OCCMHA had to reduce its budget by $14 million dollars during FY14; about $9.2 million represents funding for children and adults with developmental disabilities. OCCMHA used its reserve funds to cover most of these reductions during FY14. Core provider agencies had to also implement reductions in expenditures. Beginning on October 1, 2014, the OCCMHA may have to cope with yet another round of budgetary shortfalls. Depending upon the Medicaid rate-setting decisions for FY15, the current projections for such decreases might be an additional $8 - $10 million for services on behalf of children and adults with developmental disabilities. Town Hall Forum on Medicaid Rate-Setting and the Future Funding of the Mental Health System Wednesday, July 30, 2014, 7 - 9 pm Troy Community Center 3179 Livernois, Troy, MI 48084 (on the west side of Livernois, just north of Big Beaver Road [16 Mile Road]) Speakers Willie Brooks, Executive Director, Oakland County CMH Authority (Invited) Liz Knisely, DCH, Director of CMH Services Jerry Provencal, Executive Director, MORC, Inc. Moderator: Tom Kendziorski, Executive Director, The Arc of Oakland County, Inc. Sponsored by The Arc of Oakland County, Inc. and The Oakland County Regional Inclusive Community Coalition www.shrinechurch.com July 27, 2014 D.T.P.S. In the long version of the Gospel today we read about three more parables. At the end Jesus asks his disciples “Do you understand all these things?” Their response is just as important as the question since Jesus has been working hard to explain the parables to them more clearly. Their “Yes” response indicates something deeper since Jesus said the crowds would LACK understanding. This meant the disciples were like the seed that fell on good soil and bears fruit. He is telling us that we need to have an understanding of the parables in order to set us apart from the crowds. Jesus also refers to his disciples as scribes. True scribes were, according to the book of Sirach, able to “penetrate the subtleties of parables” unlike the scribes and Pharisees who opposed Jesus and did not understand even the simple parables. The really important lesson Matthew wants us to learn from Jesus is that to be a true disciple of Him, we MUST understand the parables and we MUST put them into practice or action daily. This week I challenge us to re-read chapter 13 from the Gospel of Matthew and look at each parable and how we are personally called to know the full value of God’s kingdom. In Christ, Deacon Tom Page 3 Divine Life Baptized in Christ Kirsteen Bella Marie daughter of Kirk Duncan and Tracey Jolley Serafina Grace daughter of Daniel and Gina (Giattino) Rozak Bruno Carlo son of Carlos and Luz (Rojas Salas) Sandoval Life Matters Margaret Sanger, founder of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, was a proponent of forced eugenics, segregation, abortion, birth control and sexual immorality. Her justification for many of her positions was that women were enslaved and must be free… Woman must have her freedom - the fundamental freedom of choosing whether or not she shall be a mother and how many children she will have.” After the decision of the Supreme Court in favor of Hobby Lobby against the HHS mandate, many pro-abortion advocates spoke out against the decision because it limits women’s freedoms. But what exactly is freedom… Defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1731 Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one's own responsibility. By free will one shapes one's own life. Human freedom is a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed toward God, our beatitude. 1732 As long as freedom has not bound itself definitively to its ultimate good which is God, there is the possibility of choosing between good and evil, and thus of growing in perfection or of failing and sinning. This freedom characterizes properly human acts. It is the basis of praise or blame, merit or reproach. 1733 The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to "the slavery of sin. St. Paul also tells us: For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Galations 5:13-14) Freedom for the Christian is to choose Jesus Christ. It is freedom for, it is not freedom from. It is freedom for God, freedom for good, freedom for choosing the right. While our society may consider abortion and euthanasia a “freedom of choice”, these are only choices that are against God and will never make someone free. God is the giver of all life and the giver of freedom. Making choices that follow the ways of God is the only path to true freedom. But such a treasure cannot be purchased at too great a cost, for once obtained it makes of this life as near an approach to heaven as we can hope for." --Fr. William Doyle "In his new awareness of the presence of a Divine Power, the individual turns over his whole personality, not to 'his higher self', but to the higher new self, which is God. Those who have responded to that gift of grace begin to feel the presence of God in a new way. Their religion ceases to be 'moralistic' in the sense which means that a man merely submits himself to a code, a law, and feels the necessity of obeying them as a duty. Religion also rises above the pietistic level...It is not Christianity and does not become so until one enters the third stage, the Mystical. Here at last-where Christ actually dwells in our hearts, where there is an awareness rooted in love, and where the soul feels the tremendous impact of God working on itself-here is found the joy that surpasses all understanding." --Archbishop Fulton Sheen Please call Marie Lama at 248.655.0309 if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. National Shrine of the Little Flower more attention and individualized lessons. We have worked with children having ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, and Cognitive impairment with great success. Our class has become a family and the children look forward to seeing each other each week! Read some of the testimonies of parents whose children attend our class. “Our Son has been able to learn the faith in a deeper way in a loving nurturing environment. He has been able to learn more about his faith with individualized attention, where he would not have gotten that in a typical Religion classroom. He would not have been allowed the personal care and redirection he needed.” “The special needs class has been invaluable for our son. He appreciates the class and values our faith as a result of what he learns. It provides reinforcement of the Catholic teachings and the Gospels. This class structure works well for our son because Deacon Tom and Barb create an environment of acceptance. Classes are hands on which is so important for children with ADHD. This class helps him feel a part of the whole church community. He has made good friends with the other children and sees them at Mass. The parents we have met have enriched my life and encourage us to never miss class.” “My son has attended the special needs class for 3 years and it has helped him so much with coming closer to God. We know he would never been able to function in a regular classroom with Autism. He now loves going to Church and class. He has made special friends there. All the kids love being together and work well with one another. Deacon Tom and Barb do a super job helping the kids to see the world through the eyes of God.” “A very special religious formation class takes place on Wednesdays. My daughter 10 yrs. old is diagnosed with Autism and has been a part of the class for 3 years. Deacon Tom and Barb have exceeded the expectations that I had as a parent. Our class has become a family. Our children are all on track and receiving the Sacraments! I don’t believe my daughter would have fared well in the regular Religion class. She has received a more individualized focused approach. Without the constant continual re-presenting of information in different ways our children would be lost. Shrine should be commended for offering such an opportunity, and Deacon Tom and Barb for their patience, their dedication, and love for this very special gift they have given to our children.” Please join our family if this sound likes a class that could bring your child closer to Christ! Elementary Religious Formation and Sacramental Preparation God Bless, Deacon Tom and Barb Avery Special Needs Class Did you know that two years of preparation is required before receiving First Holy Communion? The event is a day to enjoy with their family and friends, learn more about Angels’ Place, meet our residents and, most of all, have fun! Since 1992, Angels’ Place, a nonprofit organization, has provided homes and services for people with developmental disabilities. What started as a vision of five moms concerned about the well-being of people with developmental disabilities in their community has turned into the reality of Angels’ Place, a non-profit, faithbased organization which has opened twenty homes in twenty years. It depicts several of the Shrine’s Tower features, such as the front and back of the tower and St. Therese holding roses. It was designed especially for our church by the Ghirelli Company and now comes in styles for both men and women. The women’s rosary beads are fire-polished Bohemian beads made of glass, with a Crystal Aurora Borealis effect. The men’s rosaries have a 6mm hematite (dark gray) bead. The Crucifix and Centerpiece are in a silver-plated finish. The Ghirelli brand plate authenticates the original custom design and ensures that the rosary is made in Italy.
