Small businesses look to go green
Whether it’s the feel-good
factor or consideration of the
bottom line, going green is
a growing business trend.
Nearly half (47 percent) of
the small business owners
responding to a Wells Fargo/
Gallup survey said they take
action to show their customers they are environmentally friendly. In addition, 89
percent of the respondents
consider it very important
or somewhat important for
America’s small businesses
to actively support efforts
to protect and improve the
environment.
“Collectively, small businesses can have a tremendous impact on broad societal issues, which is clearly
the case regarding environmental preservation,” says
Giovanni Coratolo, executive
director of the Chamber ’s
Council on Small Business.
Two-thirds (66 percent) of
the survey respondents said
they would pay more to buy
environmentally-friendly
products and services. Of
those, 48 percent said they
would pay five percent more
for such goods and services.
Another 34 percent would
pay 10 percent more, while
18 percent would pay more
than 10 percent. However,
about one-half (49 percent)
said they did not think their
customers would pay more
for environmentally-friendly
products.
Some 60 percent of the
respondents said that funding for research and development of alternative energy
sources is the most important anti-global warming
initiative. Efforts to promote
recycling and funding safer
ways to dispose of garbage
and hazardous waste were
also considered top priorities.
Above: Jeff Salks, manager and one of the owners, stands in front of the store’s eco-friendly lightbulb section. Below: Eric Fusco and Sean Jordan rearrange the new display of bulbs under signs
announcing cheaper bills with the new bulbs. (Photos by Darcie Di Saia.)
Here are a few easy ways to
make your company greener:
• Reduce your paperwork
by invoicing electronically
• Buy recycled paper and
supplies
• Offer incentives for
employees to use
public transportation
• Use ceiling fans to
reduce air-conditioning
costs
• Reduce your hot water
temperature by two
degrees and insulate the
tank
• Use energy-saving light
bulbs

Mayor's Message
MAYOR SCOTT AVEDISIAN
With growing concerns about
the state of the economy, it was
heartening to examine various residential and commercial projects
underway throughout the city last
year and see the investment that
homeowners, private companies
and non-profit agencies continue
to make in Warwick.
A review of the Building
Department’s listing of commercial projects, including new construction, renovations or additions
to existing structures and hotels/
motels, shows private developers’
investment of over $77.3 million in
2007. These figures don’t take into
account new or major improvements to residential buildings
or other miscellaneous projects,
which total nearly $33 million.
Warwick’s business base is a
wide-ranging mix of small com-
panies, retail, office parks and
tourism-related enterprises. All of
these are reflected in 2007 investments here, with projects ranging from a 4,250 square-foot facility to two office buildings, totaling 200,000 square feet, near the
Crowne Plaza Hotel. One of the
buildings – at 120,000 square feet –
will be home to Davol Inc.’s world
headquarters.
Warwick is also home to Kent
Hospital, which serves residents
in the greater Kent County region,
and a growing need for medical
office space is clearly evident.
Roughly half a dozen facilities
have either been completed or are
under construction and are located
not far from the hospital’s complex.
On the Border and Chipolte’s
restaurants were completed last
year, and work on a Texas Road
House restaurant began on the
Warwick/East Greenwich border
before the New Year. Area residents are eagerly awaiting completion of the NYLO Hotel and other
facilities at historic Pontiac Mills,
as well as renovations to Warwick
Mall, which will soon welcome
Target as one of its anchor stores.
As 2008 progresses, there are a
number of exciting projects in the
planning stages, with developers
working with a variety of municipal offices to secure the appropriate permits and approvals.

New electronic filing requirements for tax-exempt organizations
Two new electronic filing requirements for tax-exempt organizations

First, certain tax-exempt organizations will have a new filing requirement
imposed by the Pension Protection Act
of 2006. For tax periods beginning after

Second, some tax-exempt organizations will be required to electronically
file their Forms 990. For tax years ending on or after Dec. 31, 2006, tax-exempt
organizations will be required to e-file
if they have $10 million or more in total
assets and file 250 or more returns a
year. In addition, private foundations
and charitable trusts will be required to
e-file Forms 990-FP regardless of their
asset size, if they file at least 25 returns.

