WELCOME TO KILKENNY KIDS! aND LIFE!
Kilkenny Kids! and Life! brings together the thirteenth edition of Kilkenny Kids! with its
adult equivalent, Kilkenny Life! in our new-look single publication. We hope you will agree
that Kilkenny Kids! and Life! is packed with information to help everyone get the most
out of life in Kilkenny City and County. If you are looking for ways to enhance your quality
of life by becoming involved in new activities that are locally based and by trying to feel
more a part of the place in which you live – this is the booklet for you!
As some people will have needs that are particular to them, please check with providers
to see whether all can participate in activities listed. Some activities included are free but
others will have a charge, so please check before you make your plans. We have included
costs for some of the entries, but in most cases this hasn’t been detailed.

Butler Gallery, the leading contemporary art gallery in the South East of Ireland, runs

Grennan Mill Craft School
Courses in Art, Craft and Design and Professional Arts Practice. Aims to equip students

Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA)
The Bantracht na Tuaithe, the Kilkenny and County federation of ICA, has several hundred
members in 19 guilds, with an ethos based on friendship with women and further education.
Hand crafts, computers and all of the old traditional Irish crafts are our main activities.
Classes in computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, gardening, flower arranging,
swimming and physical fitness may also be available. Visits to An Grianán in Co Louth,
ICA’s Adult Education College, are arranged. Members go on weekend trips and there is
an annual international trip. There is a hand-craft week in March every year. Meetings are
held once a month, some guilds hold craft nights weekly.

MADE in Kilkenny Craft Trail
‘MADE in Kilkenny’ formed to foster excellence in crafts in Co Kilkenny, to encourage
the growth of the professional craft industry and to promote the County as a shopping
destination for authentic, handmade craft. All the craftspeople work using both traditional
and modern techniques. The ‘MADE in Kilkenny’ brochure may be used as a guide, for
a day out visiting various craft shops in Kilkenny’s scenic countryside and historical city.

County Kilkenny VEC Adult Guidance Service
This service provides individuals and groups with information and guidance to assist them
making choices in relation to educational and career options. While based in Kilkenny City,
an outreach guidance service is provided throughout the county.
Free and confidential service that is friendly, relaxed, impartial and supportive. Through
the guidance process adults have an opportunity to explore their interests, aptitudes
and preferences for education and employment. Guidance Counsellors can also provide
assistance with CV preparation, application forms, interview techniques and supports.

KASES (Kilkenny/Carlow Area Supported Employability Service)
A free and confidential service available to employers, employees and jobseekers. KASES
is a Department of Social Protection funded initiative that enables and empowers people
with varying abilities who require extra support or those with a disability or an illness to
search for employment in the open labour market. We prepare people to access and
maintain employment while also assisting them to integrate into the staff team. We are
also available to those who are in paid employment and need support to sustain their role.

Cycle Trails
Two cycle trails have been developed by Trail Kilkenny.
The North Kilkenny Cycle Route (83km) begins in Ballycallan and passes through
Tullaroan, Freshford, Ballyragget, Castlecomer and finishes at Ballycallan. The route is
mainly along quiet country roads.
The East Kilkenny Cycle Route (65km approx) begins at Bennettsbridge and takes in
Graiguenamanagh, The Rower, Inistioge, Thomastown and ends back at Bennettsbridge.
Signs are up along both routes but the mapboards and route guides have not yet been
completed.

Barnstorm Theatre Company
Ireland’s leading producer of professional theatre for children and young people has built

Kilkenny’s brightest performing arts school. Starlight runs classes in Ballycallan, Callan,
Castlecomer, Mullinahone and our home base in the Dancewise Studios, Newpark

Dyslexia Association Ireland (DAI)
Aims to promote awareness of Specific Learning Disability (SLD/Dyslexia) and to serve

older people provided by trained older volunteers for the price of a local call anywhere in

Fáilte Isteach, a Third Age programme provides classes in conversational English to nonIrish nationals throughout Ireland. Fáilte Isteach now has over 50 centres.
Third age National advocacy Programme provides volunteer advocates to nursing
homes throughout Ireland to the benefit of residents, families and nursing home staff.
An advocate helps a resident express their wishes and achieve their entitlements. All
volunteer advocates have participated in induction and on-going training, are supported
by the Advocacy Development Officer, undertake supervision and have Garda clearance.

