Large Business Award H2M Architects and
Engineers, Rich Humann, President and CEO. H2M, which
began 82 years ago in 1933, in the middle of the Great
Depression, has grown. It won the Small Business Award in
2009. Recently, the company grew from 220 employees to
over 300 in one-and-a half-years. Rich Humann summarized
the good fortunes succinctly: “We provide a lot of services to a
lot of people in a lot of markets.” Employee empowerment is
a key to H2M’s success. The committees show the company’s
dedication to its employees. It boasts a Young Professionals
Committee, an Employee Engagement Committee, and an
Employee Advisory Committee, which sat in on the company’s
deliberations on health insurance. The award was presented
by Chintu Patel, CEO of Amneal Pharmaceuticals, winner of the
2011 award.
Small Business Award AVZ & Company, P.C.
Bob Quarte, co-managing partner. AVZ stands for Albrecht,
Viggiano, Zureck & Company. A public accounting firm, their
motto is “Personal Service, Trusted Advice.” Bob’s been with
the firm for 35 years. In 1989 AVZ expanded its services to
include wealth management. The company, founded in 1950 by
Sebastian Albrecht, just celebrated its 65th year in business. Mr.
Albrecht died recently at the age of 98. Its first office was over
a hardware store in Farmingville! Bob noted a few changes that
have occurred since 1950. In that year the average price of a
house was $8,400, the average annual income was $3,400,
and a gallon of gas went for 18 cents. Bob stressed that the
firm’s success is anchored in community involvement and
dedication to its employees. The brief video included a montage
of happy employees, each saying one positive word about
Rookie of the Year Award Rigatoni’s Pizza
& Pasta, Kyle Markott, owner of Rigatoni’s, located on
Adams Avenue in the Hauppauge Industrial Park, began just
three years ago. Kyle has been busy providing excellent food
and service to his customers. They make their food fresh every
morning, and donate any leftovers to food pantries. Attention
to detail is a key to success, Kyle noted. Rigatoni’s catering
business has taken off, and is a company mainstay. Christine
Ippolito, principal of Compass Workforce Solutions, and last
year’s Rookie of the Year recipient presented the award.
Not-For-Profit Award Life’s WORC, Janet Koch,
executive director. Life’s WORC began in 1971 as a response
to the scandalous conditions at the Willowbrook State Mental
Hospital. No, “Worc” is not a typo. The organization began with
the name, “Work Organization for Rehabilitating Children.”
Life’s Worc serves people with developmental challenges,
including autism, over 1,500 individuals all over Long Island.
The organization boasts dedicated employees. At a longevity
breakfast held last week, Janet noted that 30 percent of Worc’s
employees have been with the organization for over five years,
and 20 percent have served for over 10 years. Life’s Worc
employs over 1,000 people.
Congratulations to the Recipients!
The event was another example of HIA-LI’s dedication to the
Long Island business community.

An Interview with Janet Koch
CEO of Life’s WORC
About Life’s WORC
The Center provides a full resource of
opportunities for participation in clubs,
programs or social activities which afford
individuals on the autism spectrum, their
families and members of the community
a comfortable venue where feel welcome
to enjoy a full array of social connections.
Our collaborative linkage with a number
of LI School Districts enable us to provide
a continuum of services both in the
school setting and/or the family home
with behavioral supports. Our goal is
to connect with families and assist in
whatever way we can to offer resources
that may enhance their lives and offer
much needed respite.
Life’s WORC is an approved New York
State 501 (c) 3 organization that
supports individuals with developmental
disabilities and autism.
Tell us about how your
organization started?
What was a turning point for
your organization?
As new funding became available in
the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Life’s

and Suffolk counties on Long Island.
Throughout the past 44+ years, we
have successfully developed 40 homes,
supporting 251 people. Additionally, we
began to offer collateral supports and
services to individuals and their families
through Medicaid Service Coordination,
At-Home Supports, Respite/Recreation
and Day Services touching the lives of
some 1,500 hundred people each and
every year.
What is your philosophy at
Life’s WORC?
Our commitment to the needs of this
population is the foundation by which
we have developed the quality and
person-centered approach to meeting the
diverse needs of people with a disability.
The ever-changing landscape in funding
and resources available to individuals
and their families requires voluntary
providers to do more with less. The
transformation in funding continues
to evolve to a managed care system of
supports, yet the needs of individuals
and their families continues to increase.
We look to the future and see new

