Newberry Library Fellowship Grant
Winter 2013
The Newberry Library of Chicago and the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Illinois proudly
announce an annual grant enabling two short-term Fellowships for qualified PhD and postdoctoral scholars to study
at The Newberry Library.
The annual grant of $5,000 from the Illinois Mayflower Society will support two Fellows selected by the Newberry Library who will use the Library's collections to pursue original research in early American history and culture.
The establishment of this grant is in keeping with the mission of the Illinois Mayflower Society to promote Mayflower
history and ideals and the education objectives of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Fellowships at the Newberry Library provide support for researchers who need to use the Library's extensive collections. Each year the
Newberry offers both short-term Fellowships of one or two months and
long-term Fellowships of four to twelve months. Generally, short-term
Fellowships, such as those funded by the Illinois Society, are intended to
assist those who live outside the Chicago area and need to examine specific items in the Newberry's collections.

pleased to now support new scholarship in early American history by
Newberry Fellows. It will contribute to a greater awareness of the broad legacy of the Mayflower Pilgrims; it will add
to our knowledge of the later growth, strength, and diversity of American culture based on democratic self-rule, foretold in the spirit of the Mayflower Compact.”
Max Douglas Brown, Governor of the Illinois Mayflower Society is also very enthusiastic about the Fellowship
grant. He observes, ”I believe our membership appreciates the Board's efforts to find ways for our organization to be
active and relevant in today's society. This grant is in line with our past support of genealogical libraries across Illinois,
our gifts of Mayflower materials to schoolchildren, our annual scholarship award to an outstanding high school senior, and our support of the Chicago Metro History Education Center prizes to students and teachers who participate
in the annual Chicago History Fair. We will continue to support scholarly and public efforts that increase awareness of
our Mayflower heritage.”
Governor’s Message
You will notice a few changes in your Mayflower Newsletter. The Governor’s Message has traditionally appeared on the front page of the Newsletter. We think that this place of honor should be given to some of the noteworthy events and activities of our organization so in the future, the most newsworthy activity of the Illinois Mayflower Society will appear on the front page of the Newsletter.
You might also notice that this version of your Newsletter contains more pictures and fewer words than in the
past. While we may not be able to tell you about all of the activities of the Illinois Mayflower Society simply with pictures, we do subscribe to the notion that pictures are worth a thousand words. So in the future, you will see more
pictures as a part of the Newsletter.
Of special note is the fact that at spring and fall meetings of the Illinois Mayflower Society we will be taking
pictures of all those in attendance grouped according to their Mayflower passenger ancestors. These pictures will not
only acknowledge those in attendance at these meetings but will serve as an historic record of our organization’s
membership. We hope you enjoy this new feature and that in the future you might be able to attend one of the
luncheons in order to appear in the pictures.
Best regards.

Fall Luncheon & Annual Meeting — Springfield
Group Tour at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum
Reading the Mayflower Compact
New Member Ceremony
The historic restaurant Maldaner’s in downtown Springfield was the site of this year’s annual meeting on November 17th. Governor Max Douglas Brown welcomed 108 members and guests. Elder Ralph Moore gave the invocation; Captain Dorr Lewright led the Pledge of Allegiance; and Recording Secretary Mary Morony read the names of the
men and women passengers on the Mayflower. Finance Chair Carolyn Pribble read the Treasurer’s Report on behalf of
John Schellinger.
Governor Max Douglas Brown recognized Captain General Ken Callison who made a few comments on behalf
of the newly created PR Committee of the General Society. John Kemp spoke to the audience about the upcoming trip
to England and Holland sponsored by the General Society. [See article by John Kemp elsewhere in this Newsletter
which provides more information about this exciting trip.] Ralph Moore as Chairman of the Nominating Committee
then read the list of the persons nominated for the various offices on the Board of Assistants. The slate of nominees
was duly elected.
After lunch Membership Secretary Don Sherman read the list of our fellow members who had died within the
past several years as well as the list of new members whose lines had been approved by the Historian General. Deputy
Governor Jane Schleinzer then officiated at the Recognition Ceremony for the new members in attendance. Prior to
the program, Ralph Moore on behalf of the Prairie Colony presented the Illinois Mayflower Society with a check for
$500 for the Illinois Mayflower Scholarship program.
Jane Schleinzer introduced Kathryn M. Harris, Library Services Director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, who gave a delightful and informative presentation on the ALP Library & Museum, its creation and
recent move from the basement of the Old State Capital to the more spacious building on North Sixth Street, its significant collection of Lincoln and Illinois related books and letters as well as the frequent celebrity status it enjoys because
of the Lincoln connection. Following the program and after the taking of family group pictures [see group photos elsewhere in this Newsletter] Director Harris led everyone on an hour long private tour of the Library.

