Contest Rewards Best Bingo Buddy T he other day, when I was talking to my good friend, Tim Stuart, we thought it would be fun to run a promotion with Bingo halls where players would be asked to nominate one of their fellow players as the person they felt was their “Best Bingo Buddy,” then award prizes based on the best responses. Every Bingo hall Tony Delise has their favorite group of players. These are people who brighten up your day, make you laugh and touch your heart. Tim and I thought this would be a great way for Bingo players to take the time to express how they felt about someone special to them – then roll out the Red Carpet and give them the royal treatment! So, we discussed our idea with our friends at Video King and decided to offer this “Player Friendly” promotion as follows: Open to all Bingo players across North America, participants would simply log on to the Video King Web site: VideoKingNetwork.com – where a list of contest rules and downloadable nomination forms will be posted. The forms can be printed, copied and distributed at Bingo halls, then returned to Video King. Or, participants can submit their Bingo Buddy nominations directly online through our Web site. The nomination form will contain a brief questionnaire, which players would be asked to fill out along with some brief comments describing why they believe this person should be considered for this special honor. Nominations would then be forwarded to Video King where Tim Stuart and his team would review the entries and select the first-, secondand third-place winners. Graphics/Greg Paprocki A caricature of Tony Delise has been created to reflect his Italian heritage and love of gaming. Under the name of “Tony Tombola” (Italian for Bingo), Delise will be featured as a guest columnist for our newsletter, “VKN - The Video King Network.” Delise, Director of Bingo, Slots and Keno at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Reno, Nev.; will dispense gaming advice and wisdom. Simply e-mail your gaming bragging rights, comments and questions to [email protected]. The grand prize will include two round-trip tickets to Reno, Nev., where both Bingo Buddies (nominator and nominee) will be guests of John Ascuaga’s Nugget Hotel Casino, one of the region’s largest and most successful casino resorts, and enjoy a weekend of FREE BINGO! The prize package will include three nights lodging, tickets to the Nugget’s $100,000 Bingo Blowout, free meal vouchers, along with dinner with none other than me, “Tony Tombola,” Mr. Bingo. A global provider of electronic gaming systems, game designs and Bingo hall equipment, Video King is the first company to be awarded a patent for Bingo Racing, a concept developed by key members of our Research & Development and Marketing teams. “We came up with a game concept that is an absolute hit,” said Rusty Morin, Video King’s CFO, who helped in the collaboration of the game design and patent development. “Video King’s Bingo Racing is a highly popular line of themed games, which use randomly generated numbers associated with various race competitors to create an animated event that has the feel and suspense of watching a live contest or race,” he said. The racing phenomena has transformed hundreds of quiet Bingo halls into places where people actually stand up and cheer as they watch the animated race or contest progress on TV screens, located throughout the halls. “Bingo Racing adds visual excitement to the numbers being ‘Racing drawn. The players sense a beginning and an end. Like any race, Wager’ there’s anticipation. They want their race competitors to win. There’s Tickets that edginess that contests create,” Morin said. We have a great OMNI development team that works very hard to help hall managers and workers take the tough job of running a Bingo hall and make it a little easier for them through the use of OMNI. To give some perspective on the scope of this project, here are the brains – so to speak – behind our development team ... Name: Simon Duggan. Title: Senior Software Developer. And – lest ye not forget – a 4th accumulator, must-go jackpot, paid out every 25th game! Now, that’s something the first president of the United States and his party would flip their powdered wigs over. Played as quickly as the Ride of Paul Revere (he had a lot of territory to cover), this fast-paced, fully electronic game uses Video King’s e-BOS™ credit management system to sell cards and award prizes. By using a credit-based account system, participants purchase their cards on a game-by-game basis to begin play. The players, by George, will find the game is easy to understand and user-friendly. In fact, the game format and prizing encourages participants to make incremental purchases to increase their opportunities to win bigger jackpots. The entertaining graphics, large prizes and easy-to-use features are sure to bring increased player spends, making Crazy Quarters one Yankee Doodle Dandy of a game! But seeing is believing ... Tuaño Corners