The agency was founded in 1971 by
Vicki Schneps, the mother of a child
born with severe cognitive and physical
disabilities, who like other parents
during this time had no community
based options available for her child’s
needed supports or services. Given the
paucity of services, she placed her child
at one of the State institutions. The
Willowbrook State Institution, where
her daughter now resided, became
a flash point when Geraldo Rivera, a
news reporter uncovered the deplorable
conditions. Vicki and Geraldo worked
together and advocated for the rights
of individuals and families at all levels
of the state, participating in a law suit
which ultimately mandated that NY
State create alternative community
based services to support people with
developmental disabilities. In fact, Life’s
WORC “group home” located in the Little
Neck community of Queens was the first
residence located in the borough and was
named the Geraldo Rivera Residence,
for his advocacy and financial support of
this home, which allowed eight children
to move out of Willowbrook into a
home of their own. Since that time, a
comprehensive system was created in
New York State to provide a full spectrum
of community based services and supports
which afford individuals the opportunities
to live a full and productive lives with the
same choices and options as any other
member of the community at large.
The Magic of the Party Season

“Great memories are created, they rarely just happen”
Tis soon the season where memories are created, where
family and friends celebrate, commiserate and share stories
of beautiful times gone by, and those yet to come.
Don’t Blink! If you do you, you might miss the magic of
the holiday season…
It’s kick off time and time to plan those final touches to your
holiday plans…
OK, how do we plan memorable holiday or other milestone
happenings?
The key word is Plan! So where do we begin… How do we
create a plan for success…
What are the base elements of successful planning…
Is it just to be Food, Music & some Décor…
What are some of the proven paths to success?
A great place to begin is with the “5 W’s”. Let’s explore
them, and the questions they raise.
1. Why? Why have we decided to host this gathering?
Do you have realistic goals that reach beyond “Let’s Have
Fun”? A fair question is, have you considered all the options
and made the best decisions to accomplish all your holiday
goals.
Will your invited guests enjoy a memorable experience,
and be encouraged to become closer to you, and to your
company…
2. What? What do you hope to accomplish? What are your
event goals?
Will a Wine, Cheese and Nibble gathering, with a touch of
music really be enough? Is this all you really want for your
holiday gathering? If it’s for a select group and you decide
to forgo any enhancements, will that really suffice?
It might be valuable for you to consider how your gathering
will be compared to other events that your guests will
attend. This might cause you to rethink hosting an event at all…
Will entertainment be designed with your goals in mind? Have
you considered what adding entertainment will add to your theme?
What effect will some of the following ideas add?
Music: (Band, Disc Jockey, Karaoke) Will they be instructed to
maintain very reasonable sound levels?
Magic: A Close-Up Magician performing at table side
An Artist: creating Caricatures with your theme as part of the
design, or an Event Wall of Fame
Fortune Tellers: Providing a whimsical glance at the past, present
and the magic of tomorrow
Specialty Performers… A Dinner Show… Surprise Celebrities…
Will your plan’s design speak to your goals both social and
esoteric… Will you create a lasting impression, that will be
remembered and talked about as the best of all their holiday
experiences
3. When? When, might be one of the most important decisions in
planning and creating your event.
Some things to consider include…
Will you choose to host your event early in the holiday season, at
the height of the season, or on a welcome post season date…
Will the date be appropriate to the season, convenient to attend
after work, or on a weekend?
Will your date selection conflict with other events?
Will the time and date allow your invited guests to attend and
enjoy all that you have planned without having to cut their visit
short.
The more creative and elaborate your event design, the more time
that must be allowed for installation, and for your guests to
appreciate your celebration.
Will you choose to include an event marketing experience as a
part of your well planned and memorable holiday celebration…
4. Who? Who will be invited?
A great deal of thought needs to be employed here. Your event
goals should guide your invitation decisions.
Experience has taught us that when hosting a relaxed, employee
family event, it will generally result in improved team morale and
increased productivity.
Choosing to create a separate, perhaps a more formal event for
business associates and key employees might be a more productive
decision.
If budget allows, hosting the two separate events may well prove
to be a better choice than just one bigger one.
There are no right & wrong decisions here. Your business
environment, goals and budget will help to guide reaching the best
decision.
5. Where? Where should you host the event?
Careful thought in selecting the venue large enough to host your
celebration’s goals and design. Your selection must be one that
will serve to enhance your event goals, themology, décor; it must
be one that will allow your creative design to shine.
You should also consider…
Will the location and time be convenient to all those invited…
Will a hotel, catering hall or other venue be cooperative. Will
they give you enough time to set up and have your guests enjoy a
leasure and memorable visit…
Will hosting a creative event at your home office or wharehouse
be an interesting and wise choice… A properly designed use of
your facility could really be an “Event Marketing Coo”
6. The Will I did say 5W’s, but # 6 really makes the 1st 5 work!
We have used the word Will very often.
Its use was designed to open the door to your imagination; it begs
the questions…
Do you have the Will to succeed? Will your event speak to your
goals and dreams? Will you select the right time?
Will your selected venue add to the success of your event?
Will you have the time, resources and talented team to make
your plan work? Having a great Holiday Happening begins with
an all-important 1st step; consider the “5 W’s ”
Assemble your event team, share your goals [give them the
financial paramaters] and ask for their reaction to your planned
concept. Make certain that they have the time, the temperance &
the abilities needed to really accomplish the task at hand, believe
in your goals, and still have time to accomplish their regular
business tasks for your company.
If you need to invite a professional event design and production
group to make it happen… this might be far more efficient and
effective than disrupting some or many of your business teams.
I have often shared the thought, “Nobody plans to fail, but woe is
to those that fail to plan”!
It’s never too early to take that first step; it’s never too late to
make it right.