For a small business, taking the first steps into advertising can be an intimidating and mysterious process.
Even though we see advertising everywhere, creating
and using ads ourselves can
seem alien and expensive.
Understanding how the
medium works and what it
can and cannot do for a small
business is tougher than it
seems…and there’s always
uncertainty over results.
Think of advertising as one
element of the broader area of
marketing. You recognize it in
many forms, including magazines, newspapers, directories, online search engine
ads, Web site banners, radio
spots, TV, billboards, flyers,
direct mail and others. Before
you spend your hard-earned
money on advertising, you’ll
want to investigate what to
realistically expect. Only then
should you draw up a plan
for moving ahead.
Advertising can do the following:
• Attract new customers,
prospect and leads
• Encourage existing customers to spend more on
your product or service
• Build credibility, establish and maintain your
“brand” or unique
business identity, and
enhance your reputation
• Inform or remind customers and prospects of
the benefits your business has to offer
• Promote your business
to customers, investors
and others, and slowly
build sales
But here’s what advertising
probably can’t do:
• Create an instant customer base
• Solve your cash flow or
profit problems by producing an immediate sales
windfall
• Cure poor or indifferent
customer service
• Create benefits that
don’t really exist, or sell
products and services that
nobody wants
In short, advertising won’t
guarantee quick sales for your
product or service by itself,
but it will get you noticed if
you do it right. That means
you must know, as precisely
as possible, the demographics
of your target audience and
craft a precise message about
your product or service that
will touch them. You must
give customers a compelling
reason to call, visit your Web
site or stop by your business.
Your ad must also stand
out in some way. If it fails
to grab your potential customers, they’re not likely to
respond. Frequency is also
key. A single ad in one place
won’t do much. Getting people to see your ads as often
as possible in different places
will deliver better results.

Five ways to save on prescription drugs
By Tara Higgins, R.PH.
equivalent. It has the same active
ingredients, is equally effective and is
approved by the FDA.
• Try mail order. All Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) members who have prescription drug coverage can order drugs through WellPoint
Pharmacy Management’s PrecisionRx
program. If you take daily maintenance
medication for chronic conditions such
as high blood pressure or diabetes, consider using PrecisionRx. The medication is shipped to your home, and you
may pay a lower co-payment than at
the pharmacy.
• Ask your doctor about over-thecounter (OTC) drugs. Sometimes, an
OTC drug can be just as effective as
a prescription drug for certain minor
conditions, such as a cough or a runny
nose. Frequently, they cost less than
a co-payment. Ask your doctor if an
OTC drug would work for you.
• Talk to your doctor about healthy
lifestyle changes. Many health prob-
With the cost of prescription drugs
soaring, many people are looking for
ways to save money at the pharmacy.
These tips can help lower the amount
you pay out of pocket:
• Consider generic drugs. Next
time you fill a prescription, ask your
pharmacist or doctor whether a generic equivalent is available. If a generic
isn’t available for the specific drug
you’re taking, ask whether there is
another generic that could treat your
condition. Brand-name drugs, like any
brand name product, are more expensive because of advertising costs, as
well as the cost of research and development. According to the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA), generic
drug co-payments are much lower
than co-payments for brand drug
names. A generic drug is essentially the same drug as its brand name
Safety
PProtecting your family from carbon monoxide
During the coldest of
winter months, a rise
in your heating bill
isn’t the only thing to
worry about. Turning
up the thermostat can
drastically increase
your chances of carbon
monoxide (CO) poisoning.
CO is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, toxic gas, which
according to the U.S.
Consumer Products
Safety Commission,
takes 140 lives per
year. By entering your
lungs and displacing the oxygen from
your bloodstream, CO
interrupts your normal supply of oxygen
to the heart, brain and
other vital organs.
Produced by the incomplete combustion of gas, oil, coal, wood, gasfired appliances, charcoal grills, woodburning furnaces or fireplaces, and
motor vehicles, CO can accumulate in
your home and put your family at risk.
Therefore, a CO detector is essential to
detect traces of CO in your home.
Mild CO exposure can cause side
effects that are often mistaken for the
flu, including a slight headache, nausea
and fatigue. Moderate exposure to CO
can cause a severe throbbing headache,
drowsiness, confusion, vomiting and
increased heart rate. Extreme exposure
to CO can cause unconsciousness, convulsions, cardio respiratory failure and
death.
If your CO detector alarm sounds,
turn off all your appliances, open the
windows and doors, and evacuate
everyone from your home. Once you
and your family are out of the house,
call 911 immediately.

