Conejo Orchid Society Vol. 36, No. 9 www.conejoorchidsociety.org September, 2016 The President’s Message, From Kathy Boals Hello Fellow Orchid Lovers! I am writing this on Monday, August 22, the day after our wonderful CalOrchid picnic. What a great turnout we had and I think everyone had a good time. There was plenty of good food and camaraderie, great greenhouse tours and loads of lovely plants. Cal-Orchid Greenhouse tour Video Thanks to all who contributed food (even though they didn’t have to!): Marion McWilliams’ wonderful potato salad, Alice Smith’s delicious rice salad and Vicky Price’s yummy green salad with an assortment of dressings. James and Lauris contributed the wonderful guacamole, beans and salsas with chips. I think there would have been a riot if we didn’t get our annual Cal-Orchid guacamole! Thanks also to all who worked hard to make everything come together: Bill, Chyoko, Vicky and of course my husband Brian for doing the BBQ - hope I haven’t forgotten anyone! Cal-Orchid Picnic Video Naturally, biggest thanks go to James and Lauris Rose for hosting our event on their only day off ! Something we need to address before our next meeting on Sept. 12: Nomination of new officers and board members for 2017. It takes a group of people to make your Society run! We have a lot of fun and do a little work, too. If you think you’d like to get your feet wet by joining our Board as perhaps a Director at Large or some other “smaller” job, don’t hesitate! Of course, we welcome your participation at any level and if you’d like to become an officer, so much the better! We all work together and you’ll have lots of help. Please consider taking partnew ideas and perspectives are what keeps up moving forward. See you at the meeting! September Speaker – Harry Phillips – ‘The Perception & Reality Of Growing Orchids’ Our speaker for September is Harry Phillips, now retired from Andy’s Orchids (www.andysorchids.com). In addition to a great talk, and fantastic raffle table, Harry will be bringing plants for sale from Andy’s Orchids. Harry Phillips was born in San Diego, California on July 9, 1953. His Father taught him to appreciate plants at an early age. In January of 1963 Harry’s brother Andy (of Andy’s Orchids fame) was born, and six years later is when it all started. They were both exposed to exotic plants and flowers at an early age, but when Andy became interested and latter obsessed with orchids, Harry somehow resisted becoming involved with them for as long as he could. He assisted Andy in his passion by building his first two green houses, and Andy would reward him with a hybrid that was in bloom, tell him to bring it back when it goes out of bloom, and exchange it for one in bloom. Well this would only last about a year until he decided that he wanted to keep one and get it to re-bloom, the beginning of the end. In 1986 Harry, with his soon to be wife Leslie moved with Andy and his orchid collection to Encinitas, California. Being constantly exposed to all of Andy’s orchids was beginning to have an effect on Harry. Shortly after, Andy left for four months to Costa Rica, and placed Harry in charge of the collection. When Andy returned he found that Harry had not killed too many plants and managed to become even more addicted. Andy now, feeling more confident about leaving his orchid collection under Harry’s care, began to plan a cycling trip through South America which ended up lasting two years. After that it was all over for Harry, he was completely addicted to orchids. Harry assisted Andy part time, with the beginnings of Andy’s Orchids, for 10 years while holding a fulltime job to pay the mortgage, going full time about 15 years ago. His passion in orchids are in the Genera Sobralia and Elleanthus, but you ask him at any particular time of the year which is his favorite orchid, and it will most likely be the one or ones in bloom at that time. He has traveled in Brazil, Dominica, Fiji, Mexico and Ecuador viewing orchids in the wild. Harry noticed while observing orchids that what he perceived the orchids wanted was not always the reality of what they needed. He would like to share with you his experiences with the perceptions verses the realities of growing orchids. Orchid Extravaganza Coming To The Huntington October 19-23! COS Membership Notes by Alice Smith, Membership Chair I want to keep all of you, our wonderful COS members, up to date about our membership count which is currently at 85. We signed up 20 new members as a direct result of the well-run COS Library Sale held in June. The volunteers who made a “pitch” for membership when orchid customers were paying for their purchases deserve a big thank you. It was a great effort on everyone’s part with very tangible results. The 2016 Membership drive started slowly (in January 2016) because of my inexperience with COS membership protocol as well as some knee replacement problems. Getting things rolling earlier for our 2017 Membership Drive is a high priority. If any of our current members would like to renew their membership for 2017, I would be more than happy to accept applications starting now. Please print the application on the second to last page and send it to me (with your $20 check, of course). Also, tell your friends, and neighbors, we are offering a great deal for new members only: Any new member who joins COS for the remaining months of 2016 will also automatically becomes a 2017 member. What a deal!!! So, if you have friends or neighbors (or even a nice clerk at a store) who may be interested in COS, please pass this offer on to them. Starting September 2, I will be on vacation and will not returning until the day after our next COS meeting September 