H
ave you ever thought about how
your choices impact your
performance and more importantly
your happiness? Why do you do what
you do for a living? Why are you friends
with certain people in your life?
More importantly, why do you do things
that make you unhappy? You’re on this
Earth 80 years, if you’re lucky, and you
spend many of those years going to a job
you either hate or really suck at. Answer:
You do certain things because you’re
“supposed to” do them.
Think about a personal or professional
relationship you continue on with
because you don’t want to let others
down.
The reality is most people go through
their lives doing what doesn’t make
them happy only to figure it out when
it’s too late.
Now, I’m not talking about being selfish.
There’s a difference in being happy and
selfishly living your life. When you’re
on a plane, there’s also a reason you’re
instructed to put your oxygen mask on
first, before assisting others around you.
Because to serve others – your spouse,
your children, your co-workers, your
customers… etc., you must first start by
first taking care of yourself – creating
happiness within yourself, first.
Today is your lucky day! You and I are
going to get raw and real. It’s time to
stop lying to yourself and ownership of
your life. Imagine a life free from the
fear that holds you back. You deserve
happiness. Chase what’s important to
you and not others.
Your journey, both personally and
professionally starts by getting to the
root of what makes you love waking up
each morning.
Stop Trying to Make Others Happy
at Your Expense.
So many people in my life told me I
wouldn’t be successful. I proved them
wrong, but for years, I was chasing the
wrong thing. I was only trying to
“prove” my worth to others and
because of this, I wasn’t truly happy.
I am not suggesting you should be rude
or say hurtful things. Instead, ask
yourself different questions. “When I
do this, will it make me happy… even
if I don’t succeed?”
Define What Makes YOU Happy.
Sometimes we really don’t even know
we’re unhappy. If you’re like me you
just get into the routine of life and work
then assume “that’s just the way things
are”.
I don’t want anyone to wake up and
realize they just flushed 30 years down
the drain -- potential wasted because
they didn’t define what their personal
happiness even looks like.
What I found helpful was to reverse
engineer what’s NOT going to make me
happy and circle back to my goal.
Coming up with a set of rules of things
to avoid is more important than a dream
to find happiness. Instead of saying,
“When things change, I’ll be happy”
begin with, “When I am happy things
will change.”
This isn’t supposed to be one of those
feel good articles about how life is
awesome. Look around. Life is hard!
It’s easy to find all the excuses that
prevent you changing your mindset.
But the good news is you have the
choice.
Today is my day to face my fears and
stop chasing unhappiness. I am
committed to creating my happiness
starting now. Want to join me?
The two common fears I see in business
professionals are “What if I am not good
enough?” and “What if I fail?” When
this negative self-talk occurs, it really
goes back to our need of acceptance

