In this issue, we feature Museum scientists who
excavate dinosaur bones and come back from
their expeditions with specimens that inspire awe
and wonder in visitors from around the world. I am
excited to see that every day in the Dinosaur Hall
families are examining fossils up close and watching
behind-the-scenes footage of paleontological
expeditions that take them into the field with us.
Bringing that real field experience inside for
visitors is happening every day at the Page Museum
at the La Brea Tar Pits, too, though the journey
from field to museum is not as far. The La Brea
Tar Pits are the world’s richest deposit of Ice Age
fossils, with 5.5 million excavated since 1913. To
shine a spotlight on this extraordinary site, we have
launched a robust events schedule that connects
the outdoor experiences in the park to the indoor
experiences in the Museum. We are engaging visitors
in a full paleontological journey — from the asphalt
seeps outside to the lab inside, then on to research
and the exhibits. This summer, we will reopen
Pit 91, where visitors will be able to view fossils
still embedded in an excavation pit and the
paleontologists who work on them. This, combined
with Project 23, means visitors will have two active
excavation sites where they can see fossil discovery in
action. At the Observation Pit we have just reopened,
visitors can get a bird’s-eye-view of how fossils
were buried. These stories will come alive for young
visitors in new interactive performances inside
the Museum’s theater.
We will soon be celebrating the Page at a
special evening event, the Ice Age Hair Ball.
The indoor-outdoor party is a kick off, in a way,
the start of an exciting era of improvements
and new energy. We hope you will join us.

200 specimens, live animals, and
scientist demonstrations, just received
a birthday present! The Nature Lab,
which opened in June 2013 as part
of the Museum’s transformation,
was awarded a lengthy accolade:
Special Distinction for Outstanding

The judges praised the myriad ways
the Nature Lab engages visitors in the

Observation Pit
Happenin’s at Hart
The Page Museum at the La Brea Tar
Pits is re-introducing a paleontological
gem. The Observation Pit at the west
end of Hancock Park was constructed
over a tapped-out deposit of fossils
and bubbling asphalt as a circular
building that first opened in 1952.
Visitors can now walk inside and up
to the railing to get a bird’s-eye-view
of what fossil localities look like
while they are being excavated (the
bones are mostly real, but the display
is staged). Before the George C.
Page Museum opened in 1977, the
Observation Pit was the only fossil
museum in the park. As visitors linger
inside and take in the experience
of how animals roamed—and got
trapped — 40,000 years ago, they’ll
get a preview of the treasures being
excavated in real time, just a few
yards away.
There’s something new for kids
after school, courtesy of the William
S. Hart Museum, called Happenin’s
at Hart. The crafty event is on the third
Friday of every month, from 2 to 4 pm
in the William S. Hart Park picnic area.
On Friday, June 20, kids can try their
hands at sculpting like famous Hart
artists Charles Russell and Charles
Cristadoro. Then on Friday, July 18,
they will explore the world of
archaeology. They’ll help the Hart
staff “excavate” an archaeological
find and piece together the puzzle left
by the “artifacts” they have uncovered.
Happenings on the horizon include
building your own model castle,
making your own candles, and
designing your own movie posters.
Get crafty and stop by.

wildflowers. They will likely show up in gardens
where there is native foliage like buckwheats,
salvias, and even the exotic cosmos (for those

To view native bees hard at work pollinating,
step into the new Nature Gardens. Visitors will
see native bees visiting the flowers and taking up
residence in our “bee hotels.” Look for wood pillars—
found in two locations in the Nature Gardens—
that have holes drilled into them to allow the bees
to build their solitary nests inside. Visitors to the
Museum will be inspired not only by the bee hotels,
but also by the tremendous diversity of bee-friendly
plants in our new Pollinator Garden. Come visit the
Nature Gardens and build up the hometown buzz.

