I would like to “Thank” Rosemary Lloyd; Barbara Moore; who did a great job in preparing the materials and then doing the Workshop. Assisting them were Karen Tangeman and Bill Everheart, what a team! It’s with great pleasure to announce another workshop and that is the Photography Workshop which is scheduled for Monday, May 14th from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Rick Edwards, our club member, will be doing the Workshop. He comes with very high credentials and you can read about them in this Bearly Bytes. This month Smart Computing was supposed to be our presenter but due to a conflict in their calendar, they sent their apologies but don’t despair. We have a great presentation on two great software programs: Microsoft Digital Image and Windows Live OneCare presented by Karen Tangeman and Rosemary Lloyd. These are two fantastic programs which you can read about in this newsletter. The best part is that these two programs will be given out as door prizes so don’t miss out. At the last Board meeting, we voted in Jim Applebury and Bob Kopolow as Honorary Board Members for their dedication in doing the Question and Answer portion of our general meetings Sue Crane who has been a long time dedicated Computer Club member was made a Lifetime Honorary Computer Club member! ……..Congratulations to one and all!! Bearly Bytes Editor, Gordon West editorbbcc@ charter.net Box 4548, Big Bear City, CA 92314 (909) 584-9776 Letter to the Editor I want to thank everyone who responded when I wrote about my brother’s computer problems. (I never heard from the computer group in Phoenix!) Unfortunately, after using the program that Rosemary suggested, it was determined that his computer had died of old age--it happens to all of us sooner or later. He is now the owner of a new Dell and an on-site service agreement and is struggling to get his Dragon Naturally Speaking to work with Vista. I never cease to be amazed at the wonderful people in the Big Bear area--they are so quick to help where there is a need no matter where it might be. I have lived in lots of communities, but none like this one. Thank you all., Patrice Vint Now More Than Ever…Protecting Precious Content Our daughter sat on the edge of her bed sobbing uncontrollably. Her friends stared at her notebook’s blue screen. She had accidentally hit the wrong key while showing them the shots she had taken on our dive vacation in Kauai. The entire folder was gone. Her brother volunteered his underwater shots but that was no consolation. She had some special turtle, monk seal and nudibranch shots…his shots didn’t compare in her mind. We reminded her that we had her photos on our system as well so everything was not lost. Nothing is better for a father than a “thank you, thank you, thank you” hug from your daughter. But it made us think that we had better plan for a disaster we couldn’t recover from and find a backup solution for all of the systems in the house. So we did a little research. Turns out according to Contingency Planning Research most computer problems are user error (50%) while 20% of the losses are caused by hardware/software error. Everything else was a distant problem – natural disaster, fire, even theft. Our kids are like most teen-agers and in fact most PC users. They have a lot of video content on their systems. While the RIAA (record industry) and MPAA (Hollywood) might look at them and see rampart pirates, the kids could really care less about their stuff…it is all about them. Most of the content they store on their PCs is personal stuff. You know video games of all types – including their connections to WoW (World of Warcraft); music video, sports and YouTube/MySpace downloads; and lots of personal photos/videos they seem to take constantly with their digital cameras and video-enabled cellphones. Most of the material could never be replaced. We then surveyed the adults’ hard drives. Totally different picture. Most of the content was family, household documents along with all of our emails/contact information and the various versions of office work we had done at home. Most of this content could be redone – with a lot of effort – if we lost the hard drive. Not something we wanted to imagine. We were also surprised at how many family moment photos we had in folders that had yet to be sorted…now these could never be replaced! In our research for a fast, easy, almost fool-proof backup and protection solution we were took some consolation in the fact that we weren’t alone in not backing up important family – and business files. According to a study we found at the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) web site, backup isn’t high on most people’s list. That gave us some consolation that at least we weren’t completely negligent or just plain lazy! But still we wanted a solution that would be inexpensive for all of the systems in the house and would allow the systems to be backed up to an external drive locally as well as on the home network. The solution we selected was the NTI Shadow v3.0 (www.ntius.com). It was the same solution that HP had bundled with their Media Vault as well as Toshiba, NEC and Freecom for their portable external drives. The whole idea behind the software is to put an end to losing valuable data, photo, video, and music files that have been modified in between scheduled backups. The software maintains real-time, continuous backup of all changed files. An advanced scheduler is included that lets you set backup