SPRIING FLING 2015
Commissioner LaMarca & Eileen LaMarca joined us & Commissioner
gave the go ahead to begin the egg hunt.
Over 3,000+ eggs were spread throughout the park early in the morning
of Saturday, March 28, 2015 for our annual neighborhood egg hunt! Hundreds of children were all smiles in anticipation of filling their baskets with
colorful eggs containing candy. Twelve lucky children won prizes for finding eggs with a golden ticket! In addition to prizes, children had hours of
fun climbing through the obstacle course and playing.
Once again, this event could not have been made possible without the help
and support of our community.
A gigantic THANK YOU to Juan Rodriguez and Noah Leon from Better
Homes Realty for their extremely generous donation of delicious candies!
A enormous THANKYOU to the student members of the National Junior
Honor Society from St. Coleman School for stuffing over 3,000+ eggs with
candy!
And, of course, a big HUG and thank you to our neighborhood board members and student volunteers that showed up early Saturday morning to
help set-up, clean-up, and run the event!
We are truly lucky to live in such an awesome neighborhood!

Your Fitness Goals and Routine – Choosing Your Path
By Brett Renner, Personal Trainer, NSCA-CSCS
I know that starting a new fitness regimen can be intimidating, especially
if you haven’t spent much time around a weight room - but with a few
helpful tips, hopefully you’ll feel a little more comfortable about starting
a weight training program. Making sure you have a good amount of lean
body mass is essential for weight loss, burning calories while you’re at rest,
and increasing your metabolism. This is the main reason I advocate muscle
building as an essential part of a workout program.
Weight training or muscle building may seem a daunting task to you now,
but in reality it can be fun, easy, time efficient, and create its own motivation for you over time. But hold on a minute, weight training doesn’t necessarily have to involve weights! With the right guidance and combination
of exercises, what I’m proposing here is that body weight exercises and
resistance band training can be just as effective as ‘weight training.’ For example, a simple bodyweight lunge is one of my favorite leg exercises to give
my clients, simply because it doesn’t require the body to overexert with any
additional weights, and it targets almost all of the muscles in the lower half
of the body. Yet another benefit to bodyweight exercises is that they come
with much less risk of injury than traditional weightlifting. The amount of
people I see performing exercises with improper form on a daily basis is
disheartening, which is why I recommend that if someone doesn’t have any
experience with resistance training exercise, they should start out with basic bodyweight exercises to minimize risk
of injury - in addition to getting the body acclimated to the stresses of weight training. Pushups or modified pushups
can also be used to work virtually all of the upper body muscles in addition to your abdominal and lower back muscles.
If you’re interested in training specific muscles, a simple resistance band can be used to perform various bicep curls,
tricep exercises, shoulder exercises and many more. In training your midsection, one of my favorites is a basic plank,
which simply requires you to support your body weight on your forearms and hold in the ideal position for a specified
amount of time.
I suppose my purpose here is to point out that you really have no excuse impeding you from getting yourself started
on toning your muscles, all you need is the motivation to begin and a couple of good bodyweight exercises to get your
muscles used to working again. This philosophy has been helpful to me in maintaining my own fitness, in addition to
keeping my joints safer from injury. Whether resuming training after some time away or engaging in a serious planned
fitness regimen for the first time in your life, avoiding early unnecessary setbacks due to injury should be a prime consideration in your choice of exercises. Resistance training does not have to mean weight training and choosing the best
band and bodyweight exercises to accomplish your initial goals can be easily accomplished. Whether band and bodyweight exercises are a stepping stone to other types of training, or a foundation on which you establish your routine
and expand, get started the way that feels best to you.
Remember not to fool yourself thinking you have to push weights to tone and grow. I can put you through a band and
bodyweight workout that will exert less stress on your body while providing all the results you are seeking from training. Challenge me to show you how easily you can achieve your goals utilizing the prescribed routine that is the most
comfortable for you.
For questions, guidance in choosing band and bodyweight exercises over weights, safety in your regimen, or to set
up your new prioritized sequenced fitness program, call me at The Fitness Clinic and let’s get started – (815) 994-1026.

