Dirt Road Anthem
Philly’s Premier Country Band Is Here!
By Krista Doran
It’s been slowly moving up
here for a while folks, yet us
Yankees didn’t even see it coming. It’s no longer a Southern
thing; Country music has
arrived and no one is doing it
better than Dirt Road Anthem!
OK, well I have to admit, (or
should I say submit?), that
Country music was never one
of my favorite genres, but it is
starting to grow on me. I am
sure many of our readers know
what I mean. I always thought
Country music was about getting drunk, being cheated on
and well....trucks. I love my
Rock and Roll, but even I have
to admit, there’s something
catchy about this music, and
Dirt Road Anthem is showing all
of us how fun it really can be!
DRA formed in the Spring of
2014 by Kevin Goodchild, Shon
Brooks and Jim Monaghan putting together the core, and then
bringing each playing in one by
one. I spoke to my good friend
and vocalist/guitarist, Brodi
Valos who explained, “Being
rock musicians, Kevin, Shon
and Jimmy knew they wanted
that modern sound, so the rest
of us immediately fit. Tracy is
our newest addition so it’s been
a sweet start as it keeps evolving.” The band plays Modern
Country or more specifically,
the genre known as “Sixth
Generation” which spans from
2000-present. They pepper in a
few popular classics here and
there, but the bulk of their repertoire only spans the last couple of years. Having five singers
DIGITAL GETDOWN ANNOUNCES
NEW STAGE SHOW AND
UPCOMING ORIGINAL MUSIC
Local cover
band, Digital
Getdown, is
excited to announce new
elements to
their already
captivating
stage show,
as well as
their first jump
into recording
original music.
Digital
Getdown has
spent the first part of 2015 putting together a whole new take
on their show and song selection. With the addition of Mike
and Jess in 2014, the band has
worked to enhance their stage
show and take things to the
next level. Fans can expect to
see a whole new theatrical experience at upcoming shows.
By adding new choreographed dances, a brand
new light show, and putting
additional focus on the strong
four-part harmonies this group
has to offer, DGD is excited to
show their audience an all-new
take on their already fastpaced show.
In addition to putting together a new stage show, the band
has been working tirelessly on
releasing their first EP of original music, written by Digital
Getdown and produced and
recorded by Joe Fanelli, Jr. of
Tuned in Music and Media.
This venture into original
music comes from the fact that
all 5 members of the band are
equally creative and share the
passion for not only playing,
but writing music.
Working so closely on this
has not only strengthened the
bonds within the band, but has
given each member a fresh
outlook on not only creating
original music, but on what
they can continue to bring to
the cover scene that will set
them apart from other bands.
Digital Getdown is excited to
bring their new show to Chickie’s and Pete’s on Roosevelt
Boulevard on Thursday, April
9th. This is an all ages event
sponsored by Out On The
Town Entertainment Guide.
You can find Digital Getdown
currently playing in venues up
and down the east coast. For
a list of their upcoming shows,
please visit their website at
www.digitalgetdown.com.
Digital Getdown is Danny
Nogowski (Lead Vocals), JC
Leahy (Lead Vocals/ Keyboards), Jessica Sherman
(Lead Vocals), Mike Gleisberg
(Lead Guitar/Vocals), and Dave
Dabek (Drums).

Club Life
Dance Music Returns - TKA Comes
To Philadelphia
Where can we go tonight and
dance? We are 35 to 45 years old and
want to be in a club setting and hear
good dance music-I hear this all the
time. Announcing an event that has
adults saying, finally I have a place
to go and enjoy dance music from
the 80’s and 90’s. Since I am in the
business of providing dance music, I
thought it would be fun to have a little
debate on what we think about which
decade produced the best dance
music? Was it the 70’s? This gave us
disco and some of the best classic
funk. This was perhaps the first time
that music was purposely produced
for the purpose of dancing. Maybe you
think it was the 80’s. We saw a more
refined disco, the ending of this type
of music. It also brought us new wave,
punk and big hair. Not to mention, my
choice for the biggest DJ friendly acts
ever Michael Jackson and Madonna.
The 90’s weren’t bad, either. This was
the decade that took actual DJing and
mixing to another level. The 90’s were
also responsible for bringing the masses back to the clubs. We saw a fusion
of club music and hip-hop acts such
as C&C Music Factory, Rob Base, Le
Click, Snap, Black Box and TKA laying
down some very heavy dance tracks.
Of course, there is the music of today,
the 2000’s. And, yes, we’ll include the
EDM of 2015. Early on in the 2000’s,
we weren’t getting much in the way of
good dance music, but things change.

