Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle will continue to perform as Shaye. “It’s been an amazing five years, an incredible journey,” says Kim, “and I don’t think the journey is over yet. Dav and I are both excited about the future.” Tara is leaving due to family demands and will continue to pursue her solo career. This news comes on the heels of a very successful four part television documentary series entitled “Shaye,” which aired on E! Network. The series followed the group as they balanced their family/personal lives while promoting their CD Lake Of Fire. “Shaye” is also set to air soon on CMT Canada. Please visit www.shayemusic.com. When you’re onto something as magical and beautiful as Shaye, where true personalities and warmth intermix with an innate knack for entertaining and almost divine vocal connection, then you run with it. Their voices sound gorgeous together, whether harmonizing or taking the lead - Dav’s with its sexy rock quality and Kim’s with its raspy, country feel. But it’s how they perform that has enthralled audiences from coast-to-coast. They are a refreshing combination of old fashioned values and contemporary chutzpah. With their 2003 harmony-driven pop debut, “The Bridge”, close friends Kim Stockwood, Tara MacLean and Damhnait Doyle parlayed their gorgeous vocal blend and outgoing personalities into one of this country’s best stage shows. With the follow-up, “Lake of Fire”, the three blossomed even further, co-writing the majority of the songs and displaying stunning harmonies and leads. Headstrong, feisty and funny, all three proudly hail from the East Coast - Kim and Damhnait (aka Dav) from Newfoundland and Tara from PEI - but they chose Toronto as their home base long before Shaye, all pursuing solo careers. Leading up to the new album, Shaye wrote with a variety of people, including Ron Sexsmith (“the poor guy will never be the same,” quips Kim), and Gordie Sampson, who helped make “Star” the beautiful tribute that it is. The girls also decided to cover Sexsmith’s “Someway, Somehow,” instead of one of their co-writes. They also did a lot of writing with their producer Jay Joyce (Patty Griffin, Tim Finn, Chantal Kreviazuk), who had worked on “The Bridge” and collaborated with Shaye on “Happy Baby.” Shaye is thrilled that the packaging for “Lake of Fire” is made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper with guidance from the organization Zero Footprint, which they heard about at the premiere for An Inconvenient Truth. EMI enthusiastically partnered with the girls to ‘zero footprint’ the CD - paying to replace the resources used in production (energy, paper, water, etc) - the money will be used to plant trees in any community of Shaye’s choice that has an FSC-certified forest. After the release of “Lake of Fire,” Tara left Shaye to spend time with her family. Kim and Dav loved the sisterhood of working in partnership and wanted the spirit of the group to live on, so continue to perform together as Shaye. Still active as solo artists, Kim released her first Christmas album (I Love Santa) in ‘06, and Damhnait has been writing for other artists and for the TV show Instant Star, and will release her fourth solo record, “Lights Down Low,” in 2008. 7 Stephan Moccio & Denzal Sinclaire Tuesday March 4, 2008 There will be one 20 minute intermission Stephan Moccio For years, the music of Toronto’s Stephan Moccio (stehf ’-an mock’-key-oh) has been heard primarily through the voices of other artists. Having written songs for international superstars such as Céline Dion (“A New Day Has Come”), Sarah Brightman (“What You Never Know”) and Josh Groban (“My Heart Was Home Again”), he is now ready to make a name for himself as a talented performer in his own right, with the launch of his debut album of solo piano compositions, entitled “EXPOSURE”. “EXPOSURE” is a collection of 22 sophisticated and subtle piano compositions that endeavor to bring Stephan’s pop and classical backgrounds together in a manner that will appeal to a wide audience, from the seasoned aficionado to those discovering music for the very first time. According to NUVO Magazine, “EXPOSURE is a collection of wellcrafted, heart felt piano pop, destined to bring piano and pop lovers together at last.” (Autumn 2006) Recorded in Toronto Canada, “EXPOSURE” was mixed by Juno award winning engineer Vic Florencia, and mastered by Juno-nominated João Carvalho. Stephan’s musical life began with piano lessons at the age of 4. After an award-winning career through adolescence, he went on to complete an honours degree in composition and piano performance at the University of Western Ontario. He was offered a scholarship to the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston, but instead chose to focus on developing his professional career, signing a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing at the age of 22. Throughout his 8-year tenure at Sony/ATV, he matured as a songwriter, producer, arranger and performer, leaving in 2003 to form his own publishing company, Sing Little Penguin Inc. In addition to the aforementioned superstars, Stephan has also written songs for Olivia Newton-John and international chanteuse Hayley Westenra, as well as pop sensations JC Chasez (former *NSYNC) and Nick Lachey, and Canadian icons Randy Bachman, Murray McLauchlan, Marc Jordan, Edwin, Philosopher Kings and Prozzak. As an arranger, Stephan has worked with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and is regarded internationally as one of the world’s premier talents. 