THE COUNT dOWN TO SUMMER IS HERE - dR. KIM RABY
Summer time is a time to enjoy the outdoors with your family and children. It is also a great time to engage in activities
that make us feel like a kid again ourselves. The hustle and bustle of a busy life can take its toll on the most put together
of people. Summer time is the best opportunity to slow down and enjoy what south Florida has to offer. Here are a
few tips along the way…
drink Plenty of Water
The human body, on average, consists of 60% water. Therefore, your skin needs plenty of water during the summer
months, especially when you are out in the sun. Our bodies can very easily get dehydrated. Dehydrated skin leads to
an “aged” look. If you are feeling thirsty then you are already well into a dehydrated state. A drink with electrolytes is
a great addition to water during outside activities.
Stretch Your Muscles
Engaging in more activities means we may be using muscles that we haven’t used in weeks or months. When those
muscles are used in excess, the muscles create micro tears that need to be repaired. That is the foundation of the soreness we feel the day or two after activity. Create a habit of morning and evening stretching to elongate those muscles
and allow the muscle fibers to heal faster. This will aid in repair and prevent injury.
Eat Clean
There are so many reasons for wanting to eat healthy. Not only is it good for your overall health, but it also allows you to
feel better about yourself when you are walking around on the beach in that bathing suit. You don’t have to be extreme
in the changes you make to your diet to be effective. Simply increase fruits and vegetables at every meal. Make sure
you eat them first before you hit the french fries. Eventually, you will not only get fuller and not want the bad stuff, but
you will also start to feel so good that you won’t want to put those trans fats in your body after all.
Get Adjusted – of course
Increased outdoor activity has the potential to lead to
back and neck pain. Sometimes pain can be derived
from a pulled muscle. Sometimes pain can be caused by
a more serious condition that can be helped by a Chiropractor. No matter what, don’t ignore your aches and
pains because they are (or can be) early signs of a problem that may have a simple solution.

President’s Message
Dear Neighbors,
We had a good crowd at Spring Fling, hope you were able to join us. Lots of little children and 3000 colorful eggs, what
a sight to see. My thanks to all who helped to make this another memorable event. Enjoy the pictures.
We are working with Commissioner Roberts to get another meeting with the Executive Airport. If you attended the
last meeting, you know a request was made to have the FAA to attend a meeting and answer questions the Airport was
unable to answer. I do not have a confirmed date at this time but it will be announced on an email blast and the web
site. We do have your email address, right? When you join the Association, we ask for your email address, so hopefully
you included it.
If you haven’t seen the Habitat Gardens lately, I encourage you to drive by. We have a multitude of Monarch Butterflies
which are in such danger all over the country. When you are walking, and feel like pulling some weeds or picking up
trash, give me a call, I will join you.
The Neighborhood had a good showing at the St Patrick’s Day Parade, not as big as I would have liked but we were
noticed. It was fun and the City does a better job every year. The presentation in the Park was outstanding.
Our sincere thanks to Jim Demarest, who has been our Treasurer for seven years. My how time flies. Jim is resigning to
pursue other duties, we will miss him for he has kept us in good standing all these years.
A special thanks to CVS at the corner of Federal Highway & McNab Rd. for giving us a great deal on the eggs.
We welcome Lorraine Verano as our new Treasurer

Ask Lori…Parrish on Appraisal
Missed the Traditional Homestead Exemption Filing Deadline?
Dear Lori:
I understand the deadline to file for property tax exemptions was March 2, 2015. I was
out of town on a cruise and missed the March deadline. I was told by your office March
2 was not really a deadline at all? What is the real deadline to have my property tax
exemptions applied for 2015?
S.D, Pembroke Pines, FL (via email)
You still have time to file for your 2015 exemptions! The traditional filing period for
2015 Homestead and all other exemptions was March 3, 2014 through March 2, 2015. The
absolute deadline to “Late File” for any 2015 property tax exemption – if you missed the
March 2, 2015 timely filing deadline is September 18, 2015. State law (Sec 196.001(8), Fla.
Stat.) does not allow late filing for property tax exemptions after the September 18 late
filing deadline, regardless of any good cause reason for missing the late filing deadlines.
The Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office accepts late applications for 2015 Homestead, Senior, Disability, Widow/
Widower, Granny Flat, Portability, Non-Profit and all other exemptions until September 18, 2015. To qualify for a 2015
exemption, you must have owned the property and made it your primary residence on or before January 1, 2015.
You may also be eligible for Portability. Portability allows Homesteaded owners to transfer some or all of their Save Our
Homes (SOH) benefit from their old home to their new home. Your Portability amount is determined by the difference
between the “Just Value” and the “Assessed/SOH Value” of your previous property in the year of Homestead abandonment.
If you had a Florida Homestead Exemption in 2013 or 2014, gave up the exemption, and moved to a new Homestead by
January 1, 2015, you may be eligible for Portability. In order to receive your Portability for tax year 2015, you must file for
Homestead and complete a Portability application with our office by September 18, 2015.
There are several ways to complete your exemption application. You can apply online at www.bcpa.net, visit our office
at 115 S Andrews Ave., Room 111, in Fort Lauderdale, or you can apply at one of our many community outreach events
throughout the county. View our entire outreach calendar at www.bcpa.net/events.asp to find out when we will be in
your neighborhood. If you have any questions or need help with your tax exemption applications, please do not hesitate
to contact us at 954.357.6830.
Sincerely,
Lori Parrish, CFA