2. Recognize individuals who commit to team goals.
Legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince
Lombardi, is considered by many to be one of the most
successful coaches in football history. He said the power of
teamwork went far beyond the football field.
“Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what
makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a
civilization work,” Lombardi said.
If there was a Super Bowl for workplace team performance, would your team be in it to win it—or would they
miss the playoffs? While individual achievement is
important, teamwork is critical to a company’s success.
3. Show your own commitment to your team.
According to five-time league MVP and Denver Broncos
quarterback Peyton Manning, you can’t expect your team
to push for success if you are not there for them.
So, how do you get your workers to pull together as a
team? Take some tips from these professional football
coaches and players who have seen tremendous success
on the field.
“Being there every week for my teammates is really
important to me,” Manning said. “It's about accountability.”
1. Maximize your team’s potential.
Tony Dungy, NBC analyst and former coach of the
Indianapolis Colts, credits this seven-point formula for
his team’s success:
4. Don’t let negative people sour the team.
Terry Bradshaw won four Super Bowl titles as the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and believes that attitude
plays an important role in team success.
“Bad attitudes will ruin your team,” Bradshaw said.
“Concentrate on the factors you have control over:
persistence, self-discipline, confidence. Far more failures
are due to lack of will than lack of ability.”
• Engage
• Educate
• Equip
• Encourage
• Empower
• Energize
• Elevate
“Those are the methods for maximizing the potential of
any individual, team, organization or institution for
ultimate success and significance,” Dungy said.
5. Let established team members be role models for
success.
Merlin Olsen, a former defensive tackle with the Los
Angeles Rams, was selected to the Pro Bowl a record 14
straight times. He placed a high value on both experience
and commitment.
“The winning team has a dedication. It will have a
core of veteran players who set the standards,” Olsen
said. “They will not accept defeat.”
A team that does not accept defeat will keep pushing
forward and overcome obstacles that might defeat a
less committed group.
6. Finally, remember the power of hard work.
Walter Payton, former running back for the Chicago
Bears, is remembered as one of the hardest working
and best running backs in NFL history. In his
autobiography, Payton described what he thought
made someone a winner.
“A winner is somebody who has given his best effort,
who has tried the hardest they possibly can, who has
utilized every ounce of energy and strength within
them to accomplish something. It doesn't mean that
they accomplished it or failed, it means that they've
given it their best.”
Strong Teams Also Mean Better Hires
In the NFL, the team that finishes last gets the first
draft pick. But that’s not so in the workplace.
Creating a “Super Bowl” quality team fuels company
success, and is more likely to attract the strongest job
candidates your company needs to succeed.

Why Marketing? Consider Your Prospect’s Dilemma

This column is for marketing skeptics. It explains
why “connecting with customers/clients” in subtle
ways is so beneficial and suggests steps you can
take now to improve new customer acquisition.
Before I get to into the changes you can make
now, I want to share two quick thoughts on how a
non-believer can “get religion” about marketing.
Ask around. If you have been reluctant to invest,
please talk with someone you trust who seems to
be achieving success with marketing. I won’t try
to convince you myself, because I sell marketing
services.
Consider the consumer’s dilemma. Why should
a prospect choose your business over a similar
looking competitor? It’s their personal decision.
You can’t control prospects’ decisions, but you
can make your business extremely competitive
with a few well-calculated marketing moves.
1. Get expert help. There are a lot of different
skills involved in marketing: website development,
application development, graphic design and copywriting, to name a few. A full-service marketing
agency combines top-level strategic planning with
the necessary technological and creative skills.
2. Lead with a strong message. Develop a solid
message about how customers or clients will benefit
by choosing you. Make prospects say to themselves,
“That’s exactly what I want.” Once you have crystallized the message, put it to work everywhere: in a
snappy tagline, and in a succinct paragraph on the
website, in brochures, in online business directories,
etc. Teach the message to everyone in the company,
so they can say to anyone they meet, “You know the
best reason to go with us?” and then share your
simple message.
3. Look sharp. Is there any direct connection
between great graphic design and great business
performance? No there is not, but consumers and
clients are trained, through a lifetime of exposure to
sophisticated marketing, to equate professional
appearance with top performance. When your
company pays attention to details like color scheme,
design and typography, you look sharp, and prospects
make the inferences that you want them to. Put your
faith in professional graphic designers, because DIY
design never measures up to expert work.
makes it by far your most important customer
recruitment tool. A strong home page marries
the crisp message and appealing aesthetics
discussed above with a deft presentation of
your services. The visitor learns within a few
seconds that (a) you know what you're doing,
and (b) you know how to take care of people
like them. As with No. 2 and No. 3, this is the
unique expertise that marketing specialists
have.
5. Choose the Right Channels. A full-service agency can help you maximize ROI by
directing you to the marketing tools and
media buys that best suit your particular
needs. For some companies, it's direct mail.
For others, pay-per-click advertising. newsletters, broadcast advertising, etc. It depends on
who and where your prospects are.

