and watching the Wendy’s High School Heisman television special on ESPN2,
Sunday, December 14th, to see who will be named the 2014 National Winners.
In preparation for the television special, an ESPN camera crew will be here, on
Fort Walton’s campus, Wednesday and Thursday, November 19th and 20th,
following Trey around and gathering footage for this special televised
broadcast.
We will be having our winter sports pep rally on Wednesday, November 19th,
and the ESPN crews will be filming it. If you do not want your child do be in the
filmed audience please have them go to the supervised study hall in the
cafeteria instead of attending the pep rally.
We are also asking for support from our students on Wednesday:

Sophomores & Juniors are being asked to wear BLUE
Seniors are being asked to wear RED
Attention FWBHS Parents: Please complete the
climate survey described below. **This is the annual
survey that Okaloosa County parents are asked to
complete. It is different from the survey that was
sent to parents via email (two weeks ago) from the
Professional Development office.
School Climate Survey (for parents to complete)
This year’s School Climate Survey is available through the Grades Online/Parent Portal. Parents may go to www.okaloosaschools.com – choose
Parent Portal from the menu (on the right side of page) – use their child’s log in &
PIN (log in is the student number/PIN is the last four of the student number) and
follow the instructions to complete the survey. The survey is available in English
and Spanish.
This survey provides valuable information for the leadership in your child’s
school. Parents are encouraged to complete the survey before May 2015.
Attendance Office Procedures
Contact: J. Tucci or B. Craig (833-3300 ext. 3326 or 3301)
The attendance office would like to thank those who send in notes when their
student is absent. With so much activity in the attendance office and with 1,750
students to keep up with, notes help to create a paper trail to fall back on if there
is a discrepancy with absences.
Parents, with the holidays quickly approaching, please remember to send notes
for absences, late check ins, and early check outs. Please include your
student’s legal first and last name, grade, dates of the absence, and dismissal
times (if necessary) on the note. If you know in advance that your
student will be missing school, it is helpful if you send a note prior to the
absence.
The week of November 17th through 21st and December 15th through 18th, we will
be accepting notes or parent in person for checkouts. Phone calls for
checkouts will not be permitted. Also, please do not fax in a request for a
student to check out. There is not a fax machine in the attendance office – and
the machines in the main office and the guidance office are not continually
monitored. Please plan ahead for checkouts during these weeks.
Thank you for your help in keeping your student’s attendance up-to-date!

The Crucible
Contact: C. Whittaker (833-3300 ext. 1819 or
[email protected])
Tickets are now on sale for The Crucible at Fort Walton Beach High School, 400
Hollywood Blvd, in Fort Walton Beach. Performances are Thursday through
Saturday, November 13 -15, at 7:00pm and Sunday, November 16 at 2:00pm.
Tickets are $10 general admission and are available at the school office or at the
door before the performances.
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is an ageless tale of fear, greed and power
written by one of the greatest American playwrights of all time. It is a powerful,
fictional re-telling of a historical moment in 17th century America: the witch trials
of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. A play famous for rousing the conscience of
America, and one of the landmark dramas of the century, it depicts how difficult
it is to defend principles and human dignity under conditions of paranoia, fear,
and hysteria. Written as an allegory of the insidious spread and reach of
McCarthyism in the early 1950s, The Crucible is a story of a village overtaken by
religious fervor and mounting panic, where people are arrested for being
witches without evidence. In Salem, matters of good and evil are clearly
defined; dissent is not merely unlawful, it is associated with satanic activity.
When a group of girls claim they are afflicted by witchcraft, John Proctor
(Ahmahdre Turner) and his wife Elizabeth (Lana Harley), suspect their former
servant Abigail (Madelynn Robichaux) of conspiring to get rid of Elizabeth so
that she can resume an illicit relationship with John that he had broken off
months earlier. The beleaguered town minister, Reverend Parris (Jimmy
Pierce), sends for Reverend Hale (Matthew Barkley) and Deputy Governor
Danforth (Derek Raynaud) to get to the bottom of the girls’ strange behavior. As
the proceedings wear on, it becomes apparent that even after the testimony of
Mary Warren (Lauren Abel), one of the originally afflicted girls who testifies she
only pretended to be afflicted, logic disintegrates and the hysteria takes on a life
of its own, creating a climate of fear and revolt, where dozens of innocent
people are convicted and hanged for not confessing to witchcraft.
For more information or to receive a study guide for teachers to use in
conjunction with the play, contact director Christa Whittaker at
[email protected] or at (850)833-3300 x1819. Discounted
tickets are available for groups of 10 or more. Information is also available on