We are now in the heart of the school year when many exciting events take place,

action problems were remedied. If your school or organization would like more
information on this year’s assessments, call my office at 754-321-2003 to arrange an
informational presentation by the Student Assessment and Research Department.
The SAR Dept website also has an enormous amount of information, accessible at

Florida Department of Health in Broward County
Robert LaMendola
When children under age 4 died in Broward County over the past five years, unsafe sleep and drowning were the
biggest causes – claiming 97 of 205 young lives lost in that time. In response, the Children’s Services Council, the Florida
Department of Children and Families, Florida Department of Health and other agencies have launched a “Safer by 4”
campaign. Unveiled at a meeting of city and county officials, the campaign urges the public as well as police, firefighters,
paramedics and inspectors to watch more closely for life-endangering conditions in the home. “These tragedies were
completely preventable. Our goal is to eliminate all of them,” said Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of DOH-Broward.
Unsafe sleep – Children are safest when they sleep alone, on their backs, in a crib free of items. No blankets, pillows,
stuffed animals or bumper pads, Kim Gorsuch, DCF Circuit Community Development Administrator in Broward, told the
group. Parents should not sleep with baby in their arms, or co-sleep in any bed. Parents may enjoy the practice but it
is risky, Gorsuch said. Local governments can help by training first responders to educate parents about unsafe sleep
environments observed in the home, said Michelle Reese, Executive Director of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of
Broward.
Drowning – Children often die in the water without a sound, moments after slipping away unnoticed from a parent or
caretaker — more so in Broward, with 130,000 backyard pools and miles of waterways.
The best protection is an adult paying undivided attention to children, especially toddlers, said DOH-Broward Health
Educator Linda Olson. She helps coordinate the Water Safe Broward campaign.
Families should install four-sided fences around pools, alarms on the doors and safety devices on pool drains.
They should learn to swim, teach children to swim and learn CPR. Too often, Olson said, drowning children stayed in
the water until paramedics arrived because adults could not swim to get them out. Life or death may hinge on a few
seconds.
DOH-Broward is partnering with first responder agencies to train staff to seek out and recognize safety violations at
public pools and report them immediately to DOH-Broward, which is charge of inspections and enforcement.

Do I need to vaccinate my pet if they are strictly indoors?
It is a myth that cats and dogs that live indoors don’t need to be vaccinated against infectious diseases. While living an
indoor lifestyle may be safer overall than living outdoors, important infectious diseases can find pets anyway.
Rabies Vaccine-Rabies is a human health concern, not just an animal issue. Because rabies can be transmitted to
humans and is nearly universally fatal, Broward County has laws mandating rabies vaccination of all pets. Rabies is most
commonly transmitted by a bite from an infected animal. Bats, skunks and raccoons are the most common source of
exposure. Regardless of legal requirements, maintaining regular rabies vaccination makes good sense. Even a strictly
indoor pet may sneak outside or a rabid bat finds its way inside. It is simply not worth the risk to your pet or human
family members.
Distemper Vaccine - Canine Distemper virus and Feline Distemper virus and the other components known as the
distemper complex are diseases against which veterinarians vaccinate their patients. Vaccination against the distemper
complex is important because these diseases can be deadly. They are hardy viruses that can be brought into the home
on inanimate objects like clothes and shoes. Because transmission does not require direct contact with another pet,
indoor only pets can be exposed and become ill if they are not appropriately vaccinated.
Canine Bordetella Vaccine - Canine Bordetella vaccine is commonly known as the “kennel cough” vaccine. Many wish to
decline this vaccination because they do not board their pet. Other scenarios that can put your dog at risk are visiting
the groomer, dog park or simply going on a neighborhood walk. Another is the risk posed by a guest dog, should a
family member come for a visit.
Feline Leukemia Vaccine - The current recommendation
is vaccinating all kittens against Leukemia following
a negative blood test. This vaccination should have
a booster vaccine at the one year anniversary. At
that time you can have a discussion about your cat’s
lifestyle. It is important to remember that if your pet
were to escape or you were to bring a new cat into the
home, your pet may be exposed to the virus.

Also be aware of individuals targeting the elderly, usually thinking they are alone in the home. The scam could be anything,
but most recently have been pest control, seawall inspection or county survey process. They lure the alone individual
outside to look at what they are there to do while another individual enters the house and robs the homeowner. Please
be safe!