start times by minute, hour, day, week, or month. The software installs quickly and easily. When you first launch it, you can choose the folders you want to back up and the location where the backup should be placed. Everyone in the family set up their systems to meet their needs and the primary backup target was our home network storage solution. Because we also use our notebooks away from the house we also set up backup options so that we could do interim backups to USB flash drives…just in case. Next you select backup frequency which for peace of mind we chose as every time a file was changed as well as a specify frequency of time. What we liked about the software is that you can specify how many versions of a document you want to keep. This is important when you’re doing office work at home because you can modify/update and have multiple version backups…just in case. You can also choose to have the backup file deleted when you delete the original file. This significantly reduces that huge backlog of ancient files on the hard drive that you just never quite get around to deleting. Continued on Page 8 Page 5 Les Goldberg from D-Link will be our guest speaker at the September 11th Meeting D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumers and business, today unveiled a family of 3G mobile broadband wireless routers designed to make it even easier for on-the-go consumers, field technicians and mobile professionals to access and share an Internet connection virtually anywhere by blending Wi-Fi(tm) networking technology and a wireless broadband network. The D-Link 3G Mobile Wireless Routers allow users to create a 802.11g/b-compatible wireless hotspot anywhere within range of a cellular network. By plugging a compatible 3G notebook adapter into the D-Link 3G Mobile Router’s built-in card bus slot or a USB-enabled mobile phone, users can get immediate access to EV-DO, UMTS or HSDPA networks. The D-Link router can then share this signal via 802.11g/b Wi-Fi technology to notebooks, PCs or other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. The D-Link routers are available in two versions: the DIR-450 (EV-DO) and DIR-451 (UMTS/HSDPA). “These routers are ideal in situations where a wired broadband connection, such as T1, cable or DSL, is not available,” said Brian Larsen, associate vice president of product development for D-Link Systems, Inc. “For instance, once users insert a notebook adapter into their D-Link 3G Wireless Mobile Router and create a wireless ‘hotspot’, they can then check their email, browse the Web, access their company network and share information with colleagues in ‘virtual meetings’. This solution is significant to the market by enabling communications at temporary work sites such as construction or disaster areas, concerts and others.” For security, both versions support wireless security features to prevent unauthorized access, including WEP, WPA and WPA2 that ensure a secure Wi-Fi network regardless of the connected devices. They also employ dual active firewalls (SPI and NAT) to prevent potential Internet attacks. Both routers can be installed as a wireless network in minutes, and it can easily configure the user’s Internet Service Provider (ISP) settings to quickly establish high-speed Internet connectivity. The built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 switch allows seamless connection of Ethernet-based DIR450 include ACS Wireless, Alltel, Cellular South, Embarq, Sprint and Verizon Wireless. For the DIR-451, UMTS carriers include Orangenet, Vodafone, Exelcom and Maxis, and Cingular, T-Mobile, Exelcom, Maxis, Vodafone, Celcom and Globe for HSDPA formats. Small-to-medium-sized businesses can maximize their investment in a mobile Internet access subscription by using the D-Link 3G Mobile Wireless Router in place of a fixed broadband Internet solution that requires paying additional fees for cable or DSL. The 3G routers not only give additional communications freedom to the mobile user, they also offer the carriers increased value-added revenue opportunities. The DIR-450 (EV-DO) is compatible with the Kyocera KPC 650, Novatel V620 and Sprint PC-5740 notebook adapters, and the Audiovox 8940, Kyocera KX18 and Samsung A890 cell phones. Compatible notebook adapters for the DIR-451 are the Novatel Wireless Merlin U530 and U730, Option Wireless GT 3G Quad Sierra Wireless AirCard 860 and Sony Ericsson GC89. Without a mobile broadband connection data card, the DIR-450 and DIR-451 work as standard 802.11g wireless routers, such as the popular D-Link RangeBooster G models. Price and Availability The DIR-450 is available now for the suggested retail price of $299.99 through D-Link’s network of online retailers and at the D-Link online store, www. dlinkshop.com. The DIR-451 is targeted to begin shipping later this quarter. Manager Les Goldberg D-Link Systems, Inc. D-Link Systems. Inc. The site has free registration and all registered members have an opportunity to upload images, write comments, submit new material, and discuss articles and tutorials at the Forum. They can bring their opinions, question, and ideas. Everybody is welcome. Come, read, comment, write, and share. The website is located at: http://MyPhotosoft.com Page 7 From Page 5 Another option is the ability to select file types to save or not. The program saves all file types by default but with the Shadow Wizard you can specify file types to either backup or ignore. Once you have set up the configuration, which