Uke It Up with the Edukated Fleas
Friday, July 15 at 6 p.m.
Deike Auditorium
Going strong on the road full time, Suzanne and
Jim continue to delight audiences across the United
States and in Canada and Europe with their unique
blend of traditional and historic music. The husband
and wife team are troubadours in the truest sense,
maintaining the Americana Roots Music tradition
since 1992. From extensive research in museums,
libraries and archived collections as well as
conversations with traditional musicians across
the country Suzanne and Jim craft a lively and
engaging journey through the roots of Americana
Music, bringing a new voice to the musical heritage
of our country. The couple blend their harmonious
duet vocals with skillful musicianship on acoustic
instruments- 5 string banjo, guitars, flute, autoharp,
courtship dulcimer (and a few surprises).
GLH Assembly Room
Ukuleles are small, yet, ukulele duet Greg Doyle
and Wendy Matthews play the big hits, favoring
swing and vintage tunes, as well as a few things
you might not expect to hear on uke. The Fleas
have been playing together as a ukulele duo since
late 2006, united by a common love of the music
from the 20s through 50s. As the Fleas soon
discovered, ukes are perfect for these cheerful,
melodic tunes. The Fleas feature both Greg and
Wendy on vocals, often in harmony. The Fleas
have delighted audiences in venues as varied
as the Clearwater Festival, Hoot on the Hudson,
Ukulele Cabaret and New York Ukulele Festival,
as well as street fairs, restaurants, libraries, art
openings and private parties across New York,
Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine.

Masonic Village has the unique benefit of featuring a working farm
and orchard among its many campus amenities. While plenty of
restaurants boast fresh, local menu ingredients, most do not feature
beef raised on their properties.
And Masonic Village’s beef is not just any beef.
Our beef operation is a member of the Pennsylvania Beef Quality
Assurance (BQA) Program, which ensures beef cattle are raised in a
manner that results in a safe and wholesome product. This program
is monitored and supported by the Pennsylvania Beef Council,
the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the Pennsylvania
Cattlemen’s Association and Penn State University.
We feed our cattle only top-rate grains and corn silage grown
on Masonic Village’s 700-acre farm, and the cattle receive no
hormones. To produce a tender and flavorful beef, it is dry aged
for 21 days at a local family-run, USDA-inspected facility. All these
efforts helped the Masonic Village Farm earn the national 2016
Cow/Calf BQA award.
Masonic Village’s beef is coming to a plate near you. The Food
Service Department is preparing recipes featuring our beef for the
restaurants and cafés across campus, including menu items for the
Masonic Health Care Center and Freemasons Building. Look for
Masonic Village’s logo on the menu indicating our homegrown beef
is used.
The Orchard View Café, located at the Masonic Village Farm
Market, is serving hamburgers and cheeseburgers made with
Masonic Village beef. You can also purchase frozen beef inside the
market. Vacuum packing and quick freezing the meat allows you to
enjoy juicy meat up to 12 months after purchase.
“We take extreme measures in our cattle care from birth to market,”
Frank Stoltzfus, supervisor of agricultural production, said. “It’s not
about what happens right before; it’s what happens throughout the
life of the animal. We strive to make beef better, not just better beef.”

Director’s Note
Supporting the “Mission of Love” with Talent
by Mark Pagano, director of human resources
Finding, hiring and engaging a workforce that enjoys coming to work, sharing their talents with
co-workers, residents and clients, and knowing they are making a difference in the lives of others
has been our goal. We hope to continue building and supporting a mission minded workforce at
Masonic Village at Elizabethtown.
Over the past several years, Masonic Villages has partnered with the Premier Partners,
a workforce solutions company, to support the recruitment and retention strategy of the
organization. Claudia Stephens, chief human resources and compliance officer, said, “Entering
into a partnership in 2011 with Premier Partners was in anticipation of a decrease in the health
care workforce being projected for ten plus years by the healthcare experts. At the time, Masonic
Villages had a few positions that were difficult to recruit; however, overall we were doing well.
Our purpose was to build our workforce pool and centralize and enhance the process to be more
efficient in our recruiting and employment process.” In support of this, The Bureau of Health
Statistics suggests that over the next five to seven years, the demand for Certified Nursing
Assistants and Home Health Aides will increase by 48 percent while the need for Licensed
Practical Nurses will reach 25 percent in the same time period.
18
The Premier Partners and Masonic Villages Human Resources have collaborated with
department managers to work as a unified team ensuring recruitment and retention initiatives are
continuing to evolve in order to meet current and future demands of the organization. Joe Stirpe,
senior partner for the premier partners states, “Our goal is to deliver a competitive advantage
to Masonic Villages; the strategic and forward thinking leadership of Masonic Villages quickly
embraced an innovative recruitment process which has allowed them to exceed their ability to
hire and retain great people over their competition.”
Both The Premier Partners and Masonic Villages understand the importance this partnership
holds in aligning itself strategically with the staffing needs of the organization. Over the next ten
years, the marketplace will become increasingly challenging, especially because the experts
believe that one out of every nine jobs created in the United States will be for those providing
direct care to their clients. The measures of success that Masonic Villages achieves in its
recruitment and retention efforts will continue to play a significant role in its ability to attract and
retain a mission minded workforce focused on “the mission of love.”

Starring Anthony Hopkins and Diane Ladd. For 25 years in Invercargill at the south end of
New Zealand, Burt Munro has been working on increasing the speed of his motorcycle, a
1920 Indian. He dreams of taking it to the Bonneville Salt Flats to see how fast it will go.
By the early 1960s, heart disease threatens his life, so he mortgages his house and takes
a boat to Los Angeles, buys an old car, builds a makeshift trailer, gets the Indian through
customs, and heads for Utah. Along the way, people he meets are charmed by his open,
direct friendliness. If he makes it to Bonneville, will they let an old guy on the flats with
makeshift tires, no brakes, and no chute? And will the Indian actually respond? This movie is
