Box 333, Elfers FL 34680 boomerzmagazine.com Another month has come and it’s time to honor our fathers. Fathers Day is a big day to pay tribute to the men who made us the people we are today. For those of you whose dads are still living, pay homage to them on this day. You never know when our Spiritual Father will call on him to come home. Enjoy your time together. On a lighter note, Boomerz magazine has some great news. We’re launching our second publication in Pasco County. Same stories, great Boomerz content, just different ads. The first issue will be in July and cover all of south Pasco, to include the Trinity area. Those advertisers wishing to reach the Woodstock generation — that’s you — can give us a call and get your business in our first collector’s edition. Our advertising rates are unbelievably reasonable and we reach a demographic that has the most expendable income. This publication is available at all CVS stores as well as 7-Elevens in special racks. Well, folks, until next month, have a great June and continue enjoying your copy of Boomerz. May God bless our country, state, city and, most important, you and your family. — Frank Allen Publisher and Editor CONTENTS © 2015 Boomerz Magazine LLC. And the neckties followed. Check out 1976, the year of America’s bicentennial. Apple made its first computer and The Band made its historic split. Gas was 59 cents a gallon! Legendary golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez had a dream ot helping area youths succeed in life, and on the golf course. 11 George on the radio Q105’s Pat George is a baby boomer who got into radio in an unconventional way, radio newsman Roger P. Schulman writes. 13 Giving you the rock The Defendants, a five-member band, prosecutes classic boomer rock and roll in venues across north Pinellas County. 15 For The Health Of It Pet allergies are the stuff of myths, but they can be conquered. And it’s easier to protect your skin from sun, smoke and chemicals. 19 Larger than life Artist Tony DiFalco’s scultptures catch the eye, sure, but the size alone is impressive, as well as the list of those who have commissioned his work. 27 Pet Peeves As you prepare for hurricane season, don’t forget to prepare your pets. Watkins Wit and Witticism For fathers everywhere, it’s necktie time By TAMMY QUARLES An essay for Boomerz S Reprinted from the Shopping Guide, June 1991 ince the beginning of time, people have honored their patriarchs — even staging full-scale celebrations including activities ranging from feasts to sacrifices. Each family has its own way of celebrating Fathers Day. Certainly, none of these could rival the sacrificial rites of our ancestors, but Dad does deserve some form of tribute at least once a year. Part of Dad’s honorarium usually involves some sort of gift. Actually, “gift” is only a disguising label for “practical and not-too-sentimental but relatively worthless trinket.” That’s right — it’s necktie season. Sixty-five percent of all dads will receive neckties for Fathers Day. While a small percentage of those carefully selected adornments will actually be worn by their recipients, most of the necktie benefactors out there seem to be intent on giving Dad an “interesting” and “different” sort of necktie to add to his “tacky tie” collection at the back of his closet. Conspiring another 33 percent of the Fathers Day gift selections is a rather extensive list of “stuff that if Dad really needed, he would buy for himself” — golf balls, all types, including the serious Pro Top Flite ball as well as the neon-green model with the words “Oh, S--t!” stamped in black... cheap cologne such as “Stud” and “English Locker Room”... useless power tools and assorted gadgets like the new Ronco electronic combination pocket knife, screwdriver, nail clipper and nut cracker cleverly disguised as a pair of tweezers (order now and receive a free set of Ginsu knives)... more socks...more underwear (the ones from last Christmas are sitll in the package because most men prefer to wear the older ones that moths have eaten holes through — they know it drives their wives bonkers)... the perpetual shaving mug and brush (who really uses that combo except Floyd The Barber?)... and of course, the inevitable coffee cup emblazoned with “I’d Rather Be Fishing/Golfing/ Skiing/Sleeping/Watching Football.” Two percent of all Dads get something they really want for Fathers Day. Why not give Dad tickets to a baseball game, or a coupon promising to mow the lawn/clean the pool/ take out the trash for a week/bathe the dog/ wash the car? How about a video of the Hooters girls or a subscription to Playboy? Maybe Dad would like a pet boa constrictor and some live mice? Or have you considered giving him a case of beer and a muzzle for Mom? This Fathers Day, stop and think before you buy the usual obligatory gift — “Does Dad really need this set of golf club covers with the hot-pink furry yarn balls on top?” “Will Dad really wear this yellow plastic necktie with a beach scene enclosure of real sand and water? Give Dad a gift he’ll never forget. More than likely, a simple “I love you” and a card will be enough. Although a Playboy subscription really can’t hurt. How Fathers Day started Grace Golden Clayton may have been inspired by Anna Jarvis’ crusade to establish Mother’s Day; two months prior, Jarvis had held a celebration for her dead mother in Grafton, W.Va., a town about 15 miles away from Fairmont. After the