Enrichment
Guide
Achieving Success Together
Dear Student,
Welcome to the DLD Enrichment Programme Guide. This guide describes all college activities beyond
the limits of the classroom.
Our wide Enrichment Programme supports our academic curriculum and forms an integral part of
the wider education and college experience offered to our students. Our vision is to create all-rounded
students, who excel academically and further develop their emotional, interpersonal and social skills.
All students are encouraged to participate in one or more of our range of co-curricular activities.
This participation is important for students both as an opportunity for recreation and as an effective
way to improve the quality of their UCAS personal statement and CV in the future.
In an increasingly competitive society, academic excellence alone may not guarantee success.
University Admissions Officers and employers are particularly interested in students’ activities outside
the classroom. These activities provide solid evidence of skills, which are essential for academic
and professional success, such as creative imagination, time-management, team-playing, critical
thinking and conflict resolution. Spending time in a co-curricular activity now may prove an invaluable
investment in future success.
Apart from our co-curricular activities, our
Enrichment Programme embraces a variety of
activities and events, which provide spiritual,
moral, social and cultural development (SMSC)
and pastoral support, assisting our students
throughout the process of their UCAS application,
offering career advice and promoting a sense of
community in the College.
We hope that you will find the information in this
guide useful. If you have any questions, feel free
to contact us ([email protected]).
Best wishes,
Dr Aris Rogkotis
Vice Principal - Welfare

Music
The Music department is extremely well equipped and includes a recording studio and
various practice areas. All our rooms are soundproofed from the rest of the College and
can be quickly converted for recording purposes. Anyone with an interest in music can take
part in our enrichment activities. Don’t be shy if you are a beginner, many students will be
new to making music too. The following co-curricular activities are on offer this year:
Vocal Group
The Vocal Group welcomes all who are interested in any form of singing from soul to gospel, folk, classical, and
pop. Get together and have a sing-along and take part in concerts of all kinds.
Ukelele Group
We welcome all students whether they are beginners or experienced guitar players. This has proved to be
fantastically popular with students and staff. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced you will be
able to progress very quickly and even perform at one of our concerts!
Recording Studio Club
Our recording studio is available for any group of students to use. Whether you are in a band, singersongwriter, beat boxer, instrumentalist or want to record a radio sketch, we’re here to help you create
professional quality recordings of your work. This is also useful for creating a demo disc for gigs, a present for
your family or if you are aspiring to become rich and famous.
Private Music Lessons
We currently offer: classical and jazz piano tuition, rock guitar, pop singing (with optional compositional
tuition), singing (popular and classical styles) and drum kit. We can also offer instrumental lessons on demand if
you wish to study an instrument not already listed above. These lessons are taught individually and at different
times to your academic lessons.
Coordinator: Peter Hopkins ([email protected])
“The best part about the Ukulele Club is that I don’t only get to
learn how to play my favourite songs, but also have fun in doing
so! My week just wouldn’t be the same without the laughs and self
expression that happens during our 40 minute sessions. We also get
to perform at school concerts, which is always something to look
forward to at the end of each term. The Ukulele Club is the best
co-curricular activity I have taken part in.”

Art
The Art department is a centre of creative activity and energy; students enjoy learning Art,
Design, Photography and Animation. The department has very large and well-equipped
studios. We use a wide range of stimulating materials, techniques, ideas, books and
visuals to inspire and develop students’ creativity. We offer co-curricular Life Drawing,
Photography and Animation classes.
“In my two years of attending ECA Photography, I can honestly say
that every lesson has been fun, and useful as we learnt a variety of skills.
These lessons also helped me with my art work as they enabled me to
take higher quality photographs. I think that students should have a basic
understanding of Photography and ECA provides that without becoming
mundane due to the informal atmosphere and rapid change of topics in
each session”.
Daniels Ulms, DLD Graduate
8
9
Life Drawing
Inspired by the human form, students are taught how to observe and record the shape, form, structure, scale,
perspective, tone, light and shade. Students explore, experiment and develop skills through the use of a wide
range of materials and approaches, including pencil, charcoal, pastel, inks, collage and mixed media. Some
prior experience of GCSE Art would be beneficial.
Coordinator: Helen Wright ([email protected])
Photography
ECA Photography is open to all students; previous experience is not required. ECA Photography also helps
Art and Design students create work for their portfolios, especially useful for onward progression. All students
have the time to explore studio and location shoots which are developed using a host of technologies and
digital techniques, and they are manipulated, printed and critiqued. These images may be used in a variety
of subjects and enable personal and creative exploration. This course provides an enriching and creative
opportunity that enhances your learning experience.
Coordinator: Andy Knight ([email protected])
10
Portfolio Workshop
Promoting best practice in Art and Design study, this course enables Art, Graphic Communication and
Photography students of all qualifications to build on coursework and prepare a personal body of work prior
to university interview. Students have the opportunity to experiment with a vast range of materials (traditional /
non-traditional), and work in 2D or 3D mediums.
Coordinator: Helen Wright ([email protected])