Asian Bingo Market N ot only did he help develop the national lottery system for the Philippines, as well as the Ukraine – polar opposite in climate from his native land, earn a master’s degree in business from one of his country’s most prestigious universities – paying his own way, was an employee for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Southeast Asia, AND played a leading role in a major film industry, but Regino Joel Tuaño has managed to corner the Bingo market from his Manila-based organization, as well. Should we mention he’s an avid badminton player and karaoke singer, who likes to croon American soft rock tunes, too ... Not bad for the second youngest of five children – well regarded for his generosity, deep faith, love of family and business integrity – who was left fatherless at a tender young age. Today, the Video King 48-year-old Filipino native serves as board member, president and chief operating officer for BK Systems Philippines, Inc.®, incorporated in 1999 and popularly known as Bingo King. A distributor of BK Entertainment products not only in the Philippines, but Southeast Asia, Bingo King currently supplies more than 90 percent of the operating Bingo halls, including the Charity Bingo operations of all the Casino Filipino branches of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., commonly known as PAGCOR. “We basically dominate the Bingo market in the Philippines, big time!,” he is fond of saying in his ebullient way. The premier choice, Bingo King distributes a wide array of Bingo products, ranging from Bingo paper, pull-tabs, ink markers, as well as Video King’s extensive line of electronic handsets, tablets, consoles, flashboards, PowerTouch™ systems, HorsePower Racing™ and other specialty games. Hired initially as an operations manager in 2000, Tuaño’s career has seemed to fast track as quickly as the company’s phenomenal growth. “When we first started out, we had 30 percent of .the market share or 30 or 40 halls. Ed Dwornicki/Video King Whether stationed in the tropics of the Philippines (above) or the frigid cold, Regino Joel Tuaño (left) has remained constant – as the consummate business man, excelling in the gaming industry, cornering the Bingo market in Southeast Asia. President, Board Member and CEO of BK Systems Philippines Inc., the Filipino native and company members (below) pioneered and legitimized the country’s Bingo industry. BK Systems Philippines Inc. “Today we have 140 Bingo halls across the entire country,” said Tuaño, keenly focused on the future, anticipating even further growth. Viewed as a pioneer in the Filipino Bingo industry, BK was the first company to establish a formalized, legitimized and professional Bingo supply business, which now employs about 36 key people, not including its contractors and promoters, who are all highly knowledgeable in the Bingo field, he said. “A full-service, company, they do it all, sell it all, service it all, and show Bingo operators how to make more money,” said Ed Dwornicki, Director of Sales for Video King, who has made several trips to the Philippines and counts Tuaño as a trusty business associate and a close, personal friend. Headed by founder, CEO and Board Chairman Domingo Guevara, BKS Philippines is among a vast conglomerate of the Guevent Group of Companies, spanning from technology to travel, medical and the entertainment fields, including introduction of the Volkswagen bug back in the ’60s – endeavors all pioneered by his family’s highly successful line of entrepreneurs. Prior to Bingo King, Tuaño admits he had little knowledge of the game, despite its universal appeal. Maybe, because from an early age, his mind has been more focused on making his mark on the world. “Like everybody, I wanted to be a fireman or pilot,” he said of his ambitions as a young kid. Tuaño/See Page 9 FALL ’09 Tuaño –––––––––––– Continued From Page 8 But as the family’s only boy, he was driven to establish his independence early on. “I was orphaned at an early age. My father died when I was 9. I had no father figure. I knew if I messed up, I would give my mother more trouble,” he said. Although his mother could afford to send him to De La Salle, one of the most exclusive schools in the Philippines for his primary education, he would not accept an allowance and began working at age 15. “My uncle owned a meat factory. He sold hot dogs, bacon, sausage and corned beef. I would ride a van and go to different market places as a delivery helper. It toughened me up. Physically, too. I had to manually carry the hot dogs,” he said. And, shopping in the Philippines, a tropical country composed of more than 7,000 islands, some rather primitive, can be a bit different than in the United States. “I would deliver to the ‘Wet Market,’ which sold everything from needles to rice, fish and fresh meat. It’s more like a flea market or bazaar. Not a grocery store or shop. People go there in slippers and shorts and come out really stinking of rotten vegetables or fish. There’s