Have You Heard The Eighties Are Coming Back?
by Donald Cugini (Special to OOT)
“Have you heard? Hey, have
you heard The Eighties are
Coming Back!“, rumbled Tommy
Conwell from center stage at the
Ardmore Music Hall Saturday
nite as he began a rapid fire
assault of his hits upon a happy,
thankful audience. The hot, dark
Main Line room is filled with
people laughing, smiling and
swaying to the music. Strangers having fun with the hottest
Philadelphia band in 25 years,
David Uosikkinen’s IN THE
POCKET The Essential Songs of
Philadelphia
In case you have been living
under a rock for the last couple
of years,” In The Pocket” is the
creation of legendary Hooter’s
drummer David Uosikkinen .
David is no simple beat-keeper.
He is the Groove Master General and Conductor of the Boogie
Woogie Cho Cho Train called
“In the Pocket”, and rightly so.
Because David is a rare drummer, like Johnny Dee, Jay Bruno
and Buddy Rich, David makes
people get up and dance!
The band is packed with the
most popular and talented
Philadelphia entertainers ever
assembled and throughout
the evening, they present a
history lesson on the sounds of
Philadelphia in our lifetime. First,
Joe Genaro played guitar as
the A’s Richard Bush delivered
The Dead Milkmen’s hit “Punk
Rock Girl”, proving Peace
Creep Richard Bush remains the
best frontman in the business.
Powerhouse vocalist Cliff Hillis
played bass and Wally Smith
handled keyboard duties with
ease on the song. And the
crowd went crazy!! For Hooters fans, John Lilley and Fran Smith Jr. joined
David throughout the night and
although I don’t remember any
Hooters songs being performed,
the band paid tribute to 3rd
and South Street where Robert
Hazard, Michael Pilla, John Lilley and Rob Miller made history,
by playing Hazard’s “Change
Reaction” to immense crowd
approval! If Phil Spector discovered Zou
Zou Mansour instead of Ronnie,
He would be a free man today!
Zou Zou transported the audience to another time and place,
where love lives and where soul
rules. Her vocal performance
was truly stellar.
Suddenly, Bob Dylan and Billy
Idol bassist Kenny Aaronson
bursts onto the stage joining
Smash Palace’s Steve Butler on
The Byrd’s “My Back Pages”.
Wow, talk about keepin’ it real…
so, let’s talk about the Soul
Survivors.
Charlie and Richie Ingui from
The Soul Survivors took us even
deeper into the Philly soul pool.
I mean these cats brought it
down to the ground and started
digging even deeper. I could
almost hear the echoes outside
the CR Club at Palombos in
South Philly. This is the kind of
rock and soul that evolved from
Louie Prima and Sachmo. With
a superb horn section consisting of David Kirshner, Zach Harski and the busiest man in show
business, Bobby Michaels, The
Survivors proceeded to burn the
house down with with an incendiary version of “Expressway to
Your Heart”.
This brings us to Greg Davis
from Beru Review. What a huge
talent! Unique guitar style and
an onstage persona to match.
Greg had the sold out crowd
dancing and laughing out loud.
Who in the world is Graham
Alexander and where did he get
that voice? Graham performed
one of “In The Pocket’s” essential songs of Philadelphia
Saturday night. He sauntered
onto the stage complete with
Supafly chapeau to present The
Tramp’s “Disco Inferno” in high
style. Forget about “The Voice”
and “American Idol”, because
this kid is the real deal. I mean,
he can sing like a moth… shut
your mouth!
There is not enough paper for
me to express the joy and fun
we experienced with David. “In
the Pocket” is an all-star variety
show, a diploma in Philly music
history and a travelling rock n’
roll party that never quits. My
advice… go online and buy a
ticket for the New Hope show
today. Anything this good can’t
last forever!
Allie Carroll making the music!
There is something hauntingly familiar in Philadelphia
singer-songwriter Allie Carroll’s
voice. You can hear the ghosts
of Patsy Cline and Laura Nyro
mingle with contemporary artists and classic journeymen.
Yet her voice captures a sound
uniquely her own, a bell in the
night.
Allie, 20, has been playing
clubs since she was in high
school, and her chops are
finely honed. Equally adept at
rock’n’roll, country, R&B, blues,
and pop, her songwriting skills
have survived trials by fire,
with newly-composed songs
often being quickly debuted in
front of a bar audience used to
hearing just covers. But Allie
does not shirk from covering
other artists; instead she digs
up surprise gems by the likes
of Loretta Lynn, The Beatles, or
Otis Redding, and turns them
inside out, exposing new meanings and thrilling her audiences.
Allie spent many years as
an acoustic solo act, playing guitar or piano. While she
hasn’t abandoned playing solo,
Allie now fronts her own band,
the Heroes. The roads Allie
explores with band mates Ryan
Cleary, Kevin Rose, and Nick
Gaspero traverse the spectrum
of popular music.
Therein lies Allie’s appeal:
she not only understands the
connections between genres,
she understands the connections between the listener and
the artist. Many of her originals
are like that strangely intimate
song you stumbled upon while
driving into the night. For that
one moment, the song was a
secret between you and the
artist. Many music fans have
discovered secrets that spoke
to them, as they found songs
that reflect their own heartache,
anger, or passion.
And Allie has secrets to im-
part and stories to tell. She
engages her audiences
by reminding them of why
they listen to music in
the first place. Hers is the
mystery voice on the radio
late at night. Discovering
Allie Carroll’s music is like
reconnecting with an old
friend and being bedazzled
by that beautiful stranger
all at once.
This is her Bio
Allie Carroll’s take on
Americana is as wide open
as the country for which
the genre is named. Driven
by a gentle acoustic guitar
or sophisticated piano, her
work is a delicate swirl of
old and new influences that
sound at home on an iPod
just as much as it would on
a dusty old 45 record.
Now a sophomore at the
University of the Arts in
Philadelphia, Carroll has
been writing and performing since she was 16.
Whether she’s sharing the stage
with John Eddie in New Jersey,
performing for more than 700
people or at Chickie & Pete’s
in Northeast Philadelphia, or
regularly captivating intimate
crowds at Center City coffee
houses and taverns, Carroll
brings an unfettered sense of
soul and sophistication to each
song and performance.
Carroll’s warm, gorgeous
voice and elegant song writing
balances strength and frailty
the way classic country singers
Loretta Lynn can and Patsy
Cline would, tempered with the
sound of artists like Taylor Swift
and Maroon Five.
On-stage, you can find her captivating audiences with intimate
contemporary and classics,
and hints at what she herself
has to offer. This year, Carroll is
heading into the studio to fully
realize her own work.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1974,
VAN HALEN changed the rock
and roll landscape forever with the
release of their self-titled, 1978
debut album and subsequently
produced a repertoire of hits that
remain some of the strongest and
most influential rock songs ever
written that fans will admire for
decades to come. With more than
75 million albums sold worldwide, and more No. 1 hits on the
Billboard Mainstream Rock chart
than any other artist, the band’s
record of achievement is hard to
top. The eponymous debut album
and 1984 were both certified
Diamond, for U.S. sales in excess
of 10 million, placing them on an
elite short list of double RIAA-certified Diamond Award honorees.
VAN HALEN was inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in
2007.