Drama
DLD Youth Theatre (Est.2001)
Please tick the boxes that apply to you (you can tick these boxes as this is now your Enrichment Guide).
I like to play games
I am interested in making new friends
I like to challenge my own perception of things
I don’t think you can train the imagination
I have a healthy curiosity
I like risk
If you have ticked one box, you should probably think about joining the YT.
If you have ticked three boxes, you MUST join the YT.
If you have ticked all six boxes, your adventure has already begun.
If you are interested in staying the same and being safe, don’t join the Youth Theatre, but if you have the
capacity to change then get involved.
The LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) examinations
Solo, pair or group opportunities exist for those who want to pursue their acting abilities to a higher level.
Gold and silver medals accredited by the Academy are regularly awarded to our students and with these come
valuable extra UCAS points.
An extract from the LAMDA video on the DLD website:
Q: Why did you take up the LAMDA course?
A: I knew that I wanted to do LAMDA because I enjoyed acting but had no idea that it would make me want to change my courses and take up A Level Drama –this is a decision I’m so glad I made.
Q: What have you got out of it?
A: I am so much more confident with speeches and now that I have my Silver Medal, I’m determined to get the Gold next year.
Drama School Auditions
The Drama department will first assess your suitability for application. We will help you decide what schools
are appropriate for your needs as well as choosing potential speeches. Acting classes to help you explore the
speeches and techniques to help you audition will then be arranged.
Coordinator: Peter Hopkins ([email protected])

Sport
At DLD we recognise the benefits of regular sport. We want to encourage as many of
our students as possible to lead an active lifestyle and therefore a ‘healthy body - healthy
mind’ principle. All Sport activities take place in the local Sports Centre. The following
co-curricular activities are on offer this year:
Boys’ football
This is an extremely popular activity. We play and practise twice a week during term time. It is fun for all those
who participate but also we have a focused Football First XI team, who were runners up in the Independent
Colleges’ 8 a-side Football Association League (IC8FA) 2013/14 and this year were crowned 8-a-side League
Champions 2014-15.
Basketball
This is a popular event and we practise once a week at 4.40pm every Monday afternoon and play at the local
Sports Centre on their indoor Basketball court. Students enjoy the fun elements of the sessions as well as
improving their skills and maintaining their fitness.
Rock-climbing
Sign up and join our Rock Climbing Club, which is held at the West 1 Seymour Leisure Centre one evening
each week. All the safety equipment is provided and expert instructors are on hand every step.
Badminton Club
The Badminton Club offers students the chance to play on 4 indoor courts every Tuesday. Students will meet at
4.40pm to travel to and play at the Jubilee Sports Centre, and can enjoy the social aspects as well as the health
benefits of a physical activity.
Cricket
This sport is offered one evening a week and it will take place at Lord’s Cricket Academy, St John’s wood. It
is open to both boys and girls, the one requirement is that students must comply with Lord’s dress code of
wearing cricket whites (white top, half or full sleeve, and trousers no shorts). We will provide safety equipment.
Coordinator: Sean Gallagher ([email protected])
“Football has been a sport that I have gravitated towards for as long as I can remember, nothing quite
compares to that of DLD College. The training laid on by Head Coach, Prad Koppa, provides the
perfect opportunity to constantly improve your ability while maintaining those unquestionably
important friendships.”
Jack Webster, DLD Graduate

Yoga and meditation
Once a week, we offer classes in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. It is a modern day yoga that is a vigorous yet
empathic form of workout that increases flexibility, tones your muscles, promotes weight loss and helps you
fight stress. The term Vinyasa refers to the alignment of movement and breath, a method which turns static
yoga postures into a dynamic flow. The basic premise of Ashtanga yoga is that it produces an intense internal
heat by synchronising movement with breathing while practising a set sequence of postures. This heat purifies
the muscles and organs, expelling unwanted toxins as well as releasing beneficial hormones and minerals
which can nourish the body when the sweat is absorbed back into the skin. Meditation sessions may be
arranged with Eva upon request.

