MESSAGE FROM BY THE AMBASSADOR
OF FRANCE IN SOUTH AFRICA
WELCOME TO THIS TECHNICAL SYMPOSIUM ON
INNOVATION AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE PAPER
INDUSTRY!
I want to thank Business France and SYMOP for this great initiative
of organizing the 2 symposiums, in Durban on Tuesday, 7th of
June and in Johannesburg on Thursday 9th of June, engaging
the South African and French key players in the paper industry,
to reflect on the challenges, share expertise and solutions of this
sector.
Our two countries are key players for the international market
paper. The French paper industry enjoys an excellent reputation
internationally and particularly in machinery for making paper
and cardboard. French companies are gaining market share
through highly targeted products for integrated construction
process.
In a context of strong international competition, the French
manufacturers have not gained this leading position on the
market by chance : innovation, skills, machine quality, an
excellent customer service provided throughout the entire sales
process, a worldwide presence grant them the notoriety and
professionalism required to resolve market problems and meet
market requirements.
Technology innovation is a key element for success in the
globalization. I invite all participants to make the most of these
days to establish fruitful exchanges. This is a great opportunity,
which I hope will be the starting point for a closer relationship
between France and South Africa companies, that these
exchanges will bring all stakeholders solutions to dealing
with global challenges such as energy, escalating costs, low
productivity and water scarcity facing the global family.
We hope that this event will be fruitful for all of participants.
I thank all partners: the Department of Trade & Industry (the
DTI), the French Association for manufacturing (SYMOP), The
Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA),
Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry of Southern
Africa (TAPPSA), the French Trade Commission-Business France
in South Africa.

The Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper
Industry of Southern Africa (TAPPSA) is an internationally
respected association that covers the entire process
chain, from forestry to the conversion of wood into viable
products. The association seeks to further the application
of the sciences in the pulp, paper and allied industries
and provides a means for the interchange of ideas on
scientific and technical matters affecting the industry.
It also promotes education in the science and technology
of pulp and paper manufacture, stimulates investigation
and research into the manufacture and use of pulp and
paper. In addition, it arranges for the collection and
dissemination of information relating to the industry in
southern Africa and elsewhere, and for the presentation,
discussion and publication of papers and other
contributions submitted to the association.
TAPPSA actively promotes cooperation with kindred
associations around the world in an effort to facilitate
professional and social interaction among members and
industry professionals. The association hosts a biennial
international conference and exhibition and endeavours
to host smaller seminars and workshops.
TAPPSA produces a bimonthly technical magazine –
TAPPSA Journal – for a carefully targeted circulation list
comprising process engineers, mill managers, forestry
managers and other decision-makers involved in the
paper and related industries in sub-Saharan Africa. The
publication is also sent, by request, to a number of
decision-makers based in Scandinavia, the Americas,
Australasia and Europe.

Pagora, the International school of paper, print media and biomaterials,
is a specialized engineering school of Grenoble INP, the Institute of
Technology of Grenoble University.
Grenoble Institute of Technology comprises 5000 undergraduates,
Master’s and Ph.D’s (the highest number of engineering students in
France), 22 Master & Doctoral degrees in engineering sciences, 29 major
laboratories (6 labs. out of France), several research platforms (Minatec,
Minalogic, Tenerrdis, Carnot Institutes and Labex, …). All these laboratories
takes benefits of the high-tech environment in Grenoble (public and
private). Linking major Institutes of Technology, it is viewed as one of the
driving forces behind research in Europe.
Pagora accompanies the mutation of the fibers, paper, graphic
communication, packaging and biomaterials industries. It has become
one of the few international curriculums for high level engineers in these
areas. It offers a specialized cursus from vegetal biomass to printed,
converted and functionalized polymers, materials & products:
• Pulp, paper, cardboard, converting
• Bioproducts, biomaterials, bioenergy
• Graphic media, surface functionalization, printed electronics
Pagora is a unique place in France to offer specialized training programs
in these topics. It is strongly connected and supported by the French pulp,
paper, cardboard & printing industry. Today, Engineers from Pagora work
mostly in Europe and in Canada.
Pagora welcomes international students who can follow two specialized
programs:
• the Master’s degree in Pulp and Paper Engineering
• the Post-Master’s degree in Biorefinery & bioproducts.
Both of them include two semesters, one academic and one in a partner
company or in Pagora’s laboratories. The academic period includes
courses, lab. training, conferences and site visits. The Post-master’s degree
covers the entire chain from biorefinery to the production of bioenergy,
bioproducts and biomaterials. Lectures are given by Professors and
industrial experts. The expertise offered by these programs is of particular
interest in the packaging, chemical, papermaking and energy industrial
sectors.
Pagora also offers professional training programs in the area of pulp,
paper, board, printing and converting that can be fitted to the demand of
industrials and mills.
Pagora is supported by the LGP2, a specialized laboratory of Grenoble
INP, an associated unit of the French Scientific Research Centre (CNRS)
and a partner of two Carnot Institutes and one LABEX.
LGP2 comprises about 40 PhD students and post-docs and 25 permanent
Professors.
Pagora is located on the Eastern campus of Grenoble.
We invite you to visit our web site (http://pagora.grenoble-inp.fr),