the week, I brought & continue

When you hit the “Upper Deck

many arcade games. The main

you return to that same spot
be honest, I never sampled any bar. This room seriously reminds me of a western type satime & time again, but, only to
food menu items, which was
loon with this wrap around 2nd
realize that you never tried their kinda ignorant of me. First off
foodie offerings? Well my little

3rd bar to chillax
at with good
friendz, or maybe
make a few new
ones while you
are here.
My main dude
“Jesse” (da
owner) had a
vision of bringing
great food, cold
adult beverages &
exciting entertainment to the fine
township of Bristol. “Jesse” freakin knocked that
ball clearly outta
the park with a
grand slam home
run. The “Upper
Deck Bar & Grill”
is a fabulous
establishment,
just give it a try
and I guarantee
you will return
time after time
again just like me.
When I visited
for my “DininG
ArounD TowN”
foodie review,
a good friend
of mine “Joe”
(da manager) was on
duty making sure all
was running smooth
like always. I can’t
say enough about
“Joe”, cause this man
keeps shyt on track
and makes sure all his
patrons of the “Upper
Deck Bar & Grill” are
100% satisfied a 100%
of the time.
As we dive into my
review, the first thing
to leave the kitchen
& be placed in front
of me was the “Fresh
Spinach Salad” with
its ingredients of fresh
spinach leaves topped
with crispy chopped
bacon, cranberries
& raisins tossed in a
raspberry vinaigrette
dressing. WoW, so
refreshing to have a
quality fresh crispy
salad loaded with a plate of fully
flavored choices. This was a
perfect beginning to my “Upper
Deck Bar & Grill” bites & eats
experience.
Staying with the fresh &
refreshing theme, I decided to
go with the “Fresh Mozzarella
& Tomato Crostini” selection,
listed under “Fresh Plates”
on the menu. How can you
go wrong with freshly sliced
mozzarella cheese, chopped
Roma tomatoes & fresh basil,
then all drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette on numerous
crunchy toasted garlic crostinis.
These little creations sent from
heaven, can be enjoyed any
time of the long live day, if you
are having a few cocktails, this
is a superb selection as either
an appetizer or a nibbling finger
food item.
Let’s keep this culinary train
moving forward with the
“Cheese Steak Bites” being
next up on my to-do list. The
“Upper Deck Bar & Grill” has
added these fried morsels of
perfection to their menu I think
for us Philadelphians, cause I
was thrilled over the fried up
Angus beef & fried onions with
Cooper sharp American cheese
all snuggled up in a light pastry
puff. I even took along a side
of ketchup with me for the wild
ride. Addicting, these thingz
are so freakin addicting to my
whiskey drink azz, I just can’t
get enough of them for real
dealio.
Next up was the “Prime Rib
Dipper”, which included a huge
portion of thinly sliced black
Angus prime rib topped with
melted Provolone cheese as
it was baked on top of this
one of a kind sandwich, plus a
flavorfully season side of au-jus
for dipping. In my opinion, this
has to be one of the ultimate
delegacies in comfort food
sandwiches. When you order
this up @ the “Upper Deck Bar
& Grill” it comes with an order
of crispy French fries & pickles
or for just 2 bucks more you
can substitute them with a
side of homemade “Baked
Mac & Cheese”.
After my belly was full of these
fine culinary cuisine choices, It
was my pleasure to meet the
master that had my taste buds
rolling over for more. Yes, I am
talking about my gurl “Chef
Stacy”, this woman freakin
rocks hard core in the kitchen
cuisine & she makes it all look
so damn easy. The “Upper
Deck Bar & Grill” along with all
of us, are so fortunate to have
this outstanding chef doing
what she does so very well.
Thank you “Chef Stacy” once
again for a fine service.
When you visit the “Upper
Deck Bar & Grill”, also try
a few of these magnificent
delights like the “Decka Porchetta”, the “Mike Schmidter”,
the “Rocky Balboa” & the
“Italian Stallion”. I am not going to be a spoiler & describe
all of these awesome entrées,
I am leaving it up to you to get
your butt over to the “Upper
Deck Bar & Grill” for yourself
& enjoy their wickedly good
foodie selections.
I must thank “Jack” (bartender)
for this wonderful adventure,
cause this dude was so damn
knowledgeable with regards to
the entire foodie menu & all of
the dishes. The “Upper Deck
Bar & Grill” has a spectacular
sexy staff with sum of them
being my very close friendz.
Please put this place on your
flavor town radar & stop by to
see my professional bar staff
peepz like “Blonde
Sarah” (bartender),
“Brunette Sarah”
(bartender), “Mariah” (bartender) &
“Kevin” (bartender).
Just to hit on a few
informational point
of interest, every
Friday is “Fireball

my man “DJ FAVS”
in the mix with

Saturday of every month is an
“Oldies Dance Party” from 4pm
to 8pm with my brotha from
anotha mutha “DJ DINO” rockin
the old skool.
The “Upper Deck Bar & Grill”
has so many drink & food specials I just don’t have enough
ink in my pen to write them all
down, so flip through this amazing entertainment guide & look
for their advertisement, as it list
many ultra valuable deals.

