. The fire medicine or fire energy
is to be respected and feared. Fire is a blessing, but it is also dangerous. Fire is a great resource, it
changed the lives of human beings in evolution significantly. It can be used to cook, to warm
ourselves, for protection as well as sacred ceremonies and rituals. When fire is abused it reminds us
of its destructive power. The teaching of the element of fire in the North is about being balanced,
and working with the energy of fire in our lives in a balanced way. We need to be ‘fired up’, in
order to achieve our goals, but when we have too much fire we can suffer from ‘burn out’. Our fire
can fuel us and produce wonderful actions and results. Unbalanced people can lack fire
completely or can burn themselves and others with excessive fire. Fire teaches us to learn to deal
with power in a responsible, cautious and respectful way.
Fire is often associated with the Sacred. In Greek Mythology fire was preserved for the Gods, until
Prometheus stole the sacred fire and gave it to human beings. Keeping a Sacred fire (or a candle)
burning in the centre of a community or sacred building, is an ancient tradition to remind us of
the central role of the Sacred/Light in our lives.
Fire (and smoke) is also a powerful element used for space clearing, cleansing and dedication.
Fire is the element of ‘transmutation’ in Alchemy. Fire is also seen as the catalyst between the
known and the unknown.
The season
Summer – expansion, reaching your full potential. This is the season in which the plant kingdom
experiences growth and reaches it’s full potential towards autumn, as the fruit ripens. We too are in
full maturity, at our maximum strength, and need the right amount of water, sunshine and good
food to be strong and reach our full potential.
The personal year/s in Numerology
4 - 6 personal years
The resource
Power, the power of presence, of clear communication and right positioning, The power of right
action.
The message
Show up to life and to yourself, be fully present, fully engaging your body, mind, spirit and soul in
all aspects of your life. You are the master of your destiny – take charge!
The archetype
The warrior, the leader, 1 Life Path number in Numerology,
page 19 of 29
Teachings about the African Medicine Wheel
Christel Engelbrecht
The transformer - 5 Life Path number in Numerology
The mature adult, who has the capacity for right action. You have reached full maturity and can
take responsibility for all your actions.
The shadow archetype
The rebel – using the destructive energy of the fire to harm yourself and others or the victim (poor
me) the fire energy has been extinguished, and life is happening to me. I am the victim of my
circumstances, without power. Use the healing salve presented by the North to address this
situation in your life.
The animal messenger
Kudu antelope – the Kudu is a powerful animal, it is known as the fighter, the warrior. It
symbolizes the ability to protect himself with his mighty horns. The scene of two strong male
Kudu’s fighting in the African bushveld is one of the most awe inspiring scenes to witness. The
Kudu with his big eyes and ears is very aware of danger at all times, and quick to act. He can jump
incredibly high and symbolizes agility and physical strength. The Kudu teaches us that we can
protect ourselves, that we can stand up for what we believe is right. The Kudu shows us the power
of awareness and presence. The power of Now.
The meditation
Standing meditation: stand with your feet slightly apart, in line with your shoulders. Your arms
relaxed, hanging with your hands beside your hips, your fingers slightly curled. You are standing
strong, grounded yet relaxed. Allow your eyes to soften, choose a focus in the distance, and keep
your eyes open. Allow yourself to feel the strength in your body in this standing position. Feel
grounded on your feet, and the strength of your spine, and bone structure. You can cultivate the
awareness of the fire energy in your body, rising from your first chakra, at the bottom of your
spine. You can also connect to the fire energy of the sun, and the fire in the centre of the earth.
Feel the life in your body, connect to the strength and vitality of your blood. Maintain this stance
for up to 15 minutes.
The instrument
The rattle, it calls your soul to the present.
The healing salve
Dance! The teaching of the North invites you to dance. When you are called by the direction of
the North you are called to dance. To celebrate your vitality and life force. So put on your
favourite music and allow yourself to have fun, dance and jump for joy. If you are struggling with
the issue at hand or this direction ask yourself: “When in my life did I stop dancing? To whom am
I loosing power?” Write the answer in your journal and reflect on it.