success obtained by Jarvis with the promotion of Mother’s Day, the first observance of a “Father’s Day” was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father when, in December 1907, the mining disaster in nearby Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving around a thousand fatherless children. Clayton suggested her pastor, Robert Thomas Webb, honor those fathers. Father and daughter On June 19, 1910, a Father’s Day celebration was held in Spokane, Wash., at the YMCA by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909 at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. Several local clergymen accepted the idea, and on June 19, 1910, the first Father’s Day, “sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city.” Federal recognition A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Sen. Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents.” In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made permanent by President Richard Nixon. It’s Chi Chi’s vision By CHARLES DRAKE Boomerz Magazine It looks like a golf course. It functions like a golf course. It even makes money like a golf course. But what it does best is create an academic environment to prevent at-risk youngsters in grades 4 through 8 from falling into an unproductive lifetime, dropping out of school without a highschool diploma. Here, they can catch up and learn to excel. The Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy is celebrating 35 years of operations this year. Its campus is located on McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater. The academy was the brain-child of Bill Hayes, a former golfer, stockbroker and juvenile detention officer, Rodriguez and Bob James, the founder of Raymond James Financial. Rodriguez visited a detention center where he gave a mini golf clinic and spent some time with the kids. He and Hayes later talked about what they could do when the idea of the at-risk rescue program came up. “The foundation, the school and the work we do was an act of God,” Rodriguez said. “It goes back a long way. My father and mother were very good with us kids and our education. I was beginning to doubt myself and my purpose and seeing those kids succeed is the answer to my prayer.” From Rodriguez’s point of view, there isn’t much more important than education. “You can lose your money, you can have your citizenship taken away, but nobody can take your education and your diploma away from you.” he said. The Academy serves 95 students now, with the goal of helping youngsters receive their diploma. The partnership they’ve forged with Pinellas County Schools is where personalized attention and golf, which many believe parallel life, are creating pathways to success. The school, built in 1993, is a voluntary educational program for fourth- through eighth-grade students who have been performing below grade level. The students are motivated to learn through enhanced academic experiences in golf course management, marketing and other real-world business environments. Using the golf course and its business as a living classroom, that is what makes the academy unique among alternative education programs across the country. Its small-school atmosphere, small class sizes and individualized attention are served up in lavish proportions. Partnerships with the Boys & Girls Club, The First Tee of Clearwater and an active community-service program help the Academy fulfill its mission. Overall, the three programs are impacting more than 1,500 children each year. A sophomore at Dunedin High School, she said, “I have no idea where I would be academically or socially without this school. I will never forget what I learned at the Chi Chi Academy.” “Our board of directors is debating if we should expand our services through the 12th grade,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t know what the answer will be, but what- ever decision the board of directors makes will be the right one.” Cary Stiff, the foundation’s senior vice president and executive director, said BoomerzMagazine.com that over the next several months, directors have asked community and business leaders for their input on these educational choices then incorporate that into the future vision. While Chi Chi Rodriguez is an icon in golf, his true legacy are the successful young Americans who have benefited from the hard work and focus of the academy. Best known for his time between 1984 and 1999 reporting traffic on Q105 from the Bill Currie Ford courtesy van, Pat continues to have a multifaceted career in and out of the broadcast realm. NOTE: It looks like Pat will soon be going back to his broadcasting roots at a station near you. Stay tuned for further details. I first met Pat in the mid-70s when we both worked at the old WDAE downtown Tampa studios, at 101 Tampa St. They also had FM 101 at the time, now Mix 100.7. Pat was the janitor at the building and I was doing overnights while studying at USF. I ended up fired in a regime change and Pat ended up running the board overnight, and then became a fill-in on-air host. Prior to launching his on-air career, he had a rather fascinating life. He was born in Scranton, Pa., and grew to age 10 in the Poconos, were his father had a restaurant. When he was 10, his dad was convinced by friends to come enjoy the Florida lifestyle, so they moved to Lutz. Unfortunately, his ROGER P. SCHULMAN On the Media Beat father passed away and he had to