EAGLES FREE AGENT BINGE: WHO IS REALLY STAYING?
By AL THOMPSON
It started out like the calm before the storm.
On March 9 the Eagles announced the signing
of a former draft pick, linebacker Brandon
Graham.
The Birds brought back a player who had
finally found his groove under new defensive
coordinator Bill Davis.
Graham had appeared in 64 games with 13
starts over his five seasons in Philadelphia,
collaring 136 tackles, 17 sacks, nine forced
fumbles and one fumble recovery.
In 2014, Graham notched 5.5 sacks, while
finishing second on the team with 13.5 tackles
for loss and third with 18 quarterback hurries.
It was more of a feel-good move for Eagles
fans that the personable Graham was back
in the nest.
The next three days though, would produce
more movement of key players not seen with
this team in recent memory.
Here is a look at the three days that shook the
Eagles franchise to its roots and one person’s
guess if the players acquired are here to stay,
or part of a draft day plan to move up to get
Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota or safety
Brandon Collins out of Alabama.
Either player could have an impact right away,
but to get one of them, they will likely have to
trade up.
The Eagles on March 10 agreed on a trade
sending the club’s all time leading rusher,
LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills in exchange
for linebacker Kiko Alonso.
Originally a second-round selection (46th overall) of the Bills in the 2013 NFL Draft, Alonso
was impressive his rookie season, starting all
16 games and registering 159 tackles, two
sacks and four interceptions en route to Pro
Football Writers Association Defensive Rookie
of the Year honors.
His 159 tackles ranked third in the NFL and
was also the third-highest total by an NFL
rookie since 2000.
Alonso, 24, missed the 2014 season after suffering a torn ACL prior to the start of training
camp. He starred collegiately at the University
of Oregon under Eagles Head Coach Chip
Kelly.
The Eagles desperately need to change their
identity on defense and a healthy Alonso can
help accomplish that. No way the 6-foot-3,
238 pounder is going anywhere.
The next day the Eagles agreed to trade that
sent quarterback Nick Foles, a fourth round
draft pick in 2015 and a second round pick in
2016 to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for
quarterback Sam Bradford and the Rams fifth
round pick in 2015.
This deal took Eagles Nation by surprise to
say the least.
Bradford was the first overall pick by the Rams
in 2010, but the 6-4, 224 pound signal caller,
despite playing well, starting 49 career games,
throwing for 11,065 yards on 58.6 percent
passing with 59 touchdowns and 38 interceptions over his five-year career, was coming
off back-to-back ACL tears at the time of the
trade, and obviously is a major question mark.
Bradford’s second ACL tear occurred in
August of 2014 and the 2010 NFL Offensive
Rookie of the Year was placed on Injured
Reserve and missed the entire 2014 season.
Foles started 24 games during his threeyear career, posting 6,753 yards and 46
touchdowns on 61.6 percent passing. Foles
earned Pro Bowl honors following the 2013
season after leading the league with a 119.2
quarterback rating, the third-best mark in NFL
history, on the back of 27 touchdowns and
two interceptions.
Most thought Kelly would go back to Foles if
getting Mariota didn’t work out.
So for many Eagles fans and observers, this
trade has still not sunk in yet.
Is there something up Kelly’s sleeve with
Bradford?
No one will know until April 30, but don’t be
surprised if Bradford’s stay in Philadelphia is
a brief one.
On the same day as the Foles trade, the
Eagles signed former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Bryon Maxwell to a six-year contract
worth a reported $63 million with $25 million
guaranteed.
Originally a sixth-round draft choice of the
Seattle Seahawks in 2011, Maxwell (6-1, 207)
recorded two interceptions and a team-high
12 passes defensed in 2014 while helping
the Seahawks reach the Super Bowl for the
second-consecutive season.
Maxwell appeared in 47 games (17 starts) for
the Seahawks during his four-year tenure with
the team, totaling 70 tackles, six interceptions,
26 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and
one fumble recovery.
Maxwell is not going anywhere. The Birds
need his services too much.
The next day the Eagles signed cornerback
Walter Thurmond III on a one-year contract
and signed quarterback Mark Sanchez to a
two-year contract.
A fourth-round draft choice of Seattle in the
2010 NFL Draft, Thurmond (5-11, 190) has appeared in 36 career games (nine starts) for the
Seahawks (2010-13) and the New York Giants
(2014) over his five-year career. After signing
with the Giants during the 2014 offseason,
Thurmond saw action in two games before being placed on Injured Reserve after tearing his
pectoral in a Week 2 loss against Arizona.
The 27-year old Thurmond, who has registered
84 tackles, one interception, 16 passes
defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble
recovery in his five seasons in the NFL that
includes a Super Bowl ring while he was with
Seattle is part of the puzzle to upgrade the
defense and is unlikely to be going anywhere.
Same with Sanchez. The 6-2, 225 pounder
appeared in nine games in his first season in
Philadelphia, completing 198-of-309 passes
for 2,418 yards and 14 touchdowns while setting an Eagles single-season franchise record
with a career-high 64.1 percent completion
percentage.
Sanchez, 28, became just the fourth Eagles
quarterback in team history to throw for
300-plus yards in three-straight games (vs.
Carolina, at Green Bay and vs. Tennessee)
while also setting a franchise record with 37
completions in a single contest at Washington
on December 20.
He endured a four-game losing streak that
knocked the Birds out of the playoffs. But
remember, the Eagles lost three of those
games because they couldn’t cover anyone,
not because of Sanchez.
On March 12, Kelly and the Eagles brought the
house down by signing two Pro Bowl running
backs, Ryan Mathews from the San Diego
Chargers and DeMarco Murray from the Dallas
Cowboys.
The Eagles and Mathews agreed on a threeyear contract valued at about $12 million,
with about half guaranteed.
Originally a first-round draft selection (12th
overall) of San Diego in the 2010 NFL Draft,
the oft-injured Mathews (6-0, 220) appeared

