3.5L V6 Engine with Ti-VCT cont’d
Twin independent Variable Cam Timing
(Ti-VCT)
Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-off (ADFSO)
• Allows the camshafts to operate both the intake and
exhaust valves at different times in the combustion
cycle, based on speed and load
• Temporarily interrupts fuel delivery and consumption
when the vehicle normally slows down while
maintaining normal engine operation
• Adjusts cam timing to provide optimum performance
and fuel economy
• System uses the transmission to keep the engine
running at a low, more fuel-efficient operating level
whenever possible
• Helps maximize fuel efficiency
• Outstanding efficiency under low load conditions like
idling or highway cruising
• Remarkable power when accelerating
• Normal fuel delivery resumes when the vehicle reaches
a low speed or when the driver accelerates
• System is automatic and requires no interaction from
the driver
Explorer
• Helps maintain excellent driveability with a
Ford-proprietary software that integrates the fuel
shut-off technology with the powertrain operation
Engineering Insight
Smart Charging Alternator
What Smart Charging Is
• An all-new feature on the
3.5L V6 engine that helps
improve fuel efficiency
• A regenerative electrical
charging system that
optimally charges the
battery instead of having
the alternator charging the
battery anytime the engine
is running
How It Works
• Smart Charging increases alternator output when
the vehicle is braking or decelerating, converting
the moving (kinetic) energy into electric energy
– Since there is no additional engine accessory
belt load to energize the battery, the captured
energy is used to charge the battery and
maintain optimum operating levels of the
electrical system
• Communicates with the ADFSO system to ensure
the battery is being optimally charged
Key Benefits
• Helps the engine
consume less fuel
• Maintains a more
consistent battery
charging level to help:
– Extend battery life
– Maintain reliable engine
start performance
– ADFSO will maintain normal engine operation
during deceleration should the battery require
additional charging

Independent MacPherson Strut
Front Suspension
Independent Multi-link Rear Suspension
Ride and Handling Features
• Multi-link design is built on a robust fully isolated and
boxed subframe
Strong
• Front struts feature a coil-over-shock design with an
L-shaped rear-facing lower control arm
• Each wheel reacts to road irregularities with no effect
on the opposite wheel
• Coil-over-shock design locates the shock absorber in
the center of the coil spring, which reduces offset and
allows the spring and shock to move in precision
• Use of high-strength steel combined with coil-overshock design allows the use of lightweight springs
• Suspension bushings are tuned independently for
responsive steering and a smooth ride
• Large bushing at the top of each strut mount helps
resist vertical movements from uneven road surfaces
and resists side deflection to deliver crisp steering feel
• Hydro bushings are tuned to isolate brake and road
vibrations from the passenger compartment
• Independent suspension design lets each wheel
react to road irregularities with no effect on the
opposite wheel
Ride and Handling Features
• Stamped-steel control blades improve suspension
tuning
• Vertically oriented shocks mounted outboard and
behind the wheel center for excellent ride and handling
• During heavy braking, the multi-link design causes
slight toe-in — which is how much the front part of two
opposite wheels point toward the center of the vehicle
— helping enhance steering stability
• Cast iron knuckles and stabilizer bar designed for
rugged use
• Strong foundation allows chassis engineers to better
tune the suspension components for excellent ride and
handling characteristics
• Outboard-mounted front stabilizer bar provides precise
roll control and steering response
Rack-and-pinion Steering
Compact Design
• Rack-and-pinion steering maintains linear steering
effort as the driver turns the wheel. The result is
responsive steering that naturally follows a straight
line as the wheel is turned
• Front struts feature a coil-over-shock design more
compact than double-wishbone front suspensions
• Quick steering ratio of 15.75:1 means drivers don’t have
to turn the wheel very far to go around a tight corner
• Isolated perimeter subframe is firmly attached in six
locations for added strength and stiffness
Explorer
– This design also limits twisting or lateral forces that
could bind the shock and cause a harsher ride
• Shock absorbers are mounted as far outboard as
possible — allowing chassis engineers to tune them
to handle higher road impacts and deliver an excellent
balance of ride and handling
• Allows the maximum amount of room in front of the
suspension to help improve crash performance
• Provides more room in the engine compartment for
powertrain components