leave Hillsborough High for a year to work at the Pantry Pride supermarket to support his mom and his three younger brothers and sister. He was known as the class clown, according to a classmate at Hillsborough High, and could be seen with sunglasses in the back of the classroom so the teacher couldn’t see his eyes were closed because he fell asleep from working all night at the grocery store. He managed to get back in school a year later and graduate a year late. He now gets invitations from both the classes of 1973 and 1974 for class reunions. Pat says he had always wanted to be a cop, so he knew he needed to get a high school diploma to be one, and that’s one of the main reasons he went back to graduate. He still wasn’t old enough to apply to the Tampa police department, so he took numerous jobs. He wanted initially to be a truck driver in the interim, so he went to the employment office and they called and said they had no truck driving jobs but there was a janitorial position at WDAE radio. He took that job, and his broadcasting career was born. He began assisting the legendary Al Ford and his sky patrol from Al’s old Tampa police airplane. Pat would be on the ground relaying reports. Then he got the Bill Currie Ford van job and relayed reports from the road and fixed flat tires and assisted at accidents. Scott Shannon of Q Zoo fame heard him and stole him away from WDAE and put him on the air as part of the Q Morning Zoo. He lasted till 1999 when an ownership change ended his career there. A day later, he started at Radio Disney, where he stayed till he retired from that job in 2011. He taught many children to be kidcasters and do interviews and news stories on the radio. Some have gone on to have successful careers in broadcasting themselves from that experience. His number, if you need his services, is 813-625-1629. After Radio Disney, Pat became a Hillsborough school security officer at the child care center at Busch Boulevard and Florida Avenue — he says that’s the worst job he ever had. He worked with a partner on a barbecue trailer for a while till his partner sold it. He then got a job with court security, checking people in at the Hillsborough County Courthouse. Then he got a wiener stand that he takes to various events (you can call him for that too). His eldest daughter, Kate, from a previous marriage, is doing very well in Texas selling the Da Vinci surgery system to hospitals. His son, Austin, from his present marriage to Amy, is graduating from high school this month and is joining the U.S. Air Force and plans to attend USF thru Air Force education prorams and become an officer. Meanwhile, he will be in security forces at MacDill Air Force Base. Austin is aiming high. He hopes to succeed to such an extent in the Air Force that he can run for the commander-in-chief’s job. Yes, Austin wants to be the president of the united states. Pat can frequently be seen holding court, playing music or testing the beverages at Vallarta’s Mexican Restaurant on Dale Mabry Highway — but stay tuned for the latest! Klein and Smith were discussing Grand Funk and great classic rock music when they hooked up with Beltz and Brad Mehring to originally form the band. Protect yourself from pet allergies North American Precis Syndicate According to The Humane Society, 62 percent of American households have at least one pet. Yet an estimated 31 million Americans are allergic to animals, including up to 30 percent of those who have asthma. For these people, congestion, sneezing, runny nose and other allergic symptoms occur whenever they are exposed to common household pets. Below are five common misconceptions about pet allergies. By knowing the truth about these myths, you can take action to live comfortably with the pets in your life. Myth 1: It’s only pet hair-especially cat hair-that causes allergies to flare up. Not true. Pet hair is a nuisance and causes allergies, as it contains saliva or other pet proteins. Allergic reactions to pets are actually caused by pet proteins contained in pet dander such as microscopic skin flakes, and also in saliva and urine. Overactive immune systems in those with allergies attack these otherwise harmless substances. Animals with more fur are more likely NAPS You and your pets can get along better if you take steps to stop their dander from aggravating your allergies. to carry other allergens such as pet dander and dust, according to the American Lung Association. Myth 2: Continuous exposure to animals will eventually desensitize you. Not only is this not true, but in some cases, the opposite is true. If you have a confirmed allergy to animals, whether you are a child or adult, it usually will not get better through increasing exposure. In Keep your skin safe from sun, smoke, chemicals fact, it may get worse. Myth 3: If you just get the right breed of dog/cat/etc., you won’t have allergy problems. Not true. All cat and dog breeds produce dander. However, some breeds are believed to be better for allergy sufferers than other breeds. Typically, the best breeds are those that shed the least fur and/or are the most frequently bathed. Experience That Counts! Serving the East Lake Area Since 1984 813.855.5986 North American Precis Syndicate Your skin is responsible for protecting you from the world around you. In return, you can protect it from the ravages of sun, smoke and chemicals. Here are hints on how: 1. Shun the sun. To reduce your risk of excess ultraviolet exposure-which can lead to premature aging, wrinkles and dry skintry to avoid the midday sun and wear a sun protection factor of at least 15 whenever you do go out, anytime, any season, any weather. 