in 60 games (52 starts) for the Chargers,
totaling 4,061 yards and 23 touchdowns on
923 carries (4.4 avg.). He has also recorded
1,110 yards and one touchdown on 146
receptions (7.6 avg.) during his five-year
career.
He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2011 after
rushing for 1,091 yards and six touchdowns,
while also catching 50 passes for 455 yards.
With the Eagles investment in Murray, in
addition to Kelly already happy with the play
of veteran Darren Sproles and Chris Polk,
Mathews is the most likely to be trade bait
on draft day.
When the Eagles inked the five-year contract
with Murray worth a reported $42 million
and $21 Million guaranteed, bringing in the
2014 rushing champion silenced many of
the McCoy-trade critics. According to most
observers, Murray is a much better fit for the
things Kelly likes to do on offense.
Murray also takes pressure – and a lot of
unnecessary pounding – off of Bradford
especially while he gets his chops back after
his long layoff.
The 2014 AP Offensive Player of the Year is
a virtual lock to be an Eagle in 2015.
But Kelly, who could probably get work for
the CIA and NSA as a consultant on how to
keep secrets, could blow up this column the
same way he just did the Eagles roster.
Get out the popcorn, this ride is far from
over.

© Dr Lou – Why worry about a
right when you’ve got nothing
left?
How do we take the news we
hear each day? There’s just so
much hype around us and we’ve
never had the chance to grow
into the level of mental bombardment we get every day. When
you look at things like this very
paper, where at least the ideas
here aren’t meant to drive you to
do anything but go out and enjoy
yourself, there’s a side of the rest
of the media that you’ll encounter
that just isn’t there for the fun
of it. It’s been said (by me) that
“there is no cliché without truth”
(a Dr Lou Ism), and when you say
things like the early bird catches
the worm, it’s not because he or
she is better at worm catching,
it’s a matter of being in the right
place at the right time. So once
you gather the realization that
it’s nothing to do with skill that
makes you the leader in anything,
you’ll fast start to understand
what the media is basically about.
Did you ever watch a bunch of
birds in the yard, either with or
without extra-curricular elements
of nourishment at your behest?
You’ll notice that birds aren’t all
that nice to each other. Beyond
their incessant chirping which to
this day all of our scientists can’t
make out any rhyme or reason,
birds are vicious creatures that
will eat just about anything and
they’ll attack each
other and get proprietary
about a few yards of
earth just while they’re
hunting there, then
they fly off in a wave
just because everyone
else is going. People
are like birds in a lot
of ways, and more like
sheep as the rich and
famous kindly tag us
with as the “sh eeple”
because we’re so easily
led into our own demise
and misery that no
other barn yard animal
could measure up to
our docility. The media
is under the control of a
few families who have
an interest in protecting their worms. They
really aren’t any smarter than the
rest of the people, they are in fact
less engaged than most unless
it has to do with the few yards
of earth they’re feeding on, and
then they’ll run people off just
the same as the cackling black
bird. But for us here in the real
world, we’re not as dumb as we
may seem, we’re just a bit lazy,
and I’m including myself in that
bunch of sour grapes too. Yes it
can be said that opportunity has
passed me by, so fast sometimes
it’s left me with not a stich and a
wind burn. But here I am writing
away trying to make deadline and
I ask why? I guess it’s because
maybe, just maybe some of the
things we say here might get
someone to think; yes think about
why something happens, why
do people continue to hurt each
other and manipulate each other
and then take the spoils and hide
away with it? I’m not condemning success by any stretch of the
imagination and I wouldn’t know
exactly how I might react with the
situation of tremendous wealth
actually happening.
Maybe some blood sucking
relatives or ancient friends might
pour out of the woodwork and
park on my couch until I paid
them to leave? Be that as it may
I wouldn’t be in a position to stop
thinking. And that’s the point of
this article, the term; “Is it Any
Wonder” is a cliché, and it’s one
that has to be looked at deeper to
really grasp the true meaning and
value of this simple term. Unlike
a lot of clichés it’s framed in the
form of a question. It’s leaving it
to you to take the next step by
implying that something you may
find as a “wonder” or a wonderful
thing may in fact not be wonderful at all. It may be mundane
or even passé but by asking
“is there any” makes you take
your own beliefs into question.
Because you think something
is great; is it really great. Is it
possible that you could be taught
something in school that is in fact
wonderful from the perspective
of learning but may in fact be a
calculated set of “wonders” that
were meant to distract you and
push your beliefs into feeling
that what you’ve heard is truth or
even gospel. So is it any wonder
that when we really look deeper,
and investigate the details of
things we thought were true,
things that were purported to us
as truth, may in fact have been
lies all along? Is it any wonder
that our young people’s beliefs
in the values of life and death
are somehow left in a state of
confusion to the point where
the luster of living itself doesn’t
draw enough of an audience to
make it worth celebrating? Is it
any wonder that we all fear, not
the bombs of an enemy at the
doorstep but the inner foes that
we face in the business world
trying to keep a job for life knowing full well that the main reason
for our jobs may be subject to
the whim of someone so fare
disconnected from us, yet pulling
the strings like a marionette. I’m
not here to annoy you, just here
to ask the simple question; is it
any wonder, that the truth is what
we seek, and find it far stranger
than fiction, and the toughest pill
to swallow. All I can say; is don’t
forget to look up, look around,
listen, ask why, keep asking why.
But maybe we’ll just be lucky and
the truth will show up under the
tree one snowy Christmas day; I
won’t hold my breath, I won’t stop
breathing, and I wont’s stop singing, laughing, riding, caring, sharing and understanding. That’s
what we are; see ya at the bar…

