CARING
Newsletter of Mount Olivet Home, Mount Olivet Careview Home, and Mount Olivet Day Services
To do that, the Careview board has determined that a renovated facility with
more single rooms, integrated state-of-the-art therapy facilities, an expanded
Transitional Care Unit, and an enhanced ambiance is crucial. “The assisted living
industry has raised the bar for what people are
expecting for any health care provider,” Tom
Litecky, director of community relations, says.
“The expectation of the general public is not
just good care, but also a good environment.”
The Minnesota Department of Health has
approved the building plan. Partial funding is
being received from the Department of Human
Services. Immediate funding for the construction will be financed by bonds issued by
Northland Securities. Fundraising efforts will
provide furnishings for the entire building.
And finally, it is the care of residents that is of first importance. Tim clarifies,
“We are consistently hearing from families that they are coming here because
of our reputation for good care. And, after all is said and done, that’s most important.” Tom adds, “This renovation merely continues our mission of caring for
seniors who need nursing care. That was our mission in 1965, and keeping that
as our focus has helped us stay successful.”

With groundbreaking set for June 1, staff is
carefully planning next steps with residents in
mind. “The nice part,” Tim points out, “is that
for the initial year of new construction, residents’ rooms will not be affected.” Although
behind-the-scenes facilities, like the kitchen
and loading dock, will be displaced, staff will

the year-long construction, before existing facilities are renovated, when some of them will be moved into the new building.
“We know that families and friends will understand that these inconveniences
will result in a wonderful new facility with enhanced care for residents,” Tim says.
The Greatest Gift You Can
Give Your Loved Ones!
Offering a continuum of high-quality care for seniors and children in an intergenerational setting
Administrator Tim Hokanson makes clear that, having just celebrated 50 years
of service, Mount Olivet Careview Home is beginning a major renovation to prepare for the next 50 years: “It is our mission to be both the provider of choice and
the employer of choice in the southwest Minneapolis area.”

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR
TIM HOKANSON
It was with a great deal of admiration that I listened to the personal stories of
our employee scholarship winners at our annual Scholarship Awards Dinner last
January. I am grateful that we have such dedicated employees working for us,
and that we have families who have stepped up to establish scholarships for deserving employees who are furthering their education. It is evident that a strong
bond has been established between our families and the caregivers of their loved
ones. I thank our generous donors for making scholarships possible, and I thank
our employees for their determination and hard work in furthering their skills
through advanced learning.
Our super volunteers continue to provide loving service to our residents and to our
facilities. Thank you, thank you, for your willingness to make a difference. I always
say that when a volunteer walks through our doors we become a better place.
There is a great deal of excitement and anticipation about our new building
addition. We know that its completion will bring even greater comfort and dignity to our residents. We ask for the patience of our residents and their families
during these next 18 months of construction and remodeling. We are moving offices and the kitchen to a temporary location in preparation for the project. Let’s
keep in mind the renewal this effort will bring to our commitment of providing
high-quality care for our residents. The temporary
inconveniences will all be worth it. We will keep
you updated as we move forward.

CELEBRATING A
CENTENARIAN
Her sense of humor is immediately
evident. “Some people assume that
after 80 you lose your marbles,” Audrey
“Lorrie” Holt says with a laugh. “I haven’t
lost mine yet.” She sets aside the
StarTribune crossword puzzle, nearly
completed. Lorrie moved into Mount
Olivet Home earlier this year. April 1 is
her 101st birthday.
Ask Lorrie
about her life
and she can
recall so many
of the details.
She was born
in Minneapolis
to Huldah and
Arvid Johnson.
Lorrie’s mother

is the sole surviving member, losing her last friend
from that group just three
years ago. She came to

school years to set her
apart from another Audrey Johnson in her class.
She laughs as she recalls
some of their somewhat
mischievous behavior. “I

with a sly smile.

her husband, Warren Holt. He eventually became the captain of detectives
for the Minneapolis police department.
“He was just a nice guy,” Lorrie says.
They lived in southwest Minneapolis,
finally building a house there, with her
husband doing much of the work and
recruiting friends and neighbors to help.
She loved gardening. “Oh, we had some
beautiful roses,” she remembers.
Lorrie worked in accounting throughout her career. She was working for the
Minneapolis welfare department “when
my husband went into the service. I saw
a Cargill ad in the paper and thought,
maybe they’ll pay more than the city.
I was the first married woman Cargill
hired,” Lorrie recalls, referring to a time
when women’s options were more limited. “Do you believe that?”
Lorrie and Warren had two children,
Michelle and Greg, who both now are retired. Michelle lives nearby and Greg in
Michigan. She has four grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
“I’ve had a very happy life,” Lorrie
says. “Better than average.”

congratulates Lorrie on 101 years!