Mindfulness and wellbeing
As part of our enrichment programme, we offer a lunchtime mindfulness group.
Mindfulness is a stress reduction technique to promote inner wellbeing. Come along and listen to calming
music, bringing your focus to the present moment - a relaxing way to let go of stress and recharge in
the middle of the day. This can be particularly useful during exam period! There are also healthy lifestyle
discussions, including making healthy food choices. Come along and find your inner peace.

EPQ
(Extended Project Qualification)
Provided by AQA, the EPQ has already proved to be very popular with students and
teachers alike. This qualification provides an opportunity for students to exercise their
abilities beyond the A Level syllabus and prepare for university or their future career.
They can also use it to earn extra UCAS points.
Who should do an Extended Project?
- Students wishing to apply to Oxbridge (it gives them a chance to show evidence of personal
interest in a particular area). The presentation itself would be an excellent preparation for the interview
- Students who wish to enhance their application to top universities
- Students who wish to gain essential skills for higher education. They will develop their learning skills and
explore a topic of interest in depth.
Cross-curricular activities and cooperation is warmly encouraged and various members of staff have
contributed to the 30 hours of teaching required.
Coordinator: Simon Pearson ([email protected])
“I thoroughly enjoyed working on the EPQ. I found it an extremely
rewarding experience which enabled me to conduct independent
research into the causes of dementia and its impact on individuals,
society and the economy.”
Emma Harrison, DLD Graduate

DLD College Council
Students are encouraged to become part of the College Council to represent their year
group. The Student Council consists of 10-12 members with an elected Head, Deputy
Head and Secretary. The Council meets regularly and aims to improve students’ everyday
life at DLD and promote a sense of community across the College.
Members of the Council are also ambassadors in the College and contact points for other students. College
Council representatives should aim to help students feel welcome socially, and be role models for general
good conduct. They should voice concerns and ideas for improvements to staff during meetings or at any
other times.
“The best thing about being part of the Student
Council is representing the entire student community.”
Robin Ng, President of the Student Council
20
Debating Club
This is an increasingly popular activity, in which students learn skills in persuasive
techniques, logical thinking and teamwork; which is all relevant to their schoolwork.
The weekly motions address a range of topical issues and the debates are organised
and chaired by members of the Club and our highly experienced debate coach Adam
Hawksbee. Throughout the year the students will enter a range of competitions offering
opportunities for exercising skills in individual and team performance against
other schools.
21
Mentoring Scheme
The DLD Mentoring Scheme was started in 2011-12. It proved very successful in helping
students gain valuable experience in leadership, responsibility, motivation and communication.
Who is responsible?
The scheme is supervised by the Mentoring Coordinators and supported by senior members of staff.
What does it involve?
Designated AS and A2 students act as mentors for the younger students in need of extra support, whether for
academic / language purposes or for social inclusion.
Examples of Mentors’ comments on the benefits of mentoring:
-
-
-
-
-
‘Seeing progress in the mentee’s understanding of particular topics’
‘Having fun and good conversation’
‘Improving my interpersonal skills’
‘An enjoyable experience where you don’t just help others, but you can also learn a few
more things yourself.’
‘It is a good scheme that helps you to be patient, and learn and understand more about people.’
- ‘Great on CV and university applications’
Coordinator: Theo Tsantas ([email protected])

PHSE Programme/
Personal Tutor Period
Every Monday all students meet their Personal Tutor in a timetabled session. This is a
weekly opportunity to discuss their attendance, academic progress and overall welfare,
and to receive practical advice on study and exam revision skills, including learning styles,
effective note-taking, summarising, effective CV writing and interview skills. In addition,
a number of PHSE lectures also take place during these periods and throughout the year.
These lectures are part of our effort to help our students meet the targets set by the Department for
Education’s Every Child Matters agenda, which are: be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive
contribution, achieve economic wellbeing. This year topics covered have included: the abuse of cannabis,
stress and depression, smoking, alcohol and eating disorders.

Educational Trips/Visits
At DLD we fully endorse the Department for Education’s Learning Outside the Classroom
manifesto. The provision of our curriculum is regularly supported by daily, after-school
or residential educational trips or visits organised by subject tutors. Our strategic
location in central London means that students benefit from easy access to a great
number of galleries, museums and theatres. Our College has a designated Educational
Visit Coordinator (EVC), who ensures that trips abide by the current Health and Safety
regulatory requirements.