A NOTE FROM LINDA NUGENT, PET REGISTRAR
I thought I would give you all an update on the Community Cat activity in the neighborhood. I have been trapping since
the beginning of January. So far we have trapped 3 females, 3 males and all have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated,
and returned to the street. Three have come from 61st Court, 1 from the end of 22nd Avenue, 1 from NE 21st Way, and
1 from NE 68th Street.
Just to give you an idea of what that means, the average female Community Cat will give birth to between 12 and 15
kittens a year and the average Tom will seek out 40 mates in a year. No matter how you do the math that is a lot of
unwanted cats.
From the article in the past newsletters, I have been contacted by a resident of Imperial Point Gardens that is seeing free
living cats. This week I will do waiting and watching to see if I can figure out what is going on at that end of 22nd Way.
I know we have at least two more cats on 61st Court, one more on 21st Way, one more on 22nd Avenue and one more
in the alley behind the library.
Want to help? Trapping and donations for spay/neuter are extremely appreciated. Linda Nugent

HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM BRING HEALTHY EATING
TO UPTOWN FORT LAUDERDALE
Recently, Jonathan and Jackie Goldberg introduced Uptown Fort Lauderdale to Saladworks, a fast-casual restaurant providing
healthy dining alternatives to area residents and businesses. Upon moving to South Florida from New Jersey, Jonathan and
Jackie, along with their two children, wanted to place concentration on year-round healthy meal choices. While searching
for options to fit the entire family’s food needs, the young couple remembered one of their favorite restaurants from the
Northeast that caters to gluten free, dairy free and vegan diets. They spoke with close friends about bringing the restaurant’s
commitment to fresh, local produce and quality ingredients to Uptown Fort Lauderdale and instantly made the decision to
turn a dream into reality.
Jonathan works as a successful businessman in the automobile industry while Jackie, with a vast knowledge of customer
service, operates the restaurant. Because of Saladworks’ unique dining options, the restaurant is a perfect fit for our Uptown
community, catering to people with on the go, healthy lifestyles.
Saladworks is the nation’s first and largest fresh-tossed salad franchise, boasting a unique restaurant concept. The restaurant
gives healthy consumers the opportunity to choose from pre-determined “Signature Salads” or build custom entrée-sized
salads by choosing from over 60 garden-fresh ingredients that are chopped crisp, in-house every morning. The restaurant
also offers yummy soups, custom sandwiches, wraps and paninis. Saladworks Fort Lauderdale, owned and operated by the

FAA Opens New Tower at Executive Airport
by John P. “Jack” Seiler, Mayor
Project Enhances Safety and Drives Economic Growth!
The City of Fort Lauderdale recently joined with officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to officially open a new $16.4 million state-of-the-art air traffic control
tower at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE).
The new FAA Air Traffic Control Tower will improve safety, enhance aircraft operations,
and incorporate advanced technology to maximize resources and efficiencies. Equipped
with the latest radar, communications, and weather technology, the tower will enable air
traffic controllers to continue to provide the safest most efficient service to flights arriving and departing from Executive Airport.
The new facility features a 117-foot tall air traffic control tower topped by a 525 square
foot tower cab. A 7,200 square foot single story base building houses training rooms, administrative offices, and equipment storage.
The project represents a major investment by the FAA to strengthen aviation facilities,
modernize transportation infrastructure, and help Executive Airport maintain its competitive edge in the marketplace. And it couldn’t come at a better time, as Executive Airport continues to strengthen
its position as a powerful economic engine that makes significant contributions to the financial health of our City.
John P. “Jack” Seiler, Mayor
First and foremost, the Executive Airport is self-sustaining. No local property tax dollars go toward its operations,
maintenance or improvements. The airport generates approximately $7 million in annual revenue from land leases
and fuel fees. In addition, Executive Airport and its tenants pay approximately $4 million in ad valorem property taxes
each year, making them one of the City’s largest taxpayers.
From an economic impact standpoint, a recent study conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation’s Aviation Office revealed that Executive Airport is part of an aviation industry that contributes $114 billion annually to
Florida’s economy.
According to the report, Executive Airport accounts for more than $360 million in direct economic impact, $105 million
in indirect impact, and $348 million in induced impact, while the airport’s economic activity supports more than 5,000
jobs with an annual payroll of $176 million.
Executive Airport’s total contribution to our local economy surpasses $815 million, which makes it the number one
general aviation airport in Florida in terms of total economic output.
The new FAA Air Traffic Control Tower will help solidify Executive Airport’s position as a catalyst for further economic
development, job growth, and business attraction in the City of Fort Lauderdale and throughout South Florida.
We would like to thank the FAA for their innovative leadership and focus on increasing efficiency, and congratulate
them on the completion of this state-of-the-art tower. It is an outstanding example of how two public agencies can
work together to accomplish a project that will contribute significantly to the progress and advancement of our City,
while making Fort Lauderdale and even better place to live, work, play, visit and raise a family.