Performance/Handling
Chassis cont’d
Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS)
with Drift Control
Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
• EBD sends the optimum amount of braking pressure to
the rear brakes at all times under a variety of loads
• EPAS is a sophisticated electric speed-sensitive
steering-assist system
– Offers light, responsive steering feel around town
and while parking
– At higher speeds, EPAS delivers less steering assist
for more confident control
• EPAS replaces the hydraulic gear system that pulled
power (and efficiency) from the engine via a belt
• Helps improve fuel economy and emissions, and
eliminate noises common with hydraulic systems
• New for Explorer and standard on all engines
Drift Control
• Whether there’s one person or five people and their
gear, EBD ensures the driver can apply the brakes with
confidence in all conditions
• EBD means fewer occurrences of ABS activation and
improved braking under heavy loads, and it allows all
four wheels to give optimum braking
Hill Start Assist
• New for Explorer
• Helps keep the vehicle from rolling backward, making it
easier to pull away when on a slope or hill with a grade
greater than 5 degrees
• An automatic system using EPAS to help continuously
correct for road irregularities and improve overall
steering feel
• Activating the system is simple
• System is continually “learning” and adapting to
steering conditions and compensates for changes that
can cause the vehicle to pull left or right
– Keep the brake pedal pressed
– Assists the steering effort to help the driver maintain
a straighter path
– Helps driver avoid unwanted lane changes (or drift)
• Reduces steering effort required when driving on
crowned roads or in heavy side winds
Four-wheel Disc Brakes
• Large brake rotors provide a large brake swept area
and powerful braking
• All rotors are vented for excellent fade resistance and
consistent braking performance
• Brake pads are made of high-friction non-asbestos
organic lining material that helps provide outstanding
stopping power
– Press the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to a
complete standstill
– If the sensors detect that the vehicle is on a slope,
Hill Start Assist is automatically activated
• System utilizes an accelerometer to measure the slope
and longitudinal incline and automatically operates
when a slope of 5 degrees or more is calculated
• When Hill Start Assist is activated, the brake pressure
is held in the braking system and the vehicle remains
stationary on the slope for up to two seconds after the
driver releases the brake pedal
• Brakes are automatically released once the engine has
developed sufficient power to prevent the vehicle from
rolling down the slope
• Hill Start Assist will not operate when the parking
brake is engaged
• Feature also works if the vehicle is in Reverse and
facing downhill on an incline
• Combined with large rotors, the result is confident
braking performance in stop-and-go driving or
while towing
Explorer
• Includes standard four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System
(ABS) for responsive, confident stops

Accident Avoidance
AdvanceTrac with RSC
(Roll Stability Control)
Curve Control
• Class-exclusive(2)
• An electronic stability control system that helps the
driver maintain vehicle stability in adverse driving
situations or when making evasive maneuvers on
slippery pavement
• Monitors vehicle’s cornering behavior with steering
angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate sensors, and
automatically makes braking and throttle adjustments
to match vehicle’s direction to the driver’s intention
using Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction
Control components
• Automatically activates whenever the vehicle is started,
but may be turned off for certain situations such as
when “rocking” a vehicle stuck in mud or snow
NOTE: See the Safety section in the Source Book
Appendices or on eSourceBook for more information.
Roll Stability Control
• RSC is an additional vehicle control software module
• Builds on the ABS, Traction Control and yaw control
systems of AdvanceTrac to help keep the vehicle tires
on the ground by monitoring and helping control
vehicle roll rate
• Class-exclusive(1)
• Works in conjunction with AdvanceTrac with RSC to
help drivers maintain control of their vehicle when
taking a curve too quickly
• Uses sensors to measure roll rate, yaw rate, lateral
acceleration, wheel speed and steering wheel angle,
and runs calculations based on those inputs 100 times
every second
• Measures how quickly the vehicle is turning and compares
that with how quickly the driver is trying to turn
• If the vehicle enters a curve too fast, or the vehicle is not
turning as much as the driver is steering, Curve Control
responds by rapidly reducing torque and increasing
brake pressure to help keep the vehicle under control
and help the driver follow the intended path
• Is effective on dry or wet pavement, and is expected
to be particularly useful when a driver is entering or
exiting freeway on- or off-ramps with too much speed
NOTE: Please remember that even advanced technologies
cannot defy the laws of physics. It is always possible
to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver
input for the conditions. Encourage safe driving habits
to your customers.
Traction Control
• Uses a combination of brake and/or engine control to
maximize available traction on slippery or loose driving
surfaces at any speed
Explorer
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
(1) Visit IIHS.org for additional information.
(2) Class is three-row large utility.