University and Careers Advice
UCAS application preparation
The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service is the primary means by which students can apply to study
in UK higher education. DLD is proud to have an extremely high entry rate to universities each year, placing
students at prestigious institutions in an incredibly wide range of disciplines. This is proof that students and
academic endorsements from DLD are unanimously respected and are greeted with high expectations. Our
Personal Tutor system ensures that applicants are known well by their referees, who are able to guide them
in making appropriate choices of course and institution. Personal Tutors and Subject Tutors offer advice on
how students can enhance their academic and extra-curricular profiles; this is necessary in order to compose a
unique and impressive Personal Statement. Throughout the academic year we provide a series of presentations
which guide students through the process of completing the online form, and prepare them for the possibility
of academic interviews by Admissions Tutors. In addition, presentations are provided on broader themes to
introduce students to the wider cultural and historical knowledge that will be expected of them at university.
Coordinator: Moira Matthews ([email protected])
Russell Group and Oxbridge applicants
The Russell Group is a consortium of the UK’s most powerful research universities, among the most prestigious
and respected in the world. A large proportion of DLD students secure places in the Russell Group (which
includes Oxford and Cambridge) each academic year. We have many students who have attended Oxbridge
Colleges recently, including Isobel Ransome at Pembroke, Oxford reading Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies;
Grace Wai at St Hugh’s, Oxford reading Information Engineering; Napper Tandy at Peterhouse, Cambridge
reading English; Mizuho Hashimoto at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge reading Human, Social and Political
Sciences; Charlotte Neve reading English at New College, Oxford; Hyeonjun Lim reading Mathematics
at Exeter College, Oxford; and Yiqin Wang, reading Mathematics at University College, Oxford. We offer
presentations that provide university-level scholarships by current staff and visitors to high-achieving students
with aspirations to study particular academic disciplines. In addition, we provide a tailored schedule of practice
sessions in the Autumn term to prepare applicants for the challenging admissions interviews which take place
in December and the Spring term.
Coordinator: Moira Matthews ([email protected])
Medical, Veterinary and Dental School Applicants
DLD has a long history of helping students to achieve their ambition of successfully applying for these
demanding courses. Various enrichment activities are provided for students who wish to pursue a career as a
Doctor, Vet or Dentist:
-

In September we host DLD’s annual Getting into Medicine School event, with visiting speakers who are
Admissions Tutors at medical schools, plus talks on medical ethics and admissions tests.
Medsoc is a free, weekly programme, designed to prepare students for all aspects of their application,
including voluntary work and then UKCAT / BMAT admissions test.
Personal advice on writing the UCAS personal statement is also provided, together with interview
advice and practice.
The coordinator is a member of the medical interview panel at UCL.

Art College Applicants
At DLD we are extremely experienced in co-ordinating the applications of aspiring
students to a broad variety of specialist Arts based Foundation and Degree Courses
at various prestigious local, regional and international Art schools, colleges, and
universities. Applicants receive specialised UCAS guidance and are given expert
assistance in developing strong portfolios, personal statements, and interview skills.
Art students have the option to add extra-curricular Art classes to their timetable to
improve their portfolios. We have a 100% record in placing international and local
students in major London, provincial and international Art courses since 2001, and DLD
Art students regularly win awards in student art competitions, including the ISA Regional
and National Art Competitions. In recent years DLD Art students have gone on to the
following destinations: Goldsmiths, the University of the Arts, London (Chelsea, Central
St Martin’s, Wimbledon, Camberwell, LCF & LCC), City & Guilds, Kingston, Middlesex,
Ravensbourne, Brighton, Bournemouth, Leeds, Edinburgh, and Parsons in New York and
Paris. Several DLD Art alumni are at present studying on MA Degrees at Chelsea and the
Royal College of Art.
Coordinator: Jonathan Parkhouse ([email protected])
A Level and BTEC Fair for GCSE Students
During the Spring Term we hold an A level Fair to introduce our Year 11 students to the
wide range of A level and BTEC subjects available at DLD. Our Tutors, expert in their own
subjects and often A- level examiners in their own right, know their students well and
are able to offer sound advice on the choice of appropriate Sixth Form courses. Parents
and students are warmly invited to discuss the proposed programme of study with the
Director of Studies for GCSE and with the Vice-Principals. Careful planning, taking into
account the academic strengths of our students and their career aspirations, underpins
their success in the Sixth Form.
UCAS Workshops for Students
We take the university application process very seriously at DLD. During the Spring Term
we give presentations explaining the system to the Year 12 students and encourage them
to begin their own research into possible university destinations and courses. Once the
all-important AS examination period is over, we ensure that all students register with
UCAS and begin work on their applications. An outside speaker, which this year will be
from King’s College London, is invited into college to offer advice on how to impress
university admissions officers with a well-researched application and a well-crafted
personal statement. In-house workshops offer the opportunity for students to work on
their statements, supported by the UCAS Coordinator, their Directors of Studies and
Personal Tutors. Students are encouraged to attend Higher Education Fairs and
open days.
UCAS Advice for Parents and Guardians
We understand that parents are keen that their son or daughter should choose a
university and course wisely. In March we hold an evening for parents and guardians of
Year 12 students to provide an inside track on the DLD university application process and
to give them a chance to meet the UCAS Coordinator and the Directors of Studies who
will be guiding the students in their applications. We recognise that parents often wish
to be involved in the decision-making and would like to support their son or daughter
in writing the application. We are happy to advise and talk to parents at any stage of the
process. For more information please contact the UCAS Coordinator at DLD.

