Panda Press École Lacombe Upper Elementary (http://www.elue.wolfcreek.ab.ca) APRIL 2014 (403)782-7410 MOCK ROCK 2014 On Thursday, March 13 the ÉLUE gym was packed with over 500 people eager to see the eighth annual Mock Rock. The fourteen grade 6 performances did not disappoint. Each act was unique, full of energy, had great lip-syncing, super props, excellent costumes and polished choreography. Those who took to the stage truly gave it their all! Because of the on-stage talent, the four judges had a very tough job. Selecting the top five performances was quite difficult for DARE Officer Glenn Ford, Jayson Lovell (WCPS Asst. Superintendent), Sunny 94’s Darcy Stingel and Sunny 94’s Suzy Burge (our 4 judges). However, they did a great job! To cap off the evening the staff at ÉLUE performed a medley of songs. It was a dazzling, show stopper of a performance. Special thanks to them for the time spent rehearsing, getting costumes, acquiring props and performing. Rankin’s RockBand wish to thank everyone who helped make Mock Rock 2014 a huge success! We thoroughly enjoyed putting together the project, performing on stage and most importantly collecting food bank donations for The Lacombe and District Food Bank. This year over 800 pounds of food and $180 cash was collected! Also, we wish to recognize our sponsors for making the Mock Rock evening possible. École Lacombe Upper Elementary School Page 3 Counsellors Corner Project Hope-Kenya Eighteen years ago ÉLUE established a Project Hope Campaign. The primary goal was to establish an internationally focused service learning project for our students. At ÉLUES we are committed to developing in our students strong citizenship skills at the local, provincial, national and international levels. We believe that taking care of others, especially those less fortunate than ourselves, is an attribute of a quality citizen. In the past, Project Hope has brought hope, empathy and kindness to Swaziland, South Africa, Sri Lanka and St. Vincent in the Caribbean. In 2008 we started working with A Better World Organization and Youth Unlimited to support the building of a school in Kenya. In 2012, we focused on Education and provided much needed textbooks to Kenyan classrooms. In 2013, our school focus was to provide funds so gardens at the school in Kenya could be watered. We purchased water lines to connect to large holding tanks. This year, our focus will be on the topic of Poverty, not only in Kenya but worldwide. To support the project, a few activities will take place: 1. In 2014, Mr. Wilson and Jake Schellenberg, coordinator of Youth Unlimited, will speak to all grade four classes about Project Hope and about the daily challenges people in Kenya face. 2. Daily announcements are highlighting the state of poverty around the world. 3. The Peer Support Team will sell raffle tickets on willow furniture donated by Wooden' It Country Styles, all proceeds will support Kenya. 4. Students will take part in rice day challenge. 5. All proceeds go directly to the project. Raffle tickets will go on sale Tuesday, April 8, 2014. You may purchase them at the office too! Our goal is to raise $2000 for Project Hope 2014! École Lacombe Upper Elementary School Mrs. S. Dykslag & Mr. I. Wilson Wonderful Wednesday! As we head into spring, we are looking ahead to our 27th annual Wonderful Wednesday activity day. For the past 26 years, our students have had the opportunity to take part in a fun-filled day of crafting, sports, touring local businesses and many other activities. This year this event will be held on Wednesday, June 4. This is the cross-over day for our Grade 6 Outdoor School; the day the first group comes back and the second heads out. Because of this, Wonderful Wednesday is set up for our Grade 4 and 5 students. Several of the activities do require student transportation and if you have at least $2 000 000 liability insurance and are available to assist, please let the office know. Driving will involve shuttle service to and from activities in the Lacombe area. Also, if you have a particular skill or talent that you would be willing to share with the students, please let us know as we are always looking for new activities to offer our students. Page 4 Project Hope Willow Sample Raffle Items Bird Bath Free Standing Lamp Post Welcome Tri Post These 3 beautiful willow items donated last year by Wooden' It Country Styles are a sample of the items we will be raffling to help raise money for Project Hope. A huge thank you goes out to Rod and Audrey Krenzler for this amazing donation. If you are interested in seeing more of Audrey Krenzler’s work, she has a store West of Lacombe on Highway 12. Please feel free to contact her for further information! École Lacombe Upper Elementary School Page 5 Program Highlights Cribbage Club Crib Club started in January and has now come to an end. Each Tuesday during the lunch recess, students learned how to play this wonderful game. It's a great game that encourages mathematical thinking. Thank you to our cribbage coaches this year, Mme Misutka and Mrs. Booth. Arts and Crafts Club During the month of April, students in Arts and Crafts club are going to learn to use "Duck Tape", a colorful form of duct tape, to create a craft. We will be using cardboard and Duck tape to make a pair of flip-flops that students will be able to wear. The dates for Arts and Crafts club in April will be: Thursday April 3, Monday April 7, Tuesday April 15 and Thursday April 24. Students can sign up for one week of this craft in order to give as many students as possible a chance to complete it. The Duck Tape craft will be the final Craft Club project of the year. GRADE SIX CONCERT -Mr. Epp On Thursday May 8th at 2:00 p.m. (open dress rehearsal) and 7:00 p.m. (main show) the gym at our school is going to rock with the sounds of about 115 Grade six students drumming and singing their hearts out. Part of the performance will be a STOMP style percussion show highlighting the musical sounds of the... pail!!! So please take a bit of time out of your busy schedules and come out and support our students as they give their best on the stage. We'd love to see you there! PAILS Mr. Epp and the Grade 6’s are in need of some more good clean 5 gallon and 3 gallon pails to drum on for the Grade Six concert. We could also use a few more big plastic barrels. Got any kicking around, please drop them off at the school. Thanks! ÉLUES Spring Concerts The grade 4 concerts will be individual class presentations of the musical revue called "Lovin’ Kindness" towards the end of May. More information will be forthcoming.
