Sacrament of Baptism
The Diocese requires that parents
seeking baptism for their child attend a
baptism preparation class. To schedule a
baptism class, parents must be registered
practicing members of St. John’s for a
minimum of two months. Classes are
offered once a month and baptisms are
celebrated on the first and third Sundays
of each month after the 1:00 p.m. Mass.
Please call the parish office to register for
a class. Upon completion of the class and
fulfillment of the godparent requirements,
parents may schedule a baptism date.
Sacrament of Matrimony
Those who wish to be married in our
parish must complete the Marriage
Preparation Program. The Diocese
requires a six month notice.

#ToKnow – Summer of Service Action
Did you get a chance to hear one of Fr. John’s homilies last weekend?
He described our trip to Immokalee in detail, including the horrific
living conditions that the men, women, and children undergo
every single day. You can find the pictures from this trip at: http://

Pope Francis has asked us all to shed the light of our love and joy on
these situations, and focus our church and our actions on them in his
“Mission Statement” for the church, the EVANGELII GAUDIUM,
Chapter 1, Section 48:
Let us go forth, then, let us go forth to offer everyone the life of
Jesus Christ. Here I repeat for the entire Church what I have often
said to the priests and laity of Buenos Aires: I prefer a Church
which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on
the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being
confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a
Church concerned with being at the centre and which then ends
by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures. If
something should rightly disturb
us and trouble our consciences,
it is the fact that so many of our
brothers and sisters are living
without the strength, light and
consolation born of friendship
with Jesus Christ, without a
community of faith to support
them, without meaning and a
goal in life. More than by fear
of going astray, my hope is that
we will be moved by the fear
of remaining shut up within
structures which give us a false
sense of security, within rules
which make us harsh judges,
within habits which make us feel
safe, while at our door people
are starving and Jesus does not
tire of saying to us: “Give them

St. John is blessed to have over 60 different Ministries, all focused
on the Mission, To Know, To Love, and To Serve God in His Church
and Our Community. This summer, we want to invigorate our service
commitment on several priorities: Immokalee and the Homeless in
Collier County and Lee County. These close-to-home issues require
immediate action, and Fr. John has authorized two “Tiger Teams”,
experts and dedicated individuals tasked to assess the situations and
begin programs to support the dignity and humanity of all those in
need. Together, in collaboration, we can make a significant impact.
#ToServe – Immokalee Mission Team
Fr. John’s homily focused on a specific issue of housing and living
conditions in Immokalee. There are many Ministries, like the

Ladies of Charity, and individual parishioners that already focus
their efforts on Immokalee, through Habitat for Humanity and the
Catholic Charities, especially from Our Lady of Guadalupe. We are
developing the St. John Immokalee Mission Team in order to provide
additional and complementary support to this area, in particular with
urgent needs like food and housing services. We will also collaborate
with these other Ministries to lend support to their current programs.

#ToServe – Serving the Homeless
There are also several organizations in the area that assist homeless
individuals and families, including St. Vincent DePaul and St.
Matthews House. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of people living
homeless who are not able to use
these programs, due to substance
abuse or other factors. “Amen,
I say to you, whatever you did
for one of these least brothers of
mine, you did for me.” (Matthew
25:40). What can we do? We can
feed them. We can show them
humanity and respect. We can
love them.

Homeless Services Team, where
we will be reaching out to these
individuals and providing them
direct support, please contact me.
#ToServe – Thanks to
All VBS Volunteers!
I cannot thank enough all the volunteers who have worked tirelessly
for weeks and months now on the 2014 Vacation Bible School for St.
John. We have over 200 pre-school and elementary school children
who will get to journey with Moses through our Wilderness Escape.
We have five jam-packed days of fun, games, prayer, and engagement
planned in a beautiful, desert-themed environment. There are over
100 volunteers (including our middle and high school students)
who will ensure these “Tribes” have a wonderful time, from parting
the Red Sea to building their own Ten Commandments. From the
décor to registration, from the crafts to the games, none of this week
would be possible without the time and talent
of volunteers. A special thanks to all of you
who provided sheets, carpets, baskets and
all the items that will make this theme
come alive. It is heartening to see so
many people dedicate themselves to our
parish and our children. We are looking
forward to an amazing week!
VBS Participants Will Escape into the Wilderness
Volunteers and helpers, both
adults and youth, are in the
final stages of preparation for
Vacation Bible School. These
past couple weekends were
filled with staging, preparing
and costuming the St. John
buildings to represent the
Hebrew camps as they leave
Egypt on the way to the
Promised Land. With the
theme, Wilderness Escape,
participants will take a fun
trek through the desert with
Moses and his friends.

