Point out how the SelectShift Automatic transmission works in harmony with the 3.5L V6 engine with Ti-VCT. Also take the time to show the customer how the display in the instrument cluster indicates the gear selection. And don’t forget to demonstrate the Manual Mode switch on the transmission shifter handle. SelectShift Manual Mode is a performance feature the Explorer enthusiast customer is sure to appreciate. – To prevent the engine from running at too low an rpm, SelectShift may automatically make some downshifts – Although SelectShift may automatically perform some downshifts, it will allow the driver to downshift at any time as long as the engine will not be damaged from over-revving EPA-estimated Fuel Economy Engine/Transmission FWD City/Hwy. 4WD City/Hwy. 17/25 17/23 3.5L V6/6-speed automatic Explorer Revised January 2011 esourcebook.dealerconnection.com RE&T: 2011 Source Book 11 on this page 2011 Explorer — Components Working Together — Front-wheel Drive (FWD) — Intelligent 4WD with TMS — TMS Functionality — TMS Benefits Performance/Handling Chassis Components Working Together TMS Functionality • Four-wheel independent suspension delivers responsive sports-sedan-like handling • TMS is controlled by a rotary switch located on the center console and offers four settings: • Suspension tuning helps hug the road when cornering –Normal • Braking feels confident and smooth –Mud/Rut • Unibody construction with front and rear subframes helps isolate the body from the suspension and provides a dramatic improvement in driving dynamics –Sand • Lower center of gravity provides greater stability than previous model Front-wheel Drive (FWD) • Weight of engine on front end provides good traction in slippery road conditions Explorer • Allows for a roomy interior package, especially rear-seat leg and foot room –Snow/Gravel/Grass • Normal setting is suitable for driving under normal road and weather conditions • Mud/Rut setting is intended for slippery, muddy, soft or uneven terrain conditions and allows some wheel spin in order to build or maintain momentum • Sand setting is designed for dry sand or deep gravel conditions and optimizes engine torque for increased traction Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System (TMS) • Snow/Gravel/Grass setting is intended for firm surfaces covered in a loose or slippery material and will limited engine torque to maximize available traction • New to Explorer for 2011 TMS Benefits • Available on all models • Delivers four-wheel-drive capability with an easy and intuitively operated control switch Intelligent 4WD Functionality • Uses an electromagnetic activation of an internal clutch pack to provide all-weather traction and is a feature not found on some competitors • Intelligent 4WD is seamless to the driver and provides performance as well as safety benefits • Builds driver confidence • Compared to the previous Explorer 4x4 system, TMS uses no transfer case, weighs less and helps deliver 25 percent better fuel efficiency • Continuously monitors vehicle speed, throttle input, steering angle and wheel slip to seamlessly deliver torque to the appropriate wheel • Helps eliminate torque steer and helps balance the vehicle when cornering • In a curve, the front wheels steer the vehicle to maintain direction as well as propel the vehicle forward • Intelligent 4WD system sends power to the rear wheels, allowing the rear wheels to help propel the vehicle • This helps improve overall handling by allowing the front tires to apply more available traction to steer the vehicle Explorer • For the safety benefits of Intelligent 4WD, see page 17 12 esourcebook.dealerconnection.com RE&T: 2011 Source Book Revised January 2011 Explorer Performance/Handling 2011 on this page — Independent MacPherson Strut Front Susp. — Independent Multi-link Rear Suspension — Rack-and-Pinion Steering Chassis cont’d Independent MacPherson Strut Front Suspension Independent Multi-link Rear Suspension Ride and Handling Features • Multi-link design is built on a robust fully isolated and boxed subframe Strong • Front struts feature a coil-over-shock design with an L-shaped rear-facing lower control arm • Each wheel reacts to road irregularities with no effect on the opposite wheel • Coil-over-shock design locates the shock absorber in the center of the coil spring, which reduces offset and allows the spring and shock to move in precision • Use of high-strength steel combined with coil-overshock design allows the use of lightweight springs • Suspension bushings are tuned independently for responsive steering and a smooth ride • Large bushing at the top of each strut mount helps resist vertical movements from uneven road surfaces and resists side deflection to deliver crisp steering feel • Hydro bushings are tuned to isolate brake and road vibrations from the passenger compartment • Independent