Naturalist June / July 2014
There are more than 20,000 species of bees in the
world, according to estimates. In Los Angeles County
alone, the species count likely exceeds 500. The
European honey bee, Apis mellifera, commands most
of the public’s attention. The Museum’s bee experts
and gardeners think it’s time to give the other
99.995 percent of the world’s bees some love.
The native bee fauna of L.A. is diverse — there
are Miner Bees, Leaf-Cutter Bees, Mason Bees,
Cuckoo Bees, Carpenter Bees, Digger Bees, Bumble
Bees, and more. These bees can be big, small, fuzzy,
or bright metallic green. Most of these species are
solitary, so, unlike honey bees, they build nests alone
and not in colonies (and none are aggressive stingers).
Many of the native species of bees pollinate our local

nature hunts in the Nature Gardens, bug collecting
expeditions, and access to 4.5 billion years of life on
Earth. Adventures in Nature camp, both at NHM and
the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, celebrates
its 30th anniversary in 2014. For the occasion, we’re
checking in with campers who are poised to zip
through our indoor-outdoor Museum this summer
and with Adventures in Nature grads—many of
them scientists—who never left camp behind.
Written by Jessica Portner
In its inaugural year, 1984, Adventures
in Nature (AIN) was held at the Page
Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits to make
way for the Olympics held in Exposition
Park across from NHM. But in 1985,
campers were back at NHM making
fossil casts, hatching fish eggs, and
getting aquatic insights from the
Museum’s ichthyologist. From the
start, camp directors made a guarantee
that still carries through today — the
weeklong sessions were to be handson and behind the scenes. Another
promise was that campers of all ages,
from kindergarteners to eighth graders,
were invited to use the Museum’s
research and collections as a jumping
off point for exploration.
“There are so many options for
campers, but what’s unique about our
summer camp is we have the Museum

who oversees Adventures in Nature,
which welcomed 600 campers last

which means they will have a summer

Natalie Bray, 23, testifies to that.
She was a camper for two summers
while in middle school, and then a

master’s degree in conservation
biology at Columbia University.
“I liked that I could be in an ocean

science and animals and rocks. I was
impressed that the curators were very
involved in the community and that, as
a little kid, I could have access to them.”
Sarah Marten, 20, a zoology major
at the University of Hawaii, said that
camp fueled her passion for science.
She first walked up the steps into the
Museum as a kindergartener and then
came every summer until eighth grade.
After that, she volunteered. “I stayed
as long as I could,” she said.
Marten remembers taking nets
out to the Rose Garden and finding
beetles, and then documenting the
catch. When she graduates, Marten
wants to spread awareness of the plight
of endangered species. “The Museum
was able to feed that thirst for
knowledge in me from a really young
age,” she said, “and set it into motion.”

Dinosaur expeditions entail a great
deal of surveying and understanding
the geology of a region. Once a
dinosaur is discovered, the crew
starts by uncovering the bones using
everything from pneumatic pistols
to tiny dental picks. Big tools uncover
much of the rock; delicate tools do
the fine work around them.
Once the bones are exposed
(but before removing them), they’ll
map the dig site using a grid to record
the position of the fossils (dinosaur
data for posterity). They’ll note
significant geological features — See Gnatalie’s distant relative,

