Although we did return home with some medals, I also brought back some inspirational memories that I would like to share. Community Association Membership Application Surname: ___________________________________ The goal of the Games is to “Promote Worldwide Peace, Health and Friendship”. The games bring together people who have a love of athletic competition as well as a desire to be healthy and active. In my personal experience, I met some amazing athletes. A 90 year-old man ran both the 10 and 5 km races and a 90 year-old woman ran the 5 km race. We should all be so lucky to be able to do such things at that age! A band was playing at the social following the 5 km race and many of the competitors who were over 80 were dancing. One lady requested a polka! The BCA was able to secure a public meeting with the City Planning Dept., our City Councillor’office, Lupi Construction, and Norr Architects. The meeting is Wednesday, November, 25 at the Brentwood Elementary School gym from 6:30-8:30 pm. The school is located at 1231 Northmount Drive NW. We hope to pack the gym! Esso Lot Proposed Rezoning By Twyla Freer The Brentwood Board Room was packed for a neighborhood info meeting held in October regarding the proposed rezoning of the old Esso lot at Northmount and Brisebois Drives. In fact, the turnout was so great that two presentations were given over the course of the 2 hours to roughly 100 residents. What prompted such a showing of support? From the chatter in the room, it was clear that Brentwoodians care about their neighborhood and they want to be informed. Our City had posted small signs with tight deadlines to inform folks about the proposed re-zoning. So in the hopes of adding clarity, a small group of neighbors quickly pulled together a meeting to provide the details and to alert residents that a Development Permit had been submitted to the City Planning Department for review. This Development Permit application is a request to rezone this parcel of land to allow for a 50 foot (15 meter) Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê 6 OPEN HOUSE NORTHMOUNT DRIVE AND BRISEBOIS DRIVE Please come and discuss the development that is proposed for the corner of Northmount Drive & Brisebois Drive (former Esso gas station site). A call to action was made at the meeting to encourage residents to spread the word and to send in their emails to the City Planning Department. The community response was heard loud and strong which resulted in a deadline extension. Your comments may be submitted up to November 28 to [email protected] Great things happen when people come together! Ê building – the equivalent of 5 storeys- that will have a mix of retail space, offices and apartments. The current zoning permits 30 foot (10 meters) – equal to 3 storeys. The height of the proposed re-zoning raises major concerns such as shadowing, loss of privacy, not enough parking, and traffic congestion. This space is right in the heart of our GREAT neighborhood and although most of us agree that we do need something built on that lot…it should be reasonable staying within the current zoning while adding value. Even after the Nov. 28 deadline, residents should still write to City Council and to the Mayor and to the Brentwood Community Association to express their thoughts on this proposed re-zoning. The relevant email addresses are: City Councillors : [email protected] – One email to this address will reach all Councillors. Use the Subject Line – Please forward to all Councillors. Mayor Nenshi : [email protected] Brentwood Community Association: brntwdca@ telus.net. Use the Subject Line – Please forward to Bonita McCurry, Kirk Osadetz, Eric Lemee. By Lee Hunt Congratulations to Calgary ballerina Gabrielle Gregg who recently competed in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Genée Awards. The Genées were inaugurated in 1931 and are held annually. This year, the competition was held in London, England from Sept. 10 – 19. Gabrielle – now age 16 – began her dancing career at age 2! Much of her dance training has been at the McDonald Wilson Dance Academy located right here in Brentwood (in our “Old Community Hall”). Gabrielle attained her Solo Seal in dance in March of this year and dances under the coaching and guidance of Shannon Bachynski. In London, Gabrielle was one of 79 competitors. She performed two dance pieces – Variation 1 which is a piece choreographed by Alberta Ballet’s Yukichi Hattori exclusively for Gabrielle at Shannon’s request and Variation 2 which is from the ballet “Raymonda” – the Paris Opera version. Gabrielle advanced to the semifinals. Though she did not make it into the final, Gabrielle was selected to perform at various venues around London and had professional photo shoots at a number of London landmarks. In addition to her ballet accomplishments, Gabrielle also finds time to take piano lessons and to compete in running sports. Oh – and she also somehow finds time to complete her high school courses at Rundle College! Congratulations to both Gabrielle and Shannon on this impressive international recognition! My thanks to McDonald Wilson Dance Academy for assistance with this article. BCA Seniors’ Tea News By Dorothy Haeberle At the October 22 Tea we again received massages and Reiki therapy from Josee Galipeau from Ultimate Pain Relief Massage Therapy. Thanks again Josee for your heavenly touch! Twenty-two students from the Grade 5-6 class at Captain John Palliser also attended our tea to interview and socialize with the seniors. The students are developing their communication skills and