Instead of trying to lose weight or something like that, try something new this year. Look deep down
into your heart and remember why you became a Knight in the first place. Rekindle that feeling of
what brought you to the Order. Each of us had a different experience that led us to the Knights of
Columbus. Search deep and bring back all those thoughts and feelings you had when you first
joined the Knights. If you do I can assure you that the New Year will become one of the most
rewarding years ever for you.
For me, it was, at first, the opportunity to be associated with the finest group of men I have ever
known. I initially joined the Knights for the fraternity. Little did I know that another part of the Knights
would capture my attention even more in a very short amount of time. I am talking about the Charity
pillar of the Knights of Columbus. Little did I know nor understand that charity would become my
main interest in the Knights. The opportunity to practice charity almost on a daily basis has become
one of the most important parts of who I am today. I thank you all for offering me that opportunity.

There are some important reminders of events that are coming up right after the start of the New
Year. The Second / Third Degree on January 4th at Council 1200, the Fourth Degree on January
10th, the Council 10441 Free Throw Contest on January 10th, and the State Raffle begins officially
on January 1st. On January 31st come help pick oranges down at the Benedictine Monastery. There
is the Pancake Breakfast on January 4th, the Blood Drive on January 11th, Coffee and Doughnuts
on January 18th, and the list goes on.
So you can see that there are lots of opportunities to get involved and do good things for other
people. There are plenty of opportunities to practice charity, unity and fraternity. Those pillars keep
us together as Knights. So come on out and refresh yourself with that feeling of why you became a
Knight in the first place. You will be glad you did.

~ Upcoming Events ~
Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship ~ We have an upcoming fun event, the Knights of Columbus
Basketball Free Throw Championship Contest for boys and girls ages 9 to 14. Our council competition will be held
Saturday, January 10, 2015, 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Parking Lot (southeast corner).
Contestants will compete in their respective age divisions. Winners can progress through local, district and state
competition. We will award to all participants a KofC Free Throw Competition Patch. Participants must have
parental consent. Council Brother Knights are requested to support this event by inviting boys and girls ages 9 to 14
that you may know, to participate in this annual council event (no cost). For additional information contact Tom

UPCOMING EXEMPLIFICATIONS ~
Second/Third Degree ~ There will be two upcoming exemplification ceremonies that all First Degree Council
members and all Third Degree Council members should consider participating in.
On Sunday, January 4, 2015, Council 1200 will host a Second/Third Degree exemplification. The candidate show
time is 8:45 a.m. and the ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be finished by approximately 2:30 p.m.
Lunch will be provided. There is no cost to the candidate. Dress is Knights shirt and nametag and slacks.
If you are a First Degree interested in making your Second/Third Degree, please contact Grand Knight Alex Wright,

Please consider making this important advancement in your Knight’s journey. You will be glad you did.
Fourth Degree ~ On Saturday, January 10, 2015, there will be a Fourth Degree exemplification in Tucson. The
ceremony and dinner will be held at the Doubletree Hotel here in Tucson. There will be a social hour on Friday
night, January 9th, and the ceremony and banquet dinner will be on Saturday, January 10th. This is an excellent
opportunity for all Third Degrees to become a Fourth Degree Knight as this is the only Fourth Degree ceremony
held in Tucson this year.
If you are interested, and this includes those Brother Knights who make their Second/Third Degrees on January 4th,

The tenet of the Fourth Degree is Patriotism. You will find the ceremony and the good works of the Fourth Degree

Mother, help our faith!
Open our ears to hear God’s word and to recognize his voice and
call.
Awaken in us a desire to follow in his footsteps, to go forth from
our own land and to receive his promise.
Help us to be touched by his love, that we may touch him in faith.
Help us to entrust ourselves fully to him and to believe in his love, especially at times of trial, beneath the
shadow of the cross, when our faith is called to mature.
Sow in our faith the joy of the Risen One.
Remind us that those who believe are never alone.
Teach us to see all things with the eyes of Jesus, that he may be light for our path. And may this light of
faith always increase in us, until the dawn of that undying day which is Christ himself, your Son, our Lord!
This is the prayer through Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of our faith, with which Pope Francis
ends his Encyclical “Lumen Fidei”. It is also a very appropriate prayer for us to begin the venture of a
New Year. Do take its phrase slowly, so that each of us can be “touched by (God’s) love, that we may
touch him in faith”.
A prosperous and faith-filled New Year to you all!