summer sun, he wielded a hammer
and tiny dental instruments to help
excavate the bones of a Diplodocuslike dinosaur that lumbered around
150 million years ago. Last fall, the
Pomona College geology major took
his paleontological pursuits even
further — leading an expedition, this
time, through the Petrified Forest
National Park in Arizona. There, he
and his team uncovered an even older
treasure — the skull of a metoposaur,
a giant amphibian from the Triassic
whose last swim was more than
200 million years ago.
“It’s not every day that you
get to look for fossils,” says Gee.
“Some people go on roller
coasters, but this is my
adrenaline rush.
It’s super exciting.”
Fostering that thrill of discovery, and the planning and technical skills
that go with it, is the Dinosaur
Institute’s mission. The DI provides
mentoring to future scientists and
professionals, from volunteers and
docents to undergrads and postdoctoral students. It equips them
to research dinosaur evolution and
to head up digs.
FOREST HUNTER
For his three-day expedition into
the Petrified Forest National Park,
Gee, his college friends, and NHM
Paleontological Preparator José Soler
drove seven hours to reach the
Painted Desert. Walking in a landscape
pockmarked with giant petrified logs,
Gee imparted excavation dos and
don’ts to the uninitiated undergrads:
pick a fossil-rich locale, do an inventory
of gear and food, be observant. Soon
enough, Gee spotted a trail of fossil
fragments, and the team followed them
up a hill. There he saw the metoposaur
skull jutting out of a rock. They used
dental tools to extract the pancakeflat head and wrapped the pink-hued
specimen in plaster bandages to
stabilize it for its return to the Museum.
Museum visitors will experience many
digs (minus the dirt) in the Dinosaur
Hall and marvel at giants unearthed by
paleontologists and, perhaps someday,
their fossil-hunting protégés.
“At the Dinosaur Institute, it’s
thrilling to be able to mentor future
scientists and give them the opportunity to lead and to take responsibility
for making an expedition a success,”
says Dr. Luis Chiappe, DI Director,
“Leading an expedition isn't something you can learn from just classes
and textbooks.”

Naturalist June / July 2014
This summer, trucks packed with
jackhammers, plaster, and tents — the accoutrements of fossil hunting —
and a crew of Museum paleontologists
and international colleagues will
head to the Utah badlands to load
up, literally, on dinosaur treasure.
They’ve counted the days until
they could drive 800 miles into the
hot Utah desert to camp for weeks
and do grueling excavation work
amid blood-sucking insects and
blasting dust storms. The Jurassic
prize, they say, is worth it.
The 20-plus-person crew
includes researchers, technicians,
students, volunteers, and an illustrator.
Yet, before a boot steps into the
badlands, Maureen Walsh, Assistant
Collections Manager for NHM’s
6
Dinosaur Institute (DI), coordinates
the expedition’s logistics from
Los Angeles — she arranges flights,
secures dig permits, and manages
an array of logistical nightmares.
Dr. Luis Chiappe, DI Director,
oversees all of the Museum’s dinosaur
field expeditions. He’s aiming to
collect more of Gnatalie (pronounced
“nat-ah-lee”), a long-necked dinosaur
nicknamed for the stinging gnats
that pestered the excavators. Since
Gnatalie’s discovery, Chiappe and crew
have amassed a large portion of the
plant-eating Diplodocus-like skeleton.
He thinks its bones are those of a
species new to science, but only more
of the skeleton will tell him for sure.
clues to the environment and how
the skeleton was buried. They’ll
then consolidate the bones, trench
around and underneath them, protect
the fossils with tissue and plaster,
and haul them back to NHM.
Gnatalie’s femur, ready for
transport, weighed 650 pounds.
It falls upon Doug Goodreau, DI Lab
Supervisor, to find a way to move
these heavy plaster “jackets”.
He oversees the excavation of the
multiple-dinosaur quarry with equal
parts team management, resourcefulness, and brute strength. “It’s a
lot of hard work, and a lot of fun,”
Goodreau said.
Upon return to NHM, the spoils
of fieldwork have only just begun
to surface. In the Dino Lab, paleontological conservators crack open
the jackets and wield tools that whisk
sandstone away from the bones.
Once the bones are extracted from
the encapsulating rock and stabilized,
collections managers catalogue the
bounty, which becomes available
for study. These fossils help scientists
understand the diversity and evolution
of dinosaurs that lived 150 million
years ago.
Ambitious field expeditions
have yielded displays that leave visitors
in awe. Chiappe, Goodreau, and the
team labored in the Montana badlands
to bring back the 34-foot-tall young
adult T. rex, which towers in the
Dinosaur Hall.
“Expeditions create excitement
because you go into the middle of
nowhere and return to the Museum
with fossil treasures,” Chiappe said.
“Even with all this preparation, you
never know exactly what you’ll find.”