COMMISSIONER BR
NOISE CONCERNS:
WORKING TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACTS OF SEASONAL AIR TRAFFIC: During winter months,
from November through April, seasonal air traffic can increase significantly at Fort
Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE). This time of year is also when neighbors like to
save energy by turning off their air conditioners and opening their windows, which
makes aircraft noise more noticeable. The City would like to remind neighbors that
we are aware of the potential increase in noise that season air travel may have on our
neighbors. As a result, the Noise Abatement Office distributes notices and contacts
aircraft operators to remind them of the program’s guidelines to help lessen aircraft
noise that may occur in neighborhoods during this time. To report excessively loud
aircraft you may do so by calling FXE’s Noise Abatement Hotline at 954-828-6666 24-hours
a day, seven days a week. Also, in the near future we will set a neighbor meeting with
our City staff and FAA officials to discuss this issue.
REPORTING TRAIN NOISE 850-414-4500 Many people have called to report that the train
horns have gotten louder. Our staff spoke with the FDOT Rail Office who stated that
when individuals call they should have the following information for follow up: which
track the train is using – FEC (East-railroad tracks along Dixie Highway) or TriRail/CSX (West-railroad tracks along I-95);
which train is causing the noise (cargo train or TriRail); the date/time and travelling northbound or southbound. If the
noise is late at night or early morning so that you are not observing, just call with date/time/approximate location.
We hope this helps. Transportation officials are investigating the matter. If you would like a copy of City Manager Lee
Feldman’s memorandum regarding this issue, please let me know and I can email it to you.
TECNOLOGY:
ENHANCED ONLINE NEIGHBOR RESOURCE: The City is continually trying to expand online services for our neighbors to
promote an informed and engaged community. We are proud to announce the release of the new Property Reporter.
Formerly known as the Property Information Reporter, this enhanced tool features a modern interface, is mobilefriendly, and provides access to more information than the previous version. The upgraded version provides access to
Public Works First Responder crews, FEMA Flood Zones, property tax assessments and aerial or topography maps. And,
you can still use the Property Reporter to look up neighborhoods, Commission Districts and sanitation schedules. We
invite you to explore the Property Reporter today. HTTP://gis.fortlauderdale.gov/propertyreporter/
LEWIS LANDING: As a City, we are committed to protecting, preserving, and enhancing our green space. This commitment
was echoed by our neighbors during our citywide Visioning process when they identified expanding parks and green
space, developing unique and inviting gathering places, and creating active healthy lifestyles, as key priorities for the
future of Fort Lauderdale. On January 24th, we took another step toward fulfilling this shared Vision when we opened
Lewis Landing, our newest City Park. Located at 630 NW 9th Avenue, the 1.3-acre property is situated on the south bank
of the New River in the Tarpon River neighborhood. The park features a pavilion, walking path, boat dock, benches and
picnic tables. As part of the grand opening ceremony, a plaque was unveiled dedicated to Surles and Frankee Lewis, the
first permanent non-native residents of our area who arrived here in 1792. In addition, award-winning sculptor Nilda
Comas unveiled an original commissioned statute of a Tequesta Indian, which proudly stands atop a five foot base near
the park’s entrance. The bronze sculpture was created as a tribute to the Tequestas, Fort Lauderdale’s first inhabitants
whom historians believe lived on the park property from approximately 800 - 1200 AD. If you have an opportunity, please
stop by Lewis Landing. It is one of our City’s most picturesque parks and a place filled with a fascinating history dating
back centuries!
BICYCLE FRIENDLY AMERICA PROGRAM: As part of the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly America
program, representatives from the League, Broward County, Florida Department of Transportation, Broward B-cycle,
Neighborhoods, and the City’s Parks and Recreation, Police, Public Works, and Transportation and Mobility Departments
joined together to discuss best practices for improving bicycling conditions in our City. The meeting focused on
educating neighbors on bike safety, encouraging more bicycling, and also included a group ride around Fort Lauderdale
to assess the City’s biking infrastructure and the challenges bicyclists face. The League will now provide the City with a
Bicycle Friendly Community Report Card and an action plan that identifies priorities that will have the greatest impact
on helping us become a safer, more comfortable bicycle community.
PROJECT ASSESSMENTS: In order to better assess, prioritize and finance major infrastructure and capital improvements,
your City has evaluated several areas of concern. To keep our neighbors informed of that process which has been
ongoing for several years, we will introduce a series of reports over the course of our next newsletters.
-BRIDGE MASTER PLAN: In an effort to develop a Comprehensive Bridge Master Plan and to identify funding needs,
on July 1, 2014, the City Commission approved the finalized agreement between the City and TranSystems to begin
the inspection, evaluation and documentation of the 46 roadway bridges identified for the study. Five City owned
bridges were not included in this study because they are currently being replaced by the FDOT. On November 17,
24

