We’re so excited that scenes from Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force
Awakens were filmed here and that our TV and Movie Trail is now
globally recognised. If sci-fi isn’t your thing then you can still get a

out of this world
The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley is everyone’s everyday-adventure playground and in
2016 we want you to never forget a force of unforgettable experiences.
We are one of the only surviving
ancient woodlands in the UK,
formed by an area that stretches
from Monmouthshire and
South Herefordshire to West
Gloucestershire. Before 1066
a large section was reserved for
royal hunting.
Today the Forest of Dean and
Wye Valley is home to awardwinning accommodation, food
and drink providers, creative
industries, high and low-energy
attractions.
There is no better place in the
world to awaken your senses to
culture, art, heritage, history,
excitement, or taste.
Food and drink
From artisan bars to Michelin
stars we host some of the best
food and drink producers in the
UK. Sip our cider, savour our
cheese or sample our annual
showcase that’s passionately
produced by people dedicated
to quality and flavour.
History and heritage
Hop between the Welsh and
English borders and immerse
yourself in a rich history that
dates from Roman and Medieval,
Anglo Saxon to Tudor and the
epoch-making industrial
revolution. Castles and Keeps,
iron ore, charcoal and free mines,
each has played a role in a
tapestry of events that helped
shape and influence the UK’s
prominence in the world.
Images: Soudley Ponds, extreme biking in the Forest, Storm Troopers surf the Severn Bore
Adventure
From tree-tops to hill tops the
Wye Dean is home to thrills and
spills on land, water, wheels and
sky. Ride the Severn Bore on a
surf board, climb, canoe, fish,
gallop, run, ride, shoot or walk.
Art and culture
An inspiration for generations
of creatives, this year we add
to the region’s cultural heritage
with a TV and Movie Trail,
featuring huge titles such as
Doctor Who, Star Wars, Harry
Potter and The Huntsman.
Artists, film makers, singers,
painters, poets, writers and
photographers recognise the
natural stage our inspirational
flora and fauna offer.
5
You might just recognise Puzzlewood from a number of
popular television series. The ancient forest has been featured
in Dr Who, Merlin and Atlantis to name but a few!
adventure awaits
There truly is something for everyone; be it an adrenaline filled, action packed
adventure or a picnic and gentle stroll though the beautiful scenery. The Forest of
Dean and Wye Valley offer an abundance of new things to try and places to explore.
Here are 20 suggestions to get you started...
1. Get on your bike
3. Venture into the deep
There are a multitude of trails to try,
from family-friendly flat to exhilarating
downhill challenges, two wheels are
the best way to explore the Forest of
Dean and Wye Valley. If you haven’t
got your own kit then Dean Forest
Cycles and Pedalabikeaway are the
affordable way to hire everything you
need or book a guided ride.
Locals have explored the depths of
Clearwell Caves for 4,000 years,
but today's visitors can transport
themselves to a vast underground
labyrinth of passageways, caverns
and rock faces once rich in iron and
now home to mysterious minerals,
flora and fauna. Fantastic for families
and a memorable experience not to
be missed.
Strap on a helmet at Hopewell
Colliery and follow an experienced
miner underground, as you navigate
a route through a section of miles of
tunnels dug out since the 1820s.
4. Pick up a paddle
5. Build a sandcastle
During July and August take a trip to
‘Taurus Crafts Summer Beach’ – 140
square metres of sand with a giant
seascape mural, deckchairs, buckets
and spades and ice creams too.
6. Explore the treetops
There are trails to suit everyone from
the 11 mile Family Cycle Trail to the
nationally acclaimed Verderers’
Trail which offers seven miles of allweather adrenalin. If downhill tracks
are your thing, try the Ski Run or the
Corkscrew, which both lead to
Cannop Cycle Centre.
Unsure of a route to try, then Cycling
Guides are also always ready to help.
2. Cook up a treat
Go on a culinary adventure at Harts
Barn Cookery School where it’s all
about ‘COOKING FOR ALL’ from
Banquets to Basics. Based in the
beautiful Forest at an awe inspiring
site dating back to 1068.
Run the rapids at Symonds Yat or
take a lazy cruise through stunning
scenery, both are fun and unique
ways to experience the dramatic
landscape that changes with every
season. Team up with Way2Go
or Monmouth Canoe & Activity
Centre for boat hire, expert tuition
and guided river trips that guarantee
a splashing good time.
If that sounds too energetic, take a
relaxing trip with Kingfisher Cruises.
Images: Mountain biking, Canoes on the Wye, Taurus Crafts Summer Beach, Go Ape!
With over 20 million trees in the
Forest, Go Ape is set in the perfect
location. Overcome fears or fuel an
appetite for adventure across walkways, climbing nets and zip wires.
For the little monkeys there is a
purpose-designed course for small
aspiring Tarzans.