12. My friend, Susan Dubin, will be the Membership Chairperson for the day. I know you will be nice to her! You are an outstanding group. Thank you all for your terrific support. Sincerely, Those Crazy Orchid Name Tag Abbreviations by Bill Gunning Several of our members have asked the question, what do those abbreviations on the orchid name tags represent? I recall having the same question when I was starting to expand my collection. The abbreviations at the beginning of each name represent the genus of the particular plant. So what is a genus? Think Homo sapiens (that being us). We are members of the genus “Homo” and specifically the species “sapiens”. There are other (thankfully extinct) species in the genus Homo, including, Homo erectus, Homo habilis, and Homo neanderthalensis (there might still be a few of these around). Back to orchids. The abbreviation for the orchid genus Laelia is “L.”; “Bc.” refers to a Brassavola Cattleya hybrid. The rest of the name is either the species or the name of the hybrid cross. It can get more complicated and there are very specific naming conventions, but understanding the genus provides valuable information. Knowing the genus will give you an idea of the type of flower you might expect, but more important, will help you understand the culture requirements. You can use this information to research additional culture information on the internet and will help guide you to plants that will thrive in your growing environment. For example, if you find a plant labeled “L. anceps”, you find that this is a Laelia species from Mexico that blooms in the fall and is temperature tolerant, meaning it can stand a wide range of temperatures, from freezing to 100F. Similarly, a hybrid with L. anceps in its makeup, such as Lc. (Laeliocattleya) Interceps (a cross between Laelia anceps and Cattleya intermedia), will tend to be temperature tolerant, more likely to bloom earlier in the year, and will likely have a larger, not as “star shaped” a flower as a Laelia anceps. Laelia species from Brazil (there are several) have different growing requirements and plant characteristics, all of which you can find using the internet. The table below lists the most common genus abbreviations that you will find on a tag. It also includes the abbreviations that refer to AOS awards. There are hundreds more, but this will give you a good start. A PDF file of this table, plus another extremely extensive one listing all current abbreviations (Orchid Genera Abbreviations Sorted by Name), are being provided by e-mail. These files will also be posted on our society web site www.conejoorchidsociety.org. An alternative is to do a simple internet search that includes the abbreviation and the word “orchid”, such as “Slc. orchid”. Additional discussion about mining the internet for useful orchid information will be covered in a later article. Table Of Abbreviations AOS AM Ascda. B. Bc. Blc. Bllra. Brs. Brsdm. (BS) Bulb. C. Please follow the link below and request to join: http://www.facebook.com/groups/ AffiliatedSocietiesOfTheAOS/ This forum will remain as a place to share your successes, challenges and best practices with other orchid societies, and we hope that participating clubs will find new ideas for improving membership recruitment, retention and participation. The AOS volunteers will also post information and helpful links, and the AOS will use this bridge to maintain contact with you and your society. Food For Thought! Contributed by ~ Chad Brinkerhuff AOS Student Judge, Florida North Central Judging Center With show season starting just around the corner. I am sure we are all very excited to be planning our shows. As a new student judge it is always a pleasure to work with societies and their shows. I am always amazed at the level of support and enthusiasm of every society, and the hours of work in preparation by the clerks that join in the judging teams. I know the judges really appreciate the volunteers taking the time to make sure we are well fed, as at some shows the judging can be a very long process, and for myself if I don’t have something to eat my brain wants to shut down. On that note, I personally have dietary restrictions as I am sure there are other judges that do as well, along with volunteers and vendors. I know there are many that do not eat pork specifically, some are diabetic, gluten intolerant and even vegetarian. How much thought, do you as a society make to have a broad range of options? I know many societies just take what they can get. Others have food catered in. One suggestion is have your Judging chair ask the judges participating, if there are specific restrictions they need to be aware of. I am in no way suggesting that they chose specific menu items, but food allergies and specific restrictions (i.e.. things they cannot eat), should be considered. You may try to have the membership stick to a specific menu or give them the restrictions and allow them to make dishes that would be appropriate. If catering in food, most caterers will know what menu items that they offer and will help you work with those restrictions. I fortunately am not diabetic yet and I love all the homemade sweets that are brought in. I have had some amazing desserts. But I have noticed that there does seem to be some consideration in the dessert items when there are nuts it is usually marked, sugar free and gluten free options. While I could personally make a meal just from the deserts I am sure that everyone would appreciate any effort to accommodate their individual needs. Looking forward to a great show season and lots of amazing cheat meals. Thank you again for everyone’s support of the show and the Judges involved.