2014, TranSystems submitted a comprehensive bridge assessment plan, outlining the conditions of the 46 bridges and
recommending a repair and replacement schedule. These recommendations are based on bridge deficiencies which
are broken into six categories: concrete pile deterioration; deteriorated beam concrete superstructure; concrete
delamination with exposed reinforcement; concrete delamination with non-exposed reinforcement; expansion joint
deterioration; and non-compliance functionally obsolete. Based on the findings, TranSystems has provided both short
term and long term recommendations. Short term recommendations are meant to address minor structural issues
this year which, if unaddressed, will result in additional structural damage to the bridge. Short term repairs have been
recommended for seven bridges at a total of $86,000. Long term, to be completed over the course of the next 20 years,
in five year increments, fall into two categories: repair: significant structural repairs intended to extend the service
life of the bridge over 20 years; and replacement: if necessary repairs cannot extend the service life of the bridge over
20 years, the bridge will be demolished and replaced. Long term repairs have been recommended for 25 bridges and
replacement has been recommended for 17 bridges at a total cost of $35,136,308. Considering the short and long term
recommendations for the initial five years of the master plan, 19 bridges have been identified for repair and two for
replacement at a total cost of $4,152,600. Currently, $5,747,741 has been included in the Community Investment Plan
(CIP) for bridge repair and replacement for Fiscal Years 2015-2019. As such, staff intends to move forward following the
schedule outlined by TranSystems.

Designing your retirement: the new reality
A new grandchild arrives. Your son moves across the country for his new job. The family
home requires more maintenance than your travel-intensive lifestyle allows. A health
challenge arises. Whatever the reason, expenses that significantly affect your long-term
finances should trigger a meeting with your Financial Advisor.
What to expect from a financial checkup
At McKinnon Wealth Management, we can help you explore ways to support your new
plans and model how certain changes could affect your future income. And even if
starting a new business, for example, was part of your retirement plans all along, you’ll
want to work with your Financial Advisor to make sure the assumptions you made are
in line with the financial reality.
Of course, special circumstances aren’t the only reason to review your retirement
finances. The regular checkups with your Financial Advisor that were part of your
working years should continue during retirement — and may even be more important.
“You can verify that everything is going according to plan and adjust if it isn’t,” says
Donna Peterson, Senior Vice President in Retail Retirement at Wells Fargo. “Your Financial Advisor can also remind you about
upcoming deadlines. Is it time to start drawing Social Security, taking required minimum distributions or getting legacy plans
in order?”
You’ll also want to catch and manage any divergences from your retirement strategy that you might not otherwise have
noticed, particularly in expenses and investments. “Some retirees find that their spending increases in the early years of
retirement instead of decreasing as they try new activities,” Peterson notes.
Conversely, you may discover you have budgeted more than you are actually spending, which means you’re holding more
cash than you intended. At a checkup, your Financial Advisor can review your discretionary income allotment and portfolio
allocations with you. You may decide to reduce the amount you’re drawing from your portfolio, or take advantage of the
opportunity to boost your retirement lifestyle.
Your Financial Advisor will also ask about any life events that may affect your finances. That new granddaughter may prompt
not only changes to your estate plans but also an increase in your travel budget if her parents reside elsewhere — or you may
choose to purchase a home near the newly expanded family. All these decisions should be made in the context of your larger
retirement goals, but they may also involve practicalities that your Financial Advisor can help you think through. “Relocation
is not just about finding a new home and moving,” Peterson points out. “It also means finding everything from a new social
structure to new doctors.”
How often is ‘regularly’?
Regardless which approach you choose, talking with your Financial Advisor regularly can keep you confident about your
financial reality — whatever surprises retirement has in store.