The teachings of the West
The place of searching, introspection and hibernation – letting go
The colour
Black, the colour which holds all the other colours in it’s darkness. Black is the lack of light. It is
the colour of introspection, to go into the cave to reflect, rest and shed your skin. Black represents
death, becoming invisible and the void. Everything begins and ends in the void. Black also holds
the space of mystery, the lack of form. It is the shamanic realm of magic and superstition. Black is
often associated with fear, but can also inspire awe – such as a starry night sky. You are called to
detach, to let go.
The time of day
The sun set, night, the wisdom of the moon and expanse of the stars. The night holds a space of
mystery. It also is the time to rest, and to retreat into a space which is warm and safe, such as a
cave. The night is the time where we sleep, to regain our strength. You are not required to act right
now. It is your time to reflect. In the night we are guided by silvery light of the moon and the
colourful magic of the stars. The waxing and waning of the moon represents the cyclical nature of
life to us. The female menstrual cycle is in sync with the cycle of the moon. The moon also
interacts with the element of water, with the tides, in a mysterious and magical way. The West is
the place where we become in touch with our shadow, our deepest darkest secrets, and the depth
of our emotions. The dark night of the soul. The night teaches us that no matter how dark things
may seem, we always have grandmother moon and the diversity of stars watching over us, from
above.
The element
Water – the depth of our emotions. The element of water is representative of movement, and life.
Our bodies consist predominantly of water. A lack of water will lead to death. Make sure that you
drink sufficient amounts of clean, healthy water. Water has the ability to cleanse, and has been
used in this way in ritual and ceremony for eons. Water can purify, wash clean, and can be a
blessing. Water is known to have a calming effect. Sit beside a river, or swim in a lake, or the ocean.
Take a relaxing bath. We are moved to introspection and stillness in the West. Water can be
overwhelming, a powerful vast force, like the ocean. It can also be a devastating, destructive force,
such as a Tsunami or flood. In the West we can be overwhelmed by our emotions. We are called to
detach, to go within, to find the place of silence, so that we can let go. Water heals, cleanses and
rejuvenates.
The season
Late autumn and winter. In winter nature goes into hibernation. The trees let go of their leaves in
autumn, and are bare and empty in winter. Animals hibernate, they rest in dark caves or under the
ground. The West calls on you to do the same. Find a safe space where you can go within, where
page 21 of 29
Teachings about the African Medicine Wheel
Christel Engelbrecht
you can experience the darkness, where you can rest. This is the place where you connect with the
mystery again. Where you gather your strength, by surrendering, and letting go..
The personal year/s in Numerology
7 year
The resource
Wisdom, right timing, there is a time for action, for being out there, and then there is a time to be
still, to rest to go within. The West gives us the insight that we can surrender, we do not need to
control. We are learning to trust in the darkness.
The message
Be open to outcome, let go of the attachment to a specific outcome, trust!
The archetype
The teacher 7 Life Path number in Numerology, the one who has learnt, and who has become
wise, is now called to teach. The teachers are the elders, the wise ones, the sages, 9 Life Path
number in Numerology, the teachers of society, the ones with wisdom and experience.
The shadow archetype
The West brings us in touch with our shadow energy. The darkness in us, which we try to hide
from ourselves and others. The shadow presents itself in many shapes and forms. In the West we
are called to look specifically at issues of control, self-righteousness, as well as judgment of
ourselves and others. Use the healing salve presented by the West to address this situation in your
life – silence.