• Helps drivers to maintain steering control in
emergency or other hard-braking situations
• Electronically “pumps” the brakes several times per
second when the computer-controlled sensors indicate
wheel lockup during hard braking
• Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) automatically
balances the front-to-rear brake force distribution to
reduce the tendency for rear-wheel lockup and optimize
braking performance according to vehicle load of
passengers and/or cargo

— Hill Descent Control
— Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Accident Avoidance cont’d
Brake Assist
Hill Descent Control
• Recognizes when the brake pedal is applied suddenly
but without enough force to provide full deceleration
• Standard on 4WD models
• With brake assist, the system engages the appropriate
pressure to maximize vehicle deceleration and help
reduce stopping distances
• Without the brake assist feature, the result could be
a longer stopping distance than desired
• Once the driver releases the brake pedal, the vehicle
returns to normal braking mode
Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management
System (TMS)
• Available on all models
• System automatically engages as road and weather
conditions warrant
• Does not require the driver to actively engage/
disengage the system
• Continuously monitors wheel speed, throttle position
and steering angle to determine the vehicle’s conditions
and driver’s intent
• System then determines the optimal amount of
front and rear torque for the given conditions to not
only reduce wheel slip but to prevent the slip from
occurring in the first place, which helps keep the
vehicle surefooted in a variety of conditions — slippery
surfaces and anything that compromises traction
Key Benefits
• Delivers four-wheel-drive capability with an easy and
intuitively operated control switch
• Builds driver confidence
• Hill Descent Control allows the driver to set and
maintain vehicle speed while descending steep grades
in various surface conditions
• Hill Descent Control can be set to maintain vehicle
speeds on downhill grades between 3 miles per hour
and 20 miles per hour. Above 20 miles per hour, the
system remains armed, once engaged, but descent
speed cannot be set or maintained
• To enable:
– Press and release the Hill Descent Control button
located in the center of the Terrain Management
System control knob. The button will illuminate and
a chime will sound, indicating the system is active
– To increase descent speed, press the accelerator
pedal until the desired speed is attained. To decrease
descent speed, press the brake pedal until the
desired speed is attained
– Once desired vehicle speed is attained, remove
pressure from the accelerator or brake pedal and
chosen vehicle speed will be maintained
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
• Sensor-based system alerts the driver to significant
underinflation in any of the tires, excluding the spare
• Pressure sensors in the valve stems detect actual
tire pressure and activate a warning light in the
vehicle’s instrument cluster when a tire is significantly
underinflated

Cross-traffic Alert
• Warns the driver of approaching vehicles when slowly

BLIS
– Mirror indicator is illuminated and a series of tones
are sounded if an oncoming vehicle is detected
• Alerts the driver if another vehicle is detected
entering the “blind zone” by utilizing two radar
sensors located behind each rear wheel and
concealed by the rear fascia
• Blind zone extends from the rearview mirrors rearward
to approximately 10 feet behind the rear bumper
• Each exterior rearview mirror is equipped with an
amber indicator light
• System will not be activated by an overtaken/passed
vehicle unless that vehicle remains in the zone for
more than 3 seconds
• System is automatically engaged when the vehicle
is placed in Drive and is not designed to detect
pedestrians or cyclists
• System can be turned off through the MyFord TouchTM
left instrument cluster screen but defaults to “on” when
the vehicle is restarted
• If a radar sensor becomes blocked by wet snow or
mud, the blind spot alert indicators will illuminate

will display:
– CLEAN RADAR — SEE MANUAL
– Depending on the direction in which an approaching
vehicle is detected, the MyFord Touch left instrument
cluster screen will display:
• VEHICLE COMING FROM LEFT

Collision Warning with Brake Support
• Uses sensors in the front of the vehicle to help detect
vehicles moving and traveling in the same direction
• If the system determines there is a risk of a collision,
based on the location of the lead vehicle and how
quickly the vehicles are closing, the driver is warned
• The driver is alerted — simultaneously — with a red
LED (Light-Emitting Diode) “heads-up” display on
the windshield and audible warning tone, which also
mutes the audio system
• If the risk of a collision increases, despite the warnings,
the brakes are immediately pre-charged so they can
respond quickly when the driver applies them —
helping the driver achieve maximum braking as
quickly as possible
• Works in conjunction with forward sensors and
Reverse Sensing System to help drivers avoid any
obstacle directly in front of or behind the vehicle
• To activate the system, drivers press the active park
assist button located on the left side of the instrument
panel below the headlamp switch
• Once activated, the MyFord Touch center stack touch
screen will display SEARCHING FOR PARKING SPACE
ON RIGHT (LEFT) SIDE
– Sensors located in the front and rear fascias “look”
for adequately sized parking spaces on either side
of the road
– The turn signal is used to designate which side of
the road to search. If the turn signal is not used, the
system will automatically search the passenger side
– System scans the spaces, measuring for the size of
the openings
– When an available, adequately sized parking space
is identified, active park assist alerts the driver by
displaying PARKING SPACE FOUND ON RIGHT
(LEFT) SIDE, PULL FORWARD TO PARK in the touch
screen, followed by a chime
– Once the driver has stopped the vehicle and the
vehicle is in position to begin parking, the touch
screen displays REMOVE HANDS FROM STEERING
WHEEL, SHIFT TO “R” TO PARK ON RIGHT (LEFT)
• Active park assist works in conjunction with the Electric
Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) to take control of the
steering input while the driver continues to control
the accelerator, brakes and transmission (Forward or
Reverse) slowly easing into the parking space – helping
take the tension out of parallel parking
• The active park assist maneuver may be cancelled at
any time by the driver by manually moving the steering
wheel or pressing the APA dash-mounted switch
Explorer
make the poiNT: Adaptive Cruise Control
26
When describing adaptive cruise control, share this scenario: A driver traveling in the right lane of a two-lane
expressway has set the cruise control at the speed limit and approaches a vehicle traveling slightly under the speed
limit. If unable to pass the slower vehicle, the driver will have to manually intervene to slow the vehicle (e.g., braking,
changing cruise control setting, etc.). Now if the vehicle is equipped with adaptive cruise control, the vehicle will
automatically slow to match the leading vehicle’s speed at the desired gap distance. If the slower vehicle speeds up, or
if the left lane is accessible and the driver changes lanes to pass, the adaptive cruise control system will sense there’s
no vehicle ahead and will automatically return to the previously set speed.