Mayflower Tour
ENGLAND & HOLLAND—May 17-31, 2013
by John Kemp ([email protected])
Would you like to visit the town where your Pilgrim ancestor was born and lived before he/she came across
the Atlantic in 1620? The General Society of Mayflower Descendants is sponsoring a two week tour of the sites in England and Holland where many of the Mayflower Pilgrims lived before they traveled to America. I understand that our
Illinois Society Governor Max Brown has signed up for the 2013 trip and is encouraging other Illinois Mayflower members to also sign up.
I and my wife, Marti, took the last GSMD tour in 2009 which followed almost the same route as this year’s tour. We found it to be an inspiring, awesome, interesting, and fun experience. It was a once-in-alifetime experience when I walked down the aisle to the altar of St. Mary’s
Church in Redenhall where my 10th great grandfather, Edward Fuller,
was baptized in 1575. I can’t explain what it was like to sit in the jail cell in
Boston where Elder William Brewster and Governor William Brewster
were imprisoned. We will never forget praying in the Elizabethan Garden
in Plymouth where the Pilgrims prayed before boarding the Mayflower for
that long journey across the Atlantic
This spring’s tour begins on May 18 in London with a general tour of the city including Southwark where some
of the Separatists were imprisoned in the infamous Clink Prison and Rotherhithe, the home of Master Christopher
Jones, Captain of the Mayflower.
From there the tour will head south through Canterbury (home of
James Chilton); on to Dorking (William Mullins); then to Southampton
(where the Mayflower from London and the Speedwell from Holland met
and left for America); Dartmouth (where the Speedwell started leaking);
Plymouth (where the Speedwell was leaking so badly that the decision was
made to proceed with only the Mayflower).
After leaving the southern coast, the tour will visit several sites in
Wales and then travel to Shipton (home of the More Children); Droitwich
(Edward and John Winthrop); Babworth (Richard Clifton); Scrooby (Elder William Brewster); Austerfield (Governor William Bradford); Boston (jail in which Brewster and Bradford were held);
Henlow (Henry Samson and Elizabeth Tilley); Fen Stanton (John Howland); Cambridge (hotbed of Separatist activity
where Brewster and Rev. John Robinson studied).
The tour group will board a ferry at Harwich and cross the Channel to Holland. The group will spend a day visiting the sites of Amsterdam and stay in Leiden, where many Pilgrims spent several years before leaving for America.
In Leiden, the group will have as its guide Dr. Jeremy Bangs, curator of the American Pilgrim Museum.
For more information about this year’s tour, including specific itinerary, costs, hotels, etc., you may contact:

My Visit to Plymouth
by Margery Piersen, Co-historian
My husband Joe and I visited Plymouth October 23 and met with the Historian General Paul Bumpus at the
Mayflower Society headquarters. Paul graciously gave us a tour, showed us the document storage rooms, and shared
some of his concerns. We also met Carolyn Travers and Bonnie Conant who work with the state historians. Steve
Brown, the computer guru in charge of the Society scanning and document storage projects, spent considerable time
with us. He also reviews applications and volunteers as a state historian.
We spent the morning at Plimoth Plantation and late in the day climbed Burial Hill. Visiting the recreated village was the perfect introduction to visiting the original site of the settlement.