lems, such as high blood pressure and
high cholesterol, may be helped by eating a more nutritious diet, exercising
more and reducing stress. Talk to your
doctor about how you can reduce your
need for medication or even stop taking medications altogether. However,
don’t stop taking medications without
speaking to your doctor, even if you
think your condition is under control.
• Take medications as prescribed.
When you take certain medications,
such as antibiotics, it’s important to
finish all of the medicine prescribed,
even if you are feeling better. If you
don’t, you could end up taking a second round of medicine. Taking medication incorrectly can also lead to other
health problems, which can hurt both
your health and your wallet.

10 Reasons to keep kids off soda
•
•
•
•
•
Soda contains no nutrients,
and is high in calories and
sugar. Studies show a strong
link between soda consumption and childhood obesity.
Soda suppresses the appetite so kids are less likely to
eat nourishing foods. Soda
drinkers are less likely to
get the recommended levels
of vitamin A, calcium and
magnesium.
Phosphorus, a common
ingredient in soda, depletes
calcium in the bones. Girls
w h o d r i n k m o re s o d a
are more prone to broken bones. Doctors are
becoming concerned
about the health impact
of carbonated beverage
consumption on teenage girls.
Studies show a direct
link between tooth decay
and soda. Not only does
the sugar cause cavities,
the acids in soda erode
tooth enamel, which begins
in only 20 minutes.
Caffeine is known to create
•
physical dependence, and
upsets the normal balance of
neurochemistry in the developing brains of children.
Caffeine stimulates the adrenal gland without providing
the nourishment it needs. In
large amounts, caffeine can
lead to adrenal exhaustion,
especially in children. Colas
contain 35 to 38 milligrams
of caffeine per 12-ounce can.
Drinking a lot of soda every
day can lead to blood sugar
disorders,
•
•
•
•
including diabetes.
Aspartame, used in diet
sodas, is a potent brain toxin
and endocrine disrupter.
Citric acid, often found in
soda, may contain traces of
MSG. MSG is another potent
brain toxin. The artificial flavors found in soda may also
contain traces of MSG.
Drinking sodas regularly can
upset the fragile, acid-alkaline balance of the stomach,
creating a continuous acid
environment. This prolonged acid environment
can lead to inflammation of
the stomach and duodenal
lining, which can be quite
painful.
Sodas act as dehydrating
diuretics, much like tea,
coffee and alcohol, and can
inhibit proper digestive
function.