5 Pitfalls to Avoid When Planning for a Disaster
By Kyriakos Kaimis
Director of Technology
Custom Computer Specialists
70 Suffolk Court
Hauppauge, NY 11788
(631) 864-6699

We’ve all heard the stories of businesses
that were so severely damaged during a
disaster that they were left with no choice
but to shut their doors. The after effects of
a disaster - lost data, damaged technology
- can destroy your business, but with a
proper disaster recovery plan in place all
of this can be avoided.
Simply stated, a disaster recovery plan is
a documented process or set of procedures
to recover and protect your IT infrastructure in the event of a disaster. While that
sounds simple enough, often organizations overlook potential pitfalls that can
result in costly losses.
Pitfall #1: Thinking you can purchase a
one-size-fits-all recovery package. In
some situations a one-size-fits-all strategy
will work just fine, but for disaster recovery planning, a custom tailored plan
designed for your specific and unique
business needs is necessary. Doing your due
diligence on your vendor of choice goes hand in
hand with this point. A vendor with high availability does not equate to having a disaster
recovery plan. A well-meaning vendor who has
promised to be available when disaster strikes
should not take the place of having an actual
disaster recovery plan for your organization.
Pitfall #2: Trying to back up everything. Anywhere from 40-70% of your data is archivalimportant, but static data should be moved to an
archive platform. For most organizations approximately only 30% of your data requires frequent
backup. When preparing for data backup, your
organization should also take note of where
important data is being stored. In today’s world,
critical data can exist in branch offices, desktops,
laptops, tablets and even smartphones. Simply
backing up end user’s computers is no longer
enough to ensure critical data is backed up.
Pitfall #3: Not classifying your data according to
your priority of restore. Managing your data
ahead of a disaster makes for quicker, more
efficient recovery times, which means less down
time for your organization. If you work in a 24 x
7 industry, often times any downtime at all is not
even an option. Fortifying your WAN connections, ensuring they are properly sized, configured and performing at peak efficiency to facili-
tate data restoration will also improve recovery
times.
Pitfall #4: Not investing the money and time
needed to properly plan for a disaster. This
can be the greatest mistake an organization can
make. Disaster can strike your organization at
any time. On Long Island we are especially
prone to experiencing hurricanes and severe
winter storms that can greatly affect your
organization. Loss of power, flooding and
damaged technology can all result in lost data.
Being prepared puts you one step ahead of the
storm so when disaster strikes you can rest
easy knowing your data is protected.
Pitfall #5: Utilizing cloud storage is a great
resource for storing data, however putting too must trust in a cloud provider could prove to
be disastrous. However, if your organization
elects to use a cloud to host your recovery
environment, make sure it actually has everything promised, including a Tier-1 data center.
Whether your business is large or small,
remember that your DR plan must be adaptable and routinely updated. Remember that as
new people, new software, and new offices are
added to your organization, they must also be
added to your DR plan. And above all else,
don’t forget to practice and test your plan.