Jason and Aaron Invade That Metal Show!
By Jason Voorhees, Contributor to
PhillyRockRadio.com
In a world where pop and hip hop
dominate the charts and the M in MTV
apparently no longer stands for music,
VH1 Classic, and in particular, That
Metal Show, remains your home for
all things hard rock and heavy metal.
The show is hosted by metal connoisseur Eddie Trunk and his metalhead/
comedian buddies Jim Florentine and
Don Jamieson, and airs Saturday nights
at 9pm. This past Tuesday, my buddy
Aaron and I had the opportunity to crash
the party at a taping of TMS!
The scheduled guests were Mark
Tremonti, of Alterbridge/Tremonti, and
Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless.
Frank Hannon, lead guitarist of Tesla,
was the special guest guitarist. The
show was full of surprises as Mark Mendoza, Eddie Ojeda and J.J. French of
Twisted Sister kicked off the show to pay
tribute to their friend and founding member of Twisted Sister, drummer A.J. Pero,
who recently passed away. Aaron got
some air time as he was a contestant on
the “Stump the Trunk” segment of the
show. This was a highlight of the show,
as things got funny and a bit awkward
between Aaron and Jim Florentine, who
invited us to the taping. It was all in fun
though, and you will have to watch the
March 28 episode of TMS to see what
exactly went down!
After the show wrapped, we hung out
with Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine, Don
Jamieson, Frank Hannon and Mark
Tremonti. They were all great guys to
talk to. We were especially impressed
by how down to earth and personable
Mark Tremonti was. He was open to all
kinds of conversation and seemed to be
thoroughly enjoying the interaction with
the fans. All in all, our time at the TMS
taping was a tremendous experience
and for any fans of hard rock and heavy
metal, TMS is a must watch show. It’s
also great to know that all of the guys on
the show are metal fans just like us and
this is their passion. Watching Eddie, Jim
and Don on stage interviewing guys they
idolize is something we can all relate to
and makes the show genuine; and no
one knows the genre like Eddie Trunk!
Don’t forget to tune into VH1 Classic and
check out That Metal Show Saturday
nights at 9pm!
Don Evans, guitarist, vocalist and
recording engineer, has had an
incredible career performing and
recording with some of the “who’s
who” in rock’n’roll. Currently living
in the Philadelphia area, he continues to perform with a wide variety
of musicians in addition to working
on his own projects. His eclectic
background and years of experience makes Don Evans a unique
find amongst the Philadelphia music
scene and his creative approach to
roots and popular music sets him
apart from other guitarists in the
area.
Originally from northern New
Jersey, Don became interested in
music at an early age after listening to classical music at home and
then Pop, R&B, and Country on
the radio. Don grew up singing in
various choirs and playing both
trumpet and piano before becoming
enthralled with the possibilities of
electric guitar. As a teenager, Don
began teaching himself guitar and
quickly formed a band playing Blues,
Surf, and Rock inspired by popular music. Throughout the 1960s,
Don participated in various bands,
including a Beatles cover band, “The
Banned,” and played on a number
of studio sessions in New York City
with “The Tradewinds,” who had a
minor hit with “New York’s A Lonely
Town When You’re The Only Surfer
Boy Around.”
In 1970, Don moved to LA to work
with “The Tradewinds” at Family
Productions, a company started by
the owner of Kama Sutra Records,
Artie Ripp, who had produced the
Lovin’ Spoonful, Melanie, and many
others. Between 1970 and 1971, Don
worked for Family Productions and
ended up recording on Cold Spring
Harbor with Billy Joel in addition to a
number of other projects.
In 1973, Don was offered a job
touring with Billy Joel and preceded
to spend three years on and off
the road with him. During this time,
he recorded Street Life Serenade,
worked on pre-production for Joel’s
Don Evans
next album,
and played
sessions
with various
musicians
in LA.
When Joel
decided to
return to
New York in
1976, Don
opted to
stay on the
West Coast
and began
working
with singersongwriter
Dirk Hamilton. In
addition to
touring with
Dirk, Don
recorded three albums and acted as
co-producer and engineer on Meet
Me At The Crux and Thug of Love.
While recording and acting as a
producer and engineer in Venice,
CA, Don started a weekly Blues
Jam along with musicians, some
of whom went on to play with John
Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt, and Neil Young.
By 1982, Evans began touring with
Eric Burdon throughout the United
States, Canada, and Europe. He
and Burdon co-wrote the single,
“The Night,” which was the Animals’
single, released when Eric joined
their reunion in 1983.
Following a few years of gigging
with the bassist and drummer of Burdon’s band and singer Teresa James,
Don moved to Reno, NV to become
the chief engineer at Granny’s House
recording studios. This opportunity
led to his working with Kim Wilson,
Ronnie James Dio, Whitesnake,
Toad the Wet Sproket, Gerald Alston,
The Byrds, Dave Mason, and many
others. Between 1992 and 2000,
Don developed a musical partnership with bass player and vocalist,
LJ Lawrence, working in casinos
and playing festivals throughout the
Western United States.
After deciding to return to southern
New Jersey in 2000, Don established himself as a staple member
of the Philadelphia blues scene,
working with Carol Moog, the Blues
Mercenaries, Georgie Bonds, Vikki
Austin, Big Leroy Foster, Fred Hall,
and Chappy Washington, among
others. Aside from working locally,
Don rekindled a working relationship
with Dirk Hamilton and has toured
annually throughout Italy, recorded
a live album in Italy, Relative Health
of Your Horse Outside (2003), and
has recorded and co-produced The
Ghost of Van Gogh (2007).
Currently, Don works with various
bands throughout the Philadelphia
area, has recently finished recording Dirk Hamilton’s latest album,
and is working on an Internet-based
album with bassist Lenny Fatigati.
While he enjoys performing with a
wide variety of groups, Don leads
the Don Evans Band, focusing on
blues, soul, rock, and R&B, which
originally inspired him to play. He has
begun pre-production work on a new
album and has performed as the Don
Evans band at the State Street Blues
Stroll in Media, Warmdaddy’s, and
Joseph’s Grille, among others.

