Create a little old-school Hollywood
drama with rouge lips. “It’s a bold look,
so pare down the rest of your makeup to
keep the attention on your mouth,” says
Sheri Stroh, a Toronto-based makeup
and hair artist. Use foundation to even
out your skin tone and dust your T-zone
with translucent mineral powder to
absorb excess oil. Brighten cheeks with
just a sweep of peach blush, groom your
brows, and keep your eyes neutral with a
light application of a taupe shade.

and smooth on a waxy, moisturizing
balm. Then, colour in your lips. Try a
wine colour or the hottest new fuchsia
shades if you want to switch up your
basic red. Finally, purse your lips on a
tissue paper to set the pigment.
INSIDER SECRETS 1. For a softer, more
youthful look, forget the lip brush and
liner. Apply lipstick straight from the
tube, using small strokes, and spread the
colour with your fingertips to give the
effect of a lip stain. 2. Avoid applying
several heavy coats or the colour could
wind up on your teeth: not so pretty.

Start by applying a dark liner at the base of
the lashes on the top and bottom. “For a
change from basic black, try a purple,” says
Dan Nguyen, celebrity makeup artist and
owner of Lure salon in Vancouver. Smudge
on a dark shadow with a liner brush and
blend with a medium shadow applied to the
entire lid, so that they melt into each other.
Then, highlight the browbone and corners
of the eyes with a lighter, shimmery shade.
For a subtler eye, apply the colours with
your fingers instead of a brush. To brighten the whites of your eyes, use two mascaras: first black, then a coat of brown for

a richer shade. For a bolder look, wear a
colour mascara (blue, purple or green) on
the tips.To finish, clean up any eyeshadow
that has fallen underneath eyes and camouflage dark circles with concealer. Keep
lips and cheeks understated.
INSIDER SECRETS 1. If you’re blond,
try a navy or plum palette. Browns and
greens make redheads glow, and brunettes shine in bronzes and coppers. 2. If
you have deep-set eyes, put highlighter
in the middle of the eyelid and thinly
line eyes with a dark colour, then blend
with an iridescent eyeshadow.

focus on: GLOWING SKIN
Winter weather can wreak havoc on
your skin. A well-applied foundation
will help even out a sallow complexion
and hide imperfections and redness,
says Eddie Maleterre, official makeup
artist for L’Oréal Paris. “In cooler seasons, choose liquid bases over powdery
formulas,” he says. Using a flat brush,
sponge or fingers, apply product starting at the T-zone, moving outward
toward your cheeks. For more coverage,
apply concealer where necessary. Then,
dust on a highlighting powder — avoid
anything with a matte finish, which

can exacerbate the appearance of dry
skin — and sweep a pinkish blush over
cheeks. Complement the look with
eyeliner, mascara and a sheer berrytoned lipstick.
INSIDER SECRETS 1. To accentuate
your cheekbones, use a fan brush to
apply blush over the apples — a slight
smile makes them easy to find. 2. Not
sure where highlighter should go? Stand
under a lamp in front of a mirror to
locate spots that are naturally hit by light:
browbones, the inner corner of the eyes,
the chin and the bridge of the nose.

cuticles so as to not dry them out. To
avoid nicks and smudges, wait three to
five minutes between layers and speed
up the drying process by running icecold water over hands for 30 seconds.
Touch up your manicure every five days
or as needed.
INSIDER SECRETS 1. Dark polish
can make short fingers look smaller,
but instead of avoiding dark hues altogether, keep nails slightly longer and
rounded to lengthen fingers. 2. Give
your nails a trendy matte finish, by
swiping on a mattifying topcoat over
your favourite shades.

If your cold-weather wardrobe consists
of rich, dark colours, then your nailpolish palette should follow suit. And
you can always go for a little glitz with
gold, silver or bronze shades. “Metallic
or dark polish looks best on slightly
rounded, short nails,” says Gérald
Bélanger, national makeup artist for
Chanel. The ideal length is no longer
than your fingertips. Before painting,
file ridges, smooth rough edges and
nourish cuticles. Then, paint nails in
four steps: a smoothing base coat, two
coats of colour and a clear topcoat.