2. Don’t smoke. In addition to other issues, smoking (and second-hand smoke) is bad for your skin and can lead to wrinkles. 3. Drink (filtered water) to your health. You can keep yourself well hydrated from the inside out if you get your eight glasses a day. It doesn’t all have to be water, but keep alcohol and sugary soft drinks to a minimum. 4. Eat right. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can knock out free radicals that damage the skin. Broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, oats, kiwi, pomegranates and blueberries are some of the most antioxidant-rich choices you can make. Watch your salt intake, since sodium dries out the skin. 5. Exercise your right to good skin. Those who are strong and physically fit have a wealth of lean muscle tone that helps prevent sagging skin and wrinkles. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day and be as active as you can-taking the Myth 4: Small animals are not a problem for allergies. Wrong. Hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and other warm-blooded mammals can also trigger asthma and allergies in people with allergies to animal dander, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Birds are also a major problem for many allergy sufferers, as birds release dander into the air through activities such as cleaning their feathers, flapping their wings and flying. If you are allergic to animals but still want a pet, consider animals without dander like a fish, turtle or other reptile. Myth 5: Outside the home, you shouldn’t have pet allergy problems. Not necessarily. Because of their microscopic size and jagged shape, pet allergens easily stick to clothing and other fabrics and are carried to other locations. Animal dander-in sufficient levels to cause allergiescan be found in many public places such as the workplace, classrooms and hospitals. Those with severe allergies may also want to avoid the homes of family and friends who have the type of pet that irritates their allergies. 3906 Tampa Rd, Suite A (Corner of Tampa Rd & Bayview) *Walk-ins Welcome* NAPS Helping the skin you’re in stay young looking may be easier than you may realize. stairs instead of the elevator, walking the dog often, riding a bike instead of driving to the store. 6. Use a natural, anti-aging skin care product. Avoid chemical-laden skin creams; the chemicals and synthetic ingredients can do more harm than good. Skin care products made from 100 percent natural botanicals soothe even sensitive skin. For example, many women have found they can have softer, smoother, youngerlooking skin overnight, and dramatically diminished wrinkles, when they use Trilane Anti-Aging Moisturizer with Squalane. It brings together two extraordinary botanicals-ultrahydrating olive squalane and firming jojoba esters-into one pure, powerful, all-natural formula. Haggerty, 11, suffers with a life-threatening heart condition. Pineapples for Mary By DEBORAH BOSTOCK-KELLEY Boomerz Magazine Maybe the thief was hungry and stealing a little girl’s garden of pineapples was a desperate act to feed a rumbling belly. That’s what Mary Haggerty’s surrogate health provider Rusty Boles hopes was the reason why under the cloak of darkness, someone would deprive a very special 11-year-old girl from enjoying the fruit she nurtured in her garden. When she took interest in watching how pineapples grew, Rusty, founder of Crosswaver Christian Ministry, showed her how to tend a garden. Day after day, week after week, she watched her pineapples grow in anticipating of tasting literally the fruits of her labor. Boles promised after her return from All Children’s Hospital, they would reap the rewards of her patience. On Sunday night, the thief changed all that. “Someone might have thought they were just stealing a pineapple, but in fact, stress over this could kill this little girl,” explained Boles. “Although I tried to keep it positive, she was crying when I told her.” Mary suffers from a life-threatening heart condition. She had open heart surgery as an infant and has not grown properly since. She’s heading back to All Children’s Hospital for an MRI on her arteries. The doctors are worried if her arteries are strong enough to hold stitches. “The last time her arteries weren’t thick enough for surgery. If they burst, she dies,” explained Boles. “They said the only thing we can do is proper diet, vitamins and moderate exercise. I contacted every hospital all over Europe and America and they all said the same thing – pray and do what the cardiologist says. She could be walking across the playground and fall over dead. When the diagnosis came in six months ago, I had a real hard time accepting that. She’s tiny and the reason she’s tiny is she’s getting restricted blood flow.” Besides resurrecting the pineapple garden, Bowles’ goal is raise enough to send Mary and her family to Atlanta Aquarium for the family’s first vacation. Donations are being accepted at www.crosswaver. org. 18 The WriteOne Creative Services is a successful woman-owned, creative services company for the busy entrepreneur or small business that cannot justify hiring a full-time person or paying the inflated overhead of an outside ad agency. “When you hire me, you get