Other College Events
Student Induction
This year it will take place between the 8th and 9th of September. The induction aims to introduce our
new students to all aspects of life at DLD and promote a sense of community prior to the beginning of the
academic year. It includes a variety of informative sessions, such as talks on personal and fire safety and
presentation of our Enrichment Programme and Co-Curricular activities. The induction concludes with a whole
College Assembly.
New Parents’ Social Event
It takes place towards the end of September. It is an opportunity for the parents of new students to come to
the College, meet tutors informally and find out more about how the College operates, whilst enjoying some
wine, grapes and cheese!
Winter Concert
The Winter Concert takes place every year in December and it seems to get better and better. We often
have themes (last year was ‘Caring and Being Cared For’,) with music and poetry carefully selected to blend
seamlessly into each another. The music is usually highly eclectic and ranges from folk song to serious classical
fayre. There are usually a few R&B numbers, and our ukulele group always have a major role to play.
Charity events
At DLD we are committed to giving back to the community. Every year, events are organised to support
charities. This year generous students and parents of DLD College London have raised £3,270.00 for our two
chosen charities The John van Geest Cancer Centre and Centrepoint Shelter.
The John van Geest Cancer Centre is a unique purpose-built scientific facility in the East Midlands. Their aim
is to save lives and speed recovery by improving the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Every single penny
donated is spent on cancer research.
Centrepoint gives homeless young people a chance to turn their lives around, build firm foundations, and
prepare for a future where they realise their potential. They support over 8,400 young people a year in London
and the North East.
Students have been inspired to help these two charities and came up with some interesting fundraising events
throughout the year, including a Christmas Jumper event, Pizza Party, Halloween Fancy Dress,Valentines Candy
Gram and a Charity Football Tournament!
Search for a DLD Star
This is a talent competition, which takes place during the first term. It is open to all students (and staff) and can
include any type of performance style. The judging panel is made up of students, and prizes are awarded every
year. The winner is invited to star in the winter concert.

Summer Prom 2015
The Fourth Annual DLD College London Summer Prom was held at Fulham Palace in London on Friday 8th
May. Students took to the red carpet to celebrate the end of their academic year with a stunning Hollywood
glamour themed prom.
The event, jointly hosted by the Marylebone and Belgravia campuses at the spectacular Fulham Palace, saw
guests greeted with a colourful cocktail and canapé reception in the courtyard.
Guests posed for photographs with Marilyn Monroe who mingled and conversed with the 120 students
who attended.
Stepping off the red carpet they then enjoyed a two course meal in a grand marquee in the
Chaplains Gardens.
After the exquisite banquet, students were able to dance the night away in the Great Hall where a DJ and
Disco were in place with an illuminated dance floor and ceiling lights.
There was a Hollywood Glamour photo booth which was equipped with fun props and had unlimited
photographs for the students to take away with them.
The staff and students were then treated to a decadent dessert. There was a huge Belgian chocolate fountain
on a stunning lit table armed with its own operating chef and endless snacks to dip such as fudge, profiteroles,
strawberries, brownies, nougat and much more.
Marilyn arrived dressed in her iconic white dress before changing into an incredible gold, floor length gown to
announce the prom Kings and Queens.
The two sets of prom Kings and Queens were all presented with rosettes from Marilyn in the Grand Hall and
received cheers from their fellow students. A huge confetti gun was set off when the pairs were crowned
cascading gold and silver glitter everywhere whilst “Time of my Life” played in the background.
End-of-Year Award Ceremony
Tutors, students and their parents celebrated the end of yet another successful academic year and
congratulated the students for their achievements. The event, with the entertainment it provides, is also
another opportunity to showcase DLD’s outstanding talent in Music and Drama.
End of Year Art, Photography and Graphics Exhibition
This annual event takes place at the end of each academic year and features a selection of current GCSE, GCE
and Foundation Art, Graphics and Photography students’ work. It is an opportunity for students, tutors, parents
and friends to admire and celebrate the diversity, innovation and creativity of art produced at DLD over the
course of the academic year.