The animal messenger
The snake, just like the darkness is often feared and hated, many superstitions surround the snake,
it is often controversial. The snake is a powerful, totem animal, full of wisdom. In silence it moves
about swiftly, on the ground. It hibernates in winter, the season of the West. It teaches us that we
too need to find a cave to rest and go inward from time to time. This is where we find our own
inner wisdom. The snake sheds it’s skin as it grows, reminding us that we need to let go of the old
habits, belief systems and values, in order to grow and expand. It is thus the symbol of death and
rebirth. The snake is also associated with miracles and healing, it represents a transformative
power. The snake is a symbol our life force and creative energy – the Kundalini energy. Fertility
and sexuality also form part of the snakes message. Once the old is released, the creative juices
can flow, and new life can be born. The snake is also believed to be representative of Evil, bad
news, the shadow within us. The direction of the West calls us to engage with the darkness or
Shadow energy in our psyche. This leads to deep inner change and wisdom. When the snake
appears you can expect change, a transition as well as spiritual awakening. Be aware of the shape

of the snake when it shows itself to you. Is it coiled up, ready to transform, uncoil and grow? Is it
about to use it’s weapon, the poisonous bite? What do you need to defend and protect?
The meditation
Sitting in silence. Find a comfortable position, on a chair or on the floor, where you can sit with
your back straight. Connect with your breath, breathing slowly and deeply. Feel the support of the
ground or chair and relax into it, remaining alert. Sit in silence for 15 minutes.
The instrument
Clicking of sticks and bones, calling the ancient ones, connecting to your ancient memory
The healing message
Be silent! The West is the great teacher of Silence. The space where everything and nothing exists
in its expansiveness. When the West has called you, listen to the call and spend as much time as
possible in silence. The West invites us to retreat from the busyness of life and people. It indicates
that you have a need for introspection and searching. You are experiencing an ending or death of
some kind in your life. It is time to let go. If you are struggling with the issue at hand or this
direction ask yourself: “When in my life did I become uncomfortable with the sweet space of
silence?” Write the answer in your journal and reflect on when it.
The teachings of the South
The place of Spirit, of the ancestors, guides and angels. It is the place of knowledge and wisdom.
The colour
White, the colour of Spirit, of innocence and purity. White is the colour associated with angels and
holiness. White is clean and untainted. White is representative of the light of consciousness and
transformation. It can also be a colour representing a lack or indicating that something is missing,
it has not yet been defined..
The time of day
Midnight, “the witches hour”, “the hour of Truth”, the time of the night when all things are
possible, when the channel to the Divine is clear and open. At Midnight we transcend ordinary
time, and enter a space of magic, of the world beyond this one. So it may seem a short period of
time in human terms, but since it is not linked to time at all, it is the space of eternity, of the
Divine. The darkness of midnight is illuminated by Spirit.
The element:
Air. Air is all around us at all times, but can not be seen. We can only see the effect that air has on
the environment, when we see the leaves of a tree moving in the wind or a cloud of dust being
twirled around, in the shape of a whirlwind. Air is the element of transformation and change. The

Spirit of air is movement. We are in constant communication with the element of air through our
breath, which is vital for our survival. The element of air is the source of life as well as our
inspiration and aspirations. Air brings new perception and change. Smoke and smell are carried by
the element of air. One can use incense, or smudging to cleanse and purify a space. Air will also
carry the aroma of flowers, rose petals or aroma therapy oils around to transform a space, to make
it pleasant. Sound is carried on airwaves. The powerful transformative effects of sound have been
known and utilized to heal and transform for many centuries.
The season
End of winter, the beginning of spring, this is the time of transition, when the cold winter is not yet
over, but some of the new life of spring is already visible. The first leaves and flowers make their
appearance. We are aware that we are in a space of becoming, but still need to tend to the time of
rest and retreat of Winter. In this time it is important to be aware, and to find the balance between
the new inspiration, and the recovery from the death to the old. We experience states of elation,
freedom and transcendence, in this space of transition.
The personal year/s in Numerology:
9 year, the year in which we are letting go, resting and preparing for the new. This is the time
where we experience the joy and freedom which is the reward at the end of a journey. The cycle
has come to an end, we have worked hard, and can now experience the transcendence, the
enlightenment and insights gained along the way.
The message
Listen to what has heart and meaning, listen deeper than the level of content, seeing beyond the
visible, this is the time to be open to guidance from the realms beyond the seen world. Because we
have released the old, we now get to the essence of life, to the core of our existence, which is love.