retirement plans must generally start at age 70½.) But
sometimes it may make more sense to take taxable
distributions from retirement plans in the early years of
retirement while deferring the start of Social Security
retirement benefits
Some basics
October 2015 Hauppauge Reporter Page 20
Up to 50% of your Social Security benefits are taxable if
your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) plus
one-half of your Social Security benefits falls within the
following ranges: $32,000 to $44,000 for married filing
jointly; and $25,000 to $34,000 for single, head of
household, or married filing separately (if you've lived
apart all year). Up to 85% of your Social Security benefits
are taxable if your MAGI plus one-half of your Social
Security benefits exceeds those ranges or if you are
married filing separately and lived with your spouse at
any time during the year. For this purpose, MAGI means
adjusted gross income increased by certain items, such as
tax-exempt interest, that are otherwise excluded or
deducted from your income for regular income tax
purposes.
Social Security retirement benefits are reduced if started
prior to your full retirement age (FRA) and increased if
started after your FRA (up to age 70). FRA ranges from
66 to 67, depending on your year of birth.
Distributions from non-Roth IRAs and qualified
retirement plans are generally fully taxable unless
nondeductible contributions have been made.
Accelerate income, defer Social
Security
It can sometimes make sense to delay the start of Social
Security benefits to a later age (up to age 70) and take
taxable withdrawals from retirement accounts in the
early years of retirement to make up for the delayed
Social Security benefits.
If you delay the start of Social Security benefits, your
monthly benefits will be higher. And because you've
taken taxable distributions from your retirement plans in
the early years of retirement, it's possible that your
required minimum distributions will be smaller in the
later years of retirement when you're also receiving
more income from Social Security. And smaller taxable
withdrawals will result in a lower MAGI, which could
mean the amount of Social Security benefits subject to
federal income tax is reduced.
Whether this strategy works to your advantage depends
on a number of factors, including your income level, the
size of the taxable withdrawals from your retirement
savings plans, and how many years you ultimately
receive Social Security retirement benefits.
Example
Mary, a single individual, wants to retire at age 62. She
can receive Social Security retirement benefits of
$18,000 per year starting at age 62 or $31,680 per year
starting at age 70 (before cost-of-living adjustments). She
has traditional IRA assets of $300,000 that will be fully
taxable when distributed. She has other income that is
taxable (disregarding Social Security benefits and the
IRA) of $27,000 per year. Assume she can earn a 6%
annual rate of return on her investments (compounded
monthly) and that Social Security benefits receive annual
2.4% cost-of-living increases. Assume tax is calculated
using the 2015 tax rates and brackets, personal exemption,
and standard deduction.
Option 1. One option is for Mary to start taking Social
Security benefits of $18,000 per year at age 62 and take
monthly distributions from the IRA that total about
$21,852 annually.
Option 2. Alternatively, Mary could delay Social Security
benefits to age 70, when her benefits would start at
$38,299 per year after cost-of-living increases. To make
up for the Social Security benefits she's not receiving from
ages 62 to 69, during each of those years she withdraws
about $40,769 to $44,094 from the traditional IRA--an
amount approximately equal to the lost Social Security
benefits plus the amount that would have been withdrawn
from the traditional IRA under the age 62 scenario (plus a
little extra to make the after-tax incomes under the two
scenarios closer for those years). When Social Security
retirement benefits start at age 70, she reduces monthly
distributions from the IRA to about $4,348 annually.
Mary's after-tax income in each scenario is approximately
the same during the first 8 years. Starting at age 70,
however, Mary's after-tax income is higher in the second
scenario, and the total cumulative benefit increases
significantly with the total number of years Social
Security benefits are received.*

