Healthy Communities of Pierce County Increase of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Sources: Nielsen et al. Changes in beverage intake between 1977 and 2001. Am J Prev Med 2004; 27(3):205–210; NCHS, National Health Examination Surveys II and III, National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys I–III, and NHANES from 1999 to 2008. 32 PIERCE COUNTY DEMOGRAPHICS • 795,000 residents (2010) and the 2nd most populated county in WA State. • 50% increase in racial and ethnic minorities since 1980 reflects shifting population base. • 12% of residents live below the federal poverty income level. Solutions: What Doesn’t Work Disjointed efforts across a community Inconsistent and/or conflicting messages Blaming – parents, kids, teachers, school nutrition directors, parks and recreation directors, doctors, etc. Targeting a segment of the population Solutions: What Does Work Prevention is easier than treatment Communities coming together Consistent Messages across multiple sectors Environmental changes – “walk-able” communities Policy changes to support environmental changes Small Steps WHAT 5210 MEANS: Ready, Set, Go! 5210 program interventions center on the use of the common message of “5‐2‐1‐0”. These behaviors are supported by science and endorsed as recommendations by medical professionals: 5210 Works! • 5210 has been implemented in 36 states • Adopted and endorsed by www.letsmove.gov READY, SET, GO! 5210 MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in partnership with ACHIEVE and other community organizations launched the countywide initiative, Ready, Set, Go! 5210, on October 6, 2011 with the vision of creating healthier communities with healthier children. READY, SET, GO! 5210 Continuing the Call to Action for Obesity Prevention READY, SET, GO! MISSION Ready, Set, Go! 5210 mission is to increase physical activity and healthy eating among each of the six sectors that influence youth and families; 1. Schools 2. After School 3. Early Childhood 4. Health Care 5. Workplace 6. Community READY, SET, GO! 5210 ULTIMATELY SEEKS TO: Increase the proportion of Pierce County youth, ages 0 to 18, to a healthy weight. Change policy and environments to support healthy eating and active living. Evaluate the interventions to make mid‐course improvements and learn from experiences. Create a model that can be replicated in other parts of Washington State.