The resource
Love. Love is a powerful energy, which can be experienced in an endless variety of ways. It may be
the love of a mother for her child, the love between lovers, the love shared in friendship and the
love of the Divine. In the south we connect with our heart, with the space of love within us. During
this time we are very receptive to love from the Divine as well as the world around us. We are also
in a space to share the love which we have inside with the world around us.
The archetype
The healer 6 Life Path number in Numerology. The healer works with the transformative power of
love and guidance. Being the channel for love and healing to flow to the being in need of healing,
is the state of the realised healer. The journey of becoming a healer is to learn that one does not
have to be the source of the love, but that one is merely the channel from the Source to the world.

The shadow archetype
The martyr, the wounded healer archetype has experienced much pain, and is not yet at the place
of forgiveness and trust. The wounded healer is still trying to heal with his/her own power, which
often leads to exhaustion and burn out. The martyr gives too much of him/herself, leaving him/her
exhausted and vulnerable. The journey through the South teaches you to trust in guidance, to
surrender to the Divine, and to then act from a place of Divine love and Wisdom. Use the healing
salve presented by the South to address this situation in your life.
The animal messenger
The rock hyrax (dassie) is the trickster. The dassie teaches us that things are not always what they
seem. He looks like a rodent, but can actually be described as the closest living relative to the
elephant. The dassie shares numerous features with the elephant, such as the shape of some of
their bones, the sensitive pads on their feet, excellent hearing and memory, as well as small “tusks”.
He teaches you that you should not take yourself so seriously, it is great to laugh at yourself when
you have been fooled, or when you have made a mistake. Laughter is a great medicine. The dassie
teaches innocence and humility. He releases us from the burden of taking on too much
responsibility. He often just sits in the Sun, soaking up the healing rays. When he is required to act,
he does so swiftly. The dassie is also representative of love. The female dassie’s take turns in
looking after the young dassie’s, similar to a Kindergarten, so that the others can feed and rest.
They also often huddle together in groups to keep warm. The dassie has a gestation period of
nearly 8 months, which is very long for a animal of its size.
The butterflies represent the ancestors and guides. They bring us joy, playfulness and laughter.
Butterflies represent transformation, as they go through significantly different developmental
stages. The delicate, gentle wings, allow the butterfly to fly from one colourful flower to another.
They remind us of unconditional love and inner freedom.
The meditation
Lying down. This meditation serves to allow your whole body to rest. Lie down comfortably on a
mat or on the grass, or ground. Relax your arms beside your body, put your hands flat on the
ground. Let your legs lie slightly apart. Close your eyes, relax and breathe deeply. Now connect to
the earth through every part of your body touching it. Focus on opening your heart, to receive the
love coming from the earth below. Become aware of the vast sky realm around you, and open up
to receive the love and guidance from above. Visualise your heart being filled with warm, pink
light. Allow this light to spread though your whole body. Allow the love to flow through your
heart, your body to the space and people around you. You can allow this space to become as big
as possible. Allow yourself to be the channel of Divine love and Grace. Meditate for 15 minutes.
The instrument
The drum, it is representative of our heartbeat, the pulse of our life.

The healing salve
Story telling. Tell your life story to a friend or loved one, or even a stranger. If it is not possible to
tell someone, then tell the story to yourself in the mirror, or the guides and angels around you.
You could also write your life story down. If you are struggling with the issue at hand or this
direction ask yourself: “When in my life did I become disenchanted with my own life story?” Write
the answer in your journal and reflect on when it.
The teachings of the Centre
The Divine - home – the Source – the place of Spirit. There is always a way home, we are always in
the centre, all paths lead to the Source.
The centre has two aspects: heaven and earth, as above, so below, inspiration and expression .
Heaven – as above: Father Sky
The colour
Blue, the colour of the ether, the sky, of expansiveness, and healing. Blue is representative of the
element of water, the lakes and oceans, as well as the heavens. Blue is the colour of the throat
chakra, bringing clear expression and communication. It is a cooling and calming colour.
