This restaurant is named after the two authentic fireplaces inside the
historical building. This monument building has been into a lot of
transformations through centuries, it has changed from slaughterhouse to
bicycle store. Finally, it went through its last major restauration that lasted
for 7 years straight to become this charming historical restaurant. The
restaurant opened its door on July 7th 2010 for everyone to enjoy a piece of
history, an excellent experience and an exceptional meal.
Short History
This monument dates back to 1684, in which is confirmed by a tax collector’s yearbook
at that time. At the very beginning the building was a slaughterhouse, confirmed by an
old document, which dates back to 1733.
Later on, in 1772 the ceiling got lifted making it possible to move around freely, even
with animals hanging around. Supposedly, before that animals were slaughtered in the
backyard before they were hanged inside, waiting to be deboned.
Under the former bedroom (what now is our wardrobe), you will find a basement (what
now is our wine cellar). This place is nicely decorated with green yellow tiles and has a
brine tub in it, once used to brine meat. Moreover, on the ceiling there is a hatch once
used to lift meat to the upper floor.
On the other side of the hatch, there is a spacious room what used to be a working place,
next to it there is a smoking room where meats were smoked into hams. This room is
completely covered in black soot, due to the smoking processes throughout the years.
Furthermore, under the current kitchen there is the cistern, were water was collected
from to wash the meat.
During the 19th century, this large-scale slaughterhouse slowly transformed into a local
butchery to satisfy local villagers’ needs. Later on, for the butcher to display his products
shop fronts were placed with large windows. Finally, in 1918 this building became a
bicycle store before it turned into what it is now.