takes just a few minutes, and before it is accepted the Backup Job summary page is displayed. This allows you to review the choices and change any you want. One of the outstanding features of the NTI Shadow solution is that it saves backup copies in regular, native-format which is directly replaceable into the source file without the use of the program. If you’ve accidentally deleted or lost a file you simply drag and drop the file from the Shadow archive back to any desired location. If you have hidden files and folders the software will automatically back them up as you’ve requested. If you copy files or move them the software automatically detects the action and saves it. As we noted when we’re away from the house with our notebooks at school or the office we can also do a backup to a 2GB Store ‘n Go USB drive. There have been times for example when we haven’t wanted to take all of our emails and contact information with us but would still like to have access while we are on the road…just in case. Then no matter which computer we’re using to access the email or address, we can keep the computer up to date and have the information instantly available in our pocket. That’s a lot easier than lugging a notebook computer everywhere we go. We use Shadow to automate the process without having to drill down into folders to find messages, copy them, access the Store ‘n Go and paste them in. All of these tasks are handled by NTI Shadow automatically and in the background. The backup process works transparently in the background without disturbing any of your work or using any valuable PC resources that can slow system performance. One of the other features we liked about NTI Shadow is that you can do your backup to virtually any storage device – USB flash, mobile storage device 9micro drive), internal/external HD, NAS (network attached storage) device, CD and DVD… including the new blue laser discs (HD DVD and BD). While it is true there are a growing number of online storage services such as those offered by Google, Yahoo, Apple and others; we always have concern about: - are they really safe from outside access - will the files always be there when we need them - what happens if the service goes out of business - what happens if the government or law enforcement suddenly decide they want to review all of the files stored by the company<BR Beside there is something reassuring about being able to see your backup device and media. NTI Shadow runs on Windows Vista, XP, Windows 2000, Macintosh OSX v10.2.8, or higher as well as U3 environments. If you want real peace of mind regarding the documents, photos, videos, music and data you have on your system as well as your home network we’d suggest you visit www.ntius.com. Cost is just $29.99. She mentioned that the Club is planning to offer business workshops to companies for their employees to learn software. There will be a photography workshop on May 14, 2007, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Rec & Parks. A $10 donation is asked. Rick, the tutor, brought some of his photos. The club members voted on their favorite to be sent to the User Group Conference in July. We picked the photo of cheetahs. Karen talked about available review software, including games and other software from Microsoft. Kent welcomed guests. Yomar introduced two special raffle prizes. A Microsoft Windows Vista Launch Kit was up for a special raffle. Karen then introduced John Pi from the FBI. He is a counter-terrorism and cyber-crime specialist. His talk was about cyber-intrusion and Internet Security. He gave us a profile of cyber-intruders. Hackers used to be people who knew how to tweak systems and make the more efficient. Today hackers are considered bad. The best hacker is someone who can control a specific computer and manipulate it, rather than someone who uses tools to randomly own many machines. Also, the good ones don’t brag. Amateurs do. To own 5000 machines, a person needs to know vulnerability, only. Adding Unicode commands to web addresses is one. Scanner tools are plentiful and easy to use. With them, a person can obtain information about many computers. One can do a lot if you identify the IP addresses of computers. This includes learning the OS type and firewall. Use a Grinder (Unicode) to look for vulnerabilities in unpatched XP machines. So, 2 or 3 simple steps can allow people to own many computers. To own a particular machine, one needs to learn specifically what its vulnerability is. Then identify the intrusion tool that will work. Test the tool. Then, use it on the target. Next insert a backdoor program. This allows full control of the computer. Once on a computer, one can escalate user privileges. One method is to try extremely long passwords. It doesn’t always work. There are different intrusion types. Get in front of the computer and a person owns it. Social engineering intrusions occur when someone obtains information from a person under false pretenses. Dumpster diving is a big one. People leave a lot of information in the trash. Hacktivists deface web sites to get their message out. They often target large companies. If the activity interferes with business, defacement can cross over to terrorism. Insiders may be involved. Stalking can be done via the Internet. People can post false information in chat rooms, etc. and cause potential harm to someone else. There are chat rooms that contain stolen credit card numbers ready for download. It isn’t illegal to