MAY 2016 PAGE 3 “A day without laughter is a day wasted” - Charlie Chaplin Years ago, Memorial Day was called “Decoration Day”. Maybe it was because everyone decorated graves for family, Veteran’s or friends. When I was a child my family piled Iris and Peonies in buckets of water and put them in the truck of the car. Upon arrival of the cemetery other relatives were there for the same reason. We prayed at each gravesite and had even packed a lunch, had a family picnic. It was a simpler time but I still think of it as a remembrance. To Marilin...I just wanted to thank you for opening our minds to journalism. We saw how much there is to learn and yet when we wrote our experiences it was like being a writer. We had a lot to learn. I hope we can do it again. My mother gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person. She believed in me. Enjoy a few Mother’s Day jokes to make you smile... Why did the baby strawberry cry? Because his Mom was in a jam! What did the baby Egyptian say when he got lost? I want my Mummy! What did Mommy spider say to baby spider? You spend too much time on the web! Mother to her son: I am warning you, if you fall out of that tree and break both you legs, don’t come running to me! My Mother said: “You won’t amount to anything because you procrastinate.” I said: “Oh yea, just you wait”. Sunshine News Staff Elma M. Uhle C-2 RESPECT Poem Written By: Peter Russo D-3 In a world full of disrespect Let us become men of respect Let us learn to respect people’s rights And, let us learn to always act right. With the aim of respect in our sight We can learn to be men of right Learn to honor others with respect Because we ourselves expect respect. In a world that lacks respect Let us wipe away disrespect The world can become a better place When we learn to be men of respect. At At At At At At At 3 years 10 years 16 years 18 years 25 years 50 years 70 years “Mommy I love you” “Mom whatever” “Mom you’re so annoying” “I’m leaving this house “Mom you were right” “I don’t want to lose my Mom! “I would give up everything to have my Mom here with me” DREAMING Written August 9, 1944 One day as I lay upon my bed With pillows tucked about my head I dreamed of the ships beyond the sky And of the planes the pilots fly Also “subs” beneath the oceans' foam And the boys far-away from home. All these things touched my heart And made me feel far apart From all the servicemen galore Who are trying their best to restore Lasting peace and happiness For this whole wide world to bless. MAY 2016 PAGE 11 Wireless access to the Internet is now available at Cedarbrook-Allentown and Cedarbrook-Fountain Hill. Residents with wireless devices such as laptops, notebooks, tablets (Kindle, Nook, etc) may request access through their Social Worker or Therapeutic Recreation Aide. Our PC Specialist will assign a unique username and password, which must be kept confidential. Visitors may request access at the switchboard. Usernames and passwords for visitors will automatically expire after three days. Are you looking to drop off a payment for services at Cedarbrook Allentown after business hours or on the weekend? Financial Services now has a lock box located in the Main Lobby. Feel free to drop off payments anytime day or night. It’s official! On June 15, 2015 Cedarbrook launched its first official website, designed to inform Lehigh County residents - and the world at large - about the quality services and operations provided here. It also offers dropdowns for both Allentown and Fountain Hill locations, with directions, departmental listings and the newsletters, posted every month. On the home page are slider segments that promote the institution and that will change from time to time. A highlight of the front page is the “Ratings & Reviews” section at the bottom where Cedarbrook users can submit their opinions on the quality of services. Please visit the site often, and please let your family and friends know about it. www.cedarbrookseniorcare.com is copyrighted by Cedarbrook Nursing Homes. MAY 2016 PAGE 12 At Cedarbrook, we are able to witness the kindness shown to our fellow man every day. Our volunteers are a perfect example of the “paying it forward” lifestyle. As Albert Schweitzer, a French philosopher, said, “the purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” We are blessed to have such great volunteers. Volunteers Are Needed! We have openings at Fountain Hill and Allentown for these opportunities: In-house transporters for activities and appointments - weekdays and weekends. Special events Volunteers (Spring plant sale, car show, bazaar, etc.) Bingo game helpers Pinochle players Walmart shopping assistants Garden Helpers Assist residents - making, hand-crafted items (knitting, crocheting, weaving, etc.) Summer opportunities are available for high school students. Most volunteer shifts are just one or two hours long. Please call, Kerry Magliane, Volunteer Coordinator, Cedarbrook Nursing Homes, if you are interested in any of these opportunities and it will be my pleasure to discuss them with you. Dietitian’s Corner Program Have you been hearing a lot about diabetes lately? Diabetes and pre-diabetes are very common in the news lately as the incidence of these two conditions rise. What is diabetes? From the American Diabetes Association - it is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. When you eat your body breaks food down into glucose and sends it into the blood. Insulin then helps move the glucose from the blood into your cells. When glucose enters your cells it is either used as fuel for energy right away or stored for later use. In a person with diabetes, there is a MAY 2016 PAGE 17 problem with insulin. Types of diabetes include type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is where your body does not use insulin properly. this is called insulin resistance. At first the pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. Over time your pancreas isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose levels normal. Type 2 is treated with lifestyle changes, oral medication and insulin. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include history of hyperglycemia, pre-diabetes and or gestational diabetes; overweight or obesity; physical inactivity, genetics; family history; race and ethnicity; age; high blood pressure; abnormal cholesterol. What is the treatment for Type 2 diabetes? The two goals are to make sure you feel well day to day and to prevent or delay long -term health problems. The best way to reach those goals is by: taking medications, if your doctor prescribes them; planning your meals-choosing what, how much and when to eat; being physically active. How do I know if my treatment is working? You will monitor your A1c which will tell your average blood glucose for the past 2 to 3 months. Improvement or a normal range will show that your treatment is working. Diabetes is becoming more prevalent in our society as the previous risk factors seem to increase. By monitoring our health status, eating a balanced diet and participating in physical activity we can decrease our risk of developing diabetes. Your Dietitian’s Jackie & Deanna Next meeting will be on May 9, 2016 Thank you to everyone for your time and ideas. We hope to see you at our next meeting. Therefore, we would like to offer these tips to help you keep your money and valuables safe from loss or theft. Since you have access to the money in your account during normal business hours Monday through Friday, we suggest that you only withdraw the amount you need for immediate use. If you need larger sums of money for gifts or to reimburse your family members for purchases made on your behalf, we suggest that you contact Financial Services to arrange for payment by check. If you choose to keep money and valuables in your room, we highly recommend that you secure such items in the locked drawer of your bedside cabinet. Keep your key with you, or keep your key out of sight in a safe place. As soon as you realize that your money or property is missing, it is important to report it immediately to the Charge Nurse. Cedarbrook will not assume responsibility for replacing missing property kept by residents on their person or in their room. However, we will take action to investigate, and to try to recover your property if possible. Finally, we ask that you help us maintain a current inventory of your personal property. Any property that you purchase or receive during your stay should be added to your Valuables Received After Admission Form, including a description of the property. This information is essential when trying to locate missing items.