Effective Business Writing - April 9th
with Bob Cipriano
One of the things you can count on everyday is that you will
have to write something. The difference between
personal and business writing is what this seminar is all
about. Whether you write memos, letters, reports,
proposals, articles, e-mail, or performance reviews, you will
learn the skills and techniques to improve the quality of your
writing.
Making Better Use of Your Time - May 14th
Time is the most precious resources. Yet we battle daily to
make the best use of it. You don’t need to struggle
anymore. If you want to get more work done in less time
with less stress, then this is the seminar for you. Learn
how to get two more hours of work done without working
longer.
No Pressure Selling - May 28th
If you avoid high pressure selling like most people do, then
you learn what the superstars know. Change your whole
perspective on selling. Learn how to get new
customers and build on old ones. Increase your closing rate
without pressure selling. Develop your ‘Unique Selling
Advantage.’ No pressure selling works!
Basics of Supervision - June 11th
Many promotions into management are based on job
knowledge or personal experience. Learning how to
manage people is seen as something that is easily learned
on the job. People soon find out that this is difficult. This
seminar will focus on the human side of managing - how
to motivate others, develop teamwork and cooperation,
handle employee problems and develop employees to their
maximum ability. Don’t miss out.
Combining advanced materials, technology and sociological research, look
for your cube to shrink in size, but be
more hip in the future. According to a
Time magazine story “Redrawing the
Cube,” by Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, cubes
are here to stay, but they will be transforming in possibly intriguing ways in
the near future. Here are some cube facts
and possibilities:
• Seventy percent of office workers
sit in cubes
• In the 1970s, a typical workstation
was 12 feet by 12 feet
• In 1995, a typical workstation was
10 feet by 10 feet
• Today’s workstations average six
feet by eight feet, and cube planners say
they can reduce the space by 21 percent
without reducing productivity
• Forty-five percent of workers say
they do their best work in their own
personal space
• The top complaint when it comes to
privacy? Overheard conversations, particularly loud cell phone talkers
New cube features to look forward to
include:
• Desks that have adjustable heights
• Colored overhead lighting panels.
Green means you are available to talk.
Red means you are busy and not to be
bothered
• Semi-enclosed areas for cell phone
use — areas will enhance signal boosters and reduce the level of noise
• Translucent cubes that allow for a
view, but also include doors to increase
sound privacy
• Enclosed seating areas, where people can get together for chats without
disturbing their neighbors
• Get ready for yurts, shell-like enclosures that muffle noise and provide
some privacy for small groups
• Individual desktop temperature

RI sees improvement in state competitiveness rankings
Moving up four places since 2006, Rhode
Island was one of the fastest-moving states in the
Beacon Hill Institute at
Suffolk University’s State
Competitiveness Report 2007.
This year, Rhode Island
ranked 21st overall, bolstered by strong showings in
the technology, security and
human resources categories.
Rhode Island has moved
up 10 places in the rankings
since 2005.
Rhode Island ranked seventh in the technology subindex, which measured states’
R&D capacity, inhabitants
with science and engineering degrees, the number of
patents per 100,000 residents
and National Institutes of
Health support to institutions per capita. According
to the index, Rhode Island
placed third in the amount
of science and engineering
degrees awarded per 100,000
inhabitants and placed fifth
in NIH support.
Rhode Island’s improvement in the rankings reinforces that leadership must
aggressively continue with
efforts to help Rhode Island
businesses transition from an
old industrial economy to a
new knowledge-driven innovation economy, and continue to promote new company
creation in innovation-economy industries.
The report also cited Rhode
Island’s low crime and murder indexes. The state also
fared well in the human
resources subindex, placing
15th overall in the category.
According to the human
resources subindex, the number of people without health
insurance in the state is the
lowest in the nation.
Rhode Island also ranked
well for the percent of the
p o p u l a t i o n e n ro l l e d i n
degree-granting institutions (fifth), the percent of
adults who are in the labor
force (17th) and the rate of
non-federal physicians per
100,000 inhabitants (sixth).
Rhode Island has seen $7
billion in new investment
since 2005, including new
or planned buildings, new
industrial developments,
expansion of existing companies, and private investment in infrastructure. The
economy has created many
new jobs — more than 20,000
from 2002 to 2006, and 5,700
in 2006 alone, which was
the fastest job growth rate
in New England. These factors were contributors to
improvements in Rhode
Island’s ranking.
