TSS 10News YEAR Our News … July 2016 April Leisure & Tourism trip – Experience of Working Life The Year 10 Leisure and Tourism group visited Nuffield Health and Fitness Centre in Cottingley as part of their coursework portfolio. They had a detailed tour of the gym and also had the opportunity to find out about different job roles, interviewing members of staff. It was a proud moment for Mrs Russell, taking such a keen, well-motivated and hard working group of students. A Feast for the Eyes and Ears A number of students wowed the audience with a range of dance performances at St George’s Hall School Proms. The talented dancers produced three pieces, including KS3 Hip-Hop Mash Up, KS4 Contemporary Dance and a KS5 Urban Dance ensemble performance. It was immediately apparent how much time, effort and careful consideration had gone into the dances. One member of the audience said: “The contemporary dance piece was exemplary- it was a mesmerising performance.” The School Proms is an annual concert featuring performances by 800 students from Bradford schools. It was established to celebrate music, dance and drama by the Music and Arts Service and to provide young people with a fantastic opportunity to showcase the many talents and variety of the Arts that exists within schools. Well done to all the Year 10 students involved: Summer McAllister, Rhys Yarde, Scott Blackburn, Nyah Bramble, Kayleigh Briggs, Felicity Woodhouse and Alex Slingsby. June Dance Superstar Scott Impresses Scott Blackburn wowed judges with his solo audition piece at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Each year, professional dance practitioners supply schools with specialised workshops and from these, deserving students are then invited to attend an Open Day at the dance college. If successful, students are formally offered an audition. Scott is one of just 30 students from Yorkshire selected to formally train with the college twice a week. He will be working with a range of established dance practitioners and choreographers, as well as participating in a range of performances throughout the year. The scheme is part of the Centres for Advanced Training in Dance and Scott will experience highly intensive and physically demanding technique classes and workshops to help him to reach his potential as a dancer. This is a truly impressive and well deserved opportunity for Scott and we are very proud of him. July Erasmus+ Exchange Twenty three, Year 10 students took part in an exchange with partner school Amandus-Abendroth Gymnasium in Cuxhaven, Germany this year. The exchange is part of an Erasmus+ project and has been funded for the next three years. The two groups worked with Bradford University to design a computer application to teach languages. The students also delivered German and French lessons to pupils from Baildon C of E, Low Ash and Glenaire primary schools. The exchange lasted two weeks and when they weren’t working on the project, students visited a climbing park, a trampolining centre and Hamburg. When we were playing host, students enjoyed Lazer Tag, a trip to Flamingoland and a meal at the Aagrah. All of the students involved were fantastic ambassadors and really engaged with the project. Chloe Bennett said: “It was a very different experience, life changing, I got to experience a whole different culture and way of life.” Yakshina Mistry said it was the best experience of her life and that she made lots of new friends. Enter the Dragon Some of our talented Year 10 Computing students helped organise the social media campaign for this year’s Lord Mayor’s Dragon Boat Festival in Saltaire. School governor John Cole, approached Jordan Dalby and Laurence Ejraee who relished the chance to co-ordinate the Twitter and Facebook; getting the festival trending and making sure attendance was well above the organisers’ expectation. In return for their hard work, students were offered a Dragon Boat experience at Doe Park in Denholme. The students were joined by eight others from their Computing class and had an amazing time. They practiced different styles of rowing and created a fabulous rhythm that made the boat move ridiculously fast. I think for some of them it was a real eye opening experience. For anyone interested in Dragon Boating please see www.bradfordbarracudas.co.uk Salt’s Got Talent Yet again Year 10 students played a big part in our annual talent show. Special mention goes to Jordan Naismith who managed the lights and sound and was in charge of promotional work and ticket sales along with Zak Yunis and Chris Evans. Big thanks to Sophie Dunne and Abbie Chapman who counted votes on the night. It really couldn’t run without you all, well done. Talent wise Year 10 put on a great show – Summer McAllister did an amazing self choreographed dance piece which thrilled the audience and won her a place in the final four; Claudia Davison sang a beautiful rendition of Missed by Ella Henderson; and Alex Sligsby and Charlotte Papaicovou wowed with a joint dance routine. We were also thrilled with the Year 10 students who turned up to support their friends on the night. PD Day Year 10 students worked with a range of employers on their Personal Development Day in July. The day focused on helping our students get a competitive edge and looked at: - interview skills; - how to write a quality CV; - emotional intelligence; and - a career planning workshop. A busy but very worthwhile day! Form Member of the Year Athletics Success The Under 15 Girls Athletics team did an amazing job at the Bradford School Athletics Championship at Bradford Grammar. The Team consisted of Year 9 and Year 10 girls and our team won the competition, beating Woodhouse Grove, Bradford Girls Grammar, Ilkley Grammar and Beckfoot in the final. Well done to Millie Kelly, Charlotte Ingram, Clare Free, Rhea Southcott and Eve Southcott who secured a personal best of 8.25m in the shot put. In a bid to recognise students who provide a positive impact on the rest of their Form, all Form Tutors were asked to choose a member of the Form as their ‘Form Member of the Year’. The tutors found this a really difficult task as there are so many students who just ‘get it right’ on a daily basis. Well done to: 10 MON – Jannat Asif, 10 FLE – Charlotte Ingram, 10BEN – Jack Morrow, 10GEN – Chris Evans, 10SEG/DEW – Isobel Lawrence, 10YTS – Hayden Bryan, 10JKK – Anisah Begum, 10WIN – Alex Slingsby, 10YNG – Zak Yunis Bear Grylls visits Josh You may remember in our last newsletter we told you about Josh Capper who volunteered to help those who were affected by the severe Christmas flooding…. Well, Chief Scout Bear Grylls stopped by to see Josh and present a special commendation award after the Scout Association heard about the help he gave. Bear said: “He gave up almost all of his holiday to help out and I feel he should be commended for his enthusiasm, hard work and great community spirit.” Josh said: “I saw the effect the floods were having on the community and just wanted to help out. It was a real surprise when Bear Grylls stopped by and was absolutely fantastic to meet him and receive the award.” Form Tutor Focus - Mrs Moon Hobbies: Reading, going out, liberating animals from captivity, the usual things really ;) Favourite song: It’s too hard to choose just one but I’ve been listening to Love is a Laserquest by the Artic Monkeys and Warrior by Kimbra recently. Favourite TV programme: Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders at the moment. Favourite place to visit: I like going to places I used to live to catch up with old friends, so maybe Sheffield and London. If I wasn’t a teacher I’d be: I wouldn’t want to do anything else! If I could have a superpower: Teleportation so I could go get some peace every now and again. Childhood hero: My parents and some of my teachers too, I might not have said that at the time though! Favourite film: Jesus Christ Superstar of course. And finally…… It is difficult to sum up in a few words just how proud we are and what a privilege it is to be on this journey with such an exceptional group of young people. Message to students: Have a rest – you’ve earned it. You’ve worked really hard this year and risen to every challenge. You’re well prepared for whatever next year brings. Believe in yourselves. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you as Year 11 students on Tuesday 6 September 2016. Message to parents/carers: Thank you for your support over the last four years. We very much look forward to working with you and your child as they near the end of their KS3 and KS4 journey. As always, please do contact us anytime regarding your child’s progress. Have a fabulous summer – see you fully refreshed and raring to go in September. Mr Russell Year Leader Miss O’Neill Assistant Year Leader