everyone enjoyed the interaction with them. At our December 17 Seniors’ Tea, we will again be entertained by the music class from Captain John Palliser. We will also be decorating cookies with the students. They are baking sugar cookies at school and will bring them to decorate. Tea organizers will also provide gingerbread cookies for decorating. We look forward to having the students back at our Tea. We wish everyone in the community a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Avocados have the highest calories of any fruit at 167 calories per hundred grams. Coffin School is working to rejuvenate the existing playground. This project will involve resurfacing the current playground and adding a few new structures to enhance play. For more information or to join the committee please email Larysa at [email protected]. Brentwood Email Contact List There have been a number of issues of importance to Brentwood residents recently. These include the proposal for secondary suites and the currently evolving proposed rezoning of the lot at the corner of Brisebois and Northmount (former Esso station). Unfortunately there is no effective way of quickly communicating these issues to community members or for getting replies back. Several people have suggested that an email contact list be compiled to allow timely sharing of important information. Joan and Ashton Embry, who have resided in Brentwood for 37 years and have had recent police checks connected to volunteering at their grandchildren’s schools, have volunteered to compile such a list. This list will be managed by Brentwood community residents, Joan and Ashton Embry, not by the BCA. If you would like to be on this list, please email the Embrys at [email protected]. All communications will be sent through blinded copy and the contact information will not be shared with anyone. Did you know that there is a Facebook group and a Twitter account dedicated to bringing together our community? Use the Twitter profile @BrentwoodYYC to get connected. The “Brentwood Community” group on Facebook, has been replaced by a new page. Having lost her husband and 6 of her children, Davidson, then aged 68, decided to move to Calgary where some of her other family members resided. Struck by the total absence of a public library in Calgary, Davidson set out in 1907 to change that. She was able to convince American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to provide $50,000 to construct Calgary’s first library. But… it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Carnegie set as a pre-condition that one in ten Calgary men (since only males were permitted to vote back then) had to sign a petition in support of such an endeavour. That was a challenge, but Davidson managed it in 1908. As a result, the Carnegie Library (called Memorial Park Library) opened in 1912. We are all grateful for Davidson’s giant efforts as she “taught us to dream, pushed us to try, helped us to achieve the power of our dreams”. This story was brought to life in the Cowtown Opera Company’s abridged production of “Annie Davidson” performed at Nose Hill Library on Oct. 24. It is my understanding that the opera was also performed at 7 other branches across the city. The Nose Hill Natural Environment Management Plan guides the Calgary Parks Department in reclaiming many of the previously disturbed areas in the park as well as many of the park’s informal routes. Attempts are being made to close these routes and rehabilitate the surface, stabilize soil and bring the site back to a natural vegetated state. However, success depends on not only closing trails but redirecting use to appropriate areas, in addition to educating users on park use and management goals. These goals are outlined in the Nose Hill Trail and Pathway Plan, which calls for a comprehensive and integrated approach to park and pathway planning in order to more effectively deal with trail closures: a)a designated trail and pathway system for the entire park b)well-marked and formally constructed trails and pathways c)a restoration strategy for closed informal trails d)designation of appropriate trails and pathways for all uses The plan is to close and rehabilitate all informal routes not in the designated routing system. Informal routes were closed and identified by the use of appropriate obstacles and appropriate signage. Designated routes are defined through surfacing, trail markers, and ori- I wish to extend my sincere appreciation for all of the support this community has shown to me and to our family over the past many years. I am so very proud to now represent you as your Member of Parliament and to provide what support I can back to the community. The first week of November will be one of orientation and formalization of roles in Ottawa as well as learning parameters of roles and responsibilities. While one has some idea of responsibility, the details and depth of roles will give substance to my performance on your behalf. During this week we will also have the major responsibility of selecting an Interim Leader for the Conservative Party of Canada. Over the next few weeks I will also be working to confirm an office location and with a firm address, the phone and email contacts can be circulated for information. I am excited to be your representative, energized to do you proud and committed to the responsibility in front of me. I thank you for the privilege to serve. entation signs. The hope is that reclamation of undesignated trails will provide great improvement to the ecological integrity of the park by decreasing