no air conditioning, no refrigerators, only a roof,” he said. But the lack of modern luxuries doesn’t seem to keep the crowds – in the world’s 12th most populous country – at bay. “It’s very popular. Everybody goes there. It’s open every day. It’s like the center of everything. You can see the poorest of the poor and the richest people together. That’s where you go to shop," he said of his countrymen, who have adapted to the high temps and often-extreme humidity. During college, Tuaño continued working for his uncle, but transferred to VICTAS, a pharmaceutical company the elder also owned. “He was like a godfather to me. He taught me everything. I was his administrative assistant. Like his eyes and ears. I owe everything to him,” he said, regretting they have since lost touch. Keeping a dogged schedule, Tuaño worked Video King from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., then attended school from 5 to 9 p.m. in order to support himself. “I could only afford to send myself to Santo Tomas, Asia’s oldest university, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. But I sent myself to De La Salle for my master’s,” he said. After VICTAS, Tuaño transferred to United Laboratories, where he worked as an account executive, ultimately meeting Maria Elena, the woman he would one day marry. “I’ve been married to one woman,” he said. “She’s quiet, a good mother. She supports me in everything that I do. She studies the pharmacological effects of drugs on the body. She works in a lab and is very patient. That’s why we lasted 24 years. She’s very patient,” he jokingly added. Charity-oriented and active in their church, the Tuaños have two children: A son, Jo Emmanuel, now 23, who will earn his master’s degree in culinary arts from Australia by specializing in European cuisine; and Maria Rosario, 20, studying multimedia to pursue a career in directing. “Every (girl) is named Maria in the Philippines in reverence to the Blessed Mother. It’s a deeply rooted Catholic society. Her dream is to work in the L.A. film industry,” he said. Because of his high-profile business connections, Tuaño was recruited by the Berjaya Group, one of the biggest lottery operators in Southeast Asia to establish a lottery in the Philippines. VKN – VIDEO KING NETWORK “Sales is my strength. They needed a guy to roll out terminals in as many locations as possible,” he said as to why he was selected. After a few years, Tuaño was then recruited by his friend, Jim Holmes, whose company received a contract to establish a lottery system in a former Soviet republic. “I thought if I could survive the Ukraine, I can survive anywhere,” he said. Despite the great pay, homesickness and the frigid temperatures weighed heavily on Tuaño, who spent 11 months there. “I really missed the kids. I missed my family so much,” he said. While in the Ukraine, he was offered a job as vice president of Allied Entertainment, a Filipino-based film company. “It was a fun job,” he said of his stint there, made rather interesting by the creative nature of the business. “But not really my line of work. But, I was surrounded by beautiful women. They inspire you,” he stating the more obvious highlights that came with the position. Video King Employees of BK Systems Philippines and their families often relax together at various fishing villages, feasting on freshly caught Tilapia, a tasty white fish. Once again, Holmes entered the picture. Now working for the Bingo King group, then headquartered in North America, Holmes reached out to Tuaño. When the BK filed for Chapter 11, the Guevent Group – together with Cynthia Picazo and Tuaño himself – took stock in the company and ultimately bought out the remaining shares. “The company had wanted a better presence in the Philippines. Jim Holmes is a good friend, and I wanted to help him. Whatever he wanted, I just joined. I didn’t really know Bingo, I never really played,” he said. And, once again, Tuaño’s innate drive to succeed also kicked in. “I feel excitement with start-up companies,” he said of his decision to embark on this new venture. At the time, Bingo was more of a home game, often played at wakes and fiestas, held in reverence to certain saints. Almost every town in the Philippines has a patron saint, he said. “It was basically before the introduction of electronics. It was played on cardboard cards, and they used shells, stones or coins to mark the numbers,” he explained. Today, Bingo in the Philippines is big business. “It has grown in popularity. It’s everywhere. Even the country’s two largest TV networks and convenience stores have their own style of Bingo, used more as a way to promote their product, such as shampoo,” he said. Although mostly paper players, Tuaño adds more and more Filipinos are tuning into Video King’s electronics tablets and handsets. “The Bingo business is starting to mature. We are heavily into QuickShot Bingo (Champion II) tablets. Tuaño/See Page 11 9 Card ––––– Continued From Page 8 credit card services