me,” said Deborah Kelley, business Kelley founder. “Throughout the process, we work hand in hand, in-person and virtually to make your creative vision a reality.” Celebrating 10 years in February 2015, Kelley prides herself on exceeding her customer’s expectation. Her stellar industry reputation is apparent in being voted by her customers as LocalShops1 “Best Established Business” and AOL Patch Westchase’s Top 4 Finalist for “Best Customer Service.” “I’ve never paid for advertising,” said Kelley. “Customer referrals are the best advertising I could ask for.” Kelley has the ability to do everything for a small business. Instead of going to an ad agency for print work, a web company for a website, a social media business for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. and finally finding a decent copywriter for writing, working in only the most current software, Kelley combines years in journalism and advertising editorial copywriting with graphic design, web design and marketing in one experienced person, passionate and dedicated to your business. She is also a freelance reporter for the Tampa Tribune and Neighborhood News and Lifestyles Magazine. And it probably comes as no surprise - she also is publicity and public relations, an amateur photographer, a volunteer who takes show publicity photos at Carrollwood Players Theatre and transforms them into flyers and marquee posters. “There’s a saying - strangers are friends we just haven’t met yet,” said Kelley. “If you look at how many clients have become my friends, I can paraphrase that to ‘clients are friends that I just happen to work for.’ ” Kelley’s continued success is an example of where determination, dedication and an entrepreneurial spirit can lead. I played right wing for high school and some AAA travel hockey before realizing that the NHL wasn’t going to call. At 28, he started driving trucks and ultimately owned a small trucking firm and was making a living. The trucking business paid the bills. Change came following a divorce, where his heart wasn’t in the business any more; he and friends drove to Daytona for the 500, which led to a quick trip to Clearwater Beach. “I say my being here is just an accident,” he said. “I’d never been on this side of Florida and once I saw Clearwater Beach I decided that’s where I wanted to be.” DiFalco worked on Clearwater Beach for 15 years, where he started to work on artistic projects. “You know, sign lettering, painting surf boards, until I was asked to sculpt an 11-foot dolphin for the Dolphin Encounter cruise ship and the three-dimensional commercial art projects just started to come.” “It wasn’t easy. A lot of times, I was struggling, but I stuck with it and kept working on projects that continued to turn out well which led to the next project,” he says. He thinks his Iguana creation that rests on the rocks outside Jimmy’s Iguana at the Holiday Inn on Indian Rocks Beach is his signature piece. “It was pretty complicated. It’s 27 feet long. I started from a picture of an Iguana from the Internet and worked out the dimensions, built an internal frame and sculpted the exterior,” he said. “But the most complicated was a Cambodian figure because the sculpture had flowers in her hair and each one of those had to be fabricated so they matched. It took me longer than I planned.” The most surprising project was building the logos for MSNBC’s television coverage for the 2012 Republican and Democratic conventions. “They said they never get such work done outside of New York, but they arrived here in a bind, and gave me the job, which I accomplished in three days,” he said. Other projects include a huge sculpture of an octopus with sea creatures in its Photos courtesy Tony DiFalco Tony DiFalco considers his iguana sculpture, measuring 27 feet long and sitting outside Jimmy’s Iguana on Indian Rocks Beach, his signature piece. BELOW: In North Carolina, there’s a DiFalco octopus in a bucket. “Sometimes, in the middle of (a project), I wonder just what have I gotten myself into, but they all have turned out great.” — Tony DiFalco tentacles, which rests on top of a Wilmington, N.C., seafood restaurant. “It took four of us to carry just the head because it’s so big,” he said. “Every one of these projects have definitely stretched my ability,” he said. “Sometimes in the middle of them, I wonder just what have I gotten myself into, but they all have turned out great.” This phase of his artistic pursuits started slowly, the natural talent he showed as that eighth grader started to emerge. “Even my mother questions where all this art comes from,” he said. “I don’t know, but I love doing it.” He speaks proudly of being hired by the Home Shopping Network as part of a set building crew. “I was so surprised they hired me, but it is great and I can’t say enough about how well they’ve treated me.” He said. “I’ve since learned that the company seeks out and hires artists as a result they have some very talented people on available to them and it is impressive what we can do.” He’s taking some time now returning to Detroit to throw his skills and muscles behind a project building a television set for Peacemakers International a 20-year-old Detroit-based motorcycle, prison and drug recovery church mission that was important to him as a younger man. Pastor Steve Upsur and his brother Jeremiah are focused exclusively on bringing hurting individuals back into Detroit’s local maintain stream community