From the President
Each of us lives in a go-go society, busy lives, endless information,
and infinite choices on where to place our attention, “24/7”. In addition, we
inhabit a time in history that is significant for its multiplicity of issues: geopolitical, environmental, health, ethical, spiritual, personal. We are
overwhelmed by the sheer number and import of these issues. It is natural and
easy to shut off and begin circumscribing what directly affects “me”, “myself”.
As the dominant species on the planet, our patterns of living, which
we have established, are no longer beneficial, sustainable, or entirely
comfortable. Changing our behavior requires a sense for the new direction,
involves discipline, and belief in a positive outcome. All of these traits are not
necessarily tuned up or, handy to employ.
In our BRMNAP microcosm, we are sensing the need for a new
perspective on stewarding these mountains’ natural resource features.
We are discussing, with science professionals from Virginia’s
Division of Natural Heritage, ways to cultivate the mountains regenerative
(recovery) systems. We continue our supportive partnership with the owner of
the Preserve, Virginia Outdoors Foundation, to envision a thriving positive
outcome for the bio-diversity of this protected mountain landscape. DNH,
VOF, and BRMC have focused on the most visible and signature piece of the
Preserve, the privately owned, leased, High Point rock outcrop landscape,
domain of unique and rare geologic, arboreal, herpetological and flora species.
It is a disciplined action taken by the three organization partners to
remove this feature from daily public use in order that it may be restored to its
prior undistressed state. It is a discipline, also, for those of you who recreate in
this Preserve, to comprehend the reasons for this, and support the recovery
process.
The Bull Run Mountains have hosted the hiking public for twenty
years, with increased annual visitors as the area’s population has grown. We
are envisioning a new model of use that would seek to partner with the hiking
public to ensure that the Bull Run Mountains’ attractive and unique features
are not erased, before our eyes, into a sterile suburban climbing facility, losing
the intricate inter-connected living plants and creatures that have given the
mountains its character and meaning all these shared decades.
We sincerely seek your input as to how to successfully restore,
sustain, and share the Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve with you, our
environmentally appreciative membership.

From the Executive Director
Dear Members,
Thank you for your support of Bull Run Mountains Conservancy (BRMC)
during our Fiscal Year 2013/14. Your donations have been instrumental to
support 25,000 local and regional schoolchildren, teachers, and adults who
regularly participate in BRMC programs or visit the Preserve. Our members
help facilitate a vibrant volunteer corps that has logged in more than 3,000
hours assisting our education programs, research, and stewardship in 2014.
Your contributions have leveraged over $45,000 in matching funds from
private foundations over the past several years. In addition, you have inspired
in-kind support from local businesses and clubs allowing us to build a
reputation as guardian of the Bull Run Mountains.
This spring BRMC’s activities have engaged adults and children in the
outdoors through a series of programs including Hopewell Observatory,
Naturalist Hikes, Old Home Sites Breakfast, Spring Emergence Hike, Scout
Programs, School Programs, Migratory Bird Walk, Ferns and Friends,
Amphibians of Spring, and Woodcock Watch. BRMC staff, Virginia Natural
Heritage staff, and Virginia Outdoors Foundation staff have begun
implementing a recovery plan for High Point. After assessing the damage, we
are hopeful the fragile cliff vegetation will be able to rebound. Monthly
Saturday Trail Work and “Weekend Warrior” trail monitoring continue to
enhance the Preserve and add to the public enjoyment of the mountains.
We invite you to join our year long program offerings that combine a strong
link to local culture and history and the simple pleasure of walking trails on the
Piedmont. At BRMC, preservation does not mean a hands-off policy, but
rather a focus on drawing people to appreciate the resources at hand and the
completion of research to better understand and protect those resources.
Your support continues to be vital and provides the means to diversify our
programs, continue research studies,
and advance stewardship practices.

Bull Run Mountains Conservancy would like to say thank you to all our
volunteers and interns. We could not do it without your support!
Our volunteers and interns are involved in every aspect of the
Conservancy ̶ from being Weekend Warriors and trail workers, to maintaining
the website, to conducting Eagle Scout projects, to monitoring
American chestnut tree survival and growth, to updating the database.
For all the help that you provide with our educational programs and beyond,
we would also like to thank our 2014 student interns: Kristina Fauss, Sean
