the Eagle Gleneagles Country Club MARCH 2016 CLUB NEWS Dear Members, As we round the corner on yet another wonderful season, it is very exciting to be part of an active and successful year on all fronts. The club is performing well financially, dining and social events are experiencing record participation and the golf, tennis and fitness activities continue to be well utilized by members, family and guests. Our Healthy Lifestyle Initiative is off to a strong start with many members appreciating and Ralph Winer enjoying the new healthy lifestyle additions to our programming bog president and calendar. The proposed Phase II Healthy Lifestyle renovation continues to proceed with a great deal of due diligence, conceptual drawings, and round table meetings. Numerous discussions with the Board of Governors, Fitness Committee, House Committee, and Budget and Finance Committee are instrumental in shaping the program needs. In the very near future we will begin general informational meetings and discussions which will include architectural renderings, opportunities for questions Kraig Spina and answers and general communication. general Thank you to all the members that attended the Meet the manager Candidates Night as well as those that returned their Board of Governors Election Ballots. The Annual Membership Meeting will take place on February 23 at 8:00 pm. The new board will be introduced and immediately following the meeting, the Board will elect officers for the next year. The committees are a valuable resource to the Board of Governors, Leadership Staff and as Member Representatives. We strongly encourage you to consider submitting an application to serve on one of the Committees this year. We can’t think of a better way to portray the emotion, fun, participation, and enjoyment our members are experiencing at club events than to capture it on video for all to see. We recently produced a highlight video for the Art Show, Family Dinner Dance, and Secret Garden. In addition to producing specific event highlights videos throughout the year, the club produced a Lifestyle Marketing video that is a great piece for prospective members to get a glance into our Lifestyle. Videos can be found on our YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/GleneaglesFLA subscribe to our channel to be notified of the latest videos! Also, the club has started uploading photos from recent club events to SmugMug, a leading photo sharing website that gives our members the opportunity to view, download, share to social media, and even purchase prints, cards, and photo gifts online. Go to www.gleneagles.smugmug.com to view our latest albums! March 2016 5 ON OUR GREENS PRO GOLF TIP JOE DeMINO, pga director of golf This season is moving fast and we have had our share of sunshine! The events here at Gleneagles are fun, exciting, and tight matches. One of the elements that makes our golf exciting is that each event has its own flavor of excitement. We have had many of our new members enjoying these events and making new friends. Our Golf Demo days have been very successful and we want to thank you for your support. The sales reps really enjoy coming to Gleneagles and having our members test their new product. We want to thank our Director of Golf Course Maintenance, Jason Bagwell, and his team for their efforts in keeping the courses in great shape. This is an El Niño year, which creates more challenging weather conditions, yet our courses are remaining beautiful. As we move into the month of March, we hope that you will get ready for a great month of events such as our Member Guest tournaments, Club Championships, Couples and Nine & Dine events. We are going to keep you busy! As always, if there is anything you need, stop by the golf department and we are here for you. PAUL CRESPO, pga head golf professional We will be hosting our second Golf & Fitness Clinic on Friday, March 11 at 4:00 pm on the Driving Range. During this Clinic, our fitness team will be demonstrating and assisting members with how to stretch/train properly. Our golf staff will also provide some limited screening procedures to help show you how your body influences your golf swing. We look forward to seeing you there! If you have any questions please contact your Golf Professional Staff. 