through their unique Christian ministry. DiFalco heard they could use a refurbishing of their church oriented television production set. “I build sets and this is my chance to give back to my community.” he said. “Pastor Steve has been a mainstay in Detroit as he and his extensive network of disciples continue to reach out and bring people back into the working community that is constant and it is a pleasure to help him.” Find out more about Peacemakers International through their web site: https://peacemakersinternational.org BoomerzMagazine.com19 BOOMERZ MAGAZINE READERS SAY WHAT? It’s time now to get stocked up on everything you will need to see you through what we all hope will be a mild summer. Our pets will sense that daily thunderstorm long before we even realize one is coming. I’ve included a photo of some of the more popular remedies, that I know work amazingly. The capsules, pills or liquids taken internally are inexpensive and very effective. The sprays are also quite appropriate and work well. Thundershirts also work but a little bit more expensive. There are also plug in pheromones that work, however they can be quite costly, but you can buy refills. I’ve included some travel anxiety remedies just in case you have to move quickly because we never leave our pets behind. Remember that!! We are in a state that could possibly get weather that would make us have to leave our homes, especially if you’re close to the water or in a flood zone area. Please, please have a plan in place. Now is the time to sit down and decide where you will go, will your pet be able to go with you? If not, have arrangements made in advance. Make sure if you’re going to use a boarding facility or even a vet, find one that will be safe from rising waters. Get all your ducks in a row! Food, treats, supplements, medicines, favorite toys, water and food dishes, crates and anything else you know your pet will need during their stay away from home. It could be traumatic for your pet so make everything as normal as possible which is why it’s so important to surround them with their familiar items. Try to feed them at their normal time. Your pet is depending on you now more than ever to protect them and keep them safe. Don’t ever wait until the last minute if you’re supposed to evacuate. Do it on the first warning, not the last!! Don’t place emergency workers at risk to save you because you didn’t listen to Courtesy Donna Klenovich Three different supplements can make a world of difference in your pet’s health. evacuation warnings. Most will not allow you to bring your pet if they are there to rescue you. So leave when you’re told and take your pet or pets with you. MAKE YOUR LIST NOW! You might want to visit your favorite pet store (like BoomerzMagazine.com Munchies Natural Pet Foods) and pick up all you need for this coming summer! BoomerzMagazine.com Detroit brothers celebrate eatery’s first anniversary By DONNA KLENOVICH Boomerz Magazine I Photos by Tony DiFalcoBoomerz media Owners Mike and Jake have built the Tarpon Bar & Grill on North Pinellas Avenue in Tarpon Springs into a great gathering place. N. f it’s excellent food, great service and wonderful atmosphere you want, you simply must rush right over to Tarpon Bar and Grill at 1981 N. Pinellas Ave. in Tarpon Springs. You think I’m going to stop there? Not a chance! Mike and Jake, the owners of this great place, will be celebrating their first year at this location on June 13. Jake’s wife, Vera, worked at the restaurant at its former location, and in 2004 she found out the place was up for sale and in no uncertain terms told her husband he better buy it or else! The rest is history. Now let me get into the reason why the place is so successful. You won’t find a more diversified menu in any other restaurant. London Broil, Stuffed Pork Chops, Spinach Pie, Moussaka and Fruit Plates are just a few of the items on their menu. The foods are definitely for those of you that have a gourmet palate. Everything is made fresh daily including their soups and desserts. Oh did I just mention soup? Wow…Mike brought us out a bowl of their soup today, which was Chicken Dumpling. More than delicious. I know soups and this was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. They even make all their own bread. Make sure when you come you need to order the “real” baby back ribs with their own home-made Barbeque sauce. From hamburgers (5 or 9 oz.) and fries to a full dinner you will find it at this restaurant and as long as you order a drink you get a dessert with your meal. I would like to stress upon all that frequent this place — quality is never compromised. Even if it costs the owners a little more, they maintain a lower price with huge portions. Would like to just stop in for a little snack and a drink? Guess what? This place has a full bar! And a well-stocked one at that! Want 50 percent off one of their many appetizers? Just spend $5 on drinks and you’ve got it! There are six flat-screen TV’s throughout the bar and dining area so you won’t miss any sporting events. Tuesdays are “all you can eat crab legs” day, Wednesdays are “50 cent wings” day, Thursdays are karaoke, Fridays “Fish Days,” Saturdays are just plain “Busy Days” and Sundays are prime rib days. Did I miss a day? Let me tell you about the brand new day — Motown Mondays! Get two Detroit-style Coney Islands, crispy fries, and your choice of beer, soda, coffee or tea for $8 all day...