Mass and Dinner with the Bishop ~ This upcoming event, the 11th such, is
scheduled for Sunday, January 18th at 4:00 p.m. at the Skyline Country Club with
Mass to begin at 4:00 p.m. The celebrant, Bishop Kicanas, will be joined by the usual
20 con-celebrants. A social hour will follow, which in turn will be followed by the
banquet. This year our honoree is Msgr. Robert Fuller, not quite yet retired, and all the
other retired priests of our diocese. The program will be a video of Msgr. Fuller, who
still serves his parishioners at Saint Frances Cabrini Parish, despite health problems.
The menu consists of both Filet Mignon and Grilled Jumbo Shrimp, with wine to the table. The cost remains the same;
$150.00 per person of which $100.00 is tax deductible. All of the proceeds have gone to the Priests Assurance Corp. which to
date totals over $523,000. As a reminder; if you get your checks in before December 31st you can use the deduction this year
(2014) - after January 1st it will fall into 2015. Our Bishop has asked us to keep up our efforts in assisting him to provide for
our retired priests. Please help us to provide for those who have served us all their lives and most still do in retirement, health
permitting. We must not forget our retired priests!

Knights Round Table ~ Our next discussion group will meet on Saturday, January the 3rd after the 8:00 a.m. chapel mass.
After our usual coffee and doughnuts we will begin our discussion at about 8:30. Our topic will be from the "Jesuits in Britain"
and is titled: "SYNOD WAS A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY": CARDINAL NICOLAS. We will adjourn at 9:55 and all are welcome:
knights, spouses and guests. Our last gathering, which was in December, resulted in 30 attending with Fathers Chris Corbally
and Paul Gabor mentoring. Both should be with us in January. We are indebted to them for their continuing support.
Newcomers are most welcome!! Special thanks to Brothers Paul Federico and David Orr for arranging the library seating and
preparing the refreshments. Call Marty at 577-1037 for more information.
Red Cross Blood Drive ~ Our next bi-monthly Red Cross Blood Drive will be on Sunday, January the 11th from 7:30 a.m. to
noon. All our members and their family members are urged to donate (health permitting), as lately the general response has
been down. Signing up on the sheets in the narthex of church is very important for a successful drive. Our quota is generally
45 to 50 pints. There is no upper age limit and teenagers can donate with parental permission. The dates for the drives for
2015 are: Jan. 11, Mar. 8, May 10, July 12, Sept. 13 and Nov. 8. Blood Drives are one of the parts of the Knights of Columbus
"Surge" Programs for Community Support! If you forget to sign up in church call Marty at 577-1037 and he will do so for you
from home.

Christmas Party ~ Our annual Christmas party/dance was a big success with 62 attending and enjoying the Salpointe Jazz
Band consisting of 5 very talented teenage student musicians. The raffle was much fun and the meal of Filet Mignon or
Salmon was as usual up to Skyline Country Club's high standards. All the toys brought to the event were delivered to Santa
Cruz Church for their St. Vincent De Paul committee to distribute to their needy children. Thanks are due to PGK Tom Bohan
and his committee for their efforts!
Pancake Breakfast ~ Lloyd LaComb reports that a total of 128 breakfasts were served after the 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
masses on December the 7th. With a gross of $421 and $58 in expenses - $362 was transferred to the council. Proceeds are
running ahead of last year by $200. Our volunteer workers were: Charlie Farnsworth, Bob Gonzalez, Ron Gretka, Randy
Hannon, Jeff Kennedy, Lloyd LaComb, James McKearney, Patrick McMahon, Tom Metzger, TK Mohr, Allan Reith, Larry
Rylance, Alex Wright and Tom Yearout. The next serving will be on Sunday January the 4th.

~ Annual Christmas Party ~
The Council held its annual Christmas party at Skyline Country Club on Sunday, December 7th. Everyone had a great
time and we collected a large number of toys for donation. Thanks so much to Brothers Tom Bohan, Randy Hannon and
Tom Metzger for organizing the party. And thanks to everyone who came for supporting the Knights.

Where did 2014 go? It seems like it was summer yesterday and Easter was last week!
I hope you and your family had a great finish to 2014. Now, the first quarter of 2015 is approaching.
Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for this year. I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions.
First, write them down. It’s not too late if you haven’t already done this. Commit your goals to paper
and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. I
don’t know exactly how this works, but I’ve heard stories of the success this simple task can bring.
Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television,
you’re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down.