Be sure to fully understand the functionality of the
Easy Fuel capless fuel filler and present the benefits
during a demonstration drive and at delivery. Show the
customer how it’s different than a traditional system,
including the fuel door seal. In addition, be sure to
show the customer where the emergency funnel is
located in the vehicle — it is stored near the spare tire
jack — since the funnel is required for the customer to
add fuel from a portable container.
• A standard-size unleaded fuel nozzle inserts directly
into the filler neck, opening a spring-loaded door
to the tank
• No more dirty hands since there is no cap to fumble
with — and a rubber seal on the fuel filler door helps
keep dirt from entering the Easy Fuel filler opening
• Helps reduce fuel tank evaporative emissions by
eliminating the potential for customers to drive off
with a missing or improperly installed gas cap
• An emergency funnel is included and is required to
properly open the Easy Fuel filler opening to accept
fuel from a gas can or other secondary refueling
device. The funnel is stored near the spare tire jack.

HD RadioTM
iTunes Tagging
What It Is
• iTunes tagging capability is included with HD Radio
functionality on the Sony® audio system
• HD Radio Technology is your local AM and FM stations,
now broadcasting in digital
• HD Radio offers new extra local FM channels,
crystal-clear sound, more music, news and sports —

all subscription free
• Nearly 2,000 AM and FM stations across the nation
currently broadcast with HD Radio Technology
• Visit www.hdradio.com to learn more
• Pushing the TAG button on the MyFord Touch™
8" screen while listening to HD Radio allows customer
to store song information in the radio memory
• Up to 100 songs can be tagged and stored
• When customers connect their iPod® to the vehicle,
the tagged music information automatically transfers
to the iPod
• HD Radio is not satellite or “high-definition” radio
• HD Radio signals are local programming and have
signal strength limitations
– Tagged playlist allows customers to preview,
and if desired, download or purchase the music
from iTunes
Explorer
• iPod stores the tagged music in a playlist until the
customers sync their iPod to iTunes
What HD Radio Is Not
How It Works
• HD Radio Technology products work the same way as
conventional radio, with a signal broadcast by a station
and received by consumers in a specific area
• However, instead of sending one analog signal, HD
Radio stations send a bundled signal made up of both
analog and digital signals
• The digital signal is compressed, and when received
by an HD Radio receiver, the signal is decoded into as
many as three separate channels, each with unique
programming, including additional or alternative
format music, news, traffic and sports
• Because the signal is digital, sound quality is
significantly superior to traditional radio, virtually
eliminating buzzing, static and popping
Key Benefits
• Customers will enjoy an enhanced audio experience
• Some HD Radio attributes include:
–iTunes®(1) tagging
– Crystal-clear static-free reception
– FM broadcast with CD-like quality
– AM broadcast quality approaching current FM
broadcast quality
– Data displayed on-screen such as song, artist,
breaking news, weather alerts, sports scores and
much more
Explorer
– HD2/HD3 channels featuring innovative content/
alternative station programming

Explorer
Also known as four-wheel-down towing, it refers to towing a vehicle
with all four of its wheels on the ground — for example, when towing
a vehicle behind a motorhome. All Explorer models can be neutral
towed. ONLY Explorer FWD models can be dolly towed (front wheels
OFF the ground). NEVER dolly tow a Explorer with Intelligent 4WD.
See the vehicle Owner’s Guide for complete details.