Befriending Service for Older Persons Living Alone
Kilkenny & Carlow Contact is a Community Voluntary Organisation working
specifically with Older People in the Kilkenny & Carlow area.
We recruit volunteers to visit on a weekly basis, older people
living alone, who may be experiencing isolation and loneliness.
“Many older people, who live alone or are housebound, benefit from the support offered
by our Befriending Service. A team of specially trained volunteer befrienders pay
regular weekly visits to some of the most vulnerable older people in our communities”.
We also act as a support & advocacy service to the older people by networking with
groups & agencies in their own local communities i.e. Gardai, community alert, social
clubs, day centres, and health professionals to enable the person to live securely &
independently in their own home.

Back to Education Initiative (BTEI)
BTEI provides free FETAC accredited part-time learning opportunities for young people
and adults who meet the eligibility criteria. Priority is given to those with less than Leaving
Certificate standard of education. Unwaged participants with Leaving Certificate standard
of education who are in receipt of a Social Welfare Payment and/or Medical Card and/or
signing for credits are also eligible to take part free of charge. Programmes are offered
throughout the City and County, and are offered throughout the year on a flexible part-time
basis in the mornings, afternoons, evenings or at weekends. Modules/programmes on

Community Education
This service facilitates and supports community based learning in locations throughout
the City and County. Its aim is to encourage adults to return to learning in their own local
communities. Subjects include personal development, art, sign language, crafts, computer

run for 6 to 10 weeks and the VEC assists funding a tutor or facilitator. A minimum number

HISTORY
Dúchas
Dúchas, Tullaherin Heritage Society, was founded in 1991. Its aims are to research and
record the wealth of history and folklore of the Tullaherin area in order to foster among the

months, tours are organised to sites of historical interest throughout the South-East. Nonmembers are welcome. The Society also organises a series of lectures during the winter

Black Abbey
Founded in 1225 this is one of Ireland’s oldest churches and is still in use by the Dominicans
by whom it was founded. Look out for the excellent examples of modern and antique
stained glass windows, the wooden roof and the stonework. Nearby on Abbey St is the last
existing remnant of the entrance gate in the medieval city walls.

Duiske Abbey
An early Cistercian (1204) Abbey. Look out for the large effigy of the knight, known locally
as the “Crusader” and the early medieval floor tiles. There is also an Abbey Visitor Centre

to 1pm, closed at weekends.

Said to be the finest Cistercian monastic ruins in Ireland. Of particular note are the superb
cloisters, some very early effigies and the east rose window. There is a visitor centre,
accessible for disabled people, with exhibition and guide service.

Kilkenny Castle
A 12th century castle, remodelled in Victorian times and set in extensive parkland. Was the
principal seat of the Butler family. Two wings of the Castle have been restored to their 19th
century splendour and include a library, drawing room and the magnificent long gallery.
The final phase of restoration is complete and includes a state of the art conference centre
which is situated in one of the castle’s 12th century towers. The River wing also houses the
Butler Gallery of contemporary art.
Accessibility: Parts of the Castle may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.

St Canice’s Cathedral
Impressive Cathedral, completed in 1285. The second longest Cathedral in Ireland. Look
out for the small-scale model of the city, as it was in 1640.