God and he desired nothing for himself. God is complete. Humility is the ability to lower
one’s self and serve brothers and sisters. Humility is having a will to serve. The reality is
even unbelievers can and do serve too. What is the difference then? The difference if we

walking with them. Humility takes self-denial. It takes sacrifice. It takes carrying our cross
and walking behind Jesus. You see, our only hope is in his Cross. Think about this, God
can do nothing but lower himself, right? Is there anything above God? Can God climb any
higher? So, how does God humble himself? God dwells in us needy creatures. God
chooses to make us His temples.
Here is the thing about humility; we cannot be humble before God if we are not humble
before our brothers and sisters. This said, humility never means we do not use our talents
and gifts, it means the opposite. We use them for the service of others.
If we take being Knights seriously, then we know that Fr. Michael McGivney established the
fraternal order of the Knights of Columbus for Catholic men, so that we could humbly reach
out and become one with our brothers and sisters in need. We are to touch lives in Christ’s
name in oneness with him. Why? We point to them to their Saviour. Fr. McGivney knew
well that humility is something we gain and practice as we grow in wisdom and grace. If
you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become

~ Annual Christmas Party ~
The Council held its annual Christmas party at Skyline Country Club on Sunday, December 7th. Everyone had a great
time and we collected a large number of toys for donation. Thanks so much to Brothers Tom Bohan, Randy Hannon and
Tom Metzger for organizing the party. And thanks to everyone who came for supporting the Knights.
~ Insurance Check-Up For 2015 ~
Where did 2014 go? It seems like it was summer yesterday and Easter was last week!
I hope you and your family had a great finish to 2014. Now, the first quarter of 2015 is approaching.
Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for this year. I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions.
First, write them down. It’s not too late if you haven’t already done this. Commit your goals to paper
and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. I
don’t know exactly how this works, but I’ve heard stories of the success this simple task can bring.
Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television,
you’re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down.

Mass and Dinner with the Bishop ~ This upcoming event, the 11th such, is
scheduled for Sunday, January 18th at 4:00 p.m. at the Skyline Country Club with
Mass to begin at 4:00 p.m. The celebrant, Bishop Kicanas, will be joined by the usual
20 con-celebrants. A social hour will follow, which in turn will be followed by the
banquet. This year our honoree is Msgr. Robert Fuller, not quite yet retired, and all the
other retired priests of our diocese. The program will be a video of Msgr. Fuller, who
still serves his parishioners at Saint Frances Cabrini Parish, despite health problems.
The menu consists of both Filet Mignon and Grilled Jumbo Shrimp, with wine to the table. The cost remains the same;
$150.00 per person of which $100.00 is tax deductible. All of the proceeds have gone to the Priests Assurance Corp. which to
date totals over $523,000. As a reminder; if you get your checks in before December 31st you can use the deduction this year
(2014) - after January 1st it will fall into 2015. Our Bishop has asked us to keep up our efforts in assisting him to provide for
our retired priests. Please help us to provide for those who have served us all their lives and most still do in retirement, health
permitting. We must not forget our retired priests!

Knights Round Table ~ Our next discussion group will meet on Saturday, January the 3rd after the 8:00 a.m. chapel mass.
After our usual coffee and doughnuts we will begin our discussion at about 8:30. Our topic will be from the "Jesuits in Britain"
and is titled: "SYNOD WAS A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY": CARDINAL NICOLAS. We will adjourn at 9:55 and all are welcome:
knights, spouses and guests. Our last gathering, which was in December, resulted in 30 attending with Fathers Chris Corbally
and Paul Gabor mentoring. Both should be with us in January. We are indebted to them for their continuing support.
Newcomers are most welcome!! Special thanks to Brothers Paul Federico and David Orr for arranging the library seating and

Red Cross Blood Drive ~ Our next bi-monthly Red Cross Blood Drive will be on Sunday, January the 11th from 7:30 a.m. to
noon. All our members and their family members are urged to donate (health permitting), as lately the general response has
been down. Signing up on the sheets in the narthex of church is very important for a successful drive. Our quota is generally
45 to 50 pints. There is no upper age limit and teenagers can donate with parental permission. The dates for the drives for
2015 are: Jan. 11, Mar. 8, May 10, July 12, Sept. 13 and Nov. 8. Blood Drives are one of the parts of the Knights of Columbus
"Surge" Programs for Community Support! If you forget to sign up in church call Marty at 577-1037 and he will do so for you
from home.

Christmas Party ~ Our annual Christmas party/dance was a big success with 62 attending and enjoying the Salpointe Jazz
Band consisting of 5 very talented teenage student musicians. The raffle was much fun and the meal of Filet Mignon or
Salmon was as usual up to Skyline Country Club's high standards. All the toys brought to the event were delivered to Santa
Cruz Church for their St. Vincent De Paul committee to distribute to their needy children. Thanks are due to PGK Tom Bohan
and his committee for their efforts!
Pancake Breakfast ~ Lloyd LaComb reports that a total of 128 breakfasts were served after the 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
masses on December the 7th. With a gross of $421 and $58 in expenses - $362 was transferred to the council. Proceeds are
running ahead of last year by $200. Our volunteer workers were: Charlie Farnsworth, Bob Gonzalez, Ron Gretka, Randy
Hannon, Jeff Kennedy, Lloyd LaComb, James McKearney, Patrick McMahon, Tom Metzger, TK Mohr, Allan Reith, Larry
Rylance, Alex Wright and Tom Yearout. The next serving will be on Sunday January the 4th.