Would your business survive the lost opportunity major fines, penalties and major legal
fees when the Department of Labor comes knocking?
240 Million $$$ in “unpaid” wages was recovered in fiscal year 2014 by the Federal Department of Labor.
$1.4 Million in back wages and damages were recovered in April of 2015 by the Federal DOL for 300 employees in Long Island
city included misclassified or 1099 workers.
The biggest changes start with small steps. When it comes to getting onto the road
to better health and wellness, this is especially true.
An effective way to begin a new health routine is by making small changes to
your everyday life. If your goal is to diet, start by cutting back on one or two items
and gradually remove more over time. When incorporating exercise, begin with
simple exercises, such as walking or running for a few minutes a day.
Getting your baseline through diagnostic testing is another effective, and important way to take charge of your health. Our Health & Wellness services can show
you how your health compares to medial norms and average Risks for Disease.
For more information visit www.accuhealthgroup.com
The AccuHealth Group aims to presserve and sustain optimal health for our patients through comprehensive preventative
health and wellness services while compating rising cost of healthcare for employers.
We leveraged our experience managing medical practices and our invaluable relationships with some of the top healthcare
organizations and providers and created a workplace wellness program that includes a unique health physical and services
that help ensure our patients remain on the path to health and wellness.
The integration of our experience, relationships, and services, has afforded us the ability to accomplish our mission of
having a positive impact in reducing the prevalence of chronic illnesses, thereby improving the otherall quality of life for
our patients while helping organizations combat the rising cost of healthcare.
In August of 2015 Governor Cuomo announced the recovery of over 18 Million $$$ in recovered wages in the first 7 months
of 2015 and on pace to beat the $30.2 million recovered in 2014.
Do you know the risk and cost to your business of not having the answers to these
questions?
• Who is an employee vs. 1099? What is a full time equivalent? How many full time employees do we have on staff? Why
is this important?
• Are we prepared to win an unemployment claim or allegation of unlawful harassment/discrimination? Do we know how
to respond? How do we prepare and prevent these issues?
• What if we notified of an audit by the Department of Labor audit or have an employee complaint?
• How do I position my business for growth, additional locations, or increase the value for sale?
• How do I find and retain the “right talent” to grow my business?
• How do I ensure my business runs to our standards on a consistent basis?
• How does my business keep up with the never ending rule changes and what regulation applies to my business? What are
$$$$$ for not being in compliance?
There is good news! Despite the obstacles in the way of business success and the major increase in government regulation,
Compass clients are thriving, growing and creating sustainable businesses during this challenging economy. Compass
clients are more in control of their business operations, experience reduced workplace conflict, and are limiting the risk of
huge fines and penalties from government audits, and/or employee litigation. – Thus, protecting their business profits and
ability to sustain and grow.

Green Printing Practices: How to Make Your Office Environmentally Friendly

What better opportunity to make a difference this
year by reviewing your office’s printing practices in
search of ways to make them more eco-friendly.
Here is a short guide on how to get started and some
simple tips that can have a huge impact.
Assess Your Print Environment
First you must evaluate your copy and printing
environment with a sense of honesty. Resist the urge
to ignore irresponsible business practices because
it’s “what you’ve always done.” And don’t forget to
be thorough! Look closely at all aspects of your print
environment to identify areas in which you can
improve, including:
• Machines – Are your printers, copiers and other
print devices energy-efficient? Do they automatically switch to standby modes during non-peak usage
times? Does your equipment use advanced technology such as LED-based scanning that uses 1/3 the
• Resources – Does your organization use environmentally friendly consumables like recycled paper
or low-melt toner?
• Employee Behavior – Does your business have
print guidelines in place that foster responsible
printing? How much paper do your employees
waste?
This evaluation should help guide you in developing a plan for how to improve your office’s
sustainability. If you need further direction, you
can use tools such as a carbon footprint calculator
(https://www.carbonfund.org/business-calculator)
to help identify areas in which you can improve
your office’s printing practices.
Now that you’ve identified areas that need
improvement, it’s time to address them. Often
times simple changes can have a huge impact.
Check out a few things you can do to help make
your office’s print environment more eco-friendly:
• Replace Outdated Equipment – Replace old
print devices with newer models that meet environmental certifications such as Energy Star. This will
lower your bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
• Consolidate Equipment – Consolidate
stand-alone devices such as printers, copiers, and
fax machines into a single, multifunction unit to
save on space, energy costs and resources.
• Leverage Printer Settings – Take advantage of
your print device’s environmentally conscious print
settings. For example, print on both sides of the page
(duplex), adjust the margins, and eliminate the
banner sheet to cut down on the amount of paper
your business uses.
Use Recycled Paper – Recycled paper that contains
at least 30% postconsumer fiber content allows your
organization to make better use of materials and to
save on resources. Recycled paper also uses fewer
trees and chemicals during production than new
paper.
Recycle Used Paper – Your office may already be
printing on recycled paper, but how are your employees discarding it? Start a recycling program within
your office.
• Go Digital – Reduce your paper usage by switching from paper communications such as memos to
electronic communications such as email.
Implement a Managed Print Solution – Many
businesses outsource the management of its print
devices to a third party. These parties provide
valuable insight into an organization’s print environment and help them create actionable solutions that
help monitor and control costs.