The Cathedral has an excellent example of a ninth century round tower. The climb to the
top is well worth it for a bird’s eye view of Kilkenny, although the steps are very steep and
there are plenty of them, so be warned! The round tower can only be climbed by people
over 12 yrs of age and they must have a parent/guardian with them. Open April to October,

Ballykeeffe Quarry
Rock climbing on the quarry face is a very popular pastime. Climbers from all over
Ireland come throughout the year to sample the multitude of climbs. There is a booklet
of the various climbs available in “The Pound” pub in Ballycallan (only open in evenings).
Climbing can take place at any time but evenings and weekends are the most popular.
Various outdoor activity/adventure groups use the quarry for training purposes during
day-time. For safety reasons, there should be at least two climbers in the quarry when
participating in the sport. Solo climbers can often arrange to meet with other climbers

ICA (Irish Country Women’s Association)
The Bantracht na Tuaithe, the Kilkenny and County federation of ICA, has several
hundred members in 19 guilds, with an ethos based on friendship with women and
further education. Hand crafts, computers and all of the old traditional Irish crafts are our
main activities. Classes in computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, gardening, flower
arranging, swimming and physical fitness may also be available. Visits to An Grianán
in Co Louth, ICA’s Adult Education College, are arranged. Members go on weekend
trips and there is an annual international trip. There is a hand-craft week in March every
year. Meetings are held once a month, some guilds hold craft nights weekly.

A wide variety of activities available for people with physical disabilities. The Resource
and Outreach Centre is open 11am to 4pm, five days per week, and also runs evening
and weekend programmes. As well as social activities, courses offered include, FETAC
courses, Pottery, Arts & Crafts, Reflexology, Music and Drama, Skills Development, Health
and Well-being, Self-Defence, Archery. There are day trips and table quizzes with other
groups. Sporting activities: Basketball and Boccia tournaments. Computer courses are

The Men’s Shed
The Men’s Shed is a social outlet for men and they share their different skills. Having just
celebrated its first birthday, the Good Shepherd Centre’s Men’s Shed is now offering to

Known as “Men’s Shed Helping Hands,” the idea is that the members are available to
carry out some handy work – e.g. mowing the lawn, putting up shelves, painting a door etc.

Woodstock
Woodstock Gardens and arboretum are located in Inistioge, Co Kilkenny, overlooking the
picturesque River Nore valley. The gardens were once regarded as one of the greatest
gardens of Ireland created in the Victorian style and represent the gardens created by
Colonel William Tighe and his wife, Lady Louisa, in the mid-1800s.
Following the burning of Woodstock House during the Civil War in 1922, the gardens fell into
disrepair and were largely forgotten until an ambitious scheme of restoration was undertaken
by Kilkenny County Council and the local community under the Great Gardens of Ireland
Restoration Scheme. Woodstock is now a top visitor destination in the South East.

Features to see include the flower terraces, flanked by a re-created Turner conservatory,
which is home to our tea shop (open during the summer months). Our walled garden is a
productive garden, where many varieties of fruits, vegetables and flowers are once again
grown. Visit our rose garden which contains many fantastic old Victorian varieties of roses.
Also visit our famous Monkey Puzzle and Noble Fir walks and many rare and interesting
trees from all over the world in our arboretum.
We are surrounded by the wooded Woodstock Estate where you can take a variety of
tranquil woodland walks along the River Nore. A children’s playground has recently been
added. Children’s explorer pack available. Guided tours by prior arrangement.

hill. Continue along this access road for approx ½km to car park.
WILDLIFE
Birdwatch Ireland
The Kilkenny branch of Birdwatch Ireland organises regular outings to places such as the
Wexford Slobs and local woods, as well as slideshows and talks. Meet on the first Thursday
and third or fourth Sunday of the month from September to May, except December and
January. The main event of the year is the annual dawn chorus in Jenkinstown woods on
the third Sunday in May. Meet at 4.30am for guided walk through the woods. Outings are
also organised for Heritage Week during the last week in August. Look out for details of all
outings on the website, the local press and on local radio.