A Rose Goes Solo
Paul Keen steps out of Pawnshop Roses
and into what he’s under
By Eric Jefferson, Contributor to
PhillyRockRadio.com
The good times never last and the
bad times never stay, but Paul Keen
and Pawnshop Roses certainly generated quite a few good times over a
10-year period. Since 2004, the band
was a fixture of the Philadelphia music scene, whether it was tearing the
house down at Grape Street, packing
’em in at World Café Live, or playing
the local bar up the street from your
place, Pawnshop gave every performance the same way, with a whole lot
of (as Paul calls it): “rock-n-roll outlaw
country soul.”
From 2005-2010, Pawnshop Roses
released three albums and shared
stages with such acts as Velvet Revolver, Hoobastank, Robert Randolph,
Jack Johnson, Molly Hatchet, and Radiohead. In 2006, the band snagged
a well-deserved win for “Best Live
Video” in YouTube’s Underground
Video contest, which also earned
them an appearance on ABC’s Good
Morning America. Two years later,
their song “All the Way Down” was
featured on an episode of MTV’s The
Real World.
But now, Paul’s venturing out as
one. His first solo release, What I’m
Under, showcases the same blunt,
lyrical introspection of his Pawnshop
days, yet steers the musical direction
into much deeper Americana waters.
Produced by Pete Donnelly (The
Figgs, NRBQ, Soul Asylum), Paul’s
candid words on the life he leads (as
well as those around him) are given
plenty of room to breathe within Donnelly’s production. If anything, the
lighter arrangements allow the words
to take on a more prominent and vivid
imagery, pulling the listener in more
often than pushing the music out.
In addition to recording and
performing his own music, Paul occasionally takes the stage as part of
Dead Flowers, a Philly-based Rolling
Stones’ tribute band, which also
includes his former Pawnshop Roses’
band mates.
What made you decide to record
and release What I’m Under as a solo
album rather than a Pawnshop Roses’
project?
Well, Pawnshop Roses sort of broke
up. When I say “sort of”, we’re all still
friends. We still hang out. We still jam.
We do the Dead Flowers’ shows. But
as far as new band material, there
really isn’t anything on the horizon.
It’s not out of the question, but we all
have our own, different projects going
on right now. For me, I had a bunch of
songs that never made it onto Pawnshop albums. Some of them have
been around for as long as 12 years.
So, I just wanted to finally record
those and get them out there. I added
in a few new songs as well.
Your music has never fit neatly
into one category. I’ve heard not just
elements of rock, country, R&B, and
blues, but also full-fledged tracks of
each, all on the same album. On What
I’m Under, though, with the exception
of the cool, rock ‘n’ roll slither of “Fire
in the Hole”, the tracks thoroughly
embrace your quieter, Americana
side.
Absolutely. With the new record,
I wanted to have some focus. My
musical tastes are all over the place.
I personally love to listen to a record
with all those different styles, and
Pawnshop Roses’ albums reflected
that. You’d hear a riff-rock, Zeppelintype song, and then the next track
would be a piano ballad. For this one,
though, I decided to really make it
more of a country/singer-songwriter
album. I wrote “Fire in the Hole” last.
I wasn’t sure if it was going to fit with
the rest of the album, but I showed it
to my producer, Pete Donnelly, and he
really liked it. So, we threw it on there.
You mentioned working with Pete
Donnelly. How influential was he in
shaping the album’s sound?
He was definitely influential. He did
a great job of capturing what was in
my head. A lot of times, before, we
would just work with engineers who
weren’t necessarily producers. We
would just say, “We want it to sound
like this, blah blah blah.” But with
Pete, he honed the sound. He also
played almost every instrument on
it. The Pawnshop guys are on the
chauffeur holding a sign that
said “Pawnshop Roses.”
Also, any bar or restaurant
we went into with that group,
all we had to do was say
“YouTube”, and the whole
tab was on them. It was
kind of like, “celebrity for the
weekend.” Scoot Lammey
shot that video. I still work with
him once in a while. He’ll kind of
film things here and there, and
we’ll put them online, but nothing
as involved as that Grape Street
production.
What’s a sampling of your listening choices these days?
There’s a band I like out of
North Carolina, called American
Aquarium. The name comes
from a Wilco song. They have kind
of a ’90s alt-country sound, which
I’ve always loved. Their new album,
Wolves, is very good. There’s also a
British performer I like by the name of
Frank Turner. He’s a great lyricist with
a cool, Celtic, punk feel. He’s very
good with songs that make you want
album, and a few other musicians, but