PRIMPING TIPS
At the Hair Ball, outrageous headdresses are encouraged. That can mean
wigging out with a beehive or bouffant
or a tar-bubble-inspired bun. Guests
can also go wild and make a papiermâché and faux locks creation (like this
ice blue mammoth) or fuss over one’s
own weave. Since hairy mammals are
the Ball’s inspiration, it’s fitting that
the Museum’s mammalogist will be on
hand to provide an entertaining hairball
history. One highlight — they were
prized by rulers centuries ago because
of their protective power against poison.
Whether the draw is getting steeped in
history, eating sumptuous fare outdoors
on the longest day of the year, or
dancing under the stars, the Hair Ball
on Saturday, June 21, is where the wild
things will be.

There’s the trio of desert tortoises
(Vanilla, Sage, and Acorn), who may

Jesse Daniel, the NHM’s
Supervisor of Floor Interpretation,
says his well-trained team of GIs handle
each animal and at the same time
share the creature’s story with visitors.
“Everyone is inspired by and has a

Some trainees are more challenging.
The 13 Norway rats zipping around
their Nature Lab habitat are identical,
for instance. (Gordon calls them all

to run, stand up, spin, or throw a ball.

you,” Gordon says, “you can teach
them all kinds of things.”

Moonlit Gardens
live animal keepers, is a zookeeper
with techniques that would rival any
celebrity animal trainer’s tricks.
She has coached snakes to be handled,
habituated bullfrogs, kept rats from
getting bored, and coaxed shy
opossums—such as this charming one
named Avocado—to get ready for
her close up.
Getting a creature to behave on
command or relax enough to greet
awestruck visitors takes patience and
“good animal sense,” says Gordon.
She exposed the marsupial, as a baby,
to a variety of smells, sensations, and
sounds. She regularly hides the now
two-year-old’s food in puzzles so the
pink-nosed mammal has to burrow
for a snack. Tolerating a tummy rub
also earns Avocado a treat (her vittles
include bell peppers and collard
greens). Working for food benefits
any animal’s mental health because it
encourages them to solve problems

How to Train an Opossum
Naturalist June/July 2014 There are dozens of slithering, crawling,
and scurrying species in the Museum.
They live in custom-built Nature Lab
habitats or are showcased in daily
animal presentations that connect
visitors to the surprising wildlife in and
around Los Angeles. There is only one
master animal whisperer, though, for
our menagerie of trainable reptiles,
amphibians, and mammals. Leslie
Gordon, Vertebrate Program Manager,
who comanages the Museum’s
live animal keepers, is a zookeeper
with techniques that would rival any
celebrity animal trainer’s tricks.
She has coached snakes to be handled,

Meeting and Greeting
Gallery Interpreters who conduct
daily Meet a Live Animal presentations
have a bevy of charmers to pick from.
There’s the trio of desert tortoises
(Vanilla, Sage, and Acorn), who may
be munching on flowers. Tallulah, the
bright-green skink likes to lounge on
a branch when presented. Then there’s
the mighty (and gentle) 30-pound
Colombian red-tailed boa nicknamed
Peace, and more.
Jesse Daniel, the NHM’s
Supervisor of Floor Interpretation,
says his well-trained team of GIs handle
each animal and at the same time
share the creature’s story with visitors.
“Everyone is inspired by and has a
connection with animals,” says Daniel.
“One great thing is that no matter
which one you bring out, there’s an
L.A. story you can tell.”
Experience Meet a Live Animal presentations
in the Nature Lab daily at 3 pm.
Animal keepers care for butterflies, too. Visit the
Butterfly Pavilion, open now through Monday,
September 1. Visit NHM.ORG/butterfly.