Update from Your County Commissioner CHIP LAMARCA
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works Review Board Moves Deepening and Widening
Project Forward
Broward County Commissioners are applauding recent action by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers Civil Works Review Board that moves forward major plans to deepen and widen
Port Everglades’ channels and turning basin. Port Everglades has been working with the
Corps for more than 18 years on this project, designed to enable safe passage of deep
draft post-Panamax cargo ships, those too large to fit through today’s Panama Canal.
The project is anticipated to create an estimated 4,700 total construction jobs and nearly
1,500 permanent direct jobs locally. The estimated cost is $374 million which will be paid
with Port Everglades revenue generated through port user fees, federal appropriations
and state grants. No local tax dollars will be used for this project because Port Everglades
is a self-funded enterprise fund.
FLL Records Highest Passenger Traffic
2014 was a record year for Broward’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
(FLL) with 24.6 million passengers using the airport, an increase of more than one million
compared with 2013. FLL’s spike in passenger travel was attributed to new services and additional flights by its largest
domestic carriers JetBlue, Spirit, Delta and Silver. International traffic also increased 26 percent year over year, with more
than 4.6 million passengers using FLL. This increase is due in part to new service by Azul, Copa, Norwegian, TAME and Volaris
Airlines. The new runway, which opened in September, helped to eliminate delays that previously discouraged the launch of
new flights.
Transit Offers New Vehicles for Commuters and Paratransit Customers
Broward County Transit (BCT) is working to improve comfort, safety and the environment with new state-of-the-art vehicles
for commuters and paratransit customers. Transit introduced its cleaner propane-fueled paratransit vehicles in January
with seating for 10 passengers and room for up to three wheelchairs, digital security system with cameras, and adjustable
temperature controls. New 45-foot Motor Coach Industries buses are slated for operation in the spring and will feature highback seats with extra hip-to-knee space, Wi-Fi and LED reading lights, A/C vents, electrical outlets and USB ports at each seat.
These buses will be used for the 95 Express Service routes from Southwest Broward to destinations in Miami-Dade County.
County Targets New Businesses with Incentive Funding
The County is offering incentive funds for Qualified Targeted Industries looking to expand operations and create more jobs in
Broward. Potential businesses will receive varying amounts of funds from the County depending on the level of expansion,
and may qualify for additional funds from the city in which they plan to expand, and from the State. The County’s Office
of Economic and Small Business Development has approved two new projects under the Qualified Targeted Incentive Tax
Refund Program
Broward County Signs Agreement for First FPL Community-based Solar Installation Broward is the first location in Florida
to sign an agreement with Florida Power & Light (FPL) for installation of a solar photovoltaic system funded by FPL’s new
Voluntary Community-based Solar Pilot Partnership Program. The installation has the potential to generate over 140,000
kilowatt hours of electricity annually. In so doing, it will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by over
100 metric tons of carbon dioxide supporting the County’s commitment to a 20 percent renewable energy usage goal and
supporting the regional goal to achieve, by 2050, an 82 percent reduction in regional greenhouse gas emissions.
Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Welcomes and Encourages Donations
Your generosity will help support our numerous programs and services such as adoptions, behavioral training, and
enhancements to medical equipment in our clinics and improvement and expansion to our shelters. More importantly, your
support will to save the lives of many homeless dogs and cats.
Visit broward.org/animal to find information and photos of animals that are currently available for adoption. There is also
information on providing temporary foster care for animals that are too young to adopt or have special needs. If you find
that adoption or foster care isn’t for you, please consider volunteering, where you will have the unique opportunity to help
the shelter dog and cats.
Water Matters Day Matters March 14th
“Celebrating Our Centennial” is the theme of the 13th Annual Broward Water Matters Day on Saturday, March 14th from
9AM to 3PM at Tree Tops Park in Davie. This year’s free event is part of the County’s Centennial celebration, Broward 100
- Celebrating the Art of Community. At Water Matters Day, residents can learn about local and regional water resources,
how water is managed and protected, and how Broward is planning for future water needs. Over 45 educational exhibits