Clearwell Caves dates back over 4,000 years, with nine fascinating
caverns connected by a network of underground passageways –
you can even venture 200ft underground as part of a
‘Deep Level’ visit!

We are a family owned and run company, set in an idyllic 40 acre farm in the Forest
of Dean with multiple exciting activities on site. The main part of Hillside Archery
is Archery Tag! If you can imagine combining dodge ball and paint ball but using
bows and arrows, (with big foam tips don’t worry) then you’ve probably got a good
idea of what it’s like… adrenaline without the bruises!
Archery tag appeals to all ages from 10+ and it has been said ‘it’s the game you
never grow out of’. It offers a great insight to the sport of archery itself but also
offers true interaction with friends, family or work colleagues in a safe,
fun and unique environment. Whether it’s for a birthday, stag/hen party, corporate
event or family day out Archery tag is a great way to spend the day!
Game time: 2 hour session. Shop and Hillside Brewery on site.

7. Hit the target
Take aim and enjoy a clay pigeon
shoot at DBC Leisure, where you'll
find expert instructors with a keen
eye or find the art of archery with
Forest of Dean Adventure.
Try your hand at archery tag which
combines the experience of archery
and the thrill of dodge ball in a fun,
unique experience at Hillside
Archery.
10. Walk the walk
Nordic walking is a great way to
explore otherwise hidden locations,
enjoy the outdoors and get fit.
Whether you just want a social
walk or something to give you a
bit more of a work out, Way2Go
Adventures are experts who will help
you master the technique through
short walks or longer expeditions.
Severn Bore The Severn Estuary has
the second highest tidal range in the
world, giving rise to the famous
Severn Bore tidal wave around the
spring and autumn equinox.
Newnham on Severn and
Minsterworth are top viewing points.
8. Have fun on a Segway
Get off the beaten track for an hour
of fun with Go Ape’s Forest Segway
Experience. Explore the beautiful
forest on the latest in green technology
- a self-balancing electric Segway.
11. Be aMazed
Try not to get lost as you attempt to
navigate your way through Elton's
Giant Maze or the aMazing Hedge
Puzzle, Symonds Yat.
Enjoy wandering through the ancient
paths, twisted roots and mossy rocks
at the magical Puzzlewood.
9. Climb high
Forest Adventure provides all the
equipment and professional rope skills
to negotiate natural rock outcrops up
to giddy heights with stunning views
at the famous Symonds Yat Rock.
Abseiling offers an alternative to rock
climbing, with a variety of heights up
to 100 feet available.
More boars: In medieval times wild
boar roamed the Forest and now, after
a long absence, they are back in
abundance. They live in family
groups known as ‘sounders’.
12. Time for tee
There are a choice of golf courses
suitable for all levels of expertise.
Forest Hills features a challenging
par-72 course. For some family fun,
tee off at Wye Valley Minature Golf,
an outstanding outdoor course with
all-weather artificial-turf fairways.
They have a picturesque roman ruin
theme, retro minigolf style and
adventure golf suitable for all ages.
Images: Hillside Archery, Climbers at Lancaut, Walking, Puzzlewood
Fast as a falcon: Peregrine falcons can
dive at speeds up to 200mph. They
have nested on the Coldwell Rocks,
Symonds Yat, since 1982.

17. Get steamy
Take life at a slower pace all aboard
a Perrygrove Railway or GWR steam
train. Or, for a fun family day out visit
the Dean Forest Railway, which stops
at five points so passengers can jump
off, enjoy a woodland walk before a
delicious picnic or hearty pub meal.
13. At a canter
Explore miles of quiet, picturesque
bridleways on horseback with a trek
or hack from Greenacres Stables in
Lea. There are also shorter rides
around the nearby country lanes
which can be led in-hand for
younger or less experienced riders.
14. Dive in
If the weather turns inclement, take to
the indoor pools, saunas, courts
and gyms of the area’s numerous
leisure centres.
Officially named as one of Milner Off
Road’s best places to off road in the
UK. Get behind the wheel of a Range
Rover or Land Rover to bump or skid
a 4x4 through the undulating terrain
of Whitecliff's purpose-built off-road
tracks. There are courses for beginners
or black runs for the more ambitious.
16. Get creative
Feeling crafty? Why not create a piece
of ceramic to take home. Eastnor
Pottery offers introductions to basic
hand-building and wheel-throwing
techniques while Taurus Crafts regularly
host courses on pottery, painting,
jewellery making and sculpture.
With miles of countryside in the
forest for you and your fury friend
to explore, The Forest of Dean and
Wye Valley is every dog’s dream
destination. Pick one of many
traffic-free walking routes from
gentle strolls to all-day hikes...
guaranteed enjoyment for any
energetic pooch.
18. And prey
See amazing flying demonstrations
at The International Centre for Birds
of Prey in Newent, the oldest
dedicated birds of prey centre in the
world. With aviaries full of exotic
birds of prey and owls, stunning
gardens and a wonderful family
atmosphere, you are in for a treat.
19. Begin the battle
15. Drive on the wild side
A Dog’s Dream