Youth Clubs affiliated to Ossory Youth
The purpose of a local youth club is to provide a safe and comfortable place where young
people from the area can meet and socialise together. Youth clubs operate one night a
week for two hours. The venue is usually the community hall/centre and a team of local

The club programme is varied and includes sport, music, song, dance, outings, talks,

Childminders (Private, home based childcare services)
The Childcare (Pre-school Services) Regulations 2006 state that a childminder should
look after no more than 5 pre-school children, including his/her own at any one time.
If a childminder meets this criteria they are obliged to notify with the HSE. However if a
childminder is caring for 3 pre-school children or less they can avail of the Voluntary
Notification System put in place by the County Childcare Committee. This system of
notification is dealt with by their local Childminding Advisory Officer within the County
Childcare Committee.

Childcare Funding Schemes
There are three childcare funding schemes currently available in Ireland, all of which are funded through the Department of
Children & Youth Affairs
The Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) Scheme gives children access to a free Pre School Year of appropriate
programme based activities in the year before they start primary school. All childcare and early education services in Kilkenny
offer this scheme.
The Community Childcare Subvention (CCS) Scheme enables community childcare services to offer parents who are
in receipt of social welfare payments a reduction in their childcare fees. This scheme is available in community childcare
services only.
The Childcare Education & Training Support (CETS) Scheme provides participants availing of certain FAS and VEC
training courses with a childcare place for the duration of their course. This is available in some community and private
services.

L’ARCHE
L’Arche is a group of over 130 worldwide communities where people with and without
intellectual disabilities share life together in community. There are plenty of opportunities to
become involved as an occasional volunteer. Help prepare a meal in one of the homes or

office. Or just be a friend to one of our core members or assistants.

St Luke’s General Hospital Kilkenny
The Volunteer Service at St Luke’s General Hospital aims to assist and support members
of the public when visiting the hospital. The main role of volunteers is to provide a
friendly welcome by assisting and guiding visitors and patients to the various wards,
departments and clinics in the hospital. Volunteers also visit patients, do bedside reading,
text messaging, fetch newspapers/beverages and man information stands. St Luke’s also
offers members of the public the opportunity to give feedback on hospital services through
their Patient Partnership and Pediatric Focus Groups.

Samaritans
Samaritans is a voluntary listening charity supporting people in all sorts of crisis that cause
emotional upset. The service provides non-judgemental, confidential, emotional support
to people experiencing distress or despair, including suicidal feelings. They are available
24hrs a day, 7 days a week and encourage people in need of support to get in touch. They
recruit new volunteers twice a year in the spring and autumn. Training is essential and is
conducted over a six month period and there is continuous on-going training. Volunteers
commit to doing one 3 hour duty per week and also a regular overnight duty. Commitment
and confidentiality are the cornerstones of the Samaritan organisation. For an application

SOS is a voluntary organisation for adults with a mild to moderate intellectual disability.
SOS provides day services, respite and residential care. We are looking for families to
provide short breaks in their home for adults from our services, nominal expenses are
paid. We are also looking for volunteers to befriend adults in our services, thus supporting
us in providing extra social and recreational activities.

Word Aid
Word Aid, the Co Kilkenny Adult Learning Scheme is a free confidential service that
supports adults with reading, writing, spelling or maths difficulties. Word Aid holds a tutor
training course for volunteers annually. They require volunteers to give 2 hours of their
time each week, have a sympathetic and understanding nature, be good listeners and
have the ability to work with others on a confidential basis.

Connected Strategies for Sustainable Communities
Kilkenny LEADER Partnership (KLP) is the non-profit organisation driving
community development and rural enterprise in the city and county of
Kilkenny. The aim of KLP is to empower local communities to increase their
quality of life by providing information, assistance, support and training.
KLP has a set of one to one supports for people who are unemployed,
including job search workshops, cv preparation, work experience placement
projects and linkage on to training programmes.
Grant assistance is also available under the Rural Development Programme to
support the development of rural enterprises.