~ Upcoming Events ~
Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship ~ We have an upcoming fun event, the Knights of Columbus
Basketball Free Throw Championship Contest for boys and girls ages 9 to 14. Our council competition will be held
Saturday, January 10, 2015, 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Parking Lot (southeast corner).
Contestants will compete in their respective age divisions. Winners can progress through local, district and state
competition. We will award to all participants a KofC Free Throw Competition Patch. Participants must have
parental consent. Council Brother Knights are requested to support this event by inviting boys and girls ages 9 to 14
that you may know, to participate in this annual council event (no cost). For additional information contact Tom

UPCOMING EXEMPLIFICATIONS ~
Second/Third Degree ~ There will be two upcoming exemplification ceremonies that all First Degree Council
members and all Third Degree Council members should consider participating in.
On Sunday, January 4, 2015, Council 1200 will host a Second/Third Degree exemplification. The candidate show
time is 8:45 a.m. and the ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be finished by approximately 2:30 p.m.
Lunch will be provided. There is no cost to the candidate. Dress is Knights shirt and nametag and slacks.
If you are a First Degree interested in making your Second/Third Degree, please contact Grand Knight Alex Wright,

Please consider making this important advancement in your Knight’s journey. You will be glad you did.
Fourth Degree ~ On Saturday, January 10, 2015, there will be a Fourth Degree exemplification in Tucson. The
ceremony and dinner will be held at the Doubletree Hotel here in Tucson. There will be a social hour on Friday
night, January 9th, and the ceremony and banquet dinner will be on Saturday, January 10th. This is an excellent
opportunity for all Third Degrees to become a Fourth Degree Knight as this is the only Fourth Degree ceremony
held in Tucson this year.
If you are interested, and this includes those Brother Knights who make their Second/Third Degrees on January 4th,

Mother, help our faith!
Open our ears to hear God’s word and to recognize his voice and
call.
Awaken in us a desire to follow in his footsteps, to go forth from
our own land and to receive his promise.
Help us to be touched by his love, that we may touch him in faith.
Help us to entrust ourselves fully to him and to believe in his love, especially at times of trial, beneath the
shadow of the cross, when our faith is called to mature.
Sow in our faith the joy of the Risen One.
Remind us that those who believe are never alone.
Teach us to see all things with the eyes of Jesus, that he may be light for our path. And may this light of
faith always increase in us, until the dawn of that undying day which is Christ himself, your Son, our Lord!
This is the prayer through Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of our faith, with which Pope Francis
ends his Encyclical “Lumen Fidei”. It is also a very appropriate prayer for us to begin the venture of a
New Year. Do take its phrase slowly, so that each of us can be “touched by (God’s) love, that we may
touch him in faith”.
A prosperous and faith-filled New Year to you all!

Instead of trying to lose weight or something like that, try something new this year. Look deep down
into your heart and remember why you became a Knight in the first place. Rekindle that feeling of
what brought you to the Order. Each of us had a different experience that led us to the Knights of
Columbus. Search deep and bring back all those thoughts and feelings you had when you first
joined the Knights. If you do I can assure you that the New Year will become one of the most
rewarding years ever for you.
For me, it was, at first, the opportunity to be associated with the finest group of men I have ever
known. I initially joined the Knights for the fraternity. Little did I know that another part of the Knights
would capture my attention even more in a very short amount of time. I am talking about the Charity
pillar of the Knights of Columbus. Little did I know nor understand that charity would become my
main interest in the Knights. The opportunity to practice charity almost on a daily basis has become
one of the most important parts of who I am today. I thank you all for offering me that opportunity.

There are some important reminders of events that are coming up right after the start of the New
Year. The Second / Third Degree on January 4th at Council 1200, the Fourth Degree on January
10th, the Council 10441 Free Throw Contest on January 10th, and the State Raffle begins officially
on January 1st. On January 31st come help pick oranges down at the Benedictine Monastery. There
is the Pancake Breakfast on January 4th, the Blood Drive on January 11th, Coffee and Doughnuts
on January 18th, and the list goes on.
So you can see that there are lots of opportunities to get involved and do good things for other
people. There are plenty of opportunities to practice charity, unity and fraternity. Those pillars keep
us together as Knights. So come on out and refresh yourself with that feeling of why you became a
Knight in the first place. You will be glad you did.
