AKC Pet Disaster Relief Rolls Out Help
for Pets in Bergen County, NJ
Bergen County is now equipped with a state-ofthe-art AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer that will be
available to dispatch to any disaster scenes that
need assistance sheltering pets. AKC Pet Disaster
Relief, a national program that is dedicated to
keeping pets and their owners safe in the aftermath
of natural or civil disasters, joined forces with the
New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs and several
national AKC breed clubs to present an emergency
trailer to officials from the Bergen County Animal
Response Team and the Bergen County Office of
Emergency Management in a ceremony held today.
The trailers house and deliver essential supplies
such as fans, lighting and generators; cleaning
supplies; maintenance items; and animal care
items including crates and carries, AKC Reunite
microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip
scanner as well as bowls, collars and leashes.
These supplies can be used as co-location shelters,
where people can evacuate
with their pets, as well as

President’s Message
JACK GRASSA
May 1st is no longer merely
May Day. It is National
Purebred Dog Day — a
national celebration of the
purpose-bred dog— and it
is growing bigger and better
every year. Started in 2013 by
Susi Szeremy, a Puli breeder/
owner/handler in Colorado,
to “celebrate the heritage,
Sharon Fremer
diversity and predictability
of the purebred dog” National Purebred Dog
Day (NPDD) has been embraced by dog fanciers
around the globe and is spreading the word that
“Each breed is a living legacy of the culture that
created it for a reason, each breed indelibly
etched in that culture’s history just as surely
as its music, art, and language.” NPDD is an
example of how we can promote the dogs we
Ramapo Kennel Club love and educate the public
about why the propaganda
Officers
being spread by Animal Rights
activists is misleading and
President
Sharon Fremer
untrue. To learn more about

NPDD, visit its website at:

Corresponding Secretary
Tilly with a synopsis of what

she covered that will be

published in a future Growl. I
Board of Directors
also asked her to provide us

with talking points so that

fancy. In turn, Barbara asked
that we provide her with
AKC Delegate

specific questions to address.

Ramapo Kennel Club GROWL •May 2016
If you would like to know how to effectively
counter a particular issue, please contact either
Tilly or me and we will get that question to
Barbara. The HSUS, ASPCA and PETA are not
going away. They will continue to erode our
rights to own and breed dogs (as well as other
pets.) We must all stand up to them and do our
part to prove them wrong.
Our 2016 Match Show will be held on Saturday,
June 4th, including Conformation, Obedience
and Rally. It will be held at Sunnybank, former
home of Albert Payson Terhune and his famous
Collies, on Route 202 in Wayne, NJ. This is our
third year at Sunnybank. It is a particularly
beautiful location for a match show, with lots
of shade and picnic tables. Bring lunch and
enjoy the company of your friends and dogs
in a historic setting. We will need volunteers
throughout the day — setting up conformation,
obedience and rally rings, taking entries,
stewarding and breaking everything down are
just a few jobs that need to be done. Come out
and help us ensure another successful match
show! This year’s chairman is Fred Hachtel.
For more information or to volunteer to help,
contact him at [email protected] or on his
cell at (201) 390-3461.
Our annual awards dinner will be held at
the Paris Inn on Alps Road in Wayne, NJ, on
Wednesday, June 8th. Lorraine Fennemore has
once again worked her magic and ensured we
will have a delicious meal. Elaine Barone has
done her usual excellent job putting together all
the awards. Many thanks to both these ladies
for their endless energy and enthusiasm as they
make these dinners so much fun for the club.
Please come to celebrate our members’ successes
while enjoying great company and good food. If
you would like to attend, please contact Lorraine
Fennemore at [email protected] or (973)
227-0945.

This resolution would officially designate May 1st
as National Purebred Dog Day (NPDD), highlighting
the crucial role that purebred dogs and breeders of
purebred dogs have played in United States history
and spotlighting the many ways purebred dogs have
served U.S. citizens as military working dogs, guide
and service dogs, search and rescue dogs and more.
“I’m pleased to sponsor this resolution which
recognizes the value of all dogs – but sets
aside a day to celebrate the unique, predictable
characteristics that enable purebred dogs to excel
in a wide range of areas–from military service, to
service animals for the disabled, to disease detection
and of course, as family pets,” said Senator Tillis.
National Purebred Dog Day was originally created
by Colorado fancier Susi Szeremy in 2013 as a way
to increase awareness and celebrate all of the
ways purebred dogs better our lives. Thousands of
breeders and dog owners from across the United
States celebrate purpose-bred dogs and the
predictability of breeds during NPDD on all social
media platforms.
“The American Kennel Club thanks Senator Tillis
for recognizing the importance of National Purebred
Dog Day,” said Dennis B. Sprung, AKC President and
CEO. “Purebred dogs faithfully assist us in many
important capacities and we greatly appreciate
the dedicated and responsible breeders that have
worked immensely hard to preserve and advance
their breeds and responsible dog ownership.”

from the Bred By Exhibitor Class to attain
their championship titles.
“Madison” received her champion title at the
young age of ten months. It took just eight
shows from the “Bred By Exhibitor” class, and
four “major” wins to attain her title. She also
had four “Group 1’s” and a “Best Puppy in

The third photo shows Brock and Madison
together. “This has to be my favorite,” Fred
explains. “Both Madison and Brock winning