General Board of Assistants Meeting — New Jersey
Max Douglas Brown, Don West, Mary Morony, Bruce MacGunnigle,
Ralph Moore and Jane Schleinzer
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants holds its Congress every three years in Plymouth, Massachusetts. At Congress meetings membership elects officers for the next three years and conducts other important business
(e.g., consider amendments to the General Society Bylaws). In the period between these triennial meetings the General
Society annually convenes what is called a General Board of Assistants Meeting. These meetings are held in cities other
than Plymouth. At these meetings the official delegates from each state society—called Deputy Governor Generals and
Assistant Governor Generals—hear committee reports, receive updates on important projects and conduct such other
business as may be put before them by the Executive Committee of the General Society.
The 2012 General Board of Assistants Meeting was held in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey from September 6th to the
9th. Representing the Illinois Mayflower Society at this year’s meeting were Governor Max Douglas Brown (DGG) and
past Governor Ralph Moore (AGG). Also in attendance from Illinois were Don West (in his role as past Deputy Governor
General of the General Society), Jane Schleinzer (Illinois Deputy Governor) and Mary Morony (Illinois Recording Secretary). In addition to their other roles Ralph Moore serves on the 2020 Committee of the General Society and Jane
Schleinzer serves on the PR Committee of the General Society.
Three issues dominated the discussions of the delegates at this year’s meeting: 1) What is the best use of the
Mayflower House in Plymouth (also known as the Winslow Home) to further the mission and goals of the General Society? 2) How might we improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the State Historian structure? 3) What strategies
might we use to strengthen fundraising?
Optional tours for delegates and their guests included a visit to the Battleship New Jersey—the most decorated
battleship in the US Navy—now preserved as a museum in Camden New Jersey; a trip to Atlantic city and its famous
casinos on the Jersey Shores; a tour of the Old Barracks Museum in Trenton; or a trip to historic Cape May County on
the southern tip of the state. (One can only wonder at the horrible devastation and damage to some of these sites
caused by Hurricane Sandy several months after the meeting.)
The 2013 General Board of Assistants Meeting will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from September 5 to 8,
2013.

Great Prairie Colony
The Great Prairie Colony of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Illinois was formed at Kensington House in
Rochester, Illinois on April 27, 2002. Twenty two people attended the organizational meeting. The Colony was formed
to provide a group in the central part of the state, however we now have active members from the Quad cities area,
Alton, Edwardsville, Belleville, Champaign-Urbana, Macomb and other parts of Illinois.
Our Colony has three or more major meetings each year with other activities through out the year. Our
meetings and special summer picnics are fun and educational events. Members of the Colony are now planning activities and meetings for the coming year. Our central location near all of the historical sites in Springfield provides a
wealth of meeting and seminar opportunities
Pilgrim Research by Jeremy Bangs
In his landmark book, Strangers and Pilgrims, Jeremy Duprecius Bangs, sets out the life and times, struggles
and turmoil of the Pilgrim community while in Leiden that led them to come to the new world. This book took over
ten years to research and write. The extensive effort was made possible by the underwriting of the General Society
of Mayflower Descendants which published the book that is now in its second printing. Moreover, Dr. Bangs is a regular contributor to the Mayflower Quarterly.
Jeremy Bangs is one of the leading historians to examine the life of the Pilgrims, both in Leiden and in America. His monumental efforts have provided great insight into those early settlers and have also corrected many misconceptions about them. He is presently working to complete transcribing the Plymouth Colony Records from 1657
to 1690 as well as several of the early town records of the colony; preparing a sequel to Strangers and Pilgrims that
covers the history of the Leiden Church after the original group left in 1620, since many families had members that
came later, and various smaller Pilgrim-related items that peak his curiosity.
In addition, Jeremy Bangs helped organize and runs the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum in Leiden and is
working to create a Leiden Pilgrims Document Center to preserve the historical materials that exist. This is all an
overwhelming task for one person whose passion is to inform us and provide an accurate picture of the background
and context that caused the Pilgrims to make their monumental journey. Many members have also enjoyed the hospitality of Bangs and his wife when visiting Holland and the Leiden experience.
Due to other financial obligations and a need to expand research efforts on the Five Generations project, this
year GSMD approved only partial funding for Jeremy Bangs. Several State Societies have offered to pick up the balance needed to support Bangs so that this vital research can continue. Illinois has contributed to Jeremy’s support
over the past several years and has voted again to take a leadership role in this effort along with the Pennsylvania
and Florida societies.
Supporting the efforts of Bangs also helps GSMD and those contributing societies fulfill the IRS requirements
for being a 501 (C) (3) tax-exempt organization. Gifts should be made to the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum. It is
a not for profit that qualifies for US tax deduction.
Send the payment: c/o Jeremy Bangs, Madenmakerssteeg #11, 2311 ED, Leiden Netherlands. You will help
sustain a major effort in understanding our Pilgrims roots.