8 Stephan’s talent as both a performer and entertainer has taken him across Canada several times, touring with notable artists from the Sony Music roster. He has shared the stage with Randy Bachman, Sophie Milman, and was a featured artist at former US President Bill Clinton’s recent 60th birthday celebration in Toronto, alongside Josh Groban, Jon Bon Jovi, Sarah McLachlan and JamesTaylor. Stephan was invited to return for a second year as the featured performer at the prestigious Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Gala where he performed for a celebrated audience, including inductee Joni Mitchell. Stephan’s own solo performances in support of “EXPOSURE” are dynamic and engaging – he peppers his moving renditions of album tracks with stories which draw from the experiences of his relatively short but expansive career, shattering audience preconceptions about piano players to reveal a charming, accessible and grounded performer whose youthful exuberance captivates even the most fickle fan. www.stephanmoccio.com Denzal Sinclaire Toronto-born vocalist/pianist/composer, Denzal Sinclaire has earned his reputation as Canada’s most popular male jazz vocalist. Sinclaire is a graduate of Montreal’s McGill University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance. Denzal’s vocal timbre is similar to some of the great singers. Nat King Cole, Johnny Hartman and there are even glimpses of Johnny Mathis’ jazz days. However, Denzal does have what every artist strives for. After singing just a few notes you know it is him. His trademark is the joyfulness in his voice and a special approach to phrasing a lyric or pushing or laying back on a beat. He is blessed with exquisite delivery, sensitivity to melody and a lyrical imagination. For Denzal, singing is as natural as breathing. A multiple Juno Award nominee, and recipient of the 2004 National Jazz Award for “Best Album”, he has graced the stages of numerous high-profile jazz festivals , performed with symphony orchestras, and starred in his own one hour television special for BRAVO! In 2005, Denzal was inducted into the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame. Among Denzal’s admirers are Diana Krall, who was introduced to Denzal at the 1995 Jazz Winnipeg Festival and Diane Reeves, who became a fan after Denzal opened for her at the 2002 Vancouver International Jazz Festival. He has recorded three albums for Universal Music, “I Found Love” (EmArcy); the self- titled, “Denzal Sinclaire” (Verve); and “ My One and Only Love”(Verve). www.denzalsinclaire.com 9 Dufflebag Theatre presents Peter Pan Sunday March 9, 2008 • Showtimes: 11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m. Performance will be 60 minutes in length, with no intermission Media Partner 2:00 p.m. show: DuffleBag Theatre returns with for another fun filled and hilarious season of interactive storytelling theatre. The author of Canada’s all-time bestselling book, The Wealthy Barber, has returned to speaking after a five-year absence. For close to a decade Chilton was among the most sought-after speakers in North America. His unique combination of knowledge and humour helped to take the intimidation and dryness out of financial planning. Chilton’s new speeches aren’t about just money. They’re about believing in yourself, overcoming mistakes (many of his are truly hilarious) and, most importantly, they’re about perspective - the missing ingredient in many people’s lives. His recipe for success is hard work, a clear vision and some clever marketing. Whether it’s helping thousands of Canadians achieve personal financial success or investing in low-fat cookbooks, Chilton has always had a knack for recognizing great ventures from the get-go. 11 Chilton is an economics graduate and has won the prestigious H.L. Gassard Memorial Award for achieving the highest score in the country on the Canadian Securities Course. Despite that, he’s actually a fun guy. In fact, his forte is taking the intimidation out of financial planning by wrapping it in humour and accessible illustrations. The Wealthy Barber’s “novel” format has opened the personal-finance door to hundreds of thousands of Canadian households. Maclean’s magazine reports “...30 years from now Chilton could be best remembered not as a bestselling author, but as the man who inspired thousands to save their way to prosperity.” Chilton has also hosted two critically acclaimed specials on PBS where the Chicago Sun-Times describes his performance as “charming, unpretentious, and funny.” More recently Chilton donned a new hat and published the low-fat cookbooks, Looneyspoons and Crazy Plates. They, too, have gone on to top national bestseller lists. David Chilton is a man of mystery. As the author of The Wealthy Barber, Canada’s all-time bestselling book, he was at the pinnacle of success five years ago – and then he disappeared. For close to a decade Chilton was among the most sought-after speakers in North America. His unique combination of knowledge and humour helped to take the intimidation and dryness out of financial planning. Then out of the blue, he retired from speaking to home school his children. Now he’s back (his kids tired of him, he admits!) and we’re excited to be working with him. We’re also very pleasantly surprised. Chilton’s new speeches aren’t about just money. They’re about believing in yourself, overcoming mistakes (many of his are truly hilarious) and, most importantly, they’re about perspective – the missing ingredient in many people’s lives. We first heard he was back on the speaking circuit when the meeting planner for the United Way’s annual meeting told us, “Dave’s speech was the best I’ve ever heard – the audience reaction was nothing short of amazing.” Even though, at the time, we weren’t sure exactly what his new speech was about, we had him speak to 500 of our clients. The reaction? “Dave’s presentation taught me so much. I learned about taking risks, believing in myself, and knowing that