City of Fort Lauderdale Receives Southeast Florida
Smart Growth Partnership Overall Excellence Award
The City of Fort Lauderdale has been named the winner of the Southeast
Florida Smart Growth Partnership’s (SGP) Overall Excellence Award for
“Connecting the Blocks (CTB),” an initiative aimed at creating a more
walkable, bikeable, fully connected, sustainable city. The Overall Excellence
Award is the highest award presented by the SGP and recognizes
outstanding, comprehensive, integrated, and impactful smart growth
approaches across multiple levels, including neighborhoods, corridors,
city, county, and regional levels. Fort Lauderdale accepted the award
during the recent 2014 Smart Growth Excellence Awards event that took
place at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum.
“The City is truly honored to be recognized for our leadership, vision, and
commitment to innovative mobility solutions,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor
John P. “Jack” Seiler. “The award validates our strategic comprehensive
approach to fulfilling the priorities encompassed in our Citywide Vision
and Strategic Plans to enhance connectivity, promote pedestrian safety,
encourage alternative modes of transportation, and make our streets
safer and more accessible for everyone. I commend our Transportation
and Mobility Department for their outstanding efforts in moving our City
forward.”
Connecting the Blocks is a long-term, multimodal plan that is
supplemented through grants and partnerships with local, state, and
federal organizations. The City is implementing this program through a variety of initiatives. The five-year Downtown
Walkability Community Investment Project dedicates $500,000 per year to Wayfinding, pedestrian plazas, and complete
streets projects that support numerous transportation initiatives, including the upcoming Wave Streetcar. In addition,
more than $500,000 in pedestrian and bicycle improvements will be implemented through private development projects.
Projects completed to date as part of the CTB program include painting three intersections on E. Las Olas Boulevard,
installing several streetscape improvement projects, and adding more than 80 bike racks and several bike lanes
throughout the City.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE GEORGE MORAITIS
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It’s that time of year again when the sun shines a little longer, breezes roll in from the
Atlantic, and a need wells up in us to escape the routines of life and head outdoors! For
me, there’s just no place quite as beautiful and relaxing as the beach. Now some of you
may be thinking that our beaches are usually overrun during this time of year by spring
breakers seeking sun and fun. But this year Spring Break stretched from February 23rd
through April 10th, so those who are looking for a day trip to the beach or an evening
stroll along the coast will now find plenty of sand and surf to go around.
Many of you may know that erosion is affecting our beaches. Of Florida’s 825 miles of
sandy beaches, over 485 miles of them are experiencing erosion. About 387 miles have
experienced critical erosion, which poses a threat to our state’s recreational, cultural,
and environmental interests.
Over the past two years the state has allocated over 7 million dollars to the renourishment
of beaches in Broward County. We have learned that adding the right quantities of sand
to the eroded beach can effectively replace what’s been lost and improve the life of our beaches. But our task is not finished!
With the 2015 Legislative Session underway, I am excited to share with you that this year we will be requesting an additional
3 million dollars. Tourism remains a substantial part of our local and state economies and studies have shown that the
majority of tourists come to enjoy our world-class beaches. For this reason and to protect the property values in our coastal
community, it will be a top priority of mine to work towards ensuring we have adequate funding for beach renourishment
projects.
In addition to this I will be working on solving the problem of vessels anchoring overnight in the vicinity of private residences,
giving local governments greater flexibility to regulate vacation rentals, bringing parity to our tax code and addressing the
ongoing needs of our condominium and neighborhood association residents. Our state leadership understands how vitally
important Florida’s natural resources are to our region, and we welcome your feedback as we consider ways to improve our
great state. It remains my privilege to work together with you as your representative to improve our community and build
a better future. I hope to see you next time I’m at the beach!
It remains my privilege to represent you and our district in Tallahassee. God bless each of you and the United States of
America.
Sincerely, George Moraitis

Congress Woman Lois Frankel
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22) today voted in favor of the
bipartisan Passenger Rail Reform and Investment Act, which passed the House 316-101.
The bill authorizes $150 million for railroad safety programs, a provision pushed by Frankel
in the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee. Earlier in the day, Frankel took to
the House floor to champion this bill that improves rail safety in our communities, invests
in our infrastructure, and strengthens our economy. Click here to watch her full remarks.
“With freight and passenger traffic growing, we need improved safety and other mitigation
efforts to protect our communities,” said Frankel. “Transportation moves our economy and
this bill allows it to be done safely and efficiently in South Florida and across the nation.”
Railways have a multibillion dollar impact on Florida’s economy. In South Florida, port
expansions, growing Tri-Rail service, and the construction of All Aboard Florida will increase
freight and passenger train traffic. In anticipation, local stakeholders have been calling for
measures to reduce train noise, increase safety, and improve traffic coordination.
The legislation authorizes $150 million per year through the Rail Line Relocation and
Improvement Grant Program to help state and local governments upgrade safety features at grade crossings and improve
traffic coordination to prevent accidents and ease congestion. Eligible projects include warning lights, stop signs, traffic light
coordination, and four quadrant gates. Both Broward and Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organizations plan to apply for
this grant program

Turtle Season
The Florida coast is the second most popular nesting
area in the world for Loggerhead Turtles. About six weeks
after females make their nests in the sand, hatchlings
make their way to the ocean using the reflection of the
moon on the water as a guide. Unfortunately, these
hatchlings can become disoriented by artificial light.
The City of Fort Lauderdale is committed to protecting
endangered sea turtles on the beach and seeks to reduce
the impact of artificial lighting during turtle season, from
March through October. During the 2014 season, 924 sea
turtle nests were identified on Fort Lauderdale Beach
and 36,792 hatchlings reached the ocean.
