PIERCE COUNTY DEMOGRAPHICS
• 795,000 residents (2010) and the 2nd most
populated county in WA State.
• 50% increase in racial and ethnic minorities
since 1980 reflects shifting population base.
• 12% of residents live below the federal
poverty income level.
Solutions: What Doesn’t Work
Disjointed efforts across a community
Inconsistent and/or conflicting messages
Blaming – parents, kids, teachers, school nutrition directors, parks and
recreation directors, doctors, etc.
Targeting a segment of the population
Solutions: What Does Work
Prevention is easier than treatment
Communities coming together
Consistent Messages across multiple sectors
Environmental changes – “walk-able” communities
Policy changes to support environmental changes
Small Steps
WHAT 5210 MEANS:
 Ready, Set, Go! 5210 program interventions
center on the use of the common message of
“5‐2‐1‐0”. These behaviors are supported by science
and endorsed as recommendations by medical
professionals:
5210 Works!
• 5210 has been implemented in 36
states
• Adopted and endorsed by

READY, SET, GO! 5210
MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in partnership with ACHIEVE
and other community organizations launched the countywide initiative,
Ready, Set, Go! 5210, on October 6, 2011 with the vision
of creating healthier communities with healthier children.
READY, SET, GO! 5210
Continuing the Call to Action for Obesity Prevention
READY, SET, GO! MISSION
Ready, Set, Go! 5210 mission is to increase physical
activity and healthy eating among each of the six
sectors that influence youth and families;
1. Schools
2. After School
3. Early Childhood
4. Health Care
5. Workplace
6. Community
READY, SET, GO! 5210 ULTIMATELY SEEKS TO:
 Increase the proportion of Pierce County youth,
ages 0 to 18, to a healthy weight.
 Change policy and environments to support
healthy eating and active living.
 Evaluate the interventions to make mid‐course
improvements and learn from experiences.
 Create a model that can be replicated in other
parts of Washington State.
 Assure sustainability of results.