success is possible…and all the while laughing hysterically! Thank you David Chilton and Speakers’ Spotlight!” - HOK Architecture “Very personable, funny, friendly, easy to relate to!” - Watson Wyatt Worldwide “Wonderful!! I had no idea he was this funny!” - Fire Engine Inc. 12 Theatre Staff ADMINISTRATION Phone: 905-415-7537 Acting Theatre Manager: Bonnie Armstrong Marketing & Development Coordinator: Wendy Woof-Severn Marketing Assistant Jason Chan Theatre Administration Clerk: Debbie Watson THEATRE BOARD Mario Miranda, Chair Brian Harvey, Vice Chair David T. But where did those incredible songs come from? What inspired one of history’s most prolific pop song-writing teams to come up with such timeless hits as “Yesterday”, “A Hard Day’s Night”, “Hey Jude”, “Let it Be”, and countless others? Get ready to take a trip down “The Long and Winding Road” and explore the sometimes tumultuous relationship of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and some of the stories behind the songs that have become a part of our lives. Jim Witter and his incredible band are your tour guides on this “Magical Mystery Tour” into the minds of the legendary creators behind the Beatles biggest hits. Enjoy the ride! 14 Jim Witter has been entertaining for over 20 years… Whether it be his country music, contemporary Christian, or the music of Billy Joel and Elton John or The Beatles, Jim’s versatility as an artist has allowed him the opportunity to reach out and share his music and his infectious personality with audiences of all ages across Canada and the United States. His unique approach and comfortable rapport makes each member of his audience feel as though they are a part of a private concert in the comfort of their own living room. This, along with his rich, powerful voice and ease of manner at the piano, make him a favourite with theatre-goers everywhere. It all started at a very early age, as Jim began performing in the comfort of his own living room. His Mother would play piano, and Jim would belt out the hits, everything from the Beatle’s to Broadway musicals. Not bad for a four year old! All through his school years, Jim knew that he was destined to have a career in the music business. “I never really thought of doing anything else”, he says, “and neither did my parents because they always encouraged me to follow my dream”. And follow it he did. Jim paid his dues, playing in the clubs and bars around Southern Ontario for years. He would write songs and record demos during the day, and play in the clubs at night to pay the bills. Jim met his wife Rebecca in 1985. Together, they worked tirelessly to promote Jim’s talent and music in hopes that one day their efforts would be recognized. Finally in 1990, one of Jim’s demos came to the attention of a Sony Music Canada executive, which really got Jim’s recording career rolling. A record deal with a smaller independent label in Canada, soon gave way to a multi-record deal with Curb Records of Nashville, home of Tim McGraw, Leanne Rimes and Wynonna Judd. From his first self titled record, to “All My Life” and “Forgiveness”, Jim has had 10 top ten radio hits in Canada, 7 hit videos on CMT, and impressive chart action in the U.S. on Billboard and R&R. Jim’s music and songwriting have been recognized on both sides of the border, earning him multiple awards and nominations from the Canadian Country Music Association, the Juno Awards, and most recently the Dove Awards in Nashville, where Jim’s album “Forgiveness” was nominated for Inspirational Album of the year. “Songwriting has always been a real love of mine”, says Jim. “I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with so many incredible song-writers over the past years, like Steve Wariner for instance. Not only have the collaborations produced songs that I am very proud of, but I have gained an invaluable education and created lifelong friendships along the way.” A few years ago, Jim came up with the concept for the show “The Piano Men”; a musical journey through the 70’s featuring the songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. “I was always a big fan of acoustic music-especially the folk of the ‘70s: James Taylor, Harry Chapin,” he reveals, “but my real mentors were Billy Joel and Elton John.” This multi-media rock musical has turned out to be a hit, receiving rave reviews from music critics all across North America. He recently returned from a tour overseas, which included Dubai and stops all over the United Kingdom where the show received standing ovations night after night. “I usually go out to the lobby after the show to greet people as they leave the theatre, and one consistent comment I was hearing was that we ought to do a Beatles show. Since the Beatles are my favourite band of all-time, the decision to put together a show focusing on John and Paul’s writing was a no-brainer for me!”. Soon afterward, “The Long and Winding Road” premiered, and has quickly become a favourite of folks familiar to Jim’s live shows. Jim still lives in Southern Ontario with his wife, Rebecca, and their four children, James, Roslyn, Ryan and Luke. A devoted family man, Jim is also very active in his community, supporting numerous charities and organizations, especially those which benefit children and their families. “All I’ve ever wanted from this business is to be able to support my family and to make people feel a little better when they hear my music. To help them forget about their troubles for a while and enjoy the moment”, he concludes. “If I can continue doing this 5, 10, 15 years down the road, I’ll be perfectly happy.” 15 Presents Wednesday April 2, 2008 There will be one 20 minute intermission Jasper Station is an enlightening peek into the lives of six people at a crossroads.