FACES AND PLACES
Thank You, Volunteers!
You are our Sunshine!
Every spring, organizations across the United States recognize the contributions of
time and talent made by volunteers. The annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon will be
held Thursday, April 14, at 12:30 p.m., in the Lund Chapel.
Mount Olivet Home and Mount Olivet Careview
Home celebrate George and JoAnn Swanson as their
2016 Volunteers of the Year. George and JoAnn serve
as escorts to Sunday and Wednesday worship services, and to in-house medical appointments. George
has been volunteering for over 20 years, and both he
and JoAnn say they are thankful to be able to help.
We thank the Swansons for their dedication and for
being such wonderful friends to our residents.
George & JoAnn Swanson
Mount Olivet Day Services will honor Mary Remakel as its 2016 Volunteer of the Year. As a retired kindergarten
teacher, Mary is a wonderful guest teacher each Wednesday. Her
visits and “Letter of the Week” presentations are a highlight for the
Rainbow Fish preschool class. We thank Mary for sharing her many
talents with our children.
Congratulations to these outstanding volunteers—and to all who
give so freely and generously of their time! Invitations to the luncheon have been mailed. Please call Heidi Opitz at 612.821.3490
with questions or to register.

Make a
Difference—
Volunteer!
Be a ray of sunshine for
our residents by joining our
dynamic family of volunteers who play a vital role
in our residents’ lives. Volunteers escort residents to
medical exams in the facility, to worship services, and
to special entertainment
presentations. But even
more, volunteers become
our residents’ friends and
part of an extended family.
Volunteers make our homes
truly “home” for our residents. If you are interested
in making a difference in
the lives of our residents,
please contact Heidi Opitz at
[email protected]
or 612.821.3490.
Friends Are Priceless
Friend volunteers provide one-to-one friendship and
offer a sacred and safe space for residents to share their
stories and life experiences. As a Friend, you bless the
life of a resident and are also blessed through this special
relationship. For more information, contact the spiritual
care office at 612.821.3260 or 612.821.3404.

Leona Peterson Warms Hearts
Leona Peterson, a Mount Olivet Home resident, has been crocheting colorful
blankets and donating them to charity for 23 years. She creates about 20 per year,
which means Leona has donated more than 460 blankets over
the years! They are given away
at Christmastime to people in
need. She creates the blankets
with leftover yarn she has been
given, in addition to gifts she
has received.
At Mount Olivet Day Services, Colin (l) works on
a Saint Patrick’s Day craft with Rose Amos (r).
Leona says that making these
blankets gives her a purposeful
activity, and she loves knowing
that “I am doing something
good for somebody.”
We thank Leona for her great
generosity as she warms the
hearts of those who need it most.
Resident Shirley Bakeberg and Chaplain Kari
Fedje Rasmus enjoy each other’s company.

Grace Hospice
Mary Lord, MT-BC (pictured below) is a music therapist with Grace Hospice, a
partnership created between Mount Olivet Careview Home and Augustana Care
that provides specialized comfort care for individuals at end of life. Its mission
is to serve “by recognizing that every person deserves to live out his or her life
with respect and dignity, free of pain, and in an environment that promotes
quality of life.”
Music therapy is integral to carrying out this mission by using music for pain
management, decreased anxiety, and increased communication. Mary says,
“Sometimes words just fail. Music creates a space to ‘be present’ with a loved
one, to express faith and feelings, without the need to talk.” Music therapy also
allows families opportunities to reminisce and share
feelings surrounding the
end-of-life journey.
Grace Hospice is Medicare and Medicaid certified,

Dear Friend and Supporter,
Mount Olivet Home, Mount Olivet Careview Home, and
Mount Olivet Day Services are grateful to have received
$250,000 from nearly 300 donors at the end of 2015. Special
thanks to the Mount Olivet Homes’ Auxiliary for their very
generous gifts of $20,000 to each of the organizations!
I hope you will join us for the estate planning seminar on Tuesday, April 19. See
the cover for full information. Having a well-thought-out estate plan is one of the
greatest gifts you can give your loved ones.
There are many ways to leave your legacy. I would like to share one example of
a generous donor who appreciated Mount Olivet’s services for seniors.
In 2011, Floyd Dygve established a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) that ultimately
would benefit Mount Olivet Careview Home along with some other charities. His
mother had been a Careview resident, and he appreciated the great care she received.
Floyd wanted to help ensure that same high-quality care for others. Using his U.S. savings bonds, Floyd set up his CGA. Because a CGA is based on the donor’s age and Floyd
was 89 years old at the time, he received an annual payment of 9.5% from his CGA.
Floyd also received a tax deduction. It was a win-win way to give.
Floyd passed away in February, and Mount Olivet Careview Home will receive its
share of the CGA residual. Floyd’s gifts will support programs and services that were
important to him in his lifetime. The Dygve legacy lives on through Floyd’s generosity.
Maybe you would like to create a CGA and receive an income stream while providing a future gift for programs close to your heart. Give me a call. I would be happy to
prepare a personalized illustration for you. Thanks for considering a CGA.
I hope to see you April 19.
Happy spring!