available at Laser Ops, Symonds Yat
where you can enjoy the fun and
action of close quarter battle with a
special operations twist.

(Emily Blunt), who leaves the kingdom for a colder climate. Alone in her ice
palace, Freya trains a legion of Huntsmen, including Eric (Chris Hemsworth)
and a warrior named Sara (Jessica Chastain).
Freya orders them never to fall in love but things don’t quite work out that way.
In due course, Freya and Ravenna come into conflict with each other as Sara
and Eric struggle to be together again.
The trailer shows several quick-fire shots of Puzzlewood as Sara deftly handles
two swords, and then prepares to fire a flaming arrow at some mysterious looking
characters in the shadows.
It’s the debut feature of director Cedric Nicolas-Troy and the production filmed
some of its axe-wielding action among the trees and rocks in summer 2015.

May the Forest
be with you
The Forest of Dean and
Wye Valley is a gateway
to the far-away worlds of
intergalactic heroes and
villains, eccentric Time
Lords, magicians and
warriors. Now you can
be part of the cast and
crew, just like the writers,
directors, actors and
actresses who have been
inspired or performed on
our outdoor stage.

mythical Lake of Avalon where Merlin
witnesses a magical encounter. The
lake features again in the episode
Excalibur, in which Merlin hides a
sword underwater. In The Lady of the
Lake episode, Merlin says goodbye
to the druid girl Freya whom he has
bravely tried to keep safe from a

Symond’s Yat and
Coppett Hill
Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows, Part 1
The Harry Potter novels have a strong
connection with the Forest of Dean.
During her childhood author J.K.
Rowling lived at Tutshill on the edge
of Chepstow. In The Deathly Hallows,
Part 1 Coppett Hill features in a
snowy scene in which Harry asks
where they are. Hermione explains
that they are in the Forest of Dean
and that she and her family used to
holiday there. Additionally, in the
film trailer there is an aerial view of
Harry, Ron and Hermione walking
along the bank of the River Wye near
Horsehoe Bend at Symond’s Yat.
The Doward and Biblins
King Arthur and the Knights of the
Round Table.
Between Biblins, near Ross-on-Wye,
and Monmouth, on the pathway
along the riverside, is undulating
ground within the trees, behind
which looms a massive wall of
carboniferous limestone rock. This
setting is used in King Arthur as a
council location. Hart’s-tongue fern
prettifies the slightly stark scene.
King Arthur’s cave was filmed at the
prehistoric cave standing in the
shadow of Great Doward, where
protected sorbus trees hang over the
entrance. The cave is a Scheduled
Ancient Monument and rises about
25-feet, so large enough for a man
on horseback to ride in and out.
Raglan Castle
Merlin
Raglan Castle features as the Isle of
the Blessed, a location where the
witches of the Old Religion are
found. In the episode Le Morte
d’Arthur, Merlin is charged by the
Great Dragon to travel to the Isle
of the Blessed to seek a cure for
Arthur who has not fared well in an
encounter with the Questing Beast.
The Isle of the Blessed also features
in the two-part story The Darkest
Hour, where Merlin, Arthur and the
Knights of the Round Table venture
to vanquish the sinister presence of
The Shadow People.

