Commodore’s Corner
I swore that I’d never join a yacht club. My friends and I used to
hang out at the old (long burned down) oyster house on the Warren
River. In the summer, there were 3 old men (Joe Blue Eyes, Leo, and
Jigger) who would set up an “outpost” camp and we’d sometimes
hang with them while they smoked, drank cheap wine and told
stories. They taught us how to catch choggies and tautog…and
would always challenge us to do things like jump off the roof of the
building, jump of the Warren-Barrington bridge when the tide was
roaring out, swim across the river, or run through the Wharf Tavern,
run up the stairs, and jump off the crow’s nest into the river…of
course we met every challenge and even invented our own.
We all had our old wooden skiffs that we would tie up anywhere we
please and spent most of our summer days on the river. We used to
get a kick out of standing up on pilings, bending over, mooning the
yachties as they’d sail by and then jumping off the piling into the
water. The yacht club folks lived in “a different world” and we didn’t
want to be there. Sometimes we’d swim over to Barrington and
invade the beaches but always stayed below the high tide mark so no
one could kick us off
When I was in college, I traded a Corvair and a Beetle Cat for a “big boat”…an 18’ Cape Cod Knockabout with a mooring in Bristol
Harbor. I had always kept previous boats on home made moorings that were tossed in the Warren
River and we would swim out to our boats without a 2nd thought. Bristol presented a new
challenge. The mooring was near the yacht club, and I wasn’t a yachtie. We solved that problem
by sneaking on to BYC property or the house next door, swimming out to the boat, and swimming
back at the end of the sail. This worked OK for a couple of years but I was getting older and
slightly more mature. I had a real job and was thinking of getting married.
As luck would have it, BYC member Bob Westlake asked me to race with him on his Pearson
Commander at the yacht club. I did and immediately loved it. It was great going back to the bar
after a race and I soon found out that these yachties that I had thought were stuffy, were a lot of fun
and were as normal, or no nuttier than I was. I soon asked Bob and Jim Dollins to sponsor me,
handed Bernie (the steward) $400.00 and all of a sudden I was one of them.
I was welcomed by some of the old timers (Charlie Walsh, Fabe Saxe, Bob Millard) and have
continued to meet and befriend some of the nicest people I’ve ever known. I now believe that we
yachties are really not what I had expected us to be.
I have enjoyed being your Commodore much more than I thought I would. It has been a real
hoot! I am… and we should all be grateful for the work that our Executive Board, Committees,
and Volunteers do because we are strong, solvent, and I know that our “Boathouse on the Shore”
will continue to prosper. Bob Hamel, Commodore

Have you ever wondered how a particular boat
acquired it’s name ? I will ask that question each
month to a BYC member , and provide the answer
in this column.
Old Crow is a Mitchell 24 owned by Steve and
Susan Dolan. Why the name Old Crow?
The answer is best described in Steve’s own words:
Old Crow was discovered sitting peaceful in
Damariscotta
Cove in Maine a
year or so after I
began my search

was brought over to the US from England because of
her shallow draft and was ideal to tuck tightly into the
deep coves and inlets to photograph the marine life

The Finish Line
Ruth E. Souto
Chair, BYC Race Committee
The 2011 summer race season has ended. The winners have their awards, the Herb Farnum (with her still-shiny
new engine) is out of the water, the race marks are stored for the winter and the frantic sounds of the starting
line are just a faint echo of warmer days. It has been said that sailboat racers “eat, sleep and drink racing.”
Well, I know of another group that can make that claim as well… your BYC Race Committee.
In the off-season they charted, planned, organized and discussed the races. They hosted both a Race Rules
Seminar and a PHRF Seminar to help our sailors, as well as others from around the bay, prepare for the
upcoming season. As a committee on the water they ran, and assisted in running, many races in addition to our
regular Wednesday night Millard Series. In short, when this committee wasn’t out on the water running a race,
they were thinking about racing.
It has been my distinct pleasure to have chaired the Race Committee for the past two seasons. A more
dedicated group of volunteers, I have never seen. Giving up one night a week so that others could go sailing is
an extremely generous act, and one that I have come to have absolute respect for. As a racer, it is easy to forget
that in order for us to have a race “somebody” needs to organize it, and then be there to run it. At this time, I
would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the following “yellow-shirted” members of the Race
Committee who graciously donated their time and energy so that we could enjoy our Wednesday night, and
occasional weekend, races on the water: Margaret Bailey, Kathi Lengel, Allen Molvar, Linda Molvar, Dawne
Nordstrom, Hadley Rood, Deb Rude, Bill Stephens (PRO), Alan Storms, Mary Beth Taylor, Joe Wilbur, and
Bob Yaylaian.

LOOKING A H EA D!
Frostbite Sailing to Begin
Well the summer sailing season has finished, and the
winter sailing season is just beginning. On November 5th
racing is scheduled to begin again for the Penguin and
Laser Frostbite fleets right here in Bristol harbor. Come
join the fun and keep your skills sharp with these two
competitive classes. Racing will take place each
Saturday starting at 1:00PM (weather permitting) from
November through March.
This is a bring-your-own-boat event, but there are extra
Penguins for anyone interested in acquiring one. The
fleet (10-20 Lasers and 2-6 Penguins) aspires to promote
spirited, low stakes racing – protest are rare. They
usually get in at least 7 races. Novices are always
welcome and will be gently handled.
From the Grounds Committee
The grounds committee would like to
recognize all the little elves who have been so
helpful over the past two years. The new play
area, fenced in mooring area, fuel storage shed,
bulkhead projects have made our club a much
nicer place for all. Let the strive for excellence
in all aspects of our club continue to grow.
Anyone interested in more information, please contact
David Paine at: [email protected]
Thanks!
As I complete my last Mainsheet, I’d like to extend my
thanks to the Executive Committee members who have
been so generous with their time and effort to continue
providing articles and images for your Mainsheet. I send
special thanks to outgoing Commodore Bob Hamel who
has not only provided wonderful Commodore’s Corner
articles every month but has served as a last check

proofreader for each month’s edition. I also extend
thanks to Paul Sanroma for his excellent copy editing. I
will miss this work and look forward to passing it along
to the next Member-at-Large!

The Commodore’s Ball held on October 15 at the Bristol Yacht Club began with a
rousing start as each guest was greeted with a glass of champagne. The tables were
spread with dark blue clothes that aptly displayed centerpieces of a brandy snifter
filled with kosher salt and a large white candle surrounded by tiny silver shells. Silver branches highlighted this setting. Large silver chargers further enhanced the
table settings. Ed Mazza’s band had everyone dancing a lively step and the food
served by Russel Morin Catering was a gourmet delight. All in all, our
Commodore, Bob Hamel, looking very handsome in his tux, was aptly honored for a
great time in service to our club!!

And, the next day, BYC ended the 2011 season
with the traditional lowering of the colors. A
goodly number of officers and members were in
attendance.