vegetation losses, habitat fragmentation, and soil compaction. Nose Hill Park is a major regional park serving all Calgarians. It represents a significant part of our region’s history, plus Aboriginal heritage and use in the Calgary region. It will also benefit greatly from the preservation and trail management initiatives funded through Canada’s 150 Community Infrastructure Program. This involves construction and restoration of new and existing trails, installation of timber landscape stairs, and trail markers. As Nose Hill is one of the largest contiguous natural environment parks in a major city, this will create a lasting legacy as Canada prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. Our government recognizes that Alberta is facing a tough economic situation and that many families are directly affected. To resolve this, our Government is working in three key areas. Making a steadfast commitment to ensure the public services we all rely on are protected, working to diversify Alberta’s economy, and charting a course to bring the Provincial budget back into balance. Advent Lutheran Church 11 Scenic Acres Gate NW www.adventlutheran.ca Hope Lutheran Church 3527 Boulton Road NW www.hopelutheran.ca Albertans are people that care for each other, are dedicated to growth and carry a spirit of enterprise. That spirit was recently exemplified in the opening of the new West Dalhousie Elementary School playground. The neighbourhood playground was funded through the hard work and dedication of the parents and community members. On top of creating a modern and safe playground, this community ensured that all children, regardless of ability, have access to play. Playgrounds have historically created barriers to children who have differing physical abilities, and this new space is inclusive to all. We are fortunate to have the University of Calgary in our constituency. The U of C recently made an announcement that an additional 100 professors will be hired. This is a huge step to improving post-secondary education for Southern and Central Alberta students as well as for our community. Congratulations to the University of Calgary. I recently met with representatives from the Children’s Cottage Society, which provides emergency childcare and a safe space to stay during times of family crisis. Currently the Children’s Cottage Society has to turn away 1000-1500 children a year. To remedy this, a second Crisis Nursery and resource hub are being built in Montgomery. I am excited to work with this new addition to our community. I would like to invite everyone to our Holiday Open House on December 19, from 2pm to 5pm. Light refreshments will be served. Please come to our office, located at #101, 5403 Crowchild Trail, N.W. Hygge can help chase away the blues and make the season bright. What on earth is hygge, you say? It’s a Danish word, pronounced hYOOga, which translates roughly to ‘coziness’. It sounds similar to the word hug, and I like to think of it as a ‘hug to the soul’. Toast marshmallows around the fire-pit at the top of the St. Patrick’s Island toboggan hill, and stay for the outdoor holiday movie: evexperience.com Fill a thermos of tea, grab a neighbour, and walk through your neighbourhood. Make a snow angel or two. Celebrate the outdoors. It can help you discover your own sense of hygge. Life in Calgary offers many outdoor activities throughout the colder months. And since winter is too often a dreaded word in our English vocabulary, let’s embrace hygge as a way to live happier lives all year long. Danes fight the darkness of winter with hygge as their finest weapon, and the candlelight that goes along with it. It describes an attitude to life that explains why the Danes are the happiest people on earth. Hygge isn’t meant to be translated; it’s meant to be felt. When I picture hygge, I think of candlelight and firelight, friends and family and potlucks, snuggling under a blanket on a snowy day, a cat on my lap, a cup-of- hot chocolate and the smell of cinnamon and allspice. It means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the simple things in life with good people. There’s nothing more hygge than sitting round a candlelit table discussing the big and small things in life. Laws forbidding the sale of sodas on Sunday prompted William Garwood to invent the ice cream sundae in Evanston, IL, in 1875. In Denmark, the high-season for hygge is Christmas, when Danes pull out all the stops. If you’ve strolled the streets of Copenhagen during the festive season, you know the magic they can do with lighting and mulled wine. How can we bring this cozy feeling to each day? Bundle up for some Calgary hygge: Stroll along the Calgary Zoo’s snow-lined pathways with family and friends. Enjoy over 1.5 million lights and warm up at one of the roaring fire pits for a hot chocolate and conversation. Visit Calgary ZOOLIGHTS November 27 through to January 2: calgaryzoo.com Lace up your skates and head down to your community skating rink, maintained by our beloved rink volunteers. Or visit one of the many skating spots throughout Calgary such as Bowness Park or the Prince’s Island lagoon. There’s hygge to be found while wearing skates! Join Calgary’s largest snowball fight! You can sign up at snowfight.wix.com/signup to participate in our second annual snowball hygge. 18 DECEMBER 2015 I Great News Publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities Christmas Food Drive Sponsor Northland Volkswagen is a sponsor of the annual Mayor’s Food Drive for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank.