Robin of Sherwood
ITV’s 1980s popular Saturday
evening TV series saw Chepstow
Castle feature in a number of
episodes, including the very first,
Robin Hood and the Sorcerer,
followed by The Enchantment and
The Inheritance. Throughout the
series the castle was a setting known
as Castle Belleme, named for the
character Baron Simon de Belleme,
a nobleman and sorcerer.
Just Visiting
In 2001, Hollywood remade a
hugely popular French comedy
blockbuster entitled Les Visiteurs,
renamed by the Americans as Just
Visiting. The story centers on a
medieval knight who accidentally
time travels to the 21st Century thanks
to the efforts of an incompetent wizard.
The knight finds himself contending
with modern life, however, before
this turn of events we see him in
splendid surroundings of forests and
castles, with the film’s opening
woodland scenes filmed at Lydney
Park Gardens.
Atlantis
Who would have thought that the
Mediterranean could so readily be
imagined in the Forest of Dean? For the
BBC series Atlantis, Ninewells, near
Coleford, featured as the Athenian
Wood.

wye walker
Walking is one of the most popular outdoor activities in
the area. For short walks suitable for most abilities and all
ages, pick up the ‘12 Easy Walks’ leaflet, or download a
free copy from wyedeantourism.co.uk.
Here is a brief introduction to four of the walks...
Symonds Yat
This walk starts below Symonds Yat
Rock in the steep sided, wooded
gorge at the pleasant village of
Symonds Yat East.
Start with a river crossing with a
difference using the ancient hand
pulled ferry. The walk then follows
the beautiful river banks with places
of interest; an abundance of wildlife
including a spot frequented by
Peregrine falcons and the opportunity
to pause and relax as you watch
canoeist on the river.
Cross the river again over a foot
suspension bridge to circle back to
your starting point.
Why not finish your walk with some
refreshment or a bite to eat on the
terrace of the Saracens Head Inn,
situated on the east bank of the Wye.
Cannop Ponds
A short walk through magical, oak
and fir woodland. The route visits
Cannop Ponds, where you may
see swans, geese and ducks including
brightly coloured mandarin ducks.
The pond was built to power a huge
waterwheel at Parkend. Continue
along the track to find a Forest
Freemine and an unusual monument.
Brockweir
This two mile, figure of eight walk is
centred on the picturesque village of
Brockweir. The walk is mainly level
along the Wye Valley on old railway
tracks, the riverbank and minor
roads, part in Wales.
The railway ran from Chepstow to
Monmouth and closed to passengers
in 1959; taking the steam train along
this scenic valley must have been
delightful.
This route is steeped in history, with
many points of interest.
The walk starts and finishes at The
Old Station Tintern. The signal box
has changing exhibitions from local
artists and the caféis in the Victorian
waiting room.
Lydney Docks
This very short walk takes in the
sights of Lydney Harbour, a place
steeped in history and heritage. From
Roman times through the industrial
revolution and well into the 20th
century Lydney Harbour has been
a cornerstone of the River Severn’s
heritage.
The Severn Estuary is one of the UK’s
national heritage jewels, known the
world over for its massive tidal range
and internationally important habitat,
but even more so for its history of
exporting and as one of the UK’s
principle sea links to the rest of the
world. Lydney Harbour has played a
full part in making the Severn Estuary
the gateway from the South West to
the rest of the world.

A stroll or a hike?
Easy Access
For those of you who’d like a gentle
introduction to the Forest or who
have a wheelchair or pushchair
there are routes at Mallards Pike
Lake and the Cyril Hart Arboretum.
Circular and Linear Short Walks
If you prefer a bit more of a
challenge or have a special interest
there are plenty of opportunities to
indulge yourself including the
Sculpture Trail, Penallt Pubs
Circular, Darkhill Iron Works Walk,
Daffodil Way and the Poets Path.
Long Distance
For more of a challenge there are
several long distance trails such as

out of this world
Fantastic public art can be found
along the Forest of Dean Sculpture
Trail, while the annual Forest &
Valley Open Studios event lets
visitors take a peek inside some of
the most creative spaces in the UK.
All this and dozens of charming
galleries, luscious gardens and arts
centres tucked away in hamlets,
towns, and villages.
Many of our artists are
attracted to the region as it
is such an inspiring place
to work. Sculptors, writers,
poets, painters, potters,
photographers and film
makers all feel the force
of nature in their work.
Some stunning pieces of pottery can
be acquired in the area, with numerous
local studios, inspired by the beauty
of the surrounding nature. Browse,
buy, admire or get stuck-in throwing
a pot at Eastnor Pottery. Visit the
unique Mary Rose Young Pottery,
with its ‘Paint Your Own Plate’ point,
where you can utilise the same
'Mary Rose Technique' that produces
such vivid colours.
For every age and budding artist
there are countless craft centres such
as the wonderful Taurus Crafts and
Abbey Mill, plus many pop-up
events throughout the year.
Everyone can unleash their creative
potential because thanks to our four
seasons there are four reasons to come
here and be inspired by nature’s raw
material. Beginners and experts can
go home with stunning photographs,
a striking painting, or unique craft.
Visit the Forest & Valley Open
Studios website (fandvos.org.uk) for
more information about the best
local artists.