6 March 2016 COURSE CONDITIONS Due to the weather conditions throughout the season, you might notice the ball marks are a little deeper and maybe a few more scuff marks from golf shoes on the greens. If the pin is in the back of the green and your ball hit the front and rolled back. You probably have a tendency to park towards the back of the green where the pin is located, but it is important to remember to make that little extra effort to go the front of the green and fix the ball mark. We all take so much pride in our beautiful courses and as a whole we have the ability to keep them pristine. As always, remember to rake the bunkers and fill a divot and one extra in the fairway. Please obey the handicap flags and our cart traffic signs. All of these things make the conditions so much better for everyone. With the golf course pristine, you can focus on your swing, and here is this month’s tip: When you swing, keep your balance throughout the swing. Make sure when you finish your swing that you can stay balanced. – Joe the Eagle MARCH GOLF EVENTS COUPLES GOLF Sunday, March 6 18 Holers at 8:30 am 9 Holers at 1:00 pm LADIES 18 MEMBER-GUEST Monday, March 7 at 9:30 am MEN'S 18 MEMBER-GUEST Monday, March 14 at 9:30 am MEN'S 9 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP GOLFWEEK'S BEST! Bolle offers the “Melange” group, yellow and space-dyed slate, with a mixture of the very latest tanks, cap sleeves, ruched fronts, and slate skirts with a slit showing yellow shorts underneath. Tail calls the March collection “Navy Regatta,” with bright yellow tops and skirts with navy and white contrasting stripes. Your fellow players and opponents will call you “hot yellow” wearing these scene-stealing spring fashions! 8 March 2016 PRO TENNIS TIP RETRIEVING THE LOB Retrieving a lob can tangle players in a knot and result in a fumbled return, collision with a partner, or flat out not running for the ball at all. If the lob is short and would bounce inside the service line, turn sideways, prepare your racket and hit an overhead. If the ball is going to land beyond your service line, do not hesitate. Turn your knees back to the fence, watch the ball and run in a “J” path to where the ball will be struck. You should be behind the ball at this point. Let the ball drop to your ideal contact point around your knees and hit a cross court lob to the fat part of the court. Quick decision making and a confident path will result in a quality shot to continue the rally. – Mike the Eagle HEALTH & FITNESS CLASS SCHEDULE FITNESS AQUACISE Monday9:30 am - 10:30 am Tuesday9:30 am - 10:30 am Wednesday9:30 am - 10:30 am Thursday9:30 am - 10:30 am Friday9:30 am - 10:30 am Saturday9:30 am - 10:30 am BARRE/PILATES MAT Saturday11:00 am - 12:00 pm CARDIO SCULPT* Monday7:30 am - 8:15 am Monday8:15 am - 9:00 am Wednesday7:30 am - 8:15 am Wednesday8:15 am - 9:00 am KAREN MIKUS fitness supervisor Moving into March! Yes, and on March 21 at our meeting we will elect a new Board of Directors for next year. We just finished the 2016 Lifestyle Expo, enjoyed by all who attended. We raffled four Selfie Sticks for taking your own photo with your cell phone and showed the results on a computer while it happened. That was fun and a great demo of “mobility” or wireless connectivity. If you missed it … try one of our workshops, schedule always at http://gleneaglescomputer.org. Keeping your phone or device up to the latest version without spending tons of money is the subject Debbie Benson will enlighten us on at the March 21 Open Meeting at 3:00 pm in Strathearn. Maybe she’ll demo a Selfie Stick as well? One way to have the cash to buy the latest phone was demo’d by Rich North at our Feb. 15 meeting on eBay. Rich sold the entire Computer Cub, using eBay, to Gleneagles Condo V for $14.96, and they paid all cash. Good sale, Rich! Workshops continue to be more popular than ever, so be sure to review the March schedule on our website. Every month, new devices or Operating Systems are being introduced in the digital world. Keeping up with the times, the Computer Club has purchased a few of the newest systems, such as WIN 10 and an iPad Air2 and have prepared new workshops on these systems. One of the fun ones is the Chromebook, which operates in the Cloud allowing for complete sharing of your data, compliments of Google Drive. All members are encouraged to ask for a 30 minute demo of any of these systems before they buy (or afterwards). It’s easy, just send a request to help@ gleneaglescomputer.org. Have expertise in a particular program or device? How about becoming a volunteer instructor and sharing your knowledge. The greatest satisfaction in life is to assist others. GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB Casino Night! Tips for Driving in Foggy Conditions by ralph perfetto, director of security 1. Slow down. 2. Turn on your headlights, not your hazard lights, and stay focused on your driving 3. Increase your following distance. Safe following distance is crucial, you may need to brake suddenly and you need enough space to do so. 4. Do not drive and use a mobile device. This is on a ‘what not to do at any time list’ but especially during unsafe conditions such as fog! 5. Complete a safety check of your vehicle. Make sure your wipers are working properly.