suspension design lets each wheel react to road irregularities with no effect on the opposite wheel Ride and Handling Features • Stamped-steel control blades improve suspension tuning • Vertically oriented shocks mounted outboard and behind the wheel center for excellent ride and handling • During heavy braking, the multi-link design causes slight toe-in — which is how much the front part of two opposite wheels point toward the center of the vehicle — helping enhance steering stability • Cast iron knuckles and stabilizer bar designed for rugged use • Strong foundation allows chassis engineers to better tune the suspension components for excellent ride and handling characteristics • Outboard-mounted front stabilizer bar provides precise roll control and steering response Rack-and-pinion Steering Compact Design • Rack-and-pinion steering maintains linear steering effort as the driver turns the wheel. The result is responsive steering that naturally follows a straight line as the wheel is turned • Front struts feature a coil-over-shock design more compact than double-wishbone front suspensions • Quick steering ratio of 15.75:1 means drivers don’t have to turn the wheel very far to go around a tight corner • Isolated perimeter subframe is firmly attached in six locations for added strength and stiffness Explorer – This design also limits twisting or lateral forces that could bind the shock and cause a harsher ride • Shock absorbers are mounted as far outboard as possible — allowing chassis engineers to tune them to handle higher road impacts and deliver an excellent balance of ride and handling • Allows the maximum amount of room in front of the suspension to help improve crash performance • Provides more room in the engine compartment for powertrain components Explorer August 2010 esourcebook.dealerconnection.com RE&T: 2011 Source Book 13 on this page 2011 Explorer — Electric Power-Assisted Steering — Drift Control — Four-wheel Disc Brakes — Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) — Hill Start Assist Performance/Handling Chassis cont’d Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) with Drift Control Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) • EBD sends the optimum amount of braking pressure to the rear brakes at all times under a variety of loads • EPAS is a sophisticated electric speed-sensitive steering-assist system – Offers light, responsive steering feel around town and while parking – At higher speeds, EPAS delivers less steering assist for more confident control • EPAS replaces the hydraulic gear system that pulled power (and efficiency) from the engine via a belt • Helps improve fuel economy and emissions, and eliminate noises common with hydraulic systems • New for Explorer and standard on all engines Drift Control • Whether there’s one person or five people and their gear, EBD ensures the driver can apply the brakes with confidence in all conditions • EBD means fewer occurrences of ABS activation and improved braking under heavy loads, and it allows all four wheels to give optimum braking Hill Start Assist • New for Explorer • Helps keep the vehicle from rolling backward, making it easier to pull away when on a slope or hill with a grade greater than 5 degrees • An automatic system using EPAS to help continuously correct for road irregularities and improve overall steering feel • Activating the system is simple • System is continually “learning” and adapting to steering conditions and compensates for changes that can cause the vehicle to pull left or right – Keep the brake pedal pressed – Assists the steering effort to help the driver maintain a straighter path – Helps driver avoid unwanted lane changes (or drift) • Reduces steering effort required when driving on crowned roads or in heavy side winds Four-wheel Disc Brakes • Large brake rotors provide a large brake swept area and powerful braking • All rotors are vented for excellent fade resistance and consistent braking performance • Brake pads are made of high-friction non-asbestos organic lining material that helps provide outstanding stopping power – Press the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to a complete standstill – If the sensors detect that the vehicle is on a slope, Hill Start Assist is automatically activated • System utilizes an accelerometer to measure the slope and longitudinal incline and automatically operates when a slope of 5 degrees or more is calculated • When Hill Start Assist is activated, the brake pressure is held in the braking system and the vehicle remains stationary on the slope for up to two seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal • Brakes are automatically released once the engine has developed sufficient power to prevent the vehicle from rolling down the slope • Hill Start Assist will not operate when the parking brake is engaged • Feature also works if the vehicle is in Reverse and facing downhill on an incline • Combined with large rotors, the result is confident braking performance in stop-and-go driving or while towing Explorer • Includes standard four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) for responsive, confident stops 14 esourcebook.dealerconnection.com RE&T: 2011 Source Book August 2010 Explorer Performance/Handling 2011 on this page — Towing Capacities — Trailer Sway Control in adverse driving situations or when making evasive maneuvers on slippery pavement • Monitors vehicle’s cornering behavior with steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate sensors, and automatically makes braking and throttle adjustments to match vehicle’s direction to the driver’s intention using Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction Control components • Automatically activates whenever the vehicle is started, but may be turned off for certain situations such as when “rocking” a vehicle stuck in mud or snow NOTE: See the Safety section in the Source Book Appendices or on eSourceBook for more information. Roll Stability Control • RSC is an additional vehicle control software module • Builds on the ABS, Traction Control and yaw control systems of AdvanceTrac to help keep the vehicle tires on the ground by monitoring and helping control vehicle roll rate • Class-exclusive(1) • Works in conjunction with AdvanceTrac with RSC to help drivers maintain control of their vehicle when taking a curve too quickly • Uses sensors to measure roll rate, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, wheel speed and steering wheel angle, and runs calculations based on those inputs 100 times every second • Measures how quickly the vehicle is turning and compares that with how quickly the driver is trying to turn • If the vehicle enters a curve too fast, or the vehicle is not turning as much as the driver is steering, Curve Control responds by rapidly reducing torque and increasing brake pressure to help keep the vehicle under control and help the driver follow the intended path • Is effective on dry or wet pavement, and is expected to be particularly useful when a driver is entering or exiting freeway on- or off-ramps with too much speed NOTE: Please remember that even advanced technologies cannot defy the laws of physics. It is always possible to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver input for the conditions. Encourage safe driving habits to your customers. If unable to pass the slower vehicle, the driver will have to manually intervene to slow the vehicle (e.g., braking, changing cruise control setting, etc.). Now if the vehicle is equipped with adaptive cruise control, the vehicle will automatically slow to match the leading vehicle’s speed at the desired gap distance. If the slower vehicle speeds up, or if the left lane is accessible and the driver changes lanes to pass, the adaptive cruise control system will sense there’s no vehicle ahead and will automatically return to the previously set speed. esourcebook.dealerconnection.com RE&T: 2011 Source Book August 2010 Explorer Comfort/Convenience 2011 on this page — Rear View Camera — Reverse Sensing System — Automatic Headlamps with Wiper Activation — Rain-sensing Windshield Wipers — SecuriCodeTM Keyless Entry Keypad Driver Assistance Technology cont’d Rear View Camera Automatic Headlamps with Wiper Activation • Provides added driver convenience when backing up and is especially useful when parallel parking • Automatically activates the headlamps and taillamps if the wipers are being used — helping the driver see and the vehicle be seen in inclement weather • System automatically engages when the vehicle is placed in Reverse • Camera is located in the liftgate above the license plate • Video is shown on the 8" center stack touch screen with an image providing vehicle centerline, rear bumper orientation and green, yellow and red trajectory lines to relate an object’s proximity to the rear of the vehicle – Pressing the up or down arrow provides access to three different levels of zoom – Image can be zoomed in on an object while keeping the rear bumper in the frame of reference • Once the front wipers are deactivated, the headlamps will automatically turn off Rain-sensing Windshield Wipers • Once the system is turned on, there is no need for the driver to activate, deactivate or adjust the windshield wipers under normal driving conditions – Automatic zoom can also be selected with the up or down arrow icon • When sensors mounted behind the rearview mirror detect moisture on the windshield, the windshield wipers are automatically activated at the appropriate speed to keep the windshield clear – Zoom feature must be re-enabled each time vehicle is placed in Reverse NOTE: System must be turned off before entering an automatic car wash.