simply have that information. Internet fraud is common in many different forms. This includes everything from using insider information to manipulating stock market prices. Spread rumors to make prices go up or down as needed. This depends on rapid dissemination of information to many people via the Internet. Pornography is rampant. Law enforcement enters chat rooms to try and catch people contacting minors illegally. Some withdraw money illegally from banks. Be careful of e-mail viruses, especially in attachments. DDOS – distributed denial of service sends useless commands or pings from many computers to your server and crashes it. They are hard to trace coming from multiple directions. Check the firewall log for intrusion attempts. Note if your log suddenly gets very long after your computer slow dramatically. Always keep updates current. Set to automatic. Prevention is the key. FBI computers are not on the Internet. Look for ‘https://’ in web addresses that you are going to give private or sensitive information to. That indicates a data encrypted, safe site. Set the firewall to bi-directional. It will monitor outbound as well as inbound traffic. Always change the default password on the firewall. Use a banner on the login screen for legal reasons. People will know that the computer is owned by the company, not the public. If an intrusion occurs, stop the flow of information to minimize damage. Report it to law enforcement. After John’s presentation, Jim Applebury and Bob Kopolow answered a few questions in the RAM session. One question dealt with Yahoo mail. How do you send or reply with BCC (Blind Carbon Copy)? It is a good idea to put your address in the ‘To’ line and ‘BCC’ everyone else. E-mails from AOL users, with pictures attached, may have program code in the body of the e-mail. A user converted record albums to CD. The burned disk won’t play. Try it in different player. Is the Vista firewall bi-directional? Yahoo mail sometimes adds ‘&’ to names in the address book. Be careful when downloading from the Internet, especially if the program is free. Check the download sites on the Internet before using them. Also, don’t open e-mail attachments unless you are expecting them. What causes AOL to log off, then right back on (using broadband)? Remember to lock down wireless routers. Always change the admin password. Many Word users already know how to search for character formats, but you may not know that you can also search for characters that do not have a certain formatting property. To search for characters lacking a certain format, follow these steps: 1. Choose Find from the Edit menu, or press Ctrl+F. (In Word 2007 you display the Home tab of the ribbon and click on Find in the Editing group, or you simply press Ctrl+F.) Word displays the Find tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.) 2. Click on the More button if it is available. 3. Delete anything in the Find What box and click on the No Formatting button if it is available. 4. Click on the Format button, then choose Font. Word displays the Find Font dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.) Notice that all the character attributes (Superscript, Subscript, and so on) in the Effects area are shaded. This means these attributes do not matter; they are ignored by Word when searching. 5. Select the character attributes you don’t want the matched text to have. Make sure the check box beside the attribute is cleared. 6. Click on OK. 7. Click on Find Next. This tip applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007 Page 14 EXCEL TIP WINDOW TIP By Yomar Cleary Nudging a Graphic Applies to Excel 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003 You already know that you can insert graphics in an Excel worksheet, and that you can position those graphics using the mouse. Sometimes using the mouse doesn’t give the greatest amount of control over the placement of an object. For this reason, you may want to only use the mouse to handle the “rough place¬ment” of a graphic. You can then nudge the graphic into its final location. To nudge a graphic, simply make sure it is selected, and then use the arrow keys. Pressing an arrow key moves the graphic in the direction indicated. If you want even finer control, hold down the CTRL key as you press an arrow key. The result is a nudge of a single pixel in the placement of the object. (Thus, if you want to nudge a graphic one pixel to the right, simply hold down the CTRL key as you press the RIGHT ARROW key.) By Larry Smith Protection Settings You can take steps to protect yourself from future attacks. Set your Internet and local intranet security zone settings to “high” so your computer will prompt you before running ActiveX controls and active scripting in these zones. Setting your browser security to “high” applies the highest level of protection from unsafe content that comes across your network. If this setting causes some of your sites not to load properly, you can add those sites individually to your list of trusted sites. However, you should only do so if you are sure that the site is safe to use and is hosted from a company or entity you trust. As a final note, there is a free program that I highly recommend you download called the “Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer” (MBSA) tool that verifies when a security update has been applied to your system. It lets you scan your system for missing security updates as well as common security misconfigurations.