The element
Ether, is synonymous with space, or nothingness. It is the space which we call heaven. Ether is the
transmitter of the guidance which we receive from above. It is the place of Spirit.
The resource
Receiving guidance and inspiration, which then needs to be expressed in the world (earth
element).
The message
We are always blessed and guided from above.
The archetype
The Spiritual messenger, prophet, mystic 11 and Life path in Numerology. The challenge is to
remain open to guidance, and to find the language in which to express it. When we receive

The meditation
The purpose of this meditation is one of centering, and clearing the channel, the body. It can be
done standing or sitting down. Close your eyes, relax and breathe deeply. Feel the connecting to
the earth touching your feet. Feel the presence of the sky/ether above. Allow the flow of light and
grace into the top of your head, through your body, into your feet, into the earth. See your body
as a clear channel, the connection through which the inspiration and guidance can flow. Draw up
the healing warmth from the earth into your body, and remain grounded, as you also remain open
to channel at the top of your head, where you are receiving light and love. You can also stand with
your arms held up high to receive the light from above in gratitude.
The instrument
The flute, windpipes representing the channel through which love, grace and guidance flow, the
connection between heaven and earth.
Earth - so below: Mother Earth
The colour
Brown, is the colour of the earth, the soil, the home. Brown is the colour which brings us to the
present moment, to establish, manipulate and cultivate matter. The brown soil can be rich and
fertile, ready to receive the seeds, or to hold the roots of plants, shrubs and trees. Dry brown soil
or sand can also represent barrenness, a place where nothing grows, where we feel barren and
empty. Brown teaches us that we need to be grounded if we want to prosper. We need to grow
roots, commit ourselves in order to establish something.
The element:
Earth. The earth was revered and honored by ancient cultures as a living being. A balanced
relationship with the earth has always been central to the survival of life on it. Ancient societies
lived with the earth, rather than on it, as modern societies often do. Disrespect of the element of
the earth, our Mother planet causes destruction and can lead to extinction. Gaia is the Greek
deity, who embodied the Mother goddess of the earth. Human beings were created from the earth,
we are earth, so as we honour and respect the element of earth, we respect and honour ourselves.
The earth element is grounding, strengthening and brings stability. The earth also holds ancient
wisdom and power.
The resource
Commitment, grounding and strength.
The message
Ground yourself, your project or idea in the structure, support and physical strength of the earth
element. Establish yourself.

feeling stuck or being too rigid.
Use the healing salve presented by the Source to address this situation in your life.
The meditation
Standing on the earth, grow roots from your feet into the earth. Let them grow strong and deep.
This will ground you.
You can hold some earth in your hand and connect to the element in that way. Relax, breathe
deeply and allow yourself to feel the earth element in your body, in your bones, and muscles. You
are part of the earth. Feel the warmth, strength and support which the earth gives to you. Allow
this stability to help you to establish yourself on the earth. Center yourself, focusing on drawing
up the strong supportive energy of the earth into your spine.
The healing message of the Centre
Prayer and meditation, in reverence and awe and devotion of the Divine. Dedicate at least one
time of the day or night to spend in direct connection with the Divine. This may be done in a
variety of ways. You will know what works for you. It may be a walk in nature, listening to sacred
or beautiful music or making music yourself. Prayer and meditation are ancient ways of connecting
to the Source. The medicine wheel can be your sacred space in which you do this every day. You
can also visit a sacred space or building. The Centre teaches that it does not matter when, how or
where you make the Space for the Light to enter your life, for you to connect with the Divine
within you and everything around you, what is important is that you do so! (as often as you can)
Rituals
Rituals incorporating the African Medicine Wheel are particularly powerful on auspicious days
such as: the phases of the Moon – full moon and the dark moon, the equinoxes – Autumn 21
March and Spring 21 September, the Winter Solstice - 21 June – the shortest day of the year, the
longest night of the year, the Summer Solstice – 21 December - the longest day of the year, the
shortest night of the year.
