Kadlec Regional Medical

n 1944, the hospital situated in Richland
was built to serve the 50,000 workers
and families who came to build the
Hanford Nuclear Site as part of the
Manhattan Project. Today, 65 years later,
what began as a military hospital has grown
into Kadlec Health System, the not-forprofit organization that provides critical
health care services for the Tri-Cities and
surrounding areas, including many Oregon
communities. Recently, the medical center’s
name was changed to Kadlec Regional
Medical Center to reflect that growth.
“A regional referral medical center is one that
provides unique and higher level services for
patients, not just in its own community but
throughout the region,” says Rand Wortman,
Kadlec Health System President and Chief
Executive Officer. “By changing our name,
what we are
really doing
is reflecting
the type and
range of
services we
are providing
to this entire
region.”

Kadlec offers
a broad
spectrum
of medical,
surgical and rehabilitative inpatient, outpatient
and same-day services. The hospital’s
physicians and staff are focused on delivering
high-quality and compassionate care. With its
state-of-the-art medical technology, patients
benefit from some of the latest and most
advanced treatments and procedures available.
Kadlec’s accomplishments and services in the
area of cardiac care are especially noteworthy.
“A heart attack is a major event and usually
requires a minimum four or five day stay
in the hospital. Prior to Kadlec having a
program, you had to drive your family to
Spokane or Yakima. So we are meeting
key patient and family needs for this
community and this region,” Wortman
explains. “If you need open heart surgery,
angioplasty or a stent, those services are
only offered at Kadlec in this region.”
Other examples of Kadlec’s exclusive,
advanced-medical services include intensive
neonatal care and neurosurgery. The hospital’s
neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was
created in 1982. The unit is on the verge of a
major expansion. (See sidebar) In the past few
years Kadlec has also developed a relationship
with Seattle Children’s Hospital, the premier
pediatric hospital in the Northwest.
In addition, a new organization, the Kadlec
Neuroscience Center, is concentrating
on neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic
spinal surgery, pain management and
physiatry all in one location.
“We recruited specialists in these areas
to meet a key patient need in our area,”
says Wortman. “Kadlec is now becoming
a regional referral service for folks with
all kinds of neurological disorders.”
Kadlec’s association with Planetree
Hospitals is another factor contributing
to its ability to provide comprehensive
care that puts the patient first. The
organization’s philosophy is focused on
meeting the needs of patients and families
when they are in the health care setting.
“In this day and age, when the public
is paying more out of pocket, they are
demanding more in their health care choices,”
says Wortman. “We’ve focused on building
an organization culture that really puts the
patient at the center. We deliver exclusive
services within a culture of patient care that is
progressive and growth-focused to meet the
needs both in our area and in our region.”
Wortman cites Kadlec Regional Medical
Center’s physicians and staff as central
to its continuing growth and success.
The organization has more than doubled
its workforce over the past few years and

iven present population trends, the
need for a pediatric center in the
Mid-Columbia region is clear. Currently, in
Benton and Franklin counties, infants and
children up to age 18 number almost
63,000 of the 225,000 residents.
Projections show that the population
total of Benton and Franklin counties
will be 254,000 by 2020. But the
most important statistic of
all: children under 18 years
of age are expected to
number 85,200. That’s nearly
22,000 more children than
the current population.
As the population
grows the number of
births will increase,
as well as the needs
for pediatric programs
and services. That’s why Kadlec Regional
Medical Center is preparing now for these
trends by elevating its neonatal intensive
care unit (NICU) from level two to level three.
Kadlec is already home to the region’s only
NICU, treating high-risk newborns that need
specialized care. Now, after a successful
community funding effort capped off by
a major gift from a Tri-Cities family, Kadlec
Health System and the Kadlec Foundation
will open a $7.9 million pediatric center
in the new Kadlec River Pavilion. Starting in
November, the 20-bed Don and Lori Watts
Pediatric Center will occupy the entire fifth floor
of the new building and provide state-of-theart pediatric care for
the entire region.
continues to focus recruiting efforts on
attracting dedicated professionals.
It really comes down to growing with the
community and putting the patient first.
“We bring the type of physicians that are
committed to providing the highest level of
care possible,” Wortman notes. “We have a
very talented and highly motivated group
of physicians. When you have physicians
who are excited and committed to providing
great care to their patients the quality of
the care is continuously improving.”
“Our goal has always been to respond to
the needs of the community and provide
the highest care we can for our patients,”
Wortman concludes. “We offer a more
extensive array of services, more technological
advances and a greater range of expertise
than ever before because that is what our
region needs, today and into the future. We
want everyone to know they are welcome
here and we are able and willing to serve
their health care needs.”
For the people who live in and around the TriCities area, Kadlec Regional Medical Center
has made a difference. As the organization
continues to expand its facilities and services,
it means that those in need of health care can
get the treatment they need closer to home
without traveling to Seattle or Spokane.