will offer: ! Video King Video King has three Bingo racing themes now running: HorsePower Racing™, harnessing some hoof-pounding, fast mounting action; Go-Go Ball Racing™, with an odd-ball cast of characters ranging from the gallant Sir Dab-A-Lot to Free Space, our rocket-fueled astronaut; and Long Shot™, leaving players howling over this mad-dash, greyhound theme, including the J Lope dog, who likes to preen at every shot, or portly Sugar Shack, who likes to eat more often than not … Racing –––––––––––– Continued From Page 3 “Elements include the assignment of combinations of numbers that are displayed on a traditional Bingo or Keno flashboard to create participants; an animated display of events that is driven by randomly drawn numbers; and the game winner being determined by which Bingo player is holding either a Bingo card or a pull-tab that ultimately has the same combination of numbers as are randomly drawn and used to determine the outcome of the animated contest or race the players are watching,” he said. Morin True to racing form, Video King's concept also utilizes a simulated racing announcer, who helps liven the pace by “broadcasting” the event in English, Spanish or French – covering many of the languages spoken in the halls using Video King's products found worldwide. “A three-year process, the patent is actually based on a game that has been around for years,” Free said.“It was popular in a number of markets. People would place inside bets with all the balls called. Some would bet a buck the fourth downline would be covered first, while others the seventh. Whenever all five numbers were called, they won. It was like a little side bet,” he said. “Video King's concept brings an entertaining new element to the games through the racing animation that is generated and watched by the players as a result of each number being called,” Morin added. Taking the reigns, so to speak, Free was instrumental in designing the patent’s five-step animation process, based on the sequence of called balls. In Bingo racing each “competitor” is associated with one of the columns on a standard flashboard. If you picture a flashboard, you’ll see 15 columns or “competitors.” Competitor 1 is associated with balls, 1, 16, 31, 46 and 61, all the numbers found in the first column. Whenever one of these balls is called, Competitor 1, be it a horse or other event icon, moves forward one position. Once all five of these numbers in the first column are called, Competitor 1 crosses the finish line. Competitor 10 is associated with ball calls 10, 25, 40, 55 and 70, all the numbers found in the 10th column. Once all these numbers are called, Competitor 10 crosses the finish line and so forth. Besides the integration of the animation concept that the Video King patent brings, Morin expanded the game concept even further – by designing Bingo cards, which utilize combinations of numbers and patterns to create winning combinations similar to real-life racing wagers, along with the possibility for players to win huge progressive jackpots, he said. In addition to a single winner, Bingo racing jackpots prizes include: ! Exactas: The first two finishers in exact order. ! Quinellas: The first two finishers in any order. ! Tri-fectas: The first three finishers in exact order. ! Super-fecta: The first four finishers in exact order. And, whenever the game-ending pattern is not achieved, the players simply continue daubing until a card is full (a black-out), and a consolation prize can be paid. In addition, “Video King has a few new twists that we also intend to introduce that will make the game jackpots even more exciting,” Free said. Software used to generate the game's animated features integrates seamlessly with Video King's primary Bingo hall equipment (Bingo ball consoles and flashboards), along with Racing/See Page 11 VKN – VIDEO KING NETWORK FALL ’09 Casino Journal Charles Anderer (left) Group Publisher of the BNP Media Gaming Group congratulates Dan Free, CTO and Vice President Of Electronics at Video King during the annual Gaming Summit in Las Vegas, where he accepted one of the 2008 Top 20 Most Innovative Gaming Technology Products Awards for the Pick ’N Play Bingo & Slots device. It’s not in any way going to affect paper players. For the high rollers, the tablet is able to attract them,” he said. Pleased with the tablet’s reception, he said, “I believe it’s a milestone for us. It has helped us increase revenue. That’s why our company would like to concentrate in this direction.” Regulated by the government, most the halls are located in shopping centers, averaging 1,500 square feet, although some are a lot bigger, he said. “We promote the game as some sort of entertainment. It’s the cheapest form of entertainment. It’s cheaper than a movie. And more fun,” he said of Bingo’s vast appeal. And, Dwornicki, a seasoned traveler, can attest to that fact. “In the Philippines Bingo is more fun. It’s not restricted by the unwritten rules of North America,” he said. You