Pete played bass, drums, guitar, keys,
and backup vocals. Another thing
about Pete is that I’d always known
him to be a great bass player, but
I’d never heard him play lead guitar.
He did the solo on “Fire in the Hole”,
which is really cool. It makes the song
stand out.
Did you guys know each other before working together on this album?
Oh yeah. Pawnshop played a few
shows with The Figgs years ago, and
I knew Pete produced and engineered
stuff. He actually co-produced the
first Pawnshop album, Let It Roll, with
us. I liked what he did with that. For
the new album, though, I pretty much
gave him the reins.
Tell me about the album’s title (and
title song), What I’m Under.
Where did that come from?
I wrote the song and
didn’t really think of the
words much at first. After
looking more closely, I
started to really connect
with them. Everyone is
‘under’ something, whether
it’s under pressure of a job,
under the weight of debt,
the weight of being misunderstood, under some sort
of influence, etc. Everyone,
in every walk of life, is
dealing with something. So,
I thought it would be interesting to lyrically say, ‘Okay,
this is what I’m under.’
One of the things that’s
noticeable in your lyrics,
whether with Pawnshop or
on your own, is your ability
All credit cards accepted!
and willingness to create a
candid, often grim, and (I’m
guessing) autobiographical
portrait of a working musician’s life.
I do write to real life,
whether it’s my own or
someone else’s. It’s usually
either me, or someone I
know and am close with.
It’s kind of a catharsis thing
for me. It gets it all out
there and helps me deal
with things in life. People
have always told me: “write
what you know.” So, I try to
write what I know. I think if
I didn’t, or was pretending
to be someone I’m not, the
songs wouldn’t be as good.
Over the years, what have
been some of your favorite
venues in the Philly area to
play?
The Grape Room (in
Manayunk) is definitely one.
It’s back to its original location, which is great. That’s
kind of where I got my start.
I was a 21-year-old kid who
did some research online
and just started showing up
at open mics. Scooter Best,
the co-owner there, is awesome. He was a big part of
helping Pawnshop Roses
develop our live shows. He
continued to book us and
gave us a chance to grow.
World Café Live is always
good. The sound system
is amazing, and our fans
seemed to really like that
place. Pawnshop always
did well there. We could
book a show three blocks
away and no one would
show up, but if we were
playing at World Café Live,
it’d be a big crowd.
Let’s jump back a bit. In
2006, Pawnshop Roses
won YouTube’s “Best Live
Band” video contest, which
earned you an appearance
on ABC’s Good Morning
classic go go
America. What are some of
Mon & Tue 11AM to 7PM
your memories of that?
Well, we took the train
Wed, Thurs, Fri 11AM to Midnight
up to New York, and we’d
been told that we were
Saturday 11AM to 10PM
going to be picked up, but
we weren’t told in what
Sunday 12PM to 7PM
type of vehicle. I figured it
was going to be a van or
something like that. When
we got to the street, there
was a limo waiting, with a
Page 31
Stones had the swagger. They were
the classic rock ‘n’ roll band. And of
course, Dylan has those incredible
lyrics.
Where are some places folks can
see you performing these days?
I’m at Rogues Gallery Bar every
Tuesday, doing a solo acoustic show.
That’s in Center City. There’s also a
cool place in Conshohocken called
Southern Cross Kitchen, which I
play occasionally. They have a baby
grand piano there, which is great for
bringing in a piano player for a duo.
I’ve always loved the sound of an
acoustic guitar and piano together.
Speaking of that, I’ll be at Rockwood
Music Hall in New York on May 2,
with Justin DiFebbo. Justin played

Small White Dot
A class was given a homework
assignment to find out something
exciting and relate it to the class
the next day.
When the time came to present
what they’d found, the first little
boy the teacher called on walked
up to the front of the class, picked
up a piece of chalk, made a small
white dot on the blackboard and
sat back down.
Puzzled, the teacher asked him
what it was.
“It’s a ‘period’,” he replied.
“I can see that,” said the teacher,
“but what is so exciting about a
‘period’?”
“Darned if I know,” said the boy,
“but yesterday my sister was
missing one, Mom fainted,
Dad had a heart attack and the
boy next door joined the Navy.”

---Q&A’s
Q: Did you hear the rumor about
butter?
A: Never mind, I better not spread
it.
---Unique
People tell me that I have a unique
way of lighting up a room
It’s call arson and those people
are called witnesses!
---Good Question!
If women aren’t meant to cook,
then why do they have eggs and
milk inside of them?
---To The Zoo
I went to the zoo the other day
and they only had one animal - a
dog.
It was a Shih Tzu.