I received the most beautiful note via
U.S. mail last week. The note was from
a parishioner who had recently returned
to her Northern residence in New York.
“Thank you for sharing the love of Jesus
in such a beautiful way. The liturgy
and messages are gifts to a faith filled
community. It is my blessing to be with
you.” It is notes such as this which make
all we do for Saint John the Evangelist very worthwhile.
I would like to personally apologize to our parish congregation
for all of the issues we have had recently with regards to the
sound system, lighting system and air conditioning in the
church. As you know, we have installed new lighting controls,
sound controls and AC controls and it seems that the learning
curve was much greater than anticipated. Ultimately, all of
these systems will be controlled by one operating system,
however, currently they are all being operated independently
which has been problematic at best. Once we are able to tie all
of the systems together, we will recognize a great cost savings
and have a very efficient operating system. Please understand
that we are working diligently to resolve these issues.
Vacation Bible School is now filled to capacity. If your child
is enrolled to participate, I ensure you that this year’s VBS will
be the best ever. If your
child was unable to attend,
I urge you to register early
next year as our program is
arguably the best locally.
We have broken the
$300,000.00 threshold
with regards to the 2014
Catholic Faith Appeal.
We still have a lot of work
to do but with nearly seven
full months remaining in
the appeal, I am confident
that our parishioners will
come through strong.

way to help us and help

appreciated stock to the
CFA. Considering that
the stock market (DJIA)
has been hovering near record highs for the past several weeks,
many of you are in receipt of appreciated stock. Remember
that by donating “appreciated stock,” you will be able to avoid
the capital gains tax and recognize the gift as a charitable
donation at fair market value. This is what I would call a true
win-win situation. You get to avoid a big tax hit, “write off”
the gift and help us reach our CFA goal. You may call the

After my recent comments regarding the Memorial Garden
at Saint John the Evangelist, I have had several questions arise
that I will do my best to address. First and foremost, The
Catholic Church states that cremation is perfectly appropriate
with the stipulation that the ashes or cremains are placed in
an urn and buried in consecrated ground, which is the case in
our Memorial Garden. The Catholic Church does not allow
ashes to be stored on a shelf or scattered in the ocean, etc. You
must be a parishioner of Saint John the Evangelist or a family
member of a parishioner in order to purchase space in our
garden. If you are Catholic and your spouse is not, you may
both be interred in our memorial garden. Finally, you must be
willing to be cremated as we may only bury cremated remains
in our Memorial Garden. Hopefully, this clears up some of the
questions those of you on the fence have been contemplating.

We will begin installation of six new air conditioning units
in the PLC the week of June 16. Believe it or not, the rooftop
units being replaced are the original units and have given us 17
solid years of service. Considering our proximity to the Gulf
of Mexico, that is a great life span. The new units will come
complete with “controls”
so that they may be
operated via our Metasys
system. There will be
a crane onsite and most
likely a bit of mess while
the installation takes place.

The Gift of the Holy Spirit
oday we focus on the Third Person of the Trinity
— the Holy Spirit. In the Book of Genesis, we
hear that the Spirit hovered over the waters of
the deep at the beginning of creation, ushering
in order and displacing chaos. This same Spirit
descended upon the disciples bringing courage
in the midst of fear. The chaos that surrounded
the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus was pushed
into the recesses of the Apostles’ memory as
they received new confidence and strength from
the Advocate. The Holy Spirit gives birth to the
Church and ignites the early Christians with an
energy that becomes explosive in giving witness
to Jesus’ message. The Spirit’s presence so
transformed the band of followers huddled in
fear in the upper room, that they were confident
enough to go out and boldly proclaim the risen
Christ!
As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday we affirm
our belief in the transforming power of the Holy

Life Matters
Did you know that our wonderful Liturgist, Tom Oram, has
been a part of developing a pro-life music CD? Even better,
that CD is available at a very reasonable price right here in our
own Divine Boutique! The CD includes 5
tracks that celebrate life, including tracks
from Gabriela Frei, Jennine Fuentes as
well as Tom’s own beautiful “Hail Mary”.
The CD was produced by R. Raymond
and Mary Elizabeth Rich in memory of
their granddaughter, Mallory. All proceeds
from the sale of this CD go to Community
Pregnancy Center.
Back in March, the Respect Life Committee
launched our first ever prayer vigil for a
death row inmate about to be executed. We joined our prayers
with those throughout the state for the man who was killed and
for his victims. Is the man on death row any less one of God’s
children than you or I? Is his life worth any less because of his
sins?

ensure every moment of life is cherished and valued, even if
that is difficult due to how that life is being led. St. John Paul
II, in his encyclical, The Gospel of Life,
stated that in the modern world, where
dangerous felons can be safely imprisoned,

reminds us that all life is sanctified, even
the life of a grave sinner. Responding to
violence with violence only promotes more
violence.

Life Committee for the next execution
prayer vigil on June 18. Don’t forget to
notify Deacon Rob, Rosemary Erickson, or me if you want to
be included in specific communications for these vigils. We
will not always have this much lead-time to get the word out
and we want to ensure any participation we can have.

Ladies of Charity Inducts Eight New Members
It is wonderful to be able to introduce our newly inducted
members into Ladies of Charity of Naples Ministry. We are
now totaling over 83 members and still growing. We celebrated
our new members with a brunch following the 9:00 Friday
morning Mass on March 15. A few weeks later our ladies
toured St. Matthews House, Providence House and immediately
volunteered filling Easter Food Baskets for Casa Maria families
in Immokalee.
Ladies of Charity meet the second Friday of every month
from September through May each year. They volunteer at
Immokalee schools and Naples Park Elementary. The Ladies
assist at the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen as well as St. Matthew
House Soup kitchen and visit those folks in need of some errands
to run or simply a home visit.

8. The Holy Father will be holding
a prayer meeting for peace with the
presidents of Israel, Shimon Peres,
and Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, at
the Vatican. The meeting is a follow
up to Pope Francis’ recent pilgrimage
to the Holy Land. The faithful are
encouraged to pray for peace.