don’t have to keep quiet or worry about blocking someone’s view. “Most the Bingo halls are lively. Easily accessible. The doors are wide open. They’re colorful, not drab; vibrant, not dark and dingy, but bright and cheerful,” he said. The same can be said of the workers. “The floor walkers blow a whistle and rock ‘n’ roll jams when you have a winner – until it’s verified. It’s more of a party,” he said. And, perhaps the same can be said of Tuaño himself. Fun-loving, his work means more to him than just business. “Joel is a relationship-type guy,” said Clem Chantiam, President of Trade Products®, who supplies BK with consumables, such as Bingo paper, ink markers and pull-tabs and has known Tuaño for 10 years. “Not only have we developed a good business relationship, but a good friendship. Joel’s like family to our group,” he said. “On the business side, he has a lot of drive, high energy, shows enthusiasm, is very goal- and sales-oriented. As a friend, he has a really good personality, sings in the church and in the choir, is very religious,” he’s noted over the years. Dwornicki, who Tuaño also regards as a “brother,” echoes his words. “He’s the kind of international partner you’ve got to have. He’s a handshake guy. Trustworthy. He’s a man of his words.” A benevolent boss, backed by a loyal staff, he makes a point of treating people well – with company trips, community sponsorships, donations and other acts of kindness, Dwornicki said. Tim Stuart, Video King’s President/CEO who has also known Tuaño for more than a decade, agreed. “Joel has made a phenomenal impact on the Bingo industry in the Philippines. A great idea man, his enthusiasm is only magnified by his business savvy and notable charm. We enjoy a very strong business and professional relationship,” he said. Part of his success, Tuaño credits to being Filipino. Initially colonized by the Spanish, thus the Hispanic names, the Filipinos are known globally as a hospitable and hard-working people, he said. As the third-largest English-speaking nation, they embrace the Americans who liberated them from the Japanese, even adopting the American culture from the fast-food restaurants right down the places some call home. “Americans won’t get lost in the Philippines. Everybody speaks English, and many streets are named after U.S. presidents,” he said. But, another could be his attitude toward doing business. “We don’t measure work by hours, but by output. As long as you are hitting your target,” he said. “Over the last 10 years we have always hit our target. If you stay in the office all the time, you are unproductive.” So if you want to get a hold of him Saturday morning, don’t even try. He’ll be engaged in a vigorous game of badminton, followed by a hearty meal with friends – or perhaps enjoying the good life in a village hut, feasting on his daily regimen of rice and freshly caught Tilapia, a tasty white fish. Capable of playing hundreds of cards per game, both 75and 90-number Bingo, its 7-inch, 800 x 480 color LCD display is also protected by a resistive touch-screen overlay. The same sturdy design – with a convenient carrying handle and stacking points – it can “run” with the Big Dogs, packing enough battery power to generate up to 12 hours of play – from a single four-hour charge. Connected to a WiFi network for device management and game play, the TAB-e also does the “thinking” for you – daubing cards (optional) and verifying Bingos. All you have to do is touch the visuals on the screen – and of course – pick which games you wish to play. Here’s another tasty morsel ... With the TAB-e you can play Bingo – at the same time as a multitude of the most popular, credit-based and specialty games on the market today! Quarters ––– Continued From Page 6 The progressive jackpots are won by the oh-so fortunate lady or gent, who achieves a game-winning pattern on the last ball call on a number, marked with the Crazy Quarter or Golden Eagle symbol. Additional chances to win these progressives come from incremental player purchases of these symbols, whereby the participants now have additional opportunities on more cards to win the progressive jackpots. What this means in plain English, fellow players, the greater the participation, the more chances to win, the bigger piece of the proverbial pie. But wait there’s more ... After players complete their initial card and symbol purchases, with a few touches of the screen, they can also swap the cards they originally received for different ones. Swapping is an attempt to get the placement of the progressive symbols into better or “luckier” positions, based on the game pattern being played for that particular game and where their progressive symbols were initially positioned. With its rapid-fire ball calls, we declare Crazy Quarters will shake up the status quo. Players will be more keyed up than teetotalers at that famed tea party – pressing custominstalled buttons on the tables or touching on-screen icons